Votes are tallied and locked in. Discover who won this contest celebrating one of osu!'s most memorable beatmaps!

In case you're new around here, Kuba Oms - My Love is that "memorable beatmap". Participants of the A Labour of Love contest created a full beatmap experience around My Love, including each of these elements:

  • Remix of Kuba Oms - My Love
  • Beatmap spread of the remix
  • Storyboard or custom video

After 5 months of hard work from creators and judges along with votes from thousands of osu! players, we're stoked to recap the outcome of osu!'s most ambitious contest yet!

Live stream showcase

If text isn't your style, we live streamed a reveal of the contest results on our Twitch channel the other day. Below, you can watch the top 8 entries alongside live chat reactions, quick interviews with the winners, and commentary from pishifat, Ephemeral and Uberzolik:

Read on for a summary of the results!

Community vote results

Remember when we asked you to vote for your favourite 2 contest entries here? Well, we received a MASSIVE 7224 total votes spread across the 8 submissions!

Proving to the world that you don't need a crazy 7 star map to win the love of osu! players, Team Red but Blue's entry Kuba Oms - My Love (Redside Remix) dominated the community vote with a 300 point lead!

Team Red but Blue results

This mapset has everything you could possibly ask for: a 3-difficulty spread by Noffy / Chompy / Zer0-G calling back to the original My Love mapset, an iconic key visual designed by osu! fanart contest legend Tofumang, a stunning video fashioned by Noffy, and a universally appealing remix produced by Redside (with an extra vocaloid touch by Noffy once again)!

Each team member has been rewarded the community pick profile badge for their well-deserved win.

Judge results

Alongside the community vote, we asked a curated group of 18 experienced mappers and musicians to give their input on the entries as well! See the panelists from A Labour of Love's wiki page.

Following a format similar to Monthly Beatmapping Contest screening, each of the judges selected their ordered top 5 entries focusing on their area of expertise (mapping or music production). Each position in a judge's top 5 was assigned a number (first place = 5 points, second place = 4 points, etc.), and the sum of these selections made up the mapping and musician panel results.

The overall panel followed the same format with contribution from all judges. Their top 5 picks were based on an evaluation of the full beatmap package (song remix, beatmap, visuals, and general cohesiveness of the elements). To balance out the 6 musician-focused panelists with the 12 mapping-focused panelists, musicians were given more weight in the overall category.

A full overview of judge results can be found here and on the A Labour of Love wiki page

Overall runner-up

Team schoolboy fans takes the contest's theme of celebrating a classic beatmap to its limit with their submission Kuba Oms - My Love (Shadren Remix)!

Overall runner-up badge

Nostalgia is the name of the game with this entry. Sporting a retro synthwave remix by Shadren, a simply classic beatmap spread of Easy through Insane by Shmiklak / Shadren / Daycore / wajinshu, and an absolute masterpiece of a storyboard by Shmiklak, this submission brings you back to your cherished osu! memories from years past.

While it may not have scored especially high from either the mapper or musician panels alone, factoring in the storyboard is what pushed this entry above the crowd. For creating their overall solid submission, everyone on team schoolboy fans received the overall runner-up profile badge!

Overall runner-up badge

Seeing as the Elite Storyboarder title wasn't awarded to anyone in the overall winning team, we've passed down the title to Shmiklak for their outstanding creativity in this contest (along with their vast experience with storyboarding elsewhere of course!).

Overall winner

Taking the breath away from mappers and musicians across the board, team extremely valid wears the heart-shaped crown with their submission Raphlesia & BilliumMoto - My Love!

Overall runner-up badge

Yep, that's right. This entry received #1 in the musician-focused panel, the mapping panel, and the overall panel. With just a few more votes they could've even taken the community vote — insane, right?

This remix by Shinwoir (a.k.a. Raphlesia) and BilliumMoto is practically perfect for a rhythm game setting, and who would've expected less from a combo involving the last osu! remix contest winner? Mao / DeviousPanda / Realazy took full advantage of this perfect track too, crafting a 6-difficulty spread that appeals to players on every level with stellar performances from everyone involved. While this entry's storyboard was a bit lackluster compared to the other entries, this one clearly focused on the other aspects and managed to make it work anyway.

Given their landslide of a win on the judging side of things, it's more than fitting to reward everyone on team extremely valid with the overall winner profile badge!

Overall winner badge

On top of this, each member of the team has earned a forum title to honour their win:

Given BilliumMoto and Mao already earned these user titles from different contests, they've been granted the II suffix. Double congrats to them!

Conclusion

Congratulations again to all the winners and thanks to everyone who participated in A Labour of Love!

We hope this contest has been as fun for you as it has been for us. Community members joining together to produce something cool has been the spirit of osu! since the very beginning, and it's awesome to see that feeling shine through in every submission (...except maybe this one, sorry team Down).

This may be the end for A Labour of Love, but there's no doubt that another contest focused on the full beatmap experience will fill its shoes one day. It's rare for a contest to connect with so many different people throughout the osu! world like this one has, and we look forward to fully embracing that again at some point in the future.

See you next time.

It's a SHAME that 2 of 3 beatmaps hadn't the storyboard set up and won the major awards. Why there wasn't a panel for the storyboard rating? Definitely major prizes should go to the incoherent sound, Dolbit Normalno and schoolboy fans teams, not for the team where the reason for winning is only the Hatsune Miku.

Shadren remix will always be the #1 in my heart

epic

Cool.

ah yes the reason team red but blue won the community vote is definitely only because they incorporated anime into their map. let's continue to discredit the incredible remix by redside

yep

Ah yes,
"This is a team-based contest. Users with different skillsets must collaborate to create a full beatmap experience, including:

Remix of the song Kuba Oms - My Love (download stems here)
Beatmap spread following the ranking criteria (osu! only)
Storyboard or custom video"

And then overall winner is the map without any storyboard or video at ALL, ok sure.
Schoolboy fans still deserve this top2 more.

they say "team down" as if it wasn't just down

Congrats to all the winners : D

Tried our best as a basically "the team that no one heard off" got #6 in community votes and #4 in overall, thanks guys who voted <3

Yes, a entry without storyboard got the #1 Overall Panel, this is I-N-S-A-N-E
Next time, please highlight: We won't consider the storyboard

I love how down gets a mention

thanks for organising the contest pishi!

its honestly one of the most surreal experiences being able to map in a contest where the song itself was a thing the teams had to make, and i hope that there will be more contests similar to this one as it was amazing to be a part of

(hopefully with one extra team slot so we can get a dedicated storyboarder LOL)

Congratulations for the winners! I had a good time watching the Live Stream Showcase :D

I'm so glad I didn't participate. Big waste of time for storyboarders when #1 is a video and #2 doesn't even have a storyboard. There wasn't even a panel to judge them.

Coppertine Damnae

schoolboy fans did have a storyboard, I think you're talking about extremely valid in that case. But still, why did they classify a video a storyboard.. a video is just 1 storyboard element..

kisata Coppertine

i mean when you put it that way is a storyboard not just a video anyways lol? almost none of them nowadays actually interact with the map in a playable way or even tell a "story"

Anyways, it's irrelevant anyways because custom videos were explicitly allowed by the rules.

Noffy Coppertine
  1. Video or storyboard was explicitly allowed from the get go
  2. The video is made of numerous elements, design, and timing the same as a storyboard would be. The difference is I could use other video clips as elements instead of just still images. Just because it's rendered and becomes a single final file doesn't mean it popped out of nowhere
  3. The attitudes I've gotten from storyboarders this past month about it being totally invalid for being a video or less effort because it's a video or bad because it's a video have been extremely disheartening, I don't want to interact with the sb community anymore after going through this. We're doing the same thing of creating custom and moving visual experiences just using different means...

exactly what i thought

Uberzolik Damnae

yeah, i'm not sure what happened to the storyboard panel (it was mentioned in the original newspost afaik)

i think you're looking at the wrong part of the results though; overall is the category that factored in all elements including storyboard. noffy's entry was #6 on that category, and #2 was a storyboard indeed (a very strong one as well).

i definitely do agree that it's very dissapointing the winning entry had such a weak storyboard, though. hopefully they add one in before the bundling, at least.

edit: i would like to say though that attacking the usage of a video is in fairly poor taste; it's still a lot of work put into the visual aspect of the contest...

Damnae Uberzolik

"overall is the category that factored in all elements including storyboard"
clearly not, with this #1 overall
