Monthly Beatmapping Contests: June 2021

by pishifat, Nokashi

Aiming to become osu!'s next Elite Mapper? Whip out your creative muscles in this month's square-pattern themed mapping contest!

June's Monthly Beatmapping Contest (MBC) includes opportunities for osu! and osu!catch mappers. Next month we'll likely opt out osu!catch for osu!taiko and osu!mania, so stick around for that!

Schedule

  • Beatmapping (2.5 weeks): Contests are announced near the start of the month and beatmappers create their entries.
  • Screening (1.5 weeks): Competitive entries are selected by experienced beatmappers for each mode.
  • Judging (1.5 weeks): Competitive entries are judged by different experienced beatmappers for each mode.
  • Rewards (announced mid-July): Winners are announced and prizes are redeemed, including fancy profile badges and the legendary Elite Mapper title!

Smaller game modes don't run contests as frequently, so they've also chosen to extend their judging time by a month. That said, May's osu!taiko and osu!mania contest results will likely be announced in mid-July as well!

Beatmapping

Theme

A limitation is a mapping restriction that every submission needs to follow, like "star rating cannot exceed 4.00" or "circles only". These keep the MBC fresh by ensuring each month isn't the same old contest.

Limitations are how we usually handle this, but both contests this month are switching things up with much looser themes instead.

There's no objectively correct way to handle themes, so we're hoping to see what cool ideas you can come up with!

osu! MBC theme: square patterns

Yep, that's it.

Your map should be focused on square patterns. A clear focus on squares and engaging execution of different square-like patterns will play a significant role in the judging phase of the contest!

osu!catch MBC theme: 1/1 rhythm gaps

A "1/1 rhythm gap" is considered any rhythm where 2 objects are separated by 1 beat in the timeline with nothing in between.

Whether it's a walk, a hyperdash, or anything in between, any type of 1/1 transition works for this theme! Just like square patterns in osu!'s contest, engaging execution and patterns using this rhythmic theme will have notable weight in the judging phase of this osu!catch contest.

Songs

Each MBC provides beatmappers a choice between songs from one of osu!'s Featured Artists.

This month's artist is rhythm game extraordinaire Tanchiky. Pick any of these songs for your submission in the osu! or osu!catch contests.

Tanchiky - REDOUT feat. Torika (177 BPM)

Rules

Breaking any of these rules will land you in MBC prison. Submissions must...

  • follow the month's beatmapping theme for the contest's mode:
    • osu!: square patterns
    • osu!catch: 1/1 rhythm gaps
  • be in .osz format. Including a background image and custom hitsounds is fine, but skin/storyboard/video content will not be considered.
  • be a single difficulty for one of the month's selected songs.
  • not be uploaded to the osu! website through the Beatmap Submission System (BSS). All contest submissions are anonymous during the screening/judging phases to avoid bias. DO NOT SHARE YOUR ENTRY!
  • be solely created by you. Collaborations are not allowed.
  • abide by the ranking criteria. While we can be forgiving for mistakes, submissions that could not be ranked without major changes will be disqualified.

Submission

A little less than 3 weeks remain. As per tradition, we expect everyone to start and finish their maps 2 days before the deadline. When that time comes around, here's where you'll need to go to submit your map:

May's contest results for osu! will be out in a couple weeks. For osu!taiko and osu!mania, expect to wait an extra month!

See you soon!

The square pattern is only the them for standard, you don't need to follow it in catch too. The catch's theme is 1/1 rythm gaps.

be there or be square

I'm a bit disappointed by the delay announcement for taiko and mania - coming from mania olympiad as my first mapping contest (which took several months to be judged), I felt like one of the main selling points of these monthly contests was the predictable, set schedule, which made me excited for the first mania iteration.

I understand that everybody involved is just a human who does this in their spare time, which makes it inherently 'wrong' to ask for anything, but two things irritate me here:

  1. There's already a screening crew in place to reduce workload on the judges, plus the smaller modes should receive less submissions in general.
  2. If the judging period is extended over more than one month, there's no possibility for any small mode mapping contest to become a monthly thing.

If the main problem is lack of people who are willing to judge/screen the small modes on a regular basis, why not make some kind of public announcement inviting interested mappers to help with judging? Given the chance, I'd definitely try it - right now, mapping contest judges are in this black box that I have no idea how I'd become part of.

one of the mbc taiko judges here

not only is that taiko mapping community is relatively much bigger than the playerbase, which already makes both screening and judging more work (screeners are humans too, they did the hardlifiting for us so we dont need to go through like 10 bad submissions that automatically gets a 0 by ourselves), modes like taiko and mania are already inherently limited in mapping because of how the game mode functions, you dont have aesthetic qualities of standard and ctb as a factor and that clamps down the limitation ideas we can have for the contest, which will inevitably cripple our progress in the coming future

also using public announcement to get in more judges/screeners is just a recipe for disaster, we already see what happened with taiko mbc last month with screeners having to screen out so many picks because of limited picks and inevitably getting off the amazing picks that miss their chances of getting judged (which is also a problem of the system itself but i wont get into that), and thats with experienced mappers/modders as screeners, i dont think any people working in the mbc wants to go through even more work screening out new judge/screeners' applications and having the very small, but still there risk of getting in subpar judges and screeners

in short, quality > quantity, we want to ensure to not only provide a fun contest for the mappers, but also ensure the screeners and judges are held above standards when it comes to contest like these, if we cant even provide quality but still insist to push out the contest, then whats the point?

Thank you for the insight + detailed response, going to answer both comments here - yeah, having submitted to two contests I am new, speaking from the mapper side I just wanted to share my opinion/offer something for discussion. I'll admit there was a touch of personal frustration in my comment yesterday that some other people probably felt too.

I get the argument about quality and a public call for judges being extra work/a coinflip, but I think there might be some more 'safe' picks than currently on the radar who could be introduced to the program without much research (or a public call), could also be a good thing looking at contests like the beatmapping world championship (where small modes might run into a similar problem), and osu! playerbase growing in general. I don't know what the submission numbers look like over time, but I'd imagine having extra judges at some point could come in handy.

Yup, I guess at some point you'd have to use themes like this month's instead of limitations for both taiko and mania, which makes the contest a bit less creative, although it's a problem that will appear sooner or later regardless.

If I had to choose between higher quality contests or more contests, I'd wholeheartedly go with the former if it doesn't mean there's only one contest every six months or so. I just wish there'd be some more room for the format to grow, as I like the simplicity, the showcased featured artist music and how approachable it is for everyone.

i'd rather mapping taiko with those songs, while May contest song selects are silly.

hi, I don't understand the CTB condition, all notes have to be at least 1/1?

Nokashi said in the modding hub server:
"This month's theme is 1/1 rhythm gap usage. Ofcourse, not everything should be a 1/1 gap, but the mapper should attempt to blend this thematic idea with their own style and create something thats fitting to be part of this mbc's theme"

oh~~ I see, thanks a lot :3

"A mapper who's famous for his square jump pp maps, Fatfan Kolek has proven their square-mapping capacity with their entry of Tanchiky - ##########. With their experience on mapping with square jumps, it should be understandable that they use various square-related patterns excellently, while still being playable and representative overall.

Do 1/1 sliders also count in the CTB theme?
