chi is a anime about the discovery of the astronomical model of heliocentrism, and all the problems that created with the church. While it's very known that the church wasn't exactly a big fan of changes like this, there aren't really all that many movies or animes about it
chi offers once again a really detailed picture of not only how the research was conducted, but of how it was to live in that era, the anime shifts between many characters and I feel every character offers a different perspective on the society of it's time, from the priviliged to the poor, from men to women, from believer to non believer, etc.
I don't think it's a spoiler to say chi is a very brutal anime, like i'm surprised at the ammount of characters that die, and I really enjoy how death is portrayed in this anime, it's not always dramatic or like the climax of the character arc or whatever, most of the deaths in this anime and unceremonious and unfair. This anime isn't supposed to have "hype momenst and aura", it's just a portrayal of it's era
the art is fucking amazing, like the sky looks STUNNING, you see it and you understand why every character in this anime is seemengly interest in astronomy LMAO, I don't really have much to say other than that
the ending is just also really good, it turns out that at the end of the day, what seemed like to be the big moment where the theory was complete and was going to be released to the public... never ends up happening, the anime ends with a message that goes "oh yeah this shit went on for another 200 years lmao" or something like that, I don't remember the exact timeframe, but you didn't feel cheated out
the anime carries this concept of that while you may die, your ideas may persist. The first protagonist basically commited suicide due to that mindset, them failing doesn't come to great surprise having seen the brutality of that era, but it's hopeful, we live in the current day and you know their research does end up making it big and revolutianizing the world, the anime didn't want to show the full process, it didn't just want to show the life of the final guy, they wanted to depict the era, and they do an amazing job at that
really solid anime, great animation, really interesting story of astronomy, great commentary on the era, super cool narrative structure, great finale, I don't know what else to say, this is a S rank.
also, if you wanted an S rank that bad, you could just have looked at my MAL profile or something you know?
