Mob Psycho 100 (all 3 seasons)

Coming of age anime mixed with a shounen.

Mob Psycho 100 is about a guy who is really dumb and also has super cool psychic powers and works in an agency of exorcism under a boss who doesn't have psychic powers but he has a lot of charisma so he convinces everyone that he does.

This anime is made by the same creator of one punch man, but unlike one punch man, this never derails into an actual serious anime, this stays mostly as a gag shounen all the way through, and that is good.

There really isn't much that this anime does that other anime doesn't, it's all pretty standard, the only thing that I could really point out is the meter that fills up over episodes, which builds up hype for the season finale

I enjoyed it

American movie about cars because yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh carts sport america yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (jk)

In all seriousness, this movie isn't really particullary ambitious or anything, it's a movie made to be enjoyable, to profit on a certain audience (nascar fans), and maybe give a little information on the origin of a certain series of racecars

It has a tried and true structure, it has a lot of drama however none of it is particullary high stakes or too stressful to the viewer, the cinematography and sounds deisgn is good, you can really hear the engines of the cars and stuff, and the entire final race is honestly coreographed like it was the final fight scene of another movie

This format kinda guarantees the movie will be good (as long as they don't fumble the execution, which they didn't do), but it also creates a glass ceiling, it's enjoyable, but unless you're REALLY into the topic at hand beforehand, no one is really going to consider it their favourite movie, it's just a very safe movie in all fronts

Lisa: The Painful

I'm mixed about this game

for context, I had a lot of people talk to me about lisa over the years, more now these last few days since it became free on epic. I initiall tried playing when I was 12 but bounced away from it for obvious reasons

I ended up enjoying the game, but man, I do think this game a couple of MASSIVE flaws, the story and theme are fine, my problems are on the level design and the combat

My problem with the game can be summarized in a single moment. I was in a cave, I reach the end of the cave, the exit is blocked, I'm halfway through the game, I remember a moment like this before in the game where I exited the cave and I got ambushed. I was like, not this time, I open my inventory, I search for the quick travel item, and... it isn't there. No narrative reason, no warning, not consistent with the rest of the game. I exit the cave, I get ambushed, next scene I look at my inventory, the quick travel item has reappeared.

There are a lot of situations on the game where you know something is going to happen, you have a way to avoid it, but the game just REFUSES to let you do it. And whenever that is tied to a serious story moment, it just devalues the emotional impact of that moment. If my character is forced to do something awful, I want that action to feel like the only option, to be morally grey, not seeing a way I can avoid it, for the game to limit me to take the awful action. That just felt dumb

Some story options ended up also felt like a bit of a scam. In two parts of the game you're faced with losing party members or an arm. I chose to lose party memebers both times. However, with time I realized that what I did was pointless since all the OP skills DIDN'T require of any arms, so I was like, this was objectively the wrong choice, which sucked ass

Another thing that annoyed me is the fact that there are illusory walls with often no indication, I was literally crashing into every wall to see if it was fake or not, and some of them were, but damn, it was annoying.

The combat is too RNG heavy, some enemies have just instakill attacks that if they use you basically lose the fight and have to restart, so you just have to pray they don't use it. The fact that XP cant overflow into the next level is one of the worst videogame mechanics I've seen ever

However, even with all of those problems, the game is still really original at times, and it's still enjoyable, so placed in B tier

why the fuck are you obsessed with this (+ the lisa thing I actually wrote it in spanish first to send it to someone on discord)

you absolute BAFOON, I have ALREADY read jojos bizarre adventure (up to part 7, haven't read 8 and 9 yet)

it's pretty mid

Starting off with part 1, it's just pretty bad, the art is extremely rough, the story is basically nosense and just an excuse for the protagonist to fight, and it really doesn't do anything better to other works in the genre

Part 2 is a clear improvement from part 1, and has what probably is one of the best plots in jojos, however it is quite generic and not the most interesting. However, even in the colored version, the art is rough, I can't really say any stand-out panels

Part 3 is one of my personal favourites, the start is pretty bad, but it is probably the part of jojos that specs into comedy the hardest, this is also where they introduce stands, which are basically super cool powers that have humanoid form, and they really take advantage of it here. The stands in this part works to subvert your expectatives of the story. You assume the only thing the stand is going to do is just fight, however, they show how those powers can be applied to other tasks during the gambling arc. The art is still not great (and to get it out of the way, no part of jojos has particullary good art). The end fight is fuckign amazing, dio from part 1 being the end enemy for the part is just really fucking cool. They're also very overpowered, so again, they use the stands in smart and clever ways to defeat dio

Part 4: heyyyyyyyyyyyyy remember all of what I said about using the stands in cool ways?, well you cant forget about that buecause during the part 4, 5, 6 they're just really cool powers and that's about it. This part has no plot, no stakes, it's basically the yuru camp of shouens, they just fight and showcase stands, I dislike this part

Part 5: This is basically part 4, I have nothing really to add to this other than the setting was cool

Part 6: This really illustrates my problem with jojos. It's just pure fanservice in the form of stands. By this point, the stands have become so core to the ADN of jojos that it seems that it's the only thing that is really getting any attention, the characters in this part are the weakest in terms of writing. The stands are the only thing that matters, and that is, because for these last 3 parts, is what the community enjoyed the most out of jojos, the comedy aspect is worse than in part 3 because it's trying to focus more on the fights, and given the sheer quantity of stands introduced in these parts, all of them have a lot less screentime and less interesting applications

This part is also the jojos part with the most fanservice, it's sort of a "EVERYONE IS BACK!" type of part, which fucking sucks IMO. This part tries nothing new, and it's just everything wrong with jojos

Part 7: this one is good. The setting of a race is both very original and fits in very well with jojos. It isn't the most developed story, as it's more focused on the fights, but it gives a quite clear direction for the manga. It isn't very stand-focused and it's more character-focused, having probably some of the best written characters in jojos. This part is both the riskiest jojo part and it worked, therefore making it the best part of jojos

Still, while it's the best part of jojos, I don't think there is much to praise about it outside of that. Other than having a very unexplored setting, I don't feel it's doing crazy shit, I don't think you're missing out on anything for not reading it.

EF: A tale of memories

mid

This anime premsie is a romance between a regular guy and this girl that only has 13 hours of memory. The premise is pretty sick but tbh they don't do enough with it

The anime sets up a pretty interesting question, how important are memories in our lifes?, if you woke up tomorrow, with no memories, would you be the same person?, would your personality change?

Not only that, but this girl in the anime uses a diary to try to make an effort to remember her life. This is fucking AMAZING, with that you're opening the door to more cool shit like, what memories do you decide to maintain?, what memories do you let go?, how do you know the diary, and therefore, your memories (and therefore, your life) hasn't been tampered with?, if someone did you would have no way to know

This isn't the firs anime to try to tackle this concept, the yuri manga "Bloom Into You" actually has a story arc dedicated to this. In that story, there is a theater play, about a girl who wakes up with amnesia, she is very confused about everything, specially, who they are as a person. Shortly after the girl wakes up, different persons walk into her room and try to make her remember, her brother, her friends, her girlfriend, etc. However, they all give different descriptions of what person she was, although, they were all contradictory. She apparently had like 4 different personalities (here you have the concept of social masking and stuff), and she doesn't know who she was in reality. So she decides the only personality she can say for sure it was true, is the one she currently had. Deciding to forget her previous life and start over, not being tied down by her past, and doing things that she knows would be true to herself.

The way this anime responds those questions is by... not doing so. The anime isn't really interested in the process of how a life like this would play, as the condition isn't treated as a philosophical dillema, but as a moe element. The condition isn't used to make a cool story, but to make the girl look cute and defenseless.

This isn't the only romance in the anime either, we also have a b-plot and even a c-plot, and while they're all connected in the drama, they're not really connected by a thematical string. The ammount of characters really reduce the screentime each one recieves. You would think the second season helps on this, but not really, it just expands the story of some secondary characters (which honestly were my least liked characters in the anime...), and i'm sory, but none of them are as cool as the one that I described, which was the one used to actually sell the anime

All of this makes a lot more sense when you think about how this anime was sourced from a visual novel, more specifically, an eroge. The original game was basically a dating simulator, VN's and eroges were instrumental in creating what we know now as moe, so it makes sense that it would be like this, still, I do think there is wasted potential in this premise.

This anime was created by studio SHAFT, so that means, more experimental/ambitious in the art department. While shaft did get some pretty cool shots and scenes, they're used without rhyme or reason, the story doesn't take advantage of the art, it's just cool shots for the sake of having cool shots. I'm grateful the shots exist, but I can't think of it as something else than wasted potential

Even in other shaft anime, like madoka magica, shaft uses some wacky artstyle to really represent the world of madness madoka is trying to depict, nothing similar happens here

placed in C-tier, could have been cool but it really wasn't

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

snake wasn't canibalized 0/10 refunded the money I didn't pay for it

personally a slight step down from 2, the gameplay is still ass, probably even more ass, since they add a lot of mechanics that are very annoying but I guess it does help the game in a more narrative level, so I can excuse it

When metal gear solid 2 was released, there was a lot of controversy around it, what do you mean I can't play as snake???? what do you mean the protagonist is raiden????? raiden is a fucking loser,,,,,,,. Metal gear solid 3 feels like the sequel the fans wanted, so a lot of things are put in place to make snake look badass. You're not just sneaking around following a cool drama story. You're surviving on the jungle, eating whatever you can get your hand on, there are helicopters flying around you, you're the strongest on melee combat, you're a hero by all metrics

I think there is a pretty big difference between playing as snake and playing as raiden. When you're playing as raiden, you're a lot more analytical about the information you recieve. You know raiden is an unreliable narrator, that he's missing part of the story, and you that have more context on the game, know more than raiden. With snake the opposite is true, snake has never betrayed the player, therefore, when snakes says something, or trusts someones, we don't really suspect on that person as much, this allows the more simplistic story of MGS3 (simplistic when compared to 2), still feel really interesting. The story is way less convoluted and a lot more predictible than in 2, but by being framed as snake, we don't expect the twists as much.

In a way, snake is also made to be more relatable to the player. There is one character that is always half naked for some reason, so when snake shows interest in her, we're supposed to go "YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THAT'S MY MANNNNNNNNNNNNN", so when the story finishes, in a way, all of the criticism torwards snake, of how he was easily fooled by EVA, is a criticism to the player. You were distracted, you were so into the fantasy of being snake that you made mistakes. Metal Gear solid 3 makes us appreciate raiden.

also, the bossfight against boss is probably one of the most beautiful shots i've seen in a videogame, and whenever you defeat her and the petals of the flowers turn red, that's honestly peak

also I just want to say the pc port runs like fucking ass and i've had to reinstall the game multiple times to finish the game lmao

Placed in A tier, will play MGS4 and 5 In the future but I wont note them on this thread.

Lisa the joyful:

This is a expansion for lisa the painful which just happens to be a different game, but it is an expansion pack.

This game fixes a lot of the main problems I pointed out when I talked about lisa the painful, and that being the combat and the level design. There have been no moments in this game when I felt I outsmarted the game and it punished me for it. Ahd the combat is a lot more fun!, but not for the reason the developer intended

The previous game combat was pretty bad. The most optimal strat was just pretty boring and extremely frustrating. Some enemies in the game have A LOT of hp, and while you do level up, the damage doesn't scale that much, the main way of actually making more damage is by getting better skills/characters, however even this falls short in the endgame. However, status effects do damage based on a % of the maximum health the enemy has, so this was the most viable way to do damage. The enemies also had random instakill attacks, so the only real way to protect yourself was to permastun the enemy. The problem is, every status effect has a chance to fail and not land, a quite high one in fact. So yeah, the best way to play the game was to just spam status effect to make the enemy not attack and for yourself to do damage and just pray that they wouldn't fail. There was no danger state, the fights were always one-sided and it all depended on RNG (also, given that there is no healthbars, status effects are the only way to know the max HP of an enemy!)

Some may see this as a good thing, at the end of the day, the game is supposed to be unfair and frustrating, but I see this as the wrong way to accomplish that goal. The GOOD frustrating parts of the game are stuff like the random, game-changing decisions you have to do at random points at the game, the random ambushes that you can learn to predict, knowing that resting could be dangerous and planning ways around not resting, etc. All of that is frustrating but it requires more from the player than just a RNG check

Lisa the joyful has a way limited set of skills, the permastun strategy isn't really viable anymore, and the optimal strategy is considerably more fun. However, this seems like a side effect, as the way the developer tried to solve the combat was to add paper mario style minigames into it. This is something that kinda has become industry standard as a way to remedy turn based combat being "boring", which I just think fucking suck ass

The problems I see with standard turn based combat are the following (or why chained echoes has the best turn based combat ever designed):

-Grinding being the optimal way to play the videogame
-Balancing, make every skill useful and not have some which are just way better than the rest
-Being able to memorize a rotation of attacks that you can just spam, without much variation between fights

Being slow is not one of the problems, it adds to the tension. Lisa isn't an action game, you're supposed to stress out over every small decision, and minmax your way into avoiding awful situations, the combat being slow only improves that feeling. In fact, if you're full of adrenaline you wont really ever be in that state, which makes for a worse experience

Adding the minigame doesn't fix any of the problems, it's just copying what other successful games did without knowing WHY they did it. It's just a bad addition to the game. (I'm sorry game industry but instead of copying minigames you should be copying chained echoes, which has TWO different combat systems that completely solve this problem and are the best combat system ever designed, no one could fucking come up with anything and this game developed by A SINGLE PERSON just came in and solved it TWICE, chained echoes is so underrated man)

The ending of lisa the hopeful is also told in a way that is really fitting of the game, having this more psychological, abstract tone which fits the game beautifully

The only downgrade in this game is that it won't surprise you as much as the original. It doesn't bring that many new ideas onto the table, and due to the scope of the game being smaller, a lot of the best moments in lisa the painful aren't going to be present on the expansion, if you've already played lisa the painful, nothing that happens in lisa the joyfull will surprise you.

it can definitely still be enjoyed as a pdf, there are sections later in the book where having a physical book can provide more emotional intent for those sections (ie when a single sentence spans several pages, parts where there are "windows" of text that are reversed depending on which side of the page they're on) but it's not that big of a deal really when the rest of the text is so goddamn disorienting

I know of house of leaves, and I know you have to read it in a very concrete way. I have no way of getting myself a physical copy of house of leaves, and I would have to resort to finding a PDF somewhere, can the book still be enjoyed as a PDF or do you NEED to have the physical book?

it can definitely still be enjoyed as a pdf, there are sections later in the book where having a physical book can provide more emotional intent for those sections (ie when a single sentence spans several pages, parts where there are "windows" of text that are reversed depending on which side of the page they're on) but it's not that big of a deal really when the rest of the text is so goddamn disorienting
then I will read it

31 minutos: La pelicula

I have never seen 31 minutos, the tv show, this movie overall has a very basic plot, and it works as a way to add lore to the characters and also having a longer episode

31 minutos is an episodic TV show, so most viewers won't have watched the whole show before watching the newest episode. 31 minutos is also presented as a fakeout, you expect a more serious program and you end up with this light hearted parody comedy show

So, they cant just randomly reveal the backstory of a character in the middle of an episode and expect everyone to remember that going forward, because not that many people are watching ALL the episodes. So, they packeted all of that into a movie.

A movie is a WAY bigger deal that just a random episode, as long as you enjoyed a few episodes, you're going to be interested in the movie, so this is the best way to giving more depth to these characters, which wouldn't have much depth otherwise

Movie adaptations also works to give "validation" to the original work. Film is a respected medium and one that is largely considered to be art. Whenever you have something that is basically a shitpost, having a movie adaptation is a way to say that what you're doing is above a shitpost, that there is actual talent in the team and that you can break out of that sphere you're part of. This is also why a lot of youtubers has movies, most of them are bad, but them having an IMDB page makes what they do seem more professional and more worthy of respect

I personally don't agree with just giving movie adaptations to stuff that doesn't really need one, but their effects are undeniable

placed in d tier because I didn't enjoy the movie that much lmao

this is missinformation

anyways, my answer if I like to hate on stuff is not really, If I had the choice between being able to enjoy something or hating it, I would always choose to enjoy it. At the end of the day, it's better to have more things that you enjoy than less. However, I'm not a fan of forcing yourself to like something, or even the concept of conditioning yourself first to enjoy certain genres or pieces of media more, so if I dislike something, i'm going to be vocal about the fact that I dislike it

Gravity Falls (only seen season 1, probably wont watch the second one)

not bad, but a lot of the criticism I gave to over the garden wall also applies to this

This is a episodic kid friendly mistery TV show about a brother and a sister that spends their summer in a summer camp full of weird magical creatures

The premise isn't anything new, half of kids show take the format of a summer vacation, mainly becaause it plays into the fantasy children actually have, kids like summer vacation and making the protagonist not have any sort of responsability gives a lot of creative freedom

However, while this has a mistery setting, there really isn't any sort of mistery anywhere in the show, there is no ovearching plot and half of the chapters don't have a mistery to begin with, it's more about the vibe of watching amistery than actually watching one, however, (most of) the chapters aren't completely braindead like other shows such as steven universe.

I say most of beause there are some chapters which are very, very bad, and it all comes from this philosophy that everything must end how it started, the characters can't develop in any sort of way, so for example, in chapter 19, the penultimate chapter of the show, dipper acts in a way TOTALLY CONTRARY to how he acted the previous episode (and honestly the entire show) and completely disregarding the lessons he learnt from some older episodes, but, if we stop to think about it, it does make sense

think back to you as a kid watching tv. Did you watch all of the episodes of everything in order?, no, you did not, you picked the show halfway through, dropped it, then watched some repeats, maybe after 8 chapters you finally saw the first, etc. The story NEEDS to go back to the original form for their target audience to actually keep track of the show, that's why they cant have an overaching plot or make it non episodic.

My real problem with this is the same problem I pointed out in over the garden wall, the comedy actually undermines the writing and make the whole thing worse because of it

most of the jokes are very predictible and very, very dumb, which doesn't fit at all with what the show is trying to do in my opinion. It has a lot of "oh wow I hope bad thing doesn't happen rn" and then that bad thing just happens. But worse is the "uhhh you acutally do this regulary" jokes, where they claim a character usually does somethign that has never actually happen in the show and then they cut to a flashback of that character doing that thing

If you're trying to sell that mistery aura, making jokes like that is just saying you don't trust the viewer, we don't expect you to remember this thing that happened last episode or even 5 minutes ago, we must show both things at once.

So what's the value in watching shows like this?, you're not watching anything new, everything that this shows has to offer has already been doen better in other shows, it's enjoyable but only if you have been infected by the fandom or have no point of reference to which compare this show to. The only reason anyone would ever watch it to understand the cultural phenomenom behind it, and that is why I watched it

Watching this show I had a feeling of "this seems like Twin Peaks but suited for children", but then I realized I had actually never watched twin peaks, so after the first season finished I just started watching twin peaks. Just finished chapter 1 like 30 minutes ago, and it's just a WAY more enjoyable experience for me

Some people may claim that comparing a disney cartoon to what is considered one of the best tv shows of all time is an unfair comparasion, and while there is some truth to that (they aim for different audiences), I don't think that the criticism is valid

While on a industry/econoical level they're completely different beasts, you as a human being shouldn't care too much about that, the reality is that you have a limited ammount of time, and you can either invest that time into watching gravity falls or twin peaks. Something being in the top of their field doesn't matter if that is still less worth it than something else.

I've given this show a lot of shit, but I actually do believe it's on the higher echelon of cartoons, still D tier tho.

i was expecting this. it's genuinely a high quality game imo, graphics are very well done and true to what they're trying to mimic. the gameplay is usually looking for a button and a switch while being hunted down by something but i think they also throw in some other challenges too.

1. you dont have to play doom first, tbh anyone can pick up doom mods without actually playing one of the og doom games
2. its not that bad, the scare factors are mostly low in myhouse.wad imo
3. i have played it and i had fun, surely you can too

also if you do intend to play myhouse.wad or just plain doom, you'll need a wad of doom 2 and a port/something that will make the doom games properly run (like GZdoom, that's the one most people use, and if you want a classic, exact 1993 experience you can use chocolate doom)

Reyalp51 wrote:

I have already played yume nikki (as you already know), but I won't be putting it on S tier.

Yume nikki is a narrative exploration game made in RPGMaker about a girl that just dreams weird shit. The gameplay just consists of you walking around and seeing stuff. No combat, no lose condition, no real goal, just explore.

This is a game that challenges the conventional idea of quality in the videogame industry, i'm sure most of you have seen these type of review at some point of your life

In order for something to be good, it must check a certain ammount of boxes, this plays into certain ideas that are baked into our understanding of games. For a game to be good, first, it must be fun, because "if it's not fun, why bother", it must have an engaging gameplay loop, but it should also probably have a good OST and graphics!, yume nikki is a game that doesn't check any of those boxes, yet is good regardless.

This is often shocking for a lot of people experiencing yume nikki (or games like this), for the first time, the idea that a game like this should not be possible. This is because that way of seeing media is heavily missguided, IMO, it just needs to feel like it's worth it, it doesn't matter how it achieves this, but you must be glad to have experienced what it had to offer. Sometimes we play games that we know are bad, because the experience of playing said bad game is worth it

What yume nikki has to offer is just a really unique experience (specially for it's time), and a very psychological one at that. By exploring and watching the dreams of this person, in a way we are exploring their subconcious, however, everything is too ambiguous to actually say anything concrete. The actual plot of the game, or the actual meaning of the dreams (if they have any), is all left to the players interpretation.

The plot of the game depends on context. Everything can mean anything, yume nikki can be about mcdonalds if you set your mind to it. Thing is, the community that has currently adopted this, have this bias that in order to really appreciate a certain piece of media, it's important to know every small detail of it. Playing the game is not enough, you must see every single detail, even the cut content, everything has to have some sort of meaning, you must watch the iceberg on it. It's inconceivable that anything may just not have any real meaning behind it, you know, maybe the person just liked making prison games

My current interpretation of yume nikki is that this was just kikiyama's sandbox. Yume nikki isn't an extremely delicately crafted horror masterpiece. I just see it as kikiyama trying out stuff, maybe displaying some of their own dreams, or at least versions of it, and it just so happens that it can be interpreted as a delicately crafted horror masterpiece

The most interesting part of yume nikki for me is the actual legacy it has. While yume nikki didn't do anything too special by itself, it did create a blueprint on how to depict someones psyche in a videogame, so other videogame took those methods and concepts and mixed it with some other stuff to create really cool stuff

For example, lisa the first (yeah I ended up playing it) is a yume nikki fangame where it uses those elements to show how lisa percieved her father. Omori has a yume nikki like section (red space) to show the fucked up state of the protagonist, picayune dreams is a survivors like game where the plot is shown by weird flashbacks told in a yume nikki format, copper odyssey just uses the confusion aspect of yume nikki ti create a REALLY confusing feeling RPG

Yume nikki isn't as much as game, but a tool for people to create (better) games, and while I appreciate the game for actually creating it, I much prefeer the games that takes yume nikki concept and run with it.

Placed in A tier because games don't exist in a vacuum and things like bias and context matters (if not it would be lower).

my house (dropped)

this was fucking catastrophic LMAO

My house is a puzzle/soft horror mod for DOOM 2, I haven't played doom, but I was told that I can just play this mod without ever having played doom, so I do

I play the level, that is in fact, a house, I find the exit, and move on to the next level!, the next level is a little bit more fun, even if it doesn't have the house appearance, I beat that level, and I go back to the house level

at that point, I was like, ah, you're bringing me back to this level but this time it's going to be different!, so I beat the house level again, which turned out to be the exact same, and I move on to level 2 once again, and at that point, I got very confused since I clearly was doing something wrong

I look it up, and I find where my mistake was, apparently, the fun part of my house was trying to discover the secret, in fact, the walkthrough I looked up on youtube had in the overlay the timer, the total kills, and something saying "secrets, 0/1", thing is, I didn't have that overlay since well, I had never played doom and I don't have a pro overlay set up, and I didn't even know there was a secret

Not only that, but the level I was going into apparently was a vanilla doom level, so if I had played doom, I would have recognised that.

So I look at a little bit of the video to see where I have to go,and apparently, once you give a full rotation over the house, you're actually teleported to an alternate house that is the exact same but 2 things are different, + all of the enemies are back. Thing is, I actually had found this in my first run of the house, thing is, I have never played doom, and I thought the enemies just could respawn under certain conditions, even the keycards were back as skulls, which I thought it was a neat game design thing to remind you where the keycard was to better help orient you

so, apparently, you must compare the two version of the house, discover what extra objects are there, and pick them up, up to there, a little bit tedious, but I see how someone could discover it, after that, you must go back to a new zone in the house, interact with something I didn't know you could interact, unveiling a mirror, go back to the second bathroom, climb into the mirror and jump in

keep in mind, I have been given NO narrative indication or any clues really, discovering that on my own would have taken me at least an hour.

after that, you kinda do the same thing, run around, pick the objects that are difference, explore the extra rooms, and after that it will led you to the original house, after that, you get into a brand new area, (a playground) find and pick up two objects (That unlike the previous objects, you can't find them by comparison since there isn't really any way to know which objects are important just yet), punch a wall repeatedly, get chased by shrek, kill shrek, pick up a key, go back to the house, fill up all the sinks, then go back to one of the bathrooms, climb up the previously unclimbable bath, sink for like 10 seconds and then explore a new area

and then, it hits me, you're NOT supposed to play the game, you're supposed to watch youtube videos about it. Since, the actual game is a horrible experience if you don't know what you're doing, so I stopped playing it

This game is essentially youtube bait, the plot is told via the objects you pick up and the ambients, which is very ambiguous and leaves a lot of space for theorizing, however, outside the concept of having no dialogue or whatever, which is not new, it doesn't do anything interesting, the actual story really doesn't take advantage of that medium

Some parts of the house have impossible geometry omg!!! how can this possible, (ironic since i'm reading house of leaves RN, however house of leaves is actually good), but again, it really doesn't take advantage of the impossible geometry, + all the ways this is even showcased, antichamber did it better 11 years ago.

this game is only good if you have first seen a yt video about how it is very good and haven't played any similar games in the past.

Undertale is a game that I have already played and personally I have an interesting relationship towards it, this is a game that i'm VERY biased towards (so now, like tim rogers taught us in their reviews, I must proceed to talk about my life so you understand the biases influencing my opinion the game which is actually the correct way to talk about media since there is no such thing as an objective review.)

when undertale came out, the internet EXPLODED, I was 10yo at the time, and while at first I kinda avoided it because I heard it was cringe and for losers, after a while I folded, and did something I would NEVER do nowadays, and that is, watch a playthrough of the game BEFORE playing it, which I enjoyed. I don't know how much of me enjoying those videos came from the game itself or the youtuber playing it

At that point I wasn't too keen on pirating stuff, I didn't have the money, and unlike how I am now, instead of playing a variety of video games, I just had 2-3 specific videogames I just liked to spend all of my time on. So yeah, I never actually played undertale

thing is, time passes, I was like 12, and I start meeting people who actually HAD played undertale, so in order to more easily fit in, I did play undertale (I didn't want to be a fan of the game without having played in, which I was up to that point), I did a pacifist walkthrough, (not true pacifist tho) and I think I enjoyed my time with it, A few years later, I started a genocide run but I never finished it, I stopped playing it around the core part

few extra years passes, I think I was 13, my brain was starting to develop more, it was halloween, I was having a sleepover with a friend of mine, and then, randomly, deltarune chapter 1 releases, up to that point I felt a little bit of remorse for not having really been able to experience as much joy from playing undertale as I had done up to that point, so I just start playing it completely blind with my friend. I ended up beating the game in 2 days.

I enjoyed it WAY MORE than when I played undertale or even watched it, since I actually got to experience it myself. At that moment I didn't know what exactly made deltarune so good, but when chapter 2 released, and SPECIALLY when I played everhood I got it

When I played everhood, I instantly noticed it was clearly inspired by toby fox, and that was, the dialogue. The way toby fox writes dialogue is actually very different to how other devs write it. Instead of imitating the dialogue from a book or a movie (which I want to clarify, is VERY different to IRL speech), it imitates the way people talk over the internet, some things not being capitalized, the inconsistent speed at which some dialogues are shown on screen, the type of comedy, in deltarune chapter 2 the queen is literally the representation of the internet

this is not the first time it has been done, but I think toby fox IS the person to actually popularize it, I have also seen it in some itch.io games that I won't talk about here.

Undertales entire selling point was that you could spare enemies, but I would honestly argue that the cast of characters is what carries toby fox as a developer

But what really makes me enjoy it, is just my life experiences. It's the joy of seeing something you liked 8 years ago evolve and branch out, whenever I see a game be inspired by undertale I just feel happy, each toby fox releases correlates to a different step of my life, to a different frame of mind, all of that has made undertale grow on me, I enjoy it way more now than I did when I actually played it.

This game is an S tier, but yeah, heavy bias.
