Whiplash

it's really fucking good, I'm not going to spoiler tag anything since I assume everyone is familiar with whiplash due to it being a modern classic and all

it's a movie about a guy who plays drums, and wants to get better at drums, so he starts practicing under this instructor which is like the strictest, most awful human being to ever work under

The objective of the instructor is to create a legend in the jazz sphere, and he strongly believes the best way to create someone like that is to push someone to their absolute max, to not settle for anything under perfection, it being painful being painful was a required evil

This is actually a philosophy that many people do hold, honestly, if you just search in youtube you can find tons of videos on whiplash that glorify this mentality, that believes that fletcher was in the right for pushing neiman that much

Neiman for example was a person that truly believed in that mentality, he wanted to be great, and he thought this was the best way for him to reach that goal, which led him for him to actually be able to endure fletcher's training

Now, I personally see two problems with this philosohpy

1- It really doesn't guarantee greatness at all
2- You ruin your life in the process

About the first point, fletcher believes that as long as you obtain enough technical skill you will raise to the top, that as long as you're good enough at playing the drums you will rise up into one of the best of all time. This doesn't really work that way

Technical skill isn't enough to carry you, you also need to know how to actually write songs, to create art, you also need some more finnancial skills like know how to market yourself and know which deals are good for you. If you're the best drummer ever but can only produce soulless songs, then it's all wasted potential, and honestly the more artistic side of things, I feel it's important to have a lower stress environment for them to flourish

The second point is somehow harder to argue against, we all know that neiman is going to die before they reach 30, probably due to suicide, drug overdose, or something along those lines, however, they don't give a shit, they even acknowledge that in the film, they consider dying early and being remembered in the history books a better outcome that dying at old age and not being remembered long term

I don't agree with this but honestly I don't have a strong point on why, I just think you got to be a little bit selfish with life, I don't want to people to praise me after i'm dead, if anything, I want people to praise me while i'm alive, you being influential can help other people, but not so much yourself in this circumstance

In the end of the movie we get confirmation, neiman did make it, he became a famous and well respected drummer, but we're meant to ask ourselves at what cost

The general philosophy of fletcher and neiman is honestly pretty similar to what we see online nowdays of hustle culture/sigma male stuff. The dream that if you just work hard enough you can make a gazillion dollars, it's a pretty dream to believe in, even before all of this, we had the american dream, that kinda played on the same ideas, but the sooner we realize we're not living in a meritocracy, the better

another aspect of the movie I would like to point out is how neiman behaviour directly makes the lives of people around them worse. He leaves his girlfriend, gets on bad terms with their family, they basically ruin all the social relationships in the life. This isn't a onesided action, his girlfriend truly did love him, that breakup is worse for her than it is for him. Everyone that loved him at any point of their life are basically having to deal with those relationships breaking off, he becomes an awful human being in the process of becoming good at drums

so yeah, peak movie, easy S rank

(in fairness, unfortunately im not sure i have anything i can suggest either, despite lots of things being meaningful to me. i dont really play anything myself, i always always watch other people play and i develop personal relationships to things through that and the fandom. either that or anything i watch/read is typically immediately 95% forgotten from my mind, so it's barely useful unless i've just recently seen/read it. like what can i really ask anyone to look at if i don't even understand what i've seen because im garbage at memory-and-attention-and-logic requisites for media literacy)

Depending on the characters you interact with, you find more about the town and its inner workings, as well as characters. It isn't as much of a narative as a traditional game, but I think it is more interesting.

I don't really know, I have like 100+ hours into stardew valley and I don't really agree with this, it doesn't have a plot or whatever, sure you can probably make a game theory video with certain lines of dialogues or whatever, but that's really not the point, the point of stardew valley is for you to have a cool farm feel relaxed and that's about it

Correct. The main point is mostly to feel relaxed and whatnot and it has next to no plot. I feel like the game has mini stories set in the same environment, not really a big, overarching story.

Phantom requiem for the phantom

it was good

it's a mafia/crime drama anime about this guy who loses all their memories and is tasked to go kill people, the plot is pretty interesting. The anime has this idea that for a normal, non-mentally ill person to kill, in a way they must forsake their own humanity, for example, the protagonist initially would not kill if it wasn't for the lost of memory, is the fact that they don't feel like a human that allows him to take the life of another human

in a later scene in the anime, they are able to recover their memories, but again, they decide to abandon that life and continue their life as a hitman, still, the fact that they recovered their memories kinda allowed them to "defy" the organization they were working for

later on the story, the protagonist wins a disciple, kinda repeating the story but from a different point of view, which humanizes the characters more, sometimes you see the same scenes with the protagonist previously being the trainee and now the actual boss

also, this anime has a surprising ammount to say about gun control, which wasn't something I expected to see, making multiple scenes referencing how guns are banned in japan but not in the US and a couple lines of dialogues which are basically "Guns can't be used to protect other people, only to cause harm"

In that same vein there are multiple scenes talking about how guns themselves are hard to use properly, when he first gets a trainee, he teaches them how to use a gun, he leaves the disciple train for their own for a little bit, and when they got confident in their skills, the protagonist kinda just walks in and basically says "you're doing it wrong"

so yeah, the anime is pretty good, however I didn't find it the most engaging, so I will bne placing it in C tier

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan wars:

0/10 got scammed originally read the title as the BALKAN wars and not BELKAN

anyways, this is a jet fighting game sponsored by the american military-industrial complex, like, really, lockheed martin and northropp grumman logos are in the opening screen of the game.

The game story is focused on the story of this legendary war hero, who was a mercenary that took down a lot of planes and made great advancements towards peace and shit. The actual story is told in a very RTS format, like really, it felt REALLY similar to something like Command & Conquer. You have individual missions with different objectives, in which you get a cutscene, maybe involving live action footage explaining the context, then you go to a mission overview in a really cool UI and then you play the mission

I'm a big sucker for RTS and especially RTS campaigns, they always feel so memorable to me. Although, the RTS genre is basically dead because of the success of starcraft 2. Instead of making cool narrative games with killer campaigns like warcraft 3, they tried focusing on e-sports, and since no game has been able to replicate starcraft 2, the genre has died. So i'm REALLY happy to see something that has the same energy and creates the same emotional response for me

Now, the actual campaign has some problems, first of all, it has no tutorial. Ace combat is a game with a very franchised and established playerbase, and this game is one of the most hardcore games in the franchise, so for them it's fine to not have a tutorial, but for me, the first hour was just me trying to figure out how to fly the plane and shoot, and honestly, it wasn't until halfway through the game I learnt how to use the special weapons. That was not a good experience.

Secondly, the game balance. There are three types of mission this game. air to air, air to ground, and the two of them combined, sometimes they let you choose, the problem with this, is that with the exception of the penultimate mission, air to ground is WAY easier, it's a night and day difference, so basically the difficulty curve of the game fluctuates depending if it's air to air or air to ground, and whenever you have to choose, you would have to be insane to pick something that is not air to ground. You don't really get more rewards for picking the harder mission, and even from a narrative point of view, it doesn't make sense to pick the harder mission. You're a soldier, you can die at any moments, have your allies have died already, why the fuck would you risk your own life even more in purpouse?

Also, related to the previous problem, the mission objectives don't feel varied enough, some missions are exactly the same as the other one but in a different environment, with the only exception of the penultimate mission (which also is, in my opinion, the best mission of the game!), so yeah, no culling of stratholme for you

The next problem runs a bit deeper, and that is the morality system. There are civilians and things that don't pose a thread in this game, they are shown in a different color in a radar. These are never essential objectives, and you can spare them. At the end of each mission a bar fills up with 3 areas, which determine if you're sparing civilians, if you're murdering them, or if you're in between, this affects some of the dialogue, some unlocks (this isn't really clear tho, I only discovered it affected unlock until now that I just googled it LMAO), and what enemies appear in the next mission, not the actual mission objectives, just some specific enemies

Thing is, I don't really feel it's very polished, there really won't be much differences if you kill everyone, in fact, some missions can become significantly easier if you do it, since some missions are based on score, and killing civilians give score, choosing not to kill civilians reduces the number of targets and sometimes force you to fight harder targets, and if you kill civilians in a mission that isn't score based, you still get more credits. With the game being sponsored by the american military-industrial complex (making it in a way political propaganda) and the story being about a cool war hero, yeah, I don't know what they want me to think about their stance on nuking civilians

However, even with all of these flaws, the game was fun, the actual core gameplay was solid, flying the plane was fun and engaging, and the actual story, even if I disagree with some of the messaging and with it being quite simple, was still interesting. I see a LOT of potential in this franchise, I don't really know (or really think), that there is any other ace combat that really fixes those problems, but if you just fixed those problems, and made a campaign that is more similar to warcraft 3 in terms of actual mission objectives and storytelling, it could be one of my favourite games of all time. The RTS genre may not revive, but this will do. I really hope this franchise keeps getting support and that ace combat 8 is a banger videogame, because I will very likely be playing it.

I forgot Ace Combat games are not easy for new players .

If you like the story and lore the other games of the main series all take place in the same universe sometimes reference events from past games (it's fun to spot them).

The morality system is only in Zero, it only matters if you want to see all possible cutscenes tbh.

Also it's not really sponsored by weapons manufacturers, they just have their logo because they allowed (or licensed idk) use of real plane models in the game (there's the same thing with Gran Turismo and other car games).

I would have suggested 3 because it's my favourite but the controls are very outdated (can't go up/down and left/right at the same time lol) and the only way to play it is to patch the jp version so it's not really the best to start with. It has a kinda convoluted story branching thing going on depending on your choices and things you do during missions (there's 5 "endings" but they all complete each other so basically you only get the full story by playing them all).

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

this may be one of my most "unpopular" opinions, I do NOT like FMA, i've seen both the anime (brotherhood) and the manga

in the FMA world there exist alchemy, you can tranmutate everything into something that has the same value, and well, they tried to transmutate a human being, but that didn't work because human beings are invaluable beings, and the plot is them trying to recover their body

The actual plot has a lot of political undertones, mainly with religion, however, I feel there isn't much nuance to the takes FMA gives on religion, it mostly falls on the typical "churches use it to manipulate people" (This is most apparent in the chapter 1 of the non brotherhood version), but it really doesn't go deep enough, it doesn't really factor the social elements that would led to people believing in religion, this may seem like a petty complain, but it really makes it feel superficial criticism to me

Now, it also talks about the military, which again, they do pretty bad shit, but I don't feel there isn't anything substantial in there

the concept of alchemist is good and interesting, but I do think other animes since then has used it in WAY more intersting ways, first example that comes to mind is the second season of made in abyss, the concept of value is basically the same as alchemy, however, I feel that in those 13 episodes they do a lot more interesting shit than in the 64 of FMA

however, the single element that I hate the MOST of FMA, is the concept of a philosophers stone, it's a item that you can use in alchemy to do impossible transmutions, like, human transmution, this is possible because the philosophers stone is fabricated by taking the life of someone alive, in various point of the anime, the two brothers obtain a philosopher stone, which would basically mean the end of the anime. BUT, instead of using it, they decide to discard the stone because they cant possibly use something that someone was killed in order to create

This is fucking idiotic, the HUMAN SOUL is already IN THE STONE, you cant get the soul out of the stone, so USE IT. If you use it for a good cause, at least they can be avenged by helping someone, by discarding the stone and not using it, you're making the sacrifice of the dude for NOTHING, you're so morally white that you're actually just the most stupid being on earth

also, this anime is mainly action, and I don't think the action scenes really contribute much other than them being fluff?, I just don't vibe with it

placed in C tier because it's better than the shit in D rank LMAO

Deus Ex (dropped)

The first hour of so of this game was playing the tutorial, realize the game didn't run properly and fix it, the next hour was actually pretty fun, the next couple hours however, I just can't get into it

I like the idea of the game, a more open RPG with shooting and stuff, the story semed cool too, my problem is that the gameplay just feels so, SO awful to play. The game heavily incentivices a stealth playstyle, and while I enjoy metal gear solid, I just can't get into stealth in most games, for me it feels boring, not really engaging, and just one of the worst gameplay genres you can have. The second option is to just go kill people, but that brings with it some problems of it's own, as the game doesn't really want you to play like that, something like shooting takes a solid seconds before you can have a somewhat accurately aim

The game is an old shooter, so it has the quicksave type gameplay, however, unlike a game like half-life, it's VERY easy to basically get your save softlocked. Since there are barely any health recovery, and the ammo economy is punishing as fuck, it's easy to get yourself into a position where you don't really have the resources to keep pushing, so you would have to reload an even older save, lose a lot of progress, do it all again, reloading on every hit because you can't afford to get damaged, and it's just so frustrating and slow and I want to rip my skin out

It got so bad, that at some points I straight up activated cheats and healed/activated godmode since I just couldn't bother doing it properly, but, after a while, I realized I wasn't having much fun so i'm dropping it

Girls last tour

more like, girls PEAK tour am I right

I just want to say, i'm HEAVILY biased towards this anime/manga, it's been in my favourite for a long time, i've interacted with the fandom, and i've kinda formed my tastes and in part personality around it, so yeah, don't expect me to be neutral or objective

Girls last tour it's a post apocalyptic philosophical slice of life anime created by our lord and saviour tsukumizu yuu. First of all, even if it's post apocalyptic there isn't any action, or danger in the traditional sense, this is not mad max, the post-apocalyptic setting just provides a setting where tkmiz can discuss the shit he wants to discuss

Our two main protagonists, yuuri and chito have grown up after the apocalypse, so they have no real idea how the human society operated, a lot of the anime plays with the both of them rediscovering human artifacts and trying to interpret them

The first episode of this anime really defines the tone of the rest of the show and sets you in the right mindset. TLDR, they find rations, and yuuri pulls up her gun to chito in order to keep all the rations, however, this isn't really a tense scene, but more playful banter

while chito and yuuri are in a very dangerous situation all the time, they don't really feel like it, for them, the concept of them being the last humans on earth is an accepted fact, they know that at some point, probably earlier than later, they will die. Of course that doesn't mean that they're totally careless, they still have fears and things like every other human does, but for them, the apocalypse is their daily life, and they have normalized like we do our daily lives

Tkmiz as a writer has a very absurdist philosophy, they aren't really negative or pessimistic in any way. I don't have studies in philosophy, but my interpretation of tkmiz works is along the lines that no single object in our human society has inherent value, all value is produced by human beings, and our thoughts of what has value are created by our environment. Nothing has value by itself, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to give our own meaning to life, to fill that void with love, with art, with competition, with anything that makes you really feel alive

An example of this would be the episode about "paradise". At the start of the episode, chito and yuuri find some hot springs, and they decide to bathe in it, this is great. Chito knows how to read and has read some books in the past, so she has picked up some vocabulary, she describes the bath as "paradise", yuuri agrees with it, later on the episode, they find a sanctuary dedicated to a god, which is supposed to be a religious, mortal sanctuary, however, while chito understands the origin and explains it to yuuri, neither of them really get the idea, then, they start talking about the actual meaning of the word paradise, which they define as a holy land. However, they admit that they prefer their own paradise (the hot spring).

On our current society, it doesn't make much sense to put the hot springs over the important religious monument, but by itself, there isn't anything that makes our interpretation more valid than their interpretation, it's just that we live in a culture where we define paradise as the religious temple, not the hot spring. our ancestral origins and belief system have made our society consider the religious temple more important, but they are in a different circumstance, their environment is different, they live in a situation that no human being so far has ever found themselves in, and it just so happens that in that world, the hot spring IS paradise.

Although, my personal favourite episode from the anime is the episode where chito and yuuri dream of owning a house. They find some old ruins o a house, and they just daydream what would it be to live in there and what would they want to have in their house, this episode is GOOD

first of all, kinda similar to the previous episode I talked about, they often make some pretty weird choices for furniture they would want, or even romantice certain pieces of furniture like bookshelves, this really shows how culture and our environment affects how we perceive the world and how we decide to run our lives, their necessities are different to ours, and their life experiences are different, so what they want is going to be different to what we want

This episode also touches the concept of value, again, chito wishes for a bookshelf, however, she doesn't really know how to fabricate one or where do they come from, we know that you can easily make a bookshelves with a bit of wood, but she doesn't, and still, she perceives wood as way more valuable than we do. She sees bookshelves as another artifact of human history, she really can't tell what is more valuable, a bookshelf, or an empty book, so due to her lack of knowledge and experience, she perceives the bookshelf as WAY more legendary than it is, to like royalty level shit

The episode also does really good at showing the relationship and dynamic between the two protagonist, they imagine them living together, which in our current society has certain implications that in their world they really don't. That type of activity, the designing your dream house with someone, is often an activity reserved for you and the person you love, it implies a romantic relationship, but again, lack of cultural context makes chito and yuuri not perceive it that way, and we as an audience perceive and understand it

It's not clear if thre is any sort of romantic feelings between chito and yuuri, however, if we look at it from more a meta perspective, something very interesting comes up. Let's reverse that scenario, and say chito was a man. Would we as an audience still have seen that scene and understood that there weren't any romantic feelings necessarily involved?, honestly, a lot of people may have understood it, but it would have been a smaller %

At the end of the day, for as much as tkmiz tries to frame certain things from this more culturally removed perspective, the actual anime still exists in a society where cultural context and previous knowledge exist, when we watch something, we subconsciously kinda considerate what the intention of the author was, and it just so happens that, for the same scene if chito and yuuri are a man and a woman, romantic feelings are more implied, and if they're both women or men, they aren't as implied.

Girls Last Tour NEEDS for both of their characters to be the same gender because in our handbook of media interpretation we perceive male/female couples different to homosexual ones, and it just so happens that the female/female pairing is the one that communicates the message better

In fact, there are a bunch of tweets by tkmiz that kinda confirms this:

Tsukumizu Yuu wrote:

>It often seems to me that sexual desire is the very essence of what it means to 'live', but that's too depressing so I become compelled to deny sexual desire completely. However, if I do that only values like 'nothingness' and 'death' remain, so I'm troubled.

>It is depressing to be afflicted by an emotion like 'lust' when I don't have any intention to do something like having kids.

>For people who revere homosexual love in media, I personally think it could be seen as a form of compromise or reconciliation of that dilemma.

>A work like 'Last Tour' featuring a male-female pair seems like it'd become incredibly irritating. 'What, are they Adam and Eve?', you'd think.

>In Ekuni Kaori's short story 'Sultry Night', a lesbian couple comments "There's nowhere left for us to go after this, huh? We're at a dead end." while holding hands, singing, drinking beer and walking through a town at night. I liked it very much.
Now, moving onto the art, this is something that doesn't really translate to the anime adaptation sadly, so I will mostly be talking about the manga

First of all, what does it mean for something to have good art?The most simple answer is well, the actual panels are well drawn, but honestly, I've read a lot, and for me what differentiates manga with good art from those that don't is the actual framing. It's not enough to know how to draw well, you must create circumstances in the story where the art is impactful, where you can dedicate an entire page just to a single drawing, good art is the one that sticks in your head, and for that, it needs to feel striking. Tkmiz does this very well, GLT is very focused around the world, so they just have big panels just showing stuff

Another thing I really like about tkmiz art is their paneling, it's not just about making panels that look good, the way you arrange tha patterns, and the actual background of the page where the panels are printed on are important. If we see in old manga, for example osama tezuka phoenix, you can see that the actual panel structure repeats over, and over, and over. Old mangakas just kinda followed a blueprint and then created a story with that, the panels felt rigid and paneling wasn't the most important

however, with time, mangas have started to care about the paneling a lot more, a work like GLT makes sure it's paneling helps the narrative of the story as well as being visually pleasing, this is something that would be pushed way further with their next work, shimeji simulation, but GLT already had really nice showings of this.

There are some drawings that straight up break out of their original panel, like this one

This was a trend tkmiz kinda helped to create and popularize, and in fact, a lot of modern mangas take this lessons and push them even further, a modern example of this (without counting shimeji simulation) would be witch hat atelier

Honestly, I haven't even talked about the ending or the sound design or how the adaptation didn't cover the entire manga and what that has to say about girls last tour and the anime industry but it's been like an hour and 15 minutes and I should go to sleep soon and this is also nearing the 2000 word mark but just so you know I could write another 2000 words on this

So yeah, girls last tour is GOOD, S rank.

Your Lie In April

this is a tragic romance anime like I wanna eat your pancreas and others, I actually got the ending of this anime spoiled 3 years ago, at the time I didn't mind it since I assumed that whenever I were going to actually watch this anime I would have forgotten about it like I've done for many other spoilers, but that didn't happen, since for some reason that is a core memory now, still, that didn't affect my enjoyement of the anime much

like, this anime is all about the process, you know what you're getting into, even if not, you can make an idea of what's happening, the foreshadowing in this anime is very obvious, but it's the actual implications, consequences, and process that makes it great

this anime is about a guy who played the piano who stopped playing the piano after his abusive mother died and then he meets a girl that gets them to play the piano again. Like many other animes, this relies entirerily on feeling rather than having a smart plot or en extremely deep message or whatever, which it nails

the actual situation the protagonist finds themselves in at the start of the anime is actually really pretty complex and hard but while this is a very extreme situation, I think it can be extrapolated to real life situations you may have lived, and I think the way they depict this is really good, since a lot of people IRL seems to miss the point

the protagonist didn't really have friends since childhood, they never really developed social skills or a social circle, he only knew how to do one thing and that was to play the piano really fucking well, since her mother forced him to practice and play the piano, he played following the actual sheet music very closely, however, once her mother passes away and he loses the reason to play the piano, he's really left with nothing

This isn't really about moving on, the actual trauma isn't the point of the anime in my opinion, but the acutal act of restarting your life. It's easy to say "oh just try to talk to people and get other hobbies" but it really isn't that easy, this is not really something they know how to do, they don't have any experience doing any of those things, plus, they don't really have the contacts needed to actually meet new people or try new things

it's even worse, since everyone who shared the same hobby of playing the piano already knew them and in some sort of way disliked them or had a shaky relationship with them

He really can't play the piano anymore, not because truma, but because he had no reason to do so. He only played following his mother instructions and only to win contest, he had no real artistic intention or free will during the act of playing music, so whenever he's free to do whatever the fuck he wants, he doesn't really have any reason to really play

... but again, playing music is the only thing he knows how to do, and it's not like he can just try new things, so he kinda does piano adjacent things. The only way for him to break that cycle is for their friends and people close to them to try to steer his life in a different direction, to give him a push

they introduced him to new people, he even fell in love, and it was this change of pace that allowed him to break free, he now had new objectives in life, he had the motivation to actually go through and do certain things, he was able to start playing the piano again

In the end of the anime, when the girl dies, it isn't as catastrophic as when his mother died, yeah, he was closer to his crush than to his mother, but now he has actually lived through many experiences he was lacking, he had gained life knowledge and experiences, he's no longer stuck in a weird limbo like earlier, he doesn't need to restart life once again, yeah, it's difficult and shocking at whatever, but he now knows how to keep pushing, how to keep living

so yeah, try to be a nice person and if you think or know a friend who could benefit from a little push, please do it

Blade runner:

this one is kinda weird to talk about, I thought it was fine, I feel most of the appeal of this movie is like creating/defining/popularizing the cyberpunk genre here in the west, but I feel that with time blade runner isn't as noble or original anymore, so idk

Blade runner has a plot, but it's not really the focus?, it has a couple interesting concepts, mainly the idea of replicants. Robots that act exactly like humans an even have memories like humans, thing is that replicants just by existing put into question the identity of everyone on earth, you could be a repicant and not know it, even if you remember taking a test and knowing that you're not a replicant... what if someone implanted those memories into you?, there is no real way to know, and while this topic is explored, I don't think it goes deep enough

the main appeal of blade runner is the actual world building, defined cyberpunk as this hyper capitalistic/hyper sexual distopia, but it doesn't really explain why the world is the way that it is, other cyberpunk media like akira for example are fairly grounded in their assumptions of the future, however, blade runner implies a world where technology skyrocketed in power but that our human ethics and social issues have been ignored since the date of making the movie, maybe even reversed a little bit

I don't really like this, in most cyberpunk films (including modern blade runner), like with science fiction, you can imagine how society transitioned between our current state and the state depitced in said work, if you watch akira or ghost in the shell you get how things got that way, in fact, this genre uses that idea to make comments in our current society and world, but blade runner feels more like pure negligence from the global population which seems kinda weird

yes it defined the cyberpunk genre, but it has been the task of future cyberpunk films to recontextualize and give meaning to the world of blade runner

Gosick:

more like, it makes me SICK of how bad it is haha got it, anyways, yeah, this was very bad.

Gosick is a mistery anime about this guy who meets this super smart girl on the school library and then starts debunking urban legends, not too different than something like hyuouka, just in a historical setting

For the first half of the anime, every chapter basically has a different mistery to solve, thing is, unlike a lot of other mistery animes, you're not supposed to be able to solve the mistery by itself

They don't present you all the clues, then give you time to breathe and think, and then unvail the mistery like a sherlock holmes novel, but instead, a mistery is presented, the guy goes like "what's going onnnnnnn" and then the girls goes and solves it in the most assholy and smug way possible

to put an example, in episode 3 I think, they're in a pretty involved mistery, then the girl literally laughs on the face of a guy being scared and horrified after witnessing the death and basically suicide of a lot of people going like "lollllllllllllllllllllllllll how have you not solved it yet are you stupiddddddddddd", and then goes like, you see that bottle over there?, where, I just happened to know that brand I know it's fake which then leds me to x and y

You, as an audicence, had ABSOLUTELY no way to know about that brand since that information was NOT presented to you as a viewer, there is no mistery to solve for you, you're just meant to sit there and look how this asshole girl resolves everything

Not only that, but their explanation often have holes and relies on certain assumptions, nothing she claims or theorizes is confirmed at 100%, yet, she NEVER makes a mistake, she is always rewarded by the script, the only point in the anime where she can't solve a mistery, it is because it's unsolvable by anyone on planet earth

Thing is, that the mistery aspect is not really the point of the anime, it's the romance that forms between the guy and the girl, but in my opinion, it just doesn't really fit with the rest of the anime, it's not a particullary deep romance, and it kinda boils down to "omg he looked at me i'm going to blush but then i'm going to deny anything has happened because i'm a tsundere like that", also again, the girl is unlikeable as fuck so like why the fuck would I root for her and her romance like fuck off

Pintu Terlarang (AKA: The Forbidden Door)

I'm sorry but this was ass

same director asJoko ANwar's Nightmares and Daydreams. It's a horror movie about pregnant statues and erectal dysfunction (not actually), it's just that the plot is a fucking mess, it's really hard to follow and many things doesn't really make much sense

that is mainly due to the pretty mediocre acting and specially the overdramatization of many scenes, there are a lot of moments where nothing out of the ordinary has happened but then tense music starts playing and the guy starts saying cryptic things

The end of the movie is also pretty bad, as it feels a lot of scenes are there mainly to them being shocking and they're WAY longer than they needed to be

Also, the start of the movie instead of being mysterious or whatever it's accidently really funny, which sets the tone wrong for the rest of the movie, the guy trying to sell the protagonist the statue and goes like "you know it could be your mother with your brother" and it was like "oh that's cool, anyways my brother KILLED my mother" and the guy just looks at him like holy fuck i'm so unlucky trying to sell this thing

anyways, the rest of the movie is extremely boring, placed in D tier

Lord of the rings

rewatch, honestly enjoyed it less than the first time?, it's still good but, eh

Lord of the rings is an incredibly influential work of fiction, since it basically created all the fantasy races that D&D would later adapt that would later become the typical fantasy setting for videogames, anime, and also more literature, surprisingly not that many movies tho

the actual story works, it's simple but good, however I have some nitpicks with it, maybe it was because I watched the most extended versions of each movie, but the pacing felt a little bit off, like the first movie is so packed with iconic scenes and plot points, while the later ones are mainly focused on one or two battles, which I don't think are as exciting as gandalf holding the bridge or whatever

Another thing that I don't really get from lord of the rings is the languages, there are a lot of different languages but the only one that really has prevelence in the movie is elvish, which is just there to add fluff to the movie, while the rest of races, hobbits, dwarves, humans, etc, seem to not have much problem communicating

and like blade runner, while it did create like half the genre, it doesn't really do a deep exploration into those themes, (but again, it's my fault for expecting a more drama focused/slice of life/psychological thing rather than them beating each other up for like 6 hours in a row) it will only be with works that were inspired by tolken literature that we will see stuff like exploration of the concept of the different lifespans of fantasy species

In addition to watching the lord of the rings movie, I watched the older, animated lord of the rings movie, and man, it's wild

it's probably one of the most visually insane movies due to it being entirerily rotoscoped, the tone is a lot sillier, closer to a robin hood theater play than this hyper serious tense epic fantasy style that the movies aim for, a lot of the plot doesn't make much sense, but honestly, it was a very enjoyable watch, I really think it's a good movie

Another thing that I don't really get from lord of the rings is the languages, there are a lot of different languages but the only one that really has prevelence in the movie is elvish, which is just there to add fluff to the movie, while the rest of races, hobbits, dwarves, humans, etc, seem to not have much problem communicating

next: girls band cry
if you haven't read the books I'd definitely recommend them

elvish is so prevalent in the movies versus other languages because of how deeply tolkien developed those languages himself. he mentioned at some point that the series started primarily due to his creation of the languages. native languages for dwarves and hobbits aren't nearly as developed as quenya is, and people have been trying to continue developing them since he died. elvish dot org lmao

suit yourself lol, they can be a bit flowery and overly long at some points but they're pretty great otherwise
if you do feel like reading some tolkien stuff in the future but want something more "contained" maybe just read the hobbit. every time that novel has been adapted to film it's gone pretty badly

Girls Band Cry

This anime did not hook me

it's your typical girls starting a band and then growing as a person because of it, it's anime original. This is a bit different than most music anime, because if you were to watch things like beck or nana, you would notice a lack of actual music in the anime, because, well, the point is more the drama and the subcultures of different music genres, not as much the songs that they play themselves. Also, given that they're all mainly based on mangas, it's hard to write songs in there (Except 20th century boys which isn't even a music manga yet somehow the mangaka wrote the song himself and put it in the manga which is honestly just so fucking cool), another reason why they don't really include songs is because if you're writing a story about the protagonist making the coolest and greatest song ever, if you can't compose something that matches that level, the plot falls short (in 20th century boys they say kenji is awful at singing)

instead, in girls band cry the drama is more secondary, it isn't anything groundbreaking, everything that it does has already done in the past (and better IMO) but instead it mainly focuses on the actual songs and the animation, thing is, the songs are fine, but they're not something I would add to my playlist or whatever

The animation is full 3d CGI, I liked this in kemono friends, I think it worked, but the early episodes of girl band cry are a bit worse than the kemono friends CGI, my problem lies more with the 3d models being out of place with the 2d backgrounds, but that is something they improved in the later episodes

The actual plot is a little bit messy for me?, it tries to cover most of the plotlines and catch up with the lives of everyone on the band and that's not a style I like very much, I prefeer animes with less ammount of characters but more fleshed out

so yeah, it's not something I enjoyed that much

jesus christ superstar

shoutout to accidental comedy

Biblical media is something weird, specifically american biblical media since they feel like they have the obligation to make their movies and games "educative" and "productive", so they often retell events from the bible or try to push christian values in a not very subtle way, not really going into the nuances of those values

jesus christ superstar is all of that, it's a retelling of the last days of jesus, but making it "hip" for the youth, which turns out to be really fucking funny, the story is exactly what you think, but I had a fun time, I think everyone dancing around jesus while he doesn't give a fuck

they also care surprisingly little about accuracy, like no biblical representation would hire that jduas lmao, I don't think this musical is good by itself, more so ironically, but idk

The songs aren't as catchy either but eh, I'm glad that this exists
