Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
mixed thoughts
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind isn't exactly a romance movie, it's more a breakup movie, two people meet, start dating, and after a while they decide to get a operation that removes each other from their mind, re-experiencing the memories together one last time before they disappear. This is a really good concept for the movie, my problem is when it starts going off rail
This is still a american romance movie released in 2004, and there are certain tropes of this genre in this specific time period that I just despise, they can't just have the movie be the romance itself terminating and visualizing everything with the extra context that it has ended, they have to introduce a third party that maliciously tries to steal the girl because no hollywood romance can be complete without sexual harassment. To be fair to this movie, this isn't a case where the protagonist is the asshole, they are probably the best character and the most reasonable in the movie, but man, it sucks because I think it kinda drags down the premise
I would have loved the movie just commit to that initial premise, for it to be a movie closer to something like 5cm per second, but that just cant be. It kinda devolves into a more toxic drama that I just didn't care that much for. The ending was eh and honestly it didn't make me feel that much
however, I have to say the movie is amazing at a visual level, and in general I think the montage segment that it has are amazing, like the bird scene, but they're bundled in a package I just don't really like that much in full
Placed in C rank
edit: also, I find it funny that for a title as long and abstract as that one they ACTUALLY say it in the movie that was sick as fuck I was like YOOOOOOOOOOOOO in that scene
