Blood Meridian

honestly i'm kinda dissapointed by this book

acclaimed by some as one of the most disturbing, fucked up, terrible books ever written, while also holding a masterpiece status, blood meridian is a western about the violence of 1850 in the current border with mexico

all of that definitively happens, a lot of people get killed in the most horrible ways ever, thing is, I feel i'm kinda desensitized of it already?, this book was written in 1985, nowadays, violent media is more accesible than ever, this is most common with videogames where you killing half the human race has become a joke. Of course there is a difference between those two examples, in videogames killing is framed as fun, while blood meridian gives very graphical explanations of the murders, which is percieved as a bad act, it also uses these descriptions to make comments on the nature of racism and killing.

however, even when they kill someone like that, I just honestly don't really give a shit, the act of killing is not really enough, in order for that to really have an impact on me, I must have a emotional connection to the characters, something that doesn't really happen over the book, since the book is more centered in the actual scenario and historical period than in the plot with the characters

Still, the book is really well written, I haven't read that many books if i'm being honest, so I don't really have a point of comparasion, but the narration on this book felt quite a bit more poetic than in other books i've read, which is nice

the thing I don't really get about this book is why the mexican characters are written like they are, like this is nit-pikcing, but while it does make sense that they talk spanish between each other and that those lines of dialogue are written in spanish, I don't get why the narration mixes spanish words while talking about the mexican individuals, stuff along the lines of "he grabbed his escopeta" instead of "he grabbed his shotgun", blood meridian isn't the first book to commit this sin by far (honestly it happens with most spanish-speaking characters in american created media), but it's still something I don't really get

idk, this book didn't just really hit for me, c tier

thing is, it looks like this sometimes seemingly unironically happens in first-gen/second-gen mexican-american families... i see it firsthand as part of one where english is primarily used while having absorbed spanish with effective fluency, and it causes me to wonder about a lot

...in any case, it isn't very intuitive for the narrative flow a book in my mind-- but it arguably could be trivial as long as everything is understood and you aren't pausing for minutes at a time for a translation dictionary just to read from what's happening

no, I don't mean the spaninglish, that it makes sense, if the mexican character is speaking, it makes sense for them to mix up words, what I mean is the actual NARRATION, which shouldn't fall on the same mistakes

if the original language is english, I read them in english, if it's spanish, I read it in spanish, if it's a third language I don't know how to speak, whichever I get my hands on first

contrary to your opinion i actually love it when books do that

Tagalog literature (originally written in English) also does the same thing, and imo it's a really effective way of getting me more immersed and connected to the (Filipino) setting (which is distinct from using Tagalog words interlaced in dialogue, which just tells me that the characters are Filipino)

yeah! that's what i meant to distinguish, maybe ineffectively;; i agree with you, to the effect that it's commonly pretty awkward if you don't have a frame of rationale for that. it can be very definitively distracting and it's not particularly helpful for a reader when that's not something that was anticipated or accepted :/

Girls und Panzer

watched both the anime and the follow up movie, it was mid.

Girls und Panzer is a slice of life that tries to bait war thunder players by having cool and manly and important shit like drive tanks instead of dumb activities for little girls such as camping or sailing small boats as turistic guides

slice of life (and more specificly CGDCT/Iyashikei) is a genre that thrives out of feelings, it's not what they do or what they see, but what you feel while watching it, the actual content doesn't matter as long as it accomplishes it's goal, which is often making you feel relaxed and happy, not only that, but a lot of these shows are also surprisingly educational

This also applies to other genres, I think the best example are sport animes, you don't need to play volleyball to enjoy haikyuu or ping pong to enjoy ping pong the animation, and in many ways you will learn about these sports by watching the anime

Girls und Panzer is the opposite of this, you need to enjoy tanks and the community online surrounding tanks to be able to really enjoy it. The anime assumes you already know quite a bit about tanks, and the focus is on the tanks, not the characters, which barely develops over the course of the anime

at the start of the anime, the protagonist hates tanks, almost has a moral conviction about tanks, she moves to a new school to avoid tanks, she's afraid that she wont be able to make friends but luckily she meets a few girls that become her friend really quickly, however, driving tanks get introduced to their school and her new friends wants to participate on it.

This is a REALLY GOOD dynamic, you could honestly do a full on drama anime with that premise, however instead of really pushing it forward, it basically gets dropped by chapter 3, where the main character has a change of mind and now thinks tanks are really cool, her character or relation to other characters doesn't change or evolve significantly over the course of the anime

this is specially bad with the movie, where it's straight up 2 hours of a single tank fight, and unless you care about tank fights, it just doesn't spark any emotion on you

they also really sacrifice a lot of the universe and the world in order to make the premise work, in no universe there are high school girls driving tanks, much less having straight up tank fights where they could easily die in the MIDDLE OF THE STREET WITH CIVILIANS PASSING BY, AND THE CIVILIANS LIKE IT. Driving tanks is also percieved as a feminine thing and even whern a character critics tanks, it's not because they are war machines, it's because she wanted her daughter to be more gentle

in a lot of slice of life anime part of the fan is observing the world, but if you just make the world completely nonsensical, it's not the most fun to really watch, because if they can just pull that shit out of their ass without any real story justification, they can pull anything off their ass (like what they did in the movie, where they kinda just made up a situation to keep the story going)

(note, if you were to make the world nonsensical but actually take advantage of that fact by making it a plot point like some other more psychological slice of lifes, that's fine, it's just kinda ruining your world-building and then letting that weight you down)

placed on D tier

the book thief

pretty good

a book about a girl who lives in nazi germany and likes literature but she's poor and shit so like she has to steal books like the name suggest great plot twist I know

The idea behind this book, or at least how I percieved it was a criticism to the society of nazi germany. Hitler had a 90% support rate, and a large part of that was due to really clever propaganda, one of the most notorious actions the nazi government took was the act of burning books

however, the protagonist of the book actually like read books, and forbidden ones in fact, so they thought hitler was a pretty bad guy, it also shows the viewpoint of other characters who didn't read books

so yeah, this is a book about the power of literature, so while reading it you're like "yoooo i'm reading a book i'm better than 90% of people living in nazi germany"

also this book is narrated by death itself and I thought that was raw as fuck

I really don't have much to say about this book, it was nice, B rank

-------

edit: I read look back like 2 days ago?, completely forgot to post it here LMAO

look back

it's a oneshot manga by chainsaw man's author Tatsuki Fujimoto, but IMO it's better than chainsaw man

it's about a girl who draws manga, but then like stuff happens like this is only a volume long it really isn't long at all I cant talk about it without spoiling the shit out of it

This is a VERY drastic change of direction for fujimoto, this is closer as a manga to a silent voice than it is to chainsaw man, in a way it feels like it has more soul to it, fujimoto is a very young mangaka, and they have already made it, so it seems like they're just having fun now,

the structure of the manga feels very inspired by tragic romance movies such as the previously mentioned silent voice or other movies like I want to eat your pancreas, the emotional flow is very well done, and even if it's only one volume, it does kinda hit

The art is surprisingly good, being able to draw well isn't enough to know how to draw well, you NEED to create a situation where you can allow your art to flourish, I recently read through umineko, and while the art was pretty good all around, the setting was very stil, and there were really no ways to really fit a panel that was impactful

like, this panel

hits harder than this panel

my only real complain about the manga is that it's way too short, and that it doesn't really have the time to go in-depth enough about all of the themes they're covering, there are other manga covering the same topics that do it in a better, more profound way, however, with the movie coming out that expands on the manga, and given the manga structure basically being created with a movie in mind, I can't say i'm not hyped for it

currently, it's a combination of two factors, my mindset (which honestly I think it's the most important part), and the fact that i'm on a gap year and I have a lot of free time, but again, I don't put that much time in a row to anything, so it's mostly mindset

I'm a person that values media literacy and overall being exposed to many different works of fiction, I do see to just finding something that you really like and sticking to it and not trying to explore new things a mistake, by reading art you're absorbing new ideas and even having new experiences

My entire free time is structured in a way where I don't really burn much time seeing things that I don't see as valuable, I barely watch youtube, I avoid spending too much time in social media, etc. Not only that, but I have a minimum threshold of how much time I feel like I need to put to a certain thing each day, so for now, i'm doing around 45 minutes each day reading books, and while doing it, and very focused on it

if I'm just doing something more boring in the computer, and I want to put something on the other monitor to make it a bit more pleasing, instead of putting YT I put a movie on

also, the more you read, the better you're at reading, you understand more of the text and you also read faster

I don't restrain myself, I burn myself out if I do stuff like that, if anything, I do multiple 45 minute sessions in a day, but for me, putting like 7 hours in a row into something is impossible, my maximum is like 2-3 hours, but i'm most comfortable with 45 minutes

Legend of the galactic heroes (Remake + Original OVA)

It's really fucking good

This anime is a sci-fi drama about space politics, there are two main guys, a cool good guy who is just a regular dude in the army that climbs the ranks because he is really good and an evil dictator that runs the enemy empire and shit, however, everything is very morally gray, this isn't as one sided as star wars which has a similar premise

In fact, in order to drive that home, the protagonist for the first 2 chapters (at least for the remake) is not the "good guy" protagonist, but the other guy, at the start, you're supposed to root for the "evil" guy, and then, whenever the other protagonist gets introduced and the shift of the anime changes, you're meant to reconsider who are you rooting for and why, you're forced to think critically about the guy you were just rooting for

Half of the anime are these two protagonist sitting in room and talking, discussing the problems of their respective empires, governments, and what are the plans for defeating their opponent, the actual action scenes aren't too much fluff explosion death look he's so badass, but it's mainly focused on explaining military strategy to the person watching it, kinda like some parts of kingdom

and this just continues on and on since the anime is really fucking long and goes REALLY in depth about some stuff, you can't just overthrow a corrupt government and that's it, you need to ensure that the new government resists the corruption, as the anime explains that politicians doesn't just go "i'm going to be evil" but there are circumstances and a process where a politician get's inducted into corruption

eblf don't read

There is a part where the good guy protagonist makes an independent political movement to try to stop the evil guy, however, he fucking dies, this both shifts the focus from the actual characters to the actual world and circumstance, and forces the members of that movement to make a difficult choice, how do they decide the next leader, which shows very easily how a seemingly democratic system could fall into monarchy or dictatorship real easily

Now, the remake doesn't run forever, and contrary to what seems the consensus online, I enjoy the remake more than the original series, and that is because everything that isn't the actual writing on the original OVA sucks, the art is really bad, like the actual fight scenes are laughable, there isn't much of an ost or sound design and the actual openings are pretty bad

The story is also incredibly dense from start to end, you don't really have breaks, so it can be really hard to watch near the end because you've watched other 100 episodes of what is basically a political debate

still, this anime is very important for a variety of reasons. Nowadays, there is the idea that mediums such as film or video games should only have the goal of being fun, "If it's not fun, why bother". When the director of the last of us 2 said "hey, this game is not meant to be fun", there was backlash, because what is the point of a videogame if it's not fun

That's why stuff like politics or philosophy or whatever are often shamed upon, these are elements that the biggest blockbusters shy away from because they want to appeal to as many people as possible in order to make up for their stupidly high budget

This is an old anime that embraces the least fun elements, and polish them into something amazing, still not the most fun, but after watching it you feel it was worth it. And this is considered one of the greatest anime ever created. Which is great for the medium as a whole

so yeah, good anime, S rank

This movie was alright

It's actually a horror film but I didn't realize until I was watching the film, thankfully it wasn't too bad

the movie is about a biologist that goes into a place called the shimmer in what's basically a suicide expedition because no one that had gone into the shimmer had made it out alive

the shimmer is this nearly fantastical incredibly colorful forest, a place that doesn't really feel dangerous, it almsot elt like something from a fairy tail, this kinda subverts yoru expectatives because well, you expeect the scary place to be... scary, however you know you're watching a horror film so you still brace yourself for the worst

I really like that design choice, since it really helps push the message of the film, what causes all the deaths and the horrors isn't really anything evil, simplifying a lot, what the shimmer does is amplify and imitate the inherent self-destructiveness nature of humankind. The entire movie is around that idea of self-destruction

The only persons that would go in what is basically a suicide mission are persons that are already self-destructive, and given that they never make it out, the people outside never learn of this fact, which causes them to really never break the cycle

So yeah, pretty smart movie, still, I didn't really quite vibe with it idk why so C tier

I know you're trolling with this request and you tried to request the worst thing you could, but this unironically was so fucking funny

it's a furry fanime told in youtube shorts, the art is fucking awful, so is the plot, and the characters, but it's so bad it loops back around and it's good

of course this isn't nearly as good as a proper parody comedy series like garth merenghi's darkplace or even nyan neko sugar girls which yes i'm putting at the same level as darkplace, but it unironically understands their medium and audience well

this series is improved by the fact that are youtube shorts, as it's built with that idea in mind, there are multiple gags that involve it being youtube shorts, like the intense action part that just randomly has subway surfers in the bottom half, this is even better considering that this is both the shortest part and an action scene, which are normally supposed to be the more engaging part of these type of stories

the fucking arc where they get called gay and they transform into a super powerful being out of rage and unleash a shockwave of pure straight power that nearly resets the universe is good, same with the latest part (23) which i'm not spoiling but it's a banger joke too

I don't know if I should place this on the tier list as it feels like it would be an insult to everyone else to put it as high, but it would probably land between A and B, it's unironically good

Ex Machina

Enjoyed it way more than annihilation

This movie is about a guy who gets selected to try to prove an AI a rich misogenistic guy made is sentient, point is, it's impossible to know if a machine has developed or not consciousness. Even if you had a machine that acted like a human and talked like a human, they could just be faking having a consciousness

Even with the experiments performed in the movie, it's impossible to know if it's sentiant or know, in fact, one of the end twists is that the real test to see if their AI could try to socially manipulate the guy into getting her freedom, even if this something that is really hard for an AI to do, it's not impossible, and therefore, we don't know if it's conciouss or not (also the fact that the rich guy modelled the AI as a sexually appealing girl for him didn't help prove his case either, if it was just a box like it was suggested earlier in the movie that manipulated the guy it would have even more merit)

Thing is, while it may be missguided, it makes sense for those experiments to be missguided, as they show the flaws in both the rich guy and the regular guy. The rich guy is a fucking asshole, he isolated themselves from the world and owned a sex slave, the way he justified his asshole mentality is that it was just human nature, therefore, if an AI could replicate that type of behaviour, it would be on the same level as a human As an example, he believed sexuality was both needed for human interaction to happen and something required for the AI to know how to use as a weapon to prove itself as concious

The regular guy also had flaws, smaller flaws, he wasn't even in the same universe of assholery as the rich guy, but still, (In fact, I don't think the protagonist ever really thought she was sentient, he just thought he would gain benefit from believing it was sentient and helping it), these were things the AI exploited

This is a pretty good movie all-around, def vibed with it a lot more than annihilation, so putting it in A rank

Half life episode 1 and 2

Honestly this game just feels like a really well polished tech demo

It's a single player shooter developed by valve, about a guy with a crowbar defending humanitry from an alien invasion, the actual story is pretty basic, yeah it has some element of mistery near the end because half life 3 was never released and we never saw the continuation to the plot of g-man and stuff, but it's clearly not the focus of the game, the focus of the game is the shooting at aliens, and it does a pretty good job at that.

Half life is actually developed under the havok engine, and they wanted to flex it as much as they could, the most interesting part about havok are the physic calculations it could do, and half life is built from the ground up with the idea of that phyisic based gameplay. In many parts you will have to move objects, jump on seesaws, and in half life 2, use a antigravity gun to literally pick up objects around you and throw it to the enemies

it was more a "look at we can do" rather than "this will fit really well in the game" tho, for example, until the very end of the game, I found the gravity gun, which is like the big thing of half-life 2 pretty underwelming, it's a very situational weapon (since you couldn't use it in certain enviroments) that can do ok damange and often blocks your own vision with the object you're carrying. Not only that, but if you were to pick up something like a explosive barrel, enemies could shoot at you, hitting the barrel and doing WAY MORE damage than they would have done it. It was never really worth it to use a explosive barrel than the rocket launcher. If the ammo economy was tighter it could have seem some use, but the game makes sure you have all the ammo you need in every part of the game to make sure you don't get stuck

They're very wacky at times, and if you make a mistake and don't realize the intended solution to a puzzle, the game just doesn't really work. I rememberi n half life 2 a segment where there was a seesaw and you needed to put barrels on one side of the seesaw, underneath so they were to float up in the water and push one side down, but instead of putting the barrels underwater, I put them on the opposite site of the seesaw on the ground, and that solution did not work, had to google to see what was I doing wrong

Half life 2 also introduces steam achivements, which was a brand new feature at the time. and again, they just added them because they wanted to show off the techonoly, not because adding steam achivvements could make the game better. They're often "reach this part of the game" or "collect x many thigs!", they're not achivements that feel cool to obtain and if you were to 100% the game, it would become a pain real quick

There was actually a story by the developer of antichamber, where valve reached out to him sayign "hey add steam achivements to your game, it will probably boost the sale numbers", and he went like "achivements would contribute nothing to my game" so he didn't, and that was the correct choice IMO

A game that has good steam achivements in my personal opinion would be a game like BTD6, where they turned a lot of community made challenges like "beat chimps with only 2 towers" into an actual ingame challenge, or games like isaac or picayune dreams where you can restore your savefile by looking at your steam achivements, since each achivement is tied to an unlock.

The level design in half life 1 and 2 is as good as it (probably) could be, both games constantly make you feel like you're in danger, there is no time to actually explore every bit of the map, everything wants to kill you and since killing enemies doesn't actually give you a reward, if skipping a fight is an option, it's likely the correct option

Even while rushing through the maps at max speed you normally don't get lost, the game pushes you in the right direction most of the time (sometimes you have to backtrack and that isn't quite clear and or you just don't see a door tho, that felt annoying), however, I feel I didn't get lost often mainly because I have been playing videogames my whole life, I was using stuff like ammunition packs and things like that as markers of where the game wanted me to go, but someone who is newer to gaming may not pick that up and get really lost

The game features f6 f9 gameplay, it allows for quicksaves to be done and loaded really quickly, which changes the gameplay completely compared to our more modern checkpoint based gameplay. By having mistakes only cost you a few seconds instead of having to retry a mission, you play a lot more reckless. If you're playing a modern game you may often go slower and play more tactical since well, you're doing so well in this mission and you don't want to start over, in half life since that danger doesn't exist you can just try as many dumb and dangerous ideas and you can

I think this fits very well with the feeling half life is trying to push, it makes you feel a lot more powerful and it's faster paced gameplay allows for that feeling of danger and haste I described earlier

anyways yeah half life alyx exists but I don't have the means to play it since valve is again trying to flex their technology again and made it what I think is the first ever AAA VR only game, which is neat, I love VR, more people should support the technology so it gets cheaper, but until that happens, I cant play alyx

Placed in A rank, it still was fun even if I really shat on it LMAO

Top of the lake Season 1

sex can be a pretty fucked up thing am I right

This is a pretty standard TV drama with a fairly convoluted plot about rape, pedophilia and all other cool forms of sex, the entire tv show, at least season 1, is about this girl who falls pregnant and the search for who is the father

I don't really have a lot to say about this show, it doesn't really go deep enough or give a different message than the things i've already watched in the past

also I fucking swear movies and stuff are making me not want to have sex LMAO, whenever sex is presented in a negative form they do it in this way where they really nail that home and make it awful and whatever and whenever it's presented in a positive form you're probably watching austin powers so in a way that's like presenting it in a negative form

Placed in B tier, don't think I will be watching season 2 tho

Howls Moving Castle:

it's a studio ghibli film, so it's pretty good

Howl's Moving Castle is a fantasty adventure film about mages and stuff, it's prettyh good all around, the plot isn't the most daring or whatever but it doesn't need to do so. The way I see it ghibli kinda creates those standards, they pick a pretty basic story and polish it to oblivion, this movie is probably one of the best version of the typical story of defeat the evil wizard guy, it's not so much ghibli's task to subvert your expectations than to create those expectations for other anime to subvert

The art is really good as it was to be expected, same with other most technical aspects of the movie, it's not really worth pointing them one by one since you kinda just expect it already

Honestly the only point to really discuss with ghibli films in my opinion are the energies the movie provides. My favourite ghibli movie is totoro, it was the one I grew up with, it is a very relaxing, happy, low stakes movies with a pretty beautiful setting, howl's moving castle is more traditional fantasy, so it is not relaxing or low stakes really, this just appeals more to a different type of person

so yeah, it's just a good movie, I don't really have to say that many things about it, A tier

-----------------------------

Lilyhammer

Comedy/drama tv show, only saw season 1

it's about a guy in a mafia that has to move to norway, half of the film are jokes on how hard it is to integrate into norwegian society and the other half is the actual crime plot

I don't think these two aspects really mix well which each other, the jokes are pretty good, but they're often cut short due the mafioso personality of the protagonist coming in making the situation more complicated and less funny in my opinion, and the plot, while nothing wrong by itself, seem to be afraid of really going deep or doing something interested due to the fact that this is set in the context of a comedy tv show, so it kinda ends up being mediocre at both

A way to pull off something like this properly IMO would be something like our flag means death, (I haven't seen many TV shows but honestly this may be my favourite), they go full out with their comedy and then are able to develop a surprisingly engaging story on top of it by making the actual storylines of each individual characters the interesting part, not an overarching complex storyline like lilyhammer tries to do

I just don't really see what was the vision with lilyhammer, I don't know if they tried making a seirous tv show, felt it was too heavy, and tried to make it comedy, or if they wanted to make a comedy but they were afraid of going full out on it due to it becoming too silly and that bieng a bad thing

I don't think I will be watching the other seasons of this, placed in C tier

Whiplash

it's really fucking good, I'm not going to spoiler tag anything since I assume everyone is familiar with whiplash due to it being a modern classic and all

it's a movie about a guy who plays drums, and wants to get better at drums, so he starts practicing under this instructor which is like the strictest, most awful human being to ever work under

The objective of the instructor is to create a legend in the jazz sphere, and he strongly believes the best way to create someone like that is to push someone to their absolute max, to not settle for anything under perfection, it being painful being painful was a required evil

This is actually a philosophy that many people do hold, honestly, if you just search in youtube you can find tons of videos on whiplash that glorify this mentality, that believes that fletcher was in the right for pushing neiman that much

Neiman for example was a person that truly believed in that mentality, he wanted to be great, and he thought this was the best way for him to reach that goal, which led him for him to actually be able to endure fletcher's training

Now, I personally see two problems with this philosohpy

1- It really doesn't guarantee greatness at all
2- You ruin your life in the process

About the first point, fletcher believes that as long as you obtain enough technical skill you will raise to the top, that as long as you're good enough at playing the drums you will rise up into one of the best of all time. This doesn't really work that way

Technical skill isn't enough to carry you, you also need to know how to actually write songs, to create art, you also need some more finnancial skills like know how to market yourself and know which deals are good for you. If you're the best drummer ever but can only produce soulless songs, then it's all wasted potential, and honestly the more artistic side of things, I feel it's important to have a lower stress environment for them to flourish

The second point is somehow harder to argue against, we all know that neiman is going to die before they reach 30, probably due to suicide, drug overdose, or something along those lines, however, they don't give a shit, they even acknowledge that in the film, they consider dying early and being remembered in the history books a better outcome that dying at old age and not being remembered long term

I don't agree with this but honestly I don't have a strong point on why, I just think you got to be a little bit selfish with life, I don't want to people to praise me after i'm dead, if anything, I want people to praise me while i'm alive, you being influential can help other people, but not so much yourself in this circumstance

In the end of the movie we get confirmation, neiman did make it, he became a famous and well respected drummer, but we're meant to ask ourselves at what cost

The general philosophy of fletcher and neiman is honestly pretty similar to what we see online nowdays of hustle culture/sigma male stuff. The dream that if you just work hard enough you can make a gazillion dollars, it's a pretty dream to believe in, even before all of this, we had the american dream, that kinda played on the same ideas, but the sooner we realize we're not living in a meritocracy, the better

another aspect of the movie I would like to point out is how neiman behaviour directly makes the lives of people around them worse. He leaves his girlfriend, gets on bad terms with their family, they basically ruin all the social relationships in the life. This isn't a onesided action, his girlfriend truly did love him, that breakup is worse for her than it is for him. Everyone that loved him at any point of their life are basically having to deal with those relationships breaking off, he becomes an awful human being in the process of becoming good at drums

so yeah, peak movie, easy S rank

What if I recommend Phantom Requiem for the Phantom and Fate/Zero (Zero is the starting point of fate so you don't need to watch anything before dw).

Both are by Gen Urobuchi, same writer as Madoka.
Lapizote
okay ill just suggest something i've been obsessed about recently (enough to be writing an essay about it for my art class): blade runner 2049
