The Master and Margarita (sadly dropped)

this is going to be a weird one, TLDR, I sadly could not get through this book, although, I don't think the book is bad by any means, and it's definitively not going to stop me from talking at length from a related tho largely not directly relevant to the books topic.

The Master and Margarita is a masterpiece of global literature, a part of the literary canon, one of the best and most important novels from the USSR and in general that entire century, it's been discussed at length by many scholars, but sadly, myself, a 19yo, it student in a medium size city in spain, wasn't really vibing with it

whenever I made this thread I made it under a certain thought and philosophy, even tho I actually didn't directly think all of this back then. I just like to talk about stuff, not only that, but I do think of myself as someone who, compared with the rest in OT is well cultured, therefore making my thoughts and general analysis of certain works remotely interesting. In addition, it gets me to break new ground, get out of my comfort zone and try new things.

most media I interact with, and most media that was requested on this thread, are very friendly to that type of conversation, however, classic books are a different beast, not because they're long or wordy or complex, but because they feel solved, as I said earlier, this is a book that has discussed at length by people way smarter than me. The edition that I got from the book even starts with a fairly long prologue that is just an essay of the editor about the book themes and message, that completely changes the way I engage with it, not just because the essay puts a certain expectation and ideals onto my mind, just that concept of that essay existing, and it having a wikipedia page as long as it is, that changes the dynamic

The way I feel is that I can't just read the book, enjoy it my way, and just interpret it here (which there probably will be a lot of very bad interpretations that just have not been corrected by other people, be that indifference, people not reading the review, or people thinking I was onto something, I do not know, probably a mix of all of them). But instead, it feels like i'm just trying to get and understand and follow that official explanation. That opinion feels like a authority, it feels like an exam

I don't read that many books, I enjoy them, but it's not my primary fix, and I feel that these people writing the wikipedia and the essay and the reviews are completely right. If I come to a different opinion, that's a failure on me as a reader, on my reading comprehension, at the end of the day, they got the historical context, they got a better view and general understanding on the medium, hell, they even studied that at university

I can't possibly come up with anything that they haven't alraedy said, and if I were to do so, I would probably feel like i'm reading it wrong. This thread has kinda conditioned to actually just look at everything with a critical eye, and just doing that in this book is stressful, that doesn't really happen in any other medium. The whole concept of the literary cannon and universal literature, the culture surrounding it, just doesn't exist in movies for example. Even if there are people who have studied movies as much as people do literature, and even if there are movies that have been discussed to earth and back, it stills feels legal to give your opinion, the sentiment is different

so what's my actual opinion on the book?, well, i've not got much of one, I actually just started reading this book during dead time in class, like I normally do with most literature. But be it the pressure of the final exames or whatever, I didn't get completely hooked into it, and I grew a bit distracted reading it, at some point my brain just stopped registering the words, and while I tried to get back in the groove, reading this book felt like a slog and I just wasn't enjoying it. I got to chapter 20 before dropping it. I bet that if I were to give the book a second chance, starting again from page 1, and force myself to not try to read it like I would a typical book I could probably enjoy it, I just don't reall want to do that.

it's just, i've learnt I don't like reading books like this, again, they just feel stressful man. Don't take it against universal literature tho, I think that's just a personal problem of me having the wrong mental, i've not met or read anything online that shares a sentiment like the one I have on this topic, so it's probably just a me thing.

Honestly this may just be a manifestation of my academical stress in book form LMAO

Could you do Persona 4? I'm a little over halfway through the game according to howlongtobeat and I'd be pretty interested in seeing what you think of it compared to p5. hopefully you don't mind it being 70h since there's no queue

while I did enjoy p5, I don't really plan on playing any more persona soon, they are really just too long. There is no queue right, but honestly I don't think i'm going to play what could probably the second longest game i've ever beaten (just behind p5) based on a recommendation of someone who hasn't even completed it

Radiation House

------------

I think the core of this manga is really good, it's just maybe there is too much fluff, the good is too diluted

Radiation House is a still ongoing medical drama manga following a radiologist who is very good and very skilled. The structure of the manga is quite reminiscent of a CGDCT manga, as it is fairly goaless. It's not a murder mistery when, whenver they catch the killer that's the end of the manga, instead patients just come and go, and the manga showcases different problems and different diagnosis and tries to educate the reader.

This is a manga with A LOT of exposition dialogue, because again, I feel a lot of the focus of this manga is purely educational. The protagonist will dedicate a whole chapter about monologuing about the specific intricacies of a diagnosis citing real world cases, I think it's a very interesting read in that regard, and again, reminds me of CGDCT anime, as those are also very educational.

At least for the first third or so of the manga, it also humanizes the profession of a radiologist quite a bit. First of all, they just do diagnosis, they aren't doing the surgeries or curing the patients, and sometimes you just got to say to the patient "lmao you're going to die", which is sad, and I really like that. Another aspect is that it shows that medical professionals can also make mistake, that health science is complicated, that while the career may be long, there are still new advancemetns and things that are not taught, and that the medics may not yet understand

What I do dislike is that there is a subtle powerscaling on the manga, I feel the cases do get more intense, kinda abandoning what I said of humanizing the radiologist and having the protagonist be extremely heroic and superhuman, like in one section where they solve a crime, I don't know, I felt that was excessive, they start trying to add more character arcs and drama between the cast and I just think it pushes the manga away from what it does best, that is all the actual medical stuff

the art is really solid but I don't think the manga takes much advantage on it. I remember, it was around chapter 35, I remember there being some panels that quite shocked me in how good they were, and further along the manga you can spot really subtle techniques and stuff that are REALLY good but the manga doesn't really allow the art to shine, I don't think there are many big panels or moments where you can go "holy shit the art is GOOD" which is a shame because really, the mangaka can draw very, very well

so yeah, just a solid manga where I don't think all the potential is realized, the good segments are really good but I wish there was less stuff between the good segments you know

I watched it while it was airing and I greatly enjoyed it

chi is a anime about the discovery of the astronomical model of heliocentrism, and all the problems that created with the church. While it's very known that the church wasn't exactly a big fan of changes like this, there aren't really all that many movies or animes about it

chi offers once again a really detailed picture of not only how the research was conducted, but of how it was to live in that era, the anime shifts between many characters and I feel every character offers a different perspective on the society of it's time, from the priviliged to the poor, from men to women, from believer to non believer, etc.

I don't think it's a spoiler to say chi is a very brutal anime, like i'm surprised at the ammount of characters that die, and I really enjoy how death is portrayed in this anime, it's not always dramatic or like the climax of the character arc or whatever, most of the deaths in this anime and unceremonious and unfair. This anime isn't supposed to have "hype momenst and aura", it's just a portrayal of it's era

the art is fucking amazing, like the sky looks STUNNING, you see it and you understand why every character in this anime is seemengly interest in astronomy LMAO, I don't really have much to say other than that

the ending is just also really good, it turns out that at the end of the day, what seemed like to be the big moment where the theory was complete and was going to be released to the public... never ends up happening, the anime ends with a message that goes "oh yeah this shit went on for another 200 years lmao" or something like that, I don't remember the exact timeframe, but you didn't feel cheated out

the anime carries this concept of that while you may die, your ideas may persist. The first protagonist basically commited suicide due to that mindset, them failing doesn't come to great surprise having seen the brutality of that era, but it's hopeful, we live in the current day and you know their research does end up making it big and revolutianizing the world, the anime didn't want to show the full process, it didn't just want to show the life of the final guy, they wanted to depict the era, and they do an amazing job at that

really solid anime, great animation, really interesting story of astronomy, great commentary on the era, super cool narrative structure, great finale, I don't know what else to say, this is a S rank.

Akane Banashi

I need to stop reading the shounen jump, this is truly going to be the what kills me

The previous manga that I read on this thread, radiation house, started publication in late 2015, and now, almost 10 years later, it has released 12 volumes, pretty impressive, nice, steady rate. Akane banashi started publishing in early 2022, and now, 3 years later, it has 17 volumes.

I very much didn't enjoy akane banashi. It is a manga about rakugo, in the same way ping pong is a anime about football. Akane banashi follows akane, a young promising rakugo star, rakugo being the old japanese type of theater where it's just one guy sitting and doing all the characters and telling a funny or interesting story. Mangas about rakugo or featuring are nothing new, in fact, I think this is the third i've seen. It is a very ancient way of storytelling, and frankly, a dying one, it's popularity is limited and most of it's audience is old, it's not something new generations generally engage with.

However, the essence of rakugo, the one guy sitting talking, I feel that even in 2025, there is value to that, like, hell, you could probably replicate the whole 1962 movie harakiri in rakugo format, and that shit is amazing, so it's not like you can tell a compelling story with rakugo.

Whenever rakugo is usually displayed on screen, it's usually very slow, very calm, very introspective, as this type of ancient theater is considered noble by society standard.

So how does akane bashi deal with rakugo? well, they just use it as a medium to have different characters fight. Instead of a fist fight, or a fight with magical powers, or even playing volleyball, they just do rakugo. Again, this is nothing new, maybe the specifics are, but using a third thing to make characters fight without actual violence is a tale as old as time.

In most manga, whenever they're explaining something, they just do some narration or exposition dialogue, of the character calmly explaining how something works, like for example, in radiation hosue, they explained a lot of medical science, in yuru camp, they teach about camping and local views, however, akane banashi isn't like this, if you end up learning about rakugo, that ends up being a side effect.

There is a difference between going "He is currently doing a technique known as [...] which involves doing small talk before telling the story to see the moods of the audience", and, HOLY SHIT, HE IS DOING THE [...] TECHNIQUE?!?!?! HE IS TALKING TO THE PEOPLE TO KNOW THEIR MOODS!!! HE IS TO BE FEARED... if you couldn't already guess, the second is what the manga uses.

It's not only the dialogue that is like that, but the art too, the lighting and shadows are menacing, the way the characters are introduced feels like they're talking about enemies to be feared, sometimes they do these imaginary backgrounds, which is a very common technique don't get me wrong, featuring skeletons and generally unpleasant things to show the power of the adversary

so yeah, this is just a typical battle shounen, just with a layer of abstraction. That battle shounen story isn't particullary interesting either, I don't feel like it's trying to say a message, it isn't making me any strong emotions, in fact, I was just bored half the manga, the story is exceedingly typical. If i'm being cynical, I would say the rakugo layer just tries to give a artsy feel to the manga, whenever it isn't like that.

Your review pretty much echoed my thoughts, though I think it's a decent manga for what it is. I feel like Akane-banashi is a poor man's act-age (rip), but it focuses too much on shounen instead of rakugo and personal stories. The constant power levels were especially annoying.

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju had a much better rakugo story, can you review that too? Either manga or anime, but I only watched the anime.

I did read it when it initially came out but it wasn't requested

it's kinda bad, art is extremely plain, and kinda uninspered, it's all very standard paneling, and the character designs/backgrounds, outside of the obvious references aren't exactly polished, it's no usuzumi no hate it's my point. The oneshot just repeats a lot of anime tropes repeating it to osu, which I know it's supposed to be the comedy but it just doesn't land, repeated with the osu memes which eh. I don't think shounens work well on a oneshot format, given that you don't have the emotional weight of the training arc or frankly care about any of the characters.

It's just a funny "haha it's osu!", but there really isn't anything else going for it. D rank.

Ichigo Mashimiro

Starting in 2002, it's actually one of the first CGDCT manga/anime to exist, and honestly you can tell why the genre stuck around, ichigo mashimiro is quite good

Ichigo Mashimiro is a comedy manga, following five prepubescent girls with very marked personality, getting into silly situations, really, it's nothing new, but it's this way because in a way it kinda set, or at least helped to solidify the character archetipes and general style of story.

The characters are cute and the story is very light hearted, the fact that they're kids contribute to each one having such a marked personality while also being dumb as fuck, the comedy is very over the top, there is no real end goal for the manga, that's why it's still ongoing, you just read it to relax and have a good time

I don't really have much to say as it's a really basic manga and also I read it a long time ago, but yeah, I greatly enjoyed it, placed on A rank

Natsu e no Tunnel, Sayonara no Deguchi

typical short romantic anime, but i'm a sucker for this type of anime, and I thoguht it was beautiful

the anime is about this guy who meets this girl, both in bad family and life circumstances, and they become close, at the same time, they discover a tunnel that supposedly can grant any dream, however, it seems time in the tunnel passes much slower than in the outside, meaning a couple seconds in the tunnel are hours in the real world. The anime is as predictible as this type of anime can be, but honestly, I don't mind it.

The nature or origin of the tunnel is never explained, that is because it's not needed, the anime has a clear cut purposue and it wouldn't really make sense to dwell on such details.

The anime is about escapism and moving on, I can't say much without going into spoilers tho, the tunnel actually turns out to be a way to recover something that was lost, and since the girl didn't actually lose anything, she couldn't take advantage of it. However, that shows two different ways of dealing with a bad situation, one way is the one the guy took, of running away, wishing that things went back how they were at the start, versus moving on, and just trying to make a better future, one wishes to live in the past forever, and the other to make a future better than that past.

when put at it this way, it's obvious the guy is in the wrong, however, in the specific family circumstances he was in, given his age, and the fact that there is a fucking magical tunnel that can make dreams come true, I honestly don't think that logic really applies, I mean it's still a bad choice, but I don't think we can blame the guy for making such mistake, I feel everyone would have. Thankfully, the tunnel can be used multiple times, allowing him to come back and start a relationship with a girl despite the problematic 13 year age gap which you know really cute anime and shit but like that's something to take consideration of.

I think this anime is very effective emotionally. Both characters are far from stupid, and it's easy to empathize with their situation, to understand their decisions, which just makes all that ending segment all the better.

deltarune (up to chapter 4), spoiler tagging everything, just in case

Deltarune is a RPG that is kinda like a follow up to undertale but not really, created by toby fox and friends, and IMO, it's kino, it's kamige, it's peak, it's a 10/10, idk what more slang can I use

I already talked about undertale and length and toby fox very internet heavy way of writing, I recommend reading that first.

Deltarune, as it's commonly known, acts as a subversion of undertale, which at the same time was a subversion of the RPG genre, while undertale had many endings, deltarune apparently only has one, while in undertale frisk is just your typical mute character, kris does have a personality, and can even act without the player input, in fact, you also control a party like in more typical rpg

while all of these things would make it more similar to regular RPG's, somehow, it has just made toby fox games even more unique, you can even play other subversive RPGs like lisa or off, or even ones directly inspird by undertale like everhood, but deltarune is still unique. While it featuers elements that many RPG's share, deltarune does it different.

The writing style of toby fox of being very online also translates into plot decisions and the general mood of the game. First of all, it's rare to see a RPG set on a modern setting, even when it does, things like the internet or computers are rarely involved, hell, this even applies to most other games or movies.

We need to understand that the internet has probably fucked the entire world up and we live in a era never seen before in human history where no one knows what is going on and what we should do, in fact, most artistic mediums predate the invention of the internet, meaning, that like 90% of films or books, many pieces of arts that we consider masterpieces, were not created in a world where the internet existed.

The repercusions of this are still very much seen nowadays, writing stories in a post-internet world is hard, most typical plot devices and in general plot ideas don't work, it's harder to find good reference material, and it really requires a very different mindset.

Deltarune not only writes about these types of unusual topics directly, by you know, the obvious things of mentioning videogames or like the entire concept of chapter 3 playing retro games and whatever, but also indirectly. Toby fox is aware of fandoms, secret hunting, personal experiences and shared nostalgia in the internet age, etc, and it really, really shows.

For me, the standout aspect of deltarune is the chemistry between kris, ralsei and susie, and I honestly don't think that toby fox is just that fucking good at writing that they can blow any other artist in the past 100 years out of the water. I just think the way he handles writing hits home a lot more at least for our generation.

Like in undertale, the way the characters talk are how we talk via internet messages, it takes a lot of expressions and little jokes from internet comedy, it's not hard to see pararelisms between some visual gags and youtube animated videos. The character designs are also very much big contributing factors, being gender ambiguous and furry, it all adds to a very specific feel

Toby fox isn't asking for you to engage with it in a very specific way, instead, it predicts and prepares for the player to engage with it in many different ways. While there is apparently only one ending, there is still freedom of choice. There is A LOT of small details, like for example naming yourself "ass" in chapter 3, that triggers a interaction, deltarune is special in the sense that regardless of how you play it, you still feel "holy shit did he just do that thinking specifically on me or what is going on?"

the actually story structure of deltarune is also fairly unique. Deltarune is released on episodes, that is because toby fox and friends are still a indie studio and they take a really long time to finish each section of the game, however, the game is far, far from episodical. It's true that every chapter starts and ends a dark world, but it's still very much interconnected. Honestly instead of thinking of dark worlds think of it as section of the map in a open world game, or moving to a different area in typical rpgs. It's virtually the same

due to the distribution method, and the incredibly big fandom that has formed around the game, toby fox feeds the community a shitload of secrets to keep them entertained in the meantime, and not fall into a silksong situation where people are actually frustrated and pained by the developement cycle of that game. Deltarune has a lot, and I mean, a lot, of theorybait. Personally I don't really fuck with this all that much, I only pay attention to it in deltarune because I got emotionally invested at it on a early age where the games mean something to me and I really want to inmmerse myself on them as much as possible, but the way it's implemented is smart

most of the secrets are very much accessible ingame, there is some stuff that you need to datamine, but that mostly are just weird lines of dialogue. Undertale had the FUN value system to make sure you would trigger some specific weird shit in your playthrough, deltarune doesn't need it, because it's so infested by obscure secret, that you're bound to find something while playing blind just based on pure luck. Secret bosses, secret areas, extra dialogue, whatever, and as I said earlier, taht adds to the feeling of you feeling noticed ingame. The game preparing for you and you being able to find something that you know most people have missed or didn't trigger for them, that's cool. You can act like a furious fan and find everything and theorize until the next chapter comes out, or you can just play it blind and still interact with some secrets and be amazed by it

I can't say much on the actual plot of deltarune because it's not finished, it seems to be saying something about escapism and stuff but it's hard to really extract anything too deep until we see the full story. While chapter 4 is amazing on it's own right on how it sets everything up, how the characters evolve and stuff, it's still just that, one chapter

also deltarune has probably more comedy than 95% of videogames and it does it MASTERFULLY and I need more videogames trying to be funny

Taxi (1998)

I actualy think I've seen like 5-10 minutes of this movie when I was a kid

anyways this movie was surprisingly boring. It's about this guy who is a reckless drivers and starts driving a taxi, first he does his job driving around people but then he gets involved with the police and some crime stuff.

While it is tagged as a comedy, I honestly didn't laugh much?, there aren't that many jokes and they're fairly spread out, and then those same jokes they're never anything too special nothing that really struck me and stayed with me. The actual stunt was funny the first time we saw the taxi's true form, but after that, it stops being surprising, and I feel the actual driving stunts takes a more serious approach

I don't understand what was the goal with the plot of the movie, it's neither facilitating comedy (maybe it did, and none of the jokes landed, tho I do think it taes itself more sriously than not, like for the example on one of the stunts, there they driving and they hide away to paint the car and then cross the border, that whole segment felt very serious), nor does it say any thing really interesting. It feels like a drama but ot does not havy any insightful commentary like a drama usually would

another thing I take issue with the movie is the actual feeling of speed. It may be beacuse I don't yet own a drivers license and am worse at judging speeds because of that, but whenever the first stunt was done, they reported that the speed was 210KM/H, and I was surprised, because it really did not feel THAT fast.

I blame this on the cinematography. If you look at most other movies where cars goes fast, even one as wacky as speed racer, there are many tricks employed to give the feeling of speed, the shaky camera, the close up of the characters, objects ouf of focus becoming blurry and distorted, the sound of the engines and the road, hearing soounds of the pedestrians or whatever only for them to be immediatly too far to hear. Taxi does nothing of this sort really. It just shows the cars going fast, which, while they may be going at the speed than what they advertised, it really doesn't giveyou that adrenaline and that actual feeling of speed

so yeah didn't really like it that much, placed on D rank

Idea stolen from sametdze, and inspired by the fact that I wrote more words than I should have about ned flanders in the AYA thread by also sametdze

give a book, a movie, an anime or manga (or even a videogame) and I will do my best to complete it and write a little essay about it. Or just about single characters or concepts. I have time on my hands and I think I may be able to do it (but please, be something that you yourself have played/read/whatever)

WHAT I DON'T ACCEPT:

-Horror (may be exceptions but generally not)

-Music (I'm not into music and I wouldn't have much to say other than I liked it/not)

-Plot-light videogames (I mostly know how to speak about and i'm interested in talking about the narrative side of things, if the only real thing I can talk about is gameplay design I may not have that much to say)

-Really long stuff (For videogames, make it nor surpass 15 hours in howlongtobeat, I generally do exceptions depending on the length of the queue, for anime, keep it under 50 episodes)

-Fandom heavy content (If you need to be part of a fandom to really enjoy or understand something, don't request it)

-Youtube heavy content (Things that one normally interact with via youtube videos, for example, an ARG, no one solves an arg by themselves, you just watch the video about how it got solved, I'm not interested in doing this sort of stuff. I also dislike things that are with the idea of baiting youtube videos or whatever, i'm not matpat, don't expect me to analyze hello neighbour or fnaf)

-ecchi/harem/sexual stuff (i'm not doing this thread to get horny)

-autobiographical stories (feels bad to criticise) these)

as an added requirement, PLEASE have played the game/read the book/etc yourself, don't request things you yourself haven't experienced

Wait, it looks like Machikado Mazoku hasn't been recommended yet... let me fix that.

Machikado Mazoku.

Also: Joshiraku, Flying Witch, Amaama to Inazuma, and Asobi Asobase.

By the way, how many anime can I recommend at once? If I can recommend more, I'm also curious to know your thoughts on Bokura wa Minna Kawai-sou, Charlotte, Endro~!, and Yuyushiki (I had given Yuyushiki a 6, but I'm still interested in what you think of it).

Machikado Mazoku

In my humble opinion, this is probably the best magical girl anime.

Magical girl anime isn't currently on it's best foot. While animes like sailor moon and cardcaptor sakura are extremely famous and culturally important, magical girl as a genre never became that mainstream, at least not to the point we would have a third anime to name in that sentence,

Magical girl anime basically acted as combat shounen for women, combat shoujo if you will. And honestly, they were really fucking good, probably some of the best shounens ever IMO. They were also very ahead of it's time with art and didn't fall into the pittraps most shounens fell in.

Part of the essence of those magical girl anime was how over the top where they were their feminity, every scene was covered in flower, all the guys were hot, they used the powers of love and friendship, etc. All of that made magical girls feel a lot more sweet and light than shounens, where they were supposed to be raw and male, and I think machikado mazoku may be the best at translating that same energy into a modern magical girl anime

Machikazo mazoku is a magical girl slice of life/comedy where this girl wakes up and discovers she is a demon and that her family had been cursed to live with very few money each month, one of her classmates turns out to be a magical girl, whose job is to erradicate demons, then, the goal of shamiko, the protagonist is to try to defeat momo, the magical girl. However momo turns out to be really nice and like doesn't do her job as a magical girl as she refuses to kill her.

here we have all the elements that really composed old magical girl anime in a modern setting, all translated into a new genre (slice of life/comedy), and it really works, the essence is very much there, it's as fluffy, cute, and feminine (like this anime is also borderline yuri) as older anime, and it really works REALLY well, since thoe are elements that also work REALLY well in a slice of life

slice of life really benefits of all that cute fluffy stuff, since most slice of life already try to achieve something similar. You can also add small jokes subverting typical tropes like transformation scenes and again, just really works

I want to also compare machikado mazoku to madoka magica, because in my opinion, both have a similar goal in a certain sense. Both are adapting magical girls to the modern day, however, while machikado keeps the essence, madoka doesn't

madoka is supposed to subvert your typical magical girl anime and make it dark and adult and whatever, but by doing that I think it really kills that essence of magical girl

so yeah I fucking love machikado mazoku A rank (was considering S rank for a bit tho)

-----------------------------

Flying witch

read the manga for this one, I enjoyed, I also don't remember a lot from it

Magical witch is about this girl who moves to a more traditional and rural town, with the goal of training to become a witch, and I think it's quite good

the manga is very much a iyashikei, meaning it's meant to be really relaxing, and I think it's quite good at this. Again, magic in slice of life is very much a proven concept. I feel the cultural perception of witches have slowly switched away from the inquisition and them being bad and deadly and whatever to the lo-fi studying girl.

Magic is just fun, and people want to write about magic and fantasize about magic in non/combat scenarios, in a way there is a paralellism here to machikado mazoku. Very broadly,wWitches are the female version of a male wizard, and while wizards are almost imagined in high fantasy, action scenarios, casting fireball and the such, witches instead have evolved to mostly be present in more modern scenarios (while the towns are still rural, the actual timeframe witches story take up nowadays are mostly modern times), and for them to be mostly non/action.

So yeah, flying witch just really delivers on that modern wish of wanting to just live a slow and relaxing life casting spells, I once again, greatly enjoyed. Placed on A rank.

Next: Endro~!

I also think the anime is very good, but I think it's arguable that it could be considered a parody of the genre (or at least close to it). If the best magical girl anime is actually closer to a parody than to the classic genre, that would be kind of sad...

Also, shoujo anime is by definition supposed to attract more women than men, which is not the case here. If it's not shoujo, maybe it can't be true mahou shoujo.

Patatitta
idk, while it plays jokes with some of the tropes, I wouldn't qualfiy machikado mazoku as a parody, mainly because on it's essence is still very much just a magial girl anime and it's proud of that. And again, while it may not be shoujo in terms of demographic (given that slice of life anime as far as I know is not really gendered), it's still pretty much the opposite of a combat shounen, with pure magical girl anime it was that way beacuse of what I said, it being cutesy and femenine as opposed to raw and masculine, but with machikado mazoku specially, since it's quite literally the opposite of people beating each other up, being, people befriending each other up

I think in a world where shounen have become this mainstream, and honestly have sometimes a majority female audiences in specific cases (like with jujutsu kaisen), I think shoujos evolving into a more slice of life path (let's remember things like natsume book of friends are shoujo) is the logical outcome

Endro~!

While CGDCT are a genre you put on to relax, not having the most complex stories or making you feel negative emotions, that doesn't mean you should expect the viewer to not have any sort of critical eye.

Endro starts with a group of adventurers defeating the evil demon king, for credits to roll, and for them to wake up in bed and start going to school. This is a good setup, what happens in the happily ever after, what happens to them after everything is done for, in fact, this is the setup frieren would do (tho translated into a different genre and with different age characters) and would be praised for a lot (even if frieren doesn't even really scratch the surface of that setup either).

The main problem I have with this anime is that the plot is complete nosense, as this episode 1 will be basically decanonized by the end. The first couple episodes goes great, technically the hero is no longer the hero because her being a hero would require there being a demon king, except the loli teacher with evil demon wings is in fact the reborn demon lord. Then you have your standard plot of the demon king tris to get the hero to fail in all sort of ways only for that to backfire

again, up to episode 5 or so?, it's good, problem is that they start making a lot of contradictions in the plot, not spoiler tagging but, oh it turns out they traveled through time and they also lost some of their memories and also [...], it's just a very, very contrived story and solutions to problems the anime didn't have, which directly contradicts which comes after and before it. Th eanime ending is also extremely bad, it feels rushed from a narrative standpoint, like the writers saw they were at the penultimate episode and said "shit we need to end this somehow" which just caused a final episode where the plot becomes even more contrived and contradictory

there is also the part where the princess has a crush on the protagonist and kidnaps herself beacuse she gets sexual pleasure from watching the hero be heroic, which is honestly like 2 steps aways from the plot of ichi the killer, and if your cgdct is that close to ichi the killer you may have to rethink your decisions in life. To this the princess apologizes and everyone goes "haha no problem!" and is never mentioned again for the remaining of the anime despite being a honestly kinda unforgivable and mentally derranged thing to do

it's just, CGDCT should help you relax, to get into that state of mind, it's true that while you're there, you have a greater suspension of disbelief, but that doesn't imply that the anime should make decisions as if you have no critical vision

the later half of the anime also features a lot of flashbacks and a lot of reused content, there was a point where I didn't know if I was watching a recap episode or not

the rest of the anime is pretty standard, nothing much I really want to talk about, so yeah, pretty terrible anime, D rank.

next: Workshop of fun

Maybe I don't have that critical eye... Maybe that's why my average rating on MAL is 8.67...

Asobi Asobase

While I didn't think it was bad, like, there weren't any things I believed were genuine problems like with the last anime, I for sure didn't like it.

Asobi Asobase is a comedy anime following three high school students, each one with a very marked personalities, pretty standard stuff. The main difference of this anime with other of the same genres, and the reason why I disliked this anime, is the type of comedy they employ.

Asobi Asobase mainly employs gross humour, pee and poop jokes, extremely non-moe faces, the teacher being a weird pervert with unusual fetishes, etc. You're meant to be repulsed by it which leads to comedy. While this is a comedy style that is fairly common (not so much in anime tho, I do remember seeing it a lot in western cartoons and some comedy movies), it's not a style I really enjoy

the actual animation was nice tho, I think it has a very unique visual style, using very bright colors, and feeling a lot like a drawing, but like a drawing you did in a a highschool notebook that you've not opened for a year so it has like very white spots where it feels nothing is drawn there, I like that

so yeah, nothing against this anime, I just don't fuck with it's comedy style. D rank.

-----------

Do it yourself

slice of life CGDCT anime about girls doing DIY stuff (i'm actually surprised english doesn't have a better word for this rather than DIY like how the fuck DIY feels like a modern term right you did not have a word to really encompass that field of activities better?????? like we say bricolaje in spanish). The girls are moe and watching the anime is relaxing.

i've seen this anime a while ago now and honestly there isn't really much I want to say, I like the animation style, it's often very polygonal, lot of straight lines across this anime, not the first time i've seen it but I enjoy it so it's always a welcome thing. I think character design is unique and very distinctive, often having a very particular, less common but still common and societal acceptable clothing item. Also, I found I have a soft spot for characters with bandaids, which is honestly such a bizarre fashion decision but honestly whoever invented that and realized that work is a fucking genious that shit is so cute

unlike most CGDCT anime this does kind of have an end goal, which is to build a treehouse. Not very common for CGDCT anime to have a solid endpoint, but I think it works really well, the actual anime up to that is just kind of a bit of very light drama of recruiting club members and learning the skills needed, the treehouse working as a sueprproject that is the climax of what they have accomplished across the anime

it's good, I enjoyed it and I recommend it. A rank. Will update the actual tier list tomorrow if I remember because today I am tired and will be going directly to bed, good night

Saihate Station

didn't play the DLC because it wasn't available on a language I could understand

short horror/toxic yaoi game with a point and click adventure gameplay loop. The game doesn't do anything that is that new or that shocking, everything it does i've seen it before, however, that doesn't make the game bad by any means, if anything, I tihnk it's a really polished game, lot's of small detail that I really enjoyed.

I think the story is tight, the paranormal/horror feel is a good way to tie into the psychological story they were trying to tell, the dialogue is well written and I really appreciate placing stopping points in some of the sentences so the text would take a few fractions of a second longer to scroll from that point giving part of the dialogue more emphasis. Some set scenes, like the optional mirror scenes, while nothing revolutionary (been a tried and tested thing in indie games since undertale did the "despite everything, it's still you", tho, omori REALLY popularized this set piece, having a mirror that after a specific point of the game had a small % chance of jumpscaring you which is honestly so sick because not everyone will see that scare), I think the mirror scene really serves a purpouse and is well done, it's not copying for the sake of copying, not because they liked the visuals and the feel and tried to emulate it without understanding the actual depth of it, the dev clearly understood what they were doing and they told their story in a really effective manner

now, the actual story, i'm more conflicted on. It's again, something I know a lot of people enjoy but something that I never quite understood the appeal. As I said on the beginning, this is a toxic yaoi game, there are two main characters, and there is a lot of romantic subtext between them which is basically confiremd on one of the endings. Spoiler warning, tho I think you may figure out reading reviews and the synopsis and screenshots of the game. turns out, your coworker is mentally derranged, essentially a yandere. And this is the part that I have conflicted feelings on. While this is a horror game, a lot of the scenes feel like they're meant to be arousing,

Again, not a new concept, yanderes have existed since forever, and some people have always been lusting over them, but recently it became more popular. This popularity surge I feel actually came from outside that otaku internet space, but instead, with the popularization of dark romance novels. This type of novel are mainly books targetted torwards women, which follow a female protagonist whose life somehow get intermingled with a male who is usually in some sort of position of power torwards her, for example a common trope is a mafia boss that kidnapped the protagonist. After that a relationship starts to form. These relationships are unethical, toxic, horrible to be in IRL, often consisting of coaxing or rape, but you know, fantasies like that are something that a lot of people find erotic.

This also happened in online LGBTQ+ spaces with toxic yuri and toxic yaoi, which are very similar, just very, as the name implies, toxic relationships, that would be hell to be in IRL, but are arousing.

The problem is that in the current era, sexuality is very much a taboo subject, it's considered a more valid reason to say "I enjoy this game for the story" rather than "I find this game to be very arousing", which I feel taints a bit of internet discussion, like, I'm sorry but you're NOT playing nikke for the story. Not saying that these people are lying, it's very easy to gaslight yourself to believe other elements of the game are peak just becuase you at a personal level don't want to admit it's arousing.

All of this IMO kinda muddies the message of the game, it's not explicitely erotic, but instead all covered in subtext and mashed in with what would be a typically artsy videogame. I've completed the game but I honestly struggle to find a takeaway from it. In normal videogame logic, the ending that is hardest to get is the true ending, and in this case, the true ending would be the one where you decide to stay with your newly found mentally insane dominant boyfriend. I didn't get that ending, and while I enjoyed going through the motions of the game, some cscenes got me to really feel stuff, I don't know if the story really meant anything to me.

It's a very well done game, undeniably so, I just don't know if this is exactly for me, C rank.

short horror/toxic yaoi game with a point and click adventure gameplay loop.

Some set scenes, like the optional mirror scenes, while nothing revolutionary (been a tried and tested thing in indie games since undertale did the "despite everything, it's still you", tho, omori REALLY popularized this set piece, having a mirror that after a specific point of the game had a small % chance of jumpscaring you which is honestly so sick because not everyone will see that scare), I think the mirror scene really serves a purpouse and is well done, it's not copying for the sake of copying, not because they liked the visuals and the feel and tried to emulate it without understanding the actual depth of it, the dev clearly understood what they were doing and they told their story in a really effective manner

haha i'm glad you found some parts interesting, admittedly i got attracted to the game because i'm one of the people who unironically likes the yandere genre. don't get me wrong, it's cool to imagine but if i were to handle it irl it would definitely put a toll on me. thats asking for a death wish lol. either way i'm glad by how honest you were on your personal thoughts of the game

also while you're at it i'm requesting you to do an analysis of azatus (literally my oc). it's just an excuse for criticism in order to improve my characters more

reading it, what you have is just personality data, not something I can talk that much by itself. It's like worldbuilding, sure, it's a fun activity a large ammount of people seem to do, not writing a story, just pure worldbuilding, but at the same time, worldbuilding is only good or bad depending on the story it's placed in, a nonsensical world can be good in certain context, as well as a hyper realistic one

with personality data is the same thing, tho even more extreme. People can be any sort of way, writing a personality that is frankly impossible for anyone on earth to have seems way harder than the opposite, and even then, that may serve to a bigger purpouse if you write a story involving those characters. Your character is neither well written nor bad written, since charcters by themselves, devoid of context, can't be inherently well written or bad written.

Vivid/Stasis (Dropped)

I didn't drop it because it didn't qualify the thread, it completely did, I just was having no fun with it.

Vivid/Stasis is a 4k rhythm game / visual novel with ARG style puzzles. Every element on itself seems to work, but in conjunction is just a total mess. The rhythm game segment were pretty solid, the engine was good tho I had a frame drop once, but it may have been my pc, the songs are cool tho not peak, and the charting was ok. They introduce a new mechanic called bumpers that works as a note that can be hit by pressing any key on the corresponding hand, imagine sound voltex that has those big orange notes but they're pressed by pressing either one of the two left or two right ones.

I don't think they really utilize bumpers that well from what i've played. They mainly work as a reading challenge but I think they don't pull it off in a way that feels satisfactory, from what i've played in rhythm games, there is a certain beauty to a good reading challenge, it's very satisfactory, but with vivid stasis all the charts feels very messy, sometimes you missread but you're able to singletap fast enough to where it doens't actually punish you but totally messed with the flow and feel of the play.

I will applaud that the default keybinds where pretty good, they clearly played etterna/osu, this may seem like a weird thing to point out but god so many games have included 4k segments that are controlled by arrow keys and they're just the worst to play, this actually has sdjk keybinds. The only other narrative game i've seen have good keybinds is "until then"

Now, the rhythm game elements are story elements are quite separate, you play songs to get points to unlock visual novel segments, I don't like this system. The harder the song is the more points you get, this sounds logical in paper, but I think it's a bad call. I have some experience in 4k games, i'm not exactly competitive at them, but i'm for sure better than someone who is new at it, so when I opened the game and saw I had to unlock the story, I played a "course", which is basically a dan course, I think it was level 11 or 12 and I got two S ranks and two AA, that gave me enough points to clear the ENTIRE story for that chapter.

This is a system that benefits players who are already familiar with the genre and punishes one that doesn't, which is the problem, because people who are not rhythm game fans are probably playin because of the story, while the ones that are good for the rhythm game segment, so why are you gifting the rhythm game players the story and making the story players beg for it?

Worst part was when I finished reading up to the end of the chapter, that had a ARG puzzle, I will talk a bit more about it later, but the point is, it asked me to get 500+ combo on 5 songs of the difficulty I was aiming at to unlock it, OR I could solve the puzzle already, but I would be playing the boss song at the lowest difficulty, making it less hype.

So, after I binge read the story, at the very climax of it, you say "go grind 5 random songs, whichever you want, then come back here"!, what a way to kill the momentum jesus chirst

the actual 500+ combo requirement was also pretty insane, again, I was playing on "finale" difficulty that were songs between 10 and 13 of difficulty, getting S and AA and I was not getting 500 combo, I had to play on a lower difficulty and that just made it a whole less exciting

the actual story felt very gimmicky, you are directly thrown into a mistery surrounding one character, but we've really hadn't have much character developement, so it felt hard to care, instead, the story was aiming for this ARG type mistery stuff?, like the characters find a creepy arg-ish video and they go exploring but bad things happens and etc

I've only played up to partway through chapter 2, but the actual story didn't seem to be trying to say much, it was entirerily based on the mistery, so it's not like omori that it goes "find mari!" but then the story just really develops and it's in the search that the true message of the game is found, it's nothing like that.

The actual puzzle you solve and the ones that the characters solve in the story are also separate, so it's not like you're recieving the satisfaction of solving the mistery yourself. There is nothing wrong with this approach, watching people solve a mistery is satisfying, but for the love of god, if you're going to include puzzle on the game, why not make it them the actual puzzles the characters are facing, it jus seems like such a waste.

the whole game in a way feels meaningless, it tries to do so much but nothing really combines well, the story is this ARG type stuff surrounding characters you don't care about, the rhythm game is good but why would you play this over osu or etterna.

Now, the actual ARG puzzles, they're bad. They feel like they're there just because the dev thinks ARGs are cool, but it's just, it being a ARG doesn't contribute anything to the game. When games implement ARG stuff, think of off or inscription, they do it for ambience, it's a way of breaking the 4th wall, in off it works to make the game feel even more bizarre and in inscryption to make it feel creepy, but in here, I don't know what they were trying to accomplish, felt they watched video youtube essays and said "let's copy that!"

they didn't feel super amazing to solve either, the problem with ARG is that by breaking any boundaries it opens up the fan of possibilities A LOT. Let's put a famous game, portal 2, you got the chamber and the portal gun, you know exactly what are the tools you've got to work with and where to look, with games like off and inscryption, these ARG puzzles are never very complex and have very clear directions to where to look. It's less a difficult challenge and more poking at you and breaking the 4th wall

but here, you're just opening a website for the user and expecting them to solve it, bitch it could be ANYTHING, you no longer have a portal gun and a chamber, you have your entire computer to work with. Maybe it's the html code?, maybe it does something at a certain hour of the day?, maybe it's the url itself?, just play around until you find a solution that works!

thankfully the first episode chapter that was the one that I found wasn't very difficult, but yeah I can imagine it being a problem in the future as I think the philosophy is quite bad.

Also, pet peeve of mine, the vn segments show the actual hour ingame, but that clock doesn't move. I read half a chapter once and it apparently all took place inside a single minute which must be a oversight by the dev.

Also, the text position seemed bugged, a lot of the time it felt way too close at the bottom of the screen and some text overlapped with each other

So yeah, it just feels pointless, D rank, queue empty.

i knew something was wrong with the game beforehand, and like you said i just play it for the levels and stuff. the whole story never engaged me on a personal level which sucks i guess because people are sugarcoating it so much on steam reviews. i wish i could understand them

on another note, i haven't actually seen you analyze mother 3, can you do that? it's one of my favorite games actually

already played it sooo

Mother 3:

I frankly don't have that much to say about mother 3? which may seem surprising given how beloved of a game it is and how it inspired many of my favourites

I think in terms of gameplay it's less annoying than earthbound (mother 2), it adds a new timing mechanic to the hit, which I never was able to nail but may have also been because emulator input delay, I do not know.

I think the biggest appeal and frankly part of the popularity of mother 3 in the modern day is that it, in combination with earthboumd, were the first real mainstream RPG to really try to tell a serious story. Videogames as an artform were not really that accepted back in the day, so seeing a more adult game, tackling political issues and coming from nintendo, yeah, it absolutely shocked everyone.

The story is very much about capitalism, initially the town the protagonist lives in actually doens't really have currency, and then the pigmasks come, this technologically superior faction to implement currency and a capitalist system promising the citizens the whole entire world, and actively getting rid of the ones that oppose it. When the actually not politically motivated protagonist begins their fight against the pigmasks, he kinda just discovers the truth of the organization and what it does for people

I think the visuals in mother 3 are interesting, because frankly, they're not very different than the other rpgs being pushed at around the same time, which kinda worked in that favour of subverting your expectations by actually having a good plot

the 4th wall stuff was also cool, it doesn't do anything crazy with it, mainly for jokes, but it's unexpected and fun.

it's just a very artsy game at a time where it wasn't common, in my personal opinion we've done better games since then, but yeah, it's just very historically important. It's a B rank for me just due to personal preference, but yeah, no hate against it, really well done videogame and a important one at that.
