Until Then

Until then is a slice of life visual novel/graphical adventure from the philipines (Making it their real big success in this medium), it follows the life of mark, a kinda problematic student.

at the start this game doesn't really have much plot, as I said, it's a slice of life game, it just follows mark talking to people, the strength of the writing is directly proportional to the writing of the characters, and it just so happens that they have some of the best written characters in history. Every character is extremely charismatic (I fucking love cathy) and they also feel very natural

Until then isn't a game that is just trying to force anything to happen, a big part of the game is just talking to your friends. These friends may have problems, dramas, they may be a little bit sad today, a little bit happy today, and seeing a character sad or happy doesn't necessarily mean that they have something to tell us that will transform the plot and the story and whatever. Sometimes, characters are just sad, and given how we don't always point these things out irl, and we're playing from the eyes of mark, who is a human being, mark doesn't always point these things out.

Following the same principles, there are scenes where you are waiting on a train, so you just look at your phone, you look at social media and see the posts and retweets of your friends, these are not essential but they help develop those characters and also create a really nice atmosphere. Nothing here is vital to the plot, but they're just really neat scenes.

In many ways this game goes against chekhov's gun, it has a lot of things that could be called "unecessary" as they don't connect with the plot in any sort of way, but that really makes the game feel alive, the world isn't made for the player. It being SOL really works with this, as they never feels like these section of the games or aditional dialogue drags, the reason you're here and the reason why you're enjoying this videogame is seeing and talking with these characters, so you don't really care if that information is vital to the plot or not

The setting is also fairly smart, even if I think this was accidental. The game is set in the philippines, this is because the devs are from the philippines, but at the same time, if you're not from the pilippines, the setting is familiar yet fresh. It's still a urban area that you've seen trillion of times, but seeing the different currencies and architecture and stuff makes it feel kinda new

Now, without going into much detail, the game DOES get more plot heavy later on, but it still has that slice of life core, those later segments of the game plays like "how would they lifes be if THIS happened", it is also emotional as fuck

I swear I love cathy cathy is the best I want to protect cathy I want cathy to live a good life so you must imagine my face when they just randomly kill her at the end of the first playthrough like they fucking KNEW I was going to be hyper attached to this character and god she is just so fucking well written, constantly hinting at family problems but still being a human being so she doesn't really open up about it and when mark in the later playthroughs does try to engage her with it is just a really painful scene as they don't really fix anything

also yeah the whole paranormal stuff is amazing but as I said it earlier it's good because it's heavily based on that scene of cathy dying which is fucking amazing and it'ss still a slice of life game from start to end

this game is completely and absolutely amazing, it is my GOTY for 2024, and it is in my top 4 videogames of all time

Beacon Pines

I don't give a shit what anyone says beacon pines is peak

beacon pines is a choose your own adventure type game, the story is told via a narrator, and inside that story you will run around, do things and collect words, then the narrator will hit a blank word, and it's our duty to try to fit a word in that space, every word will completely change the plot going forward, however, there are two true endings, the rest are fail states

The art is pretty good and I generally had a blast playing it, all of the characters are very well written, all of the different routes felt interesting, in many ways it sidesteps a lot of the moral issues of time loop media having you do your best all the time, instead of making other people suffer just for your own benefit or fun.

This game honestly isn't that deep, there isn't that much to talk about, I don't have much thoughts about it, but man, I just had a lot of fun, it's cute, it's comfy, it was engaging, it was pretty, and personally, I'm giving it a S rank.

Beast Tamer

Also known as: The Beast Tamer Who Got Kicked Out From His Party Meets a Cat Girl From the Superior Race

This anime follow the recent isekai trope of x class got kicked from party but turns out to be OP, it's not exactly original, or really have a message, or really tries to do anything, it's just more fantasy (/isekai) anime for people who are into that, and i'm not part of that demographic

tbf, I didn't hate this anime, it's not as agressivily bad as some other anime in this genre. I feel that is because this anime kinda turns down the power fantasy a little bit, there is still a lot of that, but the protagonist is actually likeable and in general there aren't that many fights.

This anime just consists of the protagonist walking around and slowly forming a harem. Honestly i'm impressed the way they combine the power fantasy and the sex appeal. The protagonist is a beat tamer, their skill is that they can get beasts to obey him, thing is, kemonomimis such as catgirls count as beast, so while you own the super op catgirl and that also makes you strong in fights, you also own the catgirl.

Every few episodes there is a new species of kemonomimi with of course, a new size of breasts. Like this anime has everything, the strong powerful girl with big boobs, the smaller, shy girl who is insecure about her boob size, the clueless girl who has medium boobs, and a fucking maid because they ran out of moe fantasy species

While romance in the harem is implied, it never goes anywhere, there is one scene where one girl is "omg why does my heart beat fast around him" but like that's about it. Honestly I don't think they had the story planned out from the start

Like this anime has 13 episodes, episode 12 is CLEARLY a finale but then they realized they had to make a extra episode so they made 13 which honestly teases at a second season but I don't know if that is happening, manga/ln are still ongoing so check out those I guess

Also, every character is as plain as a rock. They only have 1 personality trait each, the hero's group is so absurdly antagonistic it kinda hurts my soul

placed in D rank

eh

the plot of this movie is ryan gosling being lonely and developing dellusions that makes him believe a sex doll is his real girlfriend

It may have been good for it's time (2007), as it treats the actual delusion with respect instead of making it the butt of jokes, but compared to what we have nowadays, it feels like it falls short

not really a spoiler but the way ryan gosling solves the delusion is by falling in love for a actual human being, this is a fine ending but I think it's kinda boring in a way?, like, they don't really go very deep at all, a lot of people feel lonely, everyone feels lonely at some point of their life, yet developing dellusions is very, very weird. I dont' feel this movie really represents why their brain did the things that it did, what were the life experiences that led to a such a heavy response as that one

other than that, it's just a very normal romance, I like that it's respectful and the protagonist isn't an asshole (which is hard to find with hollywood romances of that era) but at the same time there are way better romances, placed at C tier

Fallout New Vegas

This game is bizarre, mainly because it's a game built on top of a bethesda game and it constantly feels like it's trying to fight against it

The gameplay of fallout new vegas is jsut pretty bad, it's still more comfortable than fallout 1 and 2 (mainly because new vegas is considerably easier), but I respect the gameplay design of those fallouts more. Fallout new vegas has so many straight up unused mechanics, like the karma system, it's there because fallout 3 used it but while you may get the notification ingame it never manifests into anything, you have the limb system that fallout 1 and 2 used but I think it really kills the flow of combat. Fallout 1 and 2 were turn based so you were meant to sit down and just think about it, new vegas is real time, and not only that but a shooter, which is more often than not a adrenalinic genre, so stopping the flow of combat just to roll die is ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

there are survival elements, like crafting and food and stuff, ngl I straight up didn't interact with that part of the game at all, I never felt I needed it.

The game is still more balanced than 1 and 2 but it's very much not balanced, a lot of the skills like survival or unarmed aren't the best, and also you have some overlap in the skills like with barter and speech. However, it's way easier leveling up and getting skill points in new vegas, so putting skill points in the "wrong" skill doesn't mean you're fucked

There is a clear shift in design from fallout 1 and 2. Those were closer to tabletop campaigns, not only in gameplay, but in general how everything was built. It was just "you have a overarching goal, you're trying to reach it, and then just stuff happens on the journey". Even after the switch it was still a "figure it out by your own" type of situation, in fallout new vegas you're ordered around more often, I don't feel it really carries that fantasy as hard as 1 and 2 did.

In 1 and 2 the map was grand, you literally traveled across half the united states. Whenever you traveled across the map the calendar was front and center to just give you a perspective on how big the journey was. But new vegas is 3d, you can't make a map the size of the united states and for it to be fun and also not be 2 quadrillion hours long. Everything is smaller, not only the maps, but the actual settlements are smaller.

Still, it's admirable that the story is as good as it is given all of those problems and difficulties, I don't think they could have done a much better job than they did. They try sidestepping most of these problems. And while they're mostly successful, they still very much feel like sidesteps.

For the scale problem, they just set the entire game around one big battle that happens at the end of the game, the NCR settlements are smaller because they have yet to fully stablish. Caesar legion, while strong, they're kinda dumb and don't have much influence over that inmediate region, for other factions like the brotherhood of steal we've seen much bigger settlements in past games

The game is very much about war. Not about the consequences of war like 1 and 2, but an actual ongoing conflict. There isn't as much back and forth between the different factions because they're meant to be isolated and also enemies with everyone else. The whole game is checking out differnet factikons and kinda learning what their motivations and ideology is.

Still, new vegas kinda places the user as the role of an observer, yes, we're still VERY influential, but when compared to a game like disco elysium, it doesn't really try to explain the nuances and small intricacies of each train of thought and ideology. Instead, it tries simulating and speculating what ideologies would form in a world like the one of fallout, there are familiar ideologies but also some that aren't really that present irl, like the religious technocracy of the brotherhood of steel.

Still, I feel like if they had full control of the gameplay and the base game they would have been able to do a lot more with the plot, the story it's still very much limited by the gameplay and some of the design decisions

they did the best they could in that situation. Honestly I wish they had never done the jump to 3d. Placed in B rank, equal to fallout 2

peak

hylics is a really strange indie rpgmaker game where every single texture and model in the game was created by creating clay models IRL and then digitalizing it.

This game at a graphical level is just fucking amazing, the claynimation gives everything a fairly unique look, but still, there is a lot of claynimation and like almost nothing looks like hylics, that is because hylics enemies and general setting is really abstract, no living being has a human shape, no environment looks like a landscape you would see irl, the backgrounds are surreal and the colors striking. The hand animations when you cast a spell are so surreal and cool, it's just the zenith of visuals in videogames really

now in terms of gameplay, it's surprisingly good, in hylics (technically until the very end of the game) has no xp system or levelups, which allows the dev to kinda know exactly what resources you're going to have at any given point in the game, allowing them to craft really tight fights where there are often not that many solutions to each combat, making them small puzzles that feel really good to solve.

Honestly I don't know if this is the first game to have turn based combat like this, but it for sure has become slightly more popular in recent times, in many ways the combat systems of games like fear and hunger and felvidek feel very much inspired by hylics (tbf felvidek is entirerily inspired by hylics)

There isn't as much of a plot but there are for sure some themes that the game touches. In general hylics is the complete contrary to every other rpg released prior to hylics, it's agressively avant garde and kinda criticizes and makes innovative use of a lot of the tropes of the genre (such as death/respawn or xp)

easy S rank, btw hylics 2 is even better and hylics 3 has been confirmed to be in developement.

q.u.q

feels a bit aimless

q.u.q is a short renpy visual novel like the ones you would find on itch.io (not saying this as a negative), it has really cool art and sound design, but the actual story leaves a little bit to be desired

it's just tries doing too much and it isn't too consistent in what is trying to say, feels a little bit unfocused at times. The atmosphere and tone is really serious but then you also have a lot of comedy which isn't bad by itself, but honestly for me it didn't really land, the story is very abstract and confusing, if it was trying to say something (which it def was) I honestly didn't really get it

there are also a lot of endings, however, they literally manually deleted the "skip seen dialogue until choice" that literally comes defualt with this engine, I feel they just wanted to clean the UI up?, still it makes seeing all the endings really tedious

idk it's fine art is good, placed in b tier

killer7

this game is weird. This is the only game i've played from suda51, apparently all their games are this strange but this is the only one I have tried

killer7 is kinda like a rail shooter?, the gameplay consists of walking around corridors and then a enemy appears so you switch to this first person perspective and then you shoot the enemies like if you were playing time crisis. Unlike rail shooters you do have control on if you want to move forward or backwards, and also there are intersections

The graphics are very unique, not only in the actual very stylized, polygonal models and it's original character design. But also in the camera angles it chooses, like I don't think i've ever seen a game that shows walking from the perspective of the floor

however, this makes the game kinda disorienting and generally hard to control, it's such a unique concept for the gameplay that i'm just not used to it so it did resist me for a lot of the playthrough

Outside shooting, there is also a lot of puzzles, these are generally not too confusing or hard, but the enemies do respawn so it feels kinda punishing to not understand a puzzle first try, but look, I can't even be mad at that, anything as experimental and unique as this is bound to have a few misses

the game sounds great, and i'm not talking about the OST here (which is also cool), I mean the sound effects, they are actually REALLY good sound effects. They're so fat and noticeable, they don't fade into teh background like in many other games, but they take front stage

about the plot, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, stuff happens I guess (like really, killer7 is generally a hard videogame to understand, like, I kinda understand the gist of it and the broader strokes, but like the meaning and stuff of everything is kinda hard to get unless you REALLY stop and think about it for a few weeks, it's probably like really well crafted like everything else in the game, but I just haven't really put the effort in to really internalize it?)

hylics was also a very experimental game, and while I said that game's goal is kinda to do criticize and subvert a lot of the tropes of the genre and videogames in general, I don't think that applies to killer7. I think suda51 just doesn't care, that they just do whatever they want and feels it's right without really comparing itself to the rest of the industry, he's on a totally different path than any other developer (saying this as a positive thing)

also shoutout to susie sumner best character in the game

so basically, this game is painful to play at times, confusing, but god it's a good videogame, I feel playing killer7 is such a unique experience that I don't think I would change anything from it. I once saw a comment online of this game that said "If all games were like Killer7, video games would be horrible. 5 Stars" and honestly agree, banger game but please don't make me ever play another game like killer7

Underhero (Droppped)

This is a paper mario inspired indie RPG, problem is, I don't like paper mario. (In fact I already talked about it in this thread). I got to the jungle underwater maze before I just decided to drop this game, playing it felt like a drag

Underhero is a game where you play as a regular enemy in the last area of a videogame, except that you manage to kill the hero, which wasn't supposed to happen, so your goal is to go back to each zone and return the special badge to each boss, while leveling up and becoming stronger to do a coup. How this turns out later I do not know as I haven't finished the game

The gameplay is very much like paper mario, there is platforming, there is quirky combat and each level up you can upgrade one of three stats of your character, unlike msot rpgs where all your stats level up and you gain a skill or two. This game also operates with very low numbers, something that paper mario did (so like, doing 20 damage to a enemy is A LOT)

the combat feels convoluted, it's real time turn based combat (so think like chrono trigger or ff7) with paper mario type dodges. Also if you're low on energy you can't do any action. Combat has the following commands:

Attack (sword, melee)
Attack (Slingshot, range, you need to aim the slingshot)
Attack (Hammer, melee, slow and consumes more energy but deals more damage)
Dodge (Jump)
Dodge (Duck)
Block (Shield, can be used as a parry, however the shield has durability and you may need to repair it if it breaks)
Talk with the enemy
Bribe the enemy
Rush mode
Use potion

and again, all of that is in real time while you also read and dodge the enemy. It feels like it took the general criticism of rpgs that combat feels boring as you're just menuing all day and it took it to heart, so it's just throwing everything at the wall so you're engaged, in many ways combat feels like a tiktok video with subway surfers at the bottom, but man, I just fail to see how adding more mechanics and "complexity" to the combat really improves the experience. Combat feels very messy, and that is a feeling I dislike. Also in general I just don't like paper mario type combat please give me rpgs where you spend 20 minutes per turn just thinking shoutout to chained echoes

still, the combat is manageable. Leveling up system feels ok in this context as the progress is made by the enemies getting more complex, not necessarily by your character becoming stronger. Tho I feel the damage upgrade kinda overshadows the HP and energy upgrades.

Still, combat would not be enough for me to drop it, what really kills me is the level design. First of all, the game feels like a massive laberynth. Like the second area of the manor was already pretty annoying with all the backtracking and the occasional fetch quest, but the jungle was just awful.

The second problem I have with the general level design is how saving works in this game. First of all, you can only save at saving stations, this is fine, a lot of games do this, it's a good way to control the pace of the game. Problem is when every saving station is like 40 minutes apart from each other. Like really, this game forces you to make long play sessions because there is only like 1 or 2 savespots per zone. At least in fear and hunger it was justified due to it being a survival horror and being very cruel, but on a fucking paper mario inspired game?, let me save the game please

Also, you need to unlock the savestations with gold coins??????????????????? I never had the problem where I didn't have the money to pay a save station, but I just imagine having made like a lot of progress, finally getting a new save spot, you're ready to save and close the game and the game just forces you to keep playing because you spent all of the gold coins in other stuff, that's just AWFUL design, I don't know why even have a mechanic like this

overhyped and overhated when in reality it's just kinda mid

this anime became hyper popular when the fairly funny OP was revealed and everyone lost their SHIT, and then the anime came out and it did not live up to expectations

the anime is about this deer girl that goes to a japanese high school and then stuff just happens. It's a very absurd, non-sensical comedy anime, there is no clear end goal or anything (which is fairly standard with this type of anime).

While there are many other absurdist anime, shikanoko is fairly different from them, first of all, I would say the gags often last fairly long when compared to other animes, and it's also full of pop culture references, this is probably the thing I like less about this anime, it doesn't really feel it has an identity by itself, in order for it to be funny it needs to rely on a lot of other already existing anime and videogames, a lot of the time the joke is "haha the funny deer anime mentioned dark souls" and idk I just didn't enjoy it that much

still, I don't think it's a bad anime by any means, so C tier.

Matilda

welcome to my favourite segment of this thread, where I overanalyze movies made for children and that I'm in no way the target demographic of!

Matilda is a movie about this girl (matilda) who lives in a abusive housing environment, gets sent to a abusive school, and she develops telekinesis that she uses to turn things around

My problem with this movie is that honestly I don't know what is the message of this movie, because a lot of things matilda does and the movie showcases as righteous are kinda fucked in general. First of all, she lives as I said in a abusive family, really bad environment for her, yet the police and social services are villanaized, the school is fucked with constant child abuse but like calling the police isn't really considered either, mainly because the violence is shown as so silly and cartoonish that who would ever think that it's thad bad of a thing!

The way matilda solves is with telekinesis, the way she manages to wake this powers up is by getting verbally abused, so yeah, you've heard that right, getting abused just means you're closer to getting your superpowers!!! hooray!!!, I don't know man I don't know how to feel about this, it's really fucked up when you think about it.

Matilda takes things into her own and just starts breaking the law constantly, in fact, she directly obstructs the police investigation that would directly benefit her. The way she solves her school problem is by literally beating the fuck up of her teacher, like jesus, it's actually kinda ruthless. I'm serious when I say that oldboy has a more respectful portrayal of violence, revenge and justice than this movie. At least dae-su drops the knife at the start of that iconic corridor fight scene to indicate he wasn't trying to kill anyone, same with asking for a blood transplant for the guy he had just beat up, but matilda?, matilda could commit murder and she wouldn't care

The way she solves her family problem is again by taking it into her own hands, she kinda somehow obtains adoption papers than then she makes her family sign in a way that I'm pretty sure it's not legal

how the fuck are the movies I watch now are like "violence is a curse on earth that only produces more violence and death and look at how awful war and conflict is look at the destruction this type of atitude creates" and then kids movies are "YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH GO MURDER YOUR TEACHER GO FIGHT THE POLICE GO DO VIOLENCE VIOLENCE IS COOL AND FUNNY AND THE BEST SOLUUTION"

what the fuck was this movie, D tier

1 is eh, the 2nd one is the cult classic
They can be watched independent of one another. The antagonists come back from 1st, but apart from them having established history with the same person by "coincidence", there is absolutely nothing important missed from the prequel.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

mixed thoughts

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind isn't exactly a romance movie, it's more a breakup movie, two people meet, start dating, and after a while they decide to get a operation that removes each other from their mind, re-experiencing the memories together one last time before they disappear. This is a really good concept for the movie, my problem is when it starts going off rail

This is still a american romance movie released in 2004, and there are certain tropes of this genre in this specific time period that I just despise, they can't just have the movie be the romance itself terminating and visualizing everything with the extra context that it has ended, they have to introduce a third party that maliciously tries to steal the girl because no hollywood romance can be complete without sexual harassment. To be fair to this movie, this isn't a case where the protagonist is the asshole, they are probably the best character and the most reasonable in the movie, but man, it sucks because I think it kinda drags down the premise

I would have loved the movie just commit to that initial premise, for it to be a movie closer to something like 5cm per second, but that just cant be. It kinda devolves into a more toxic drama that I just didn't care that much for. The ending was eh and honestly it didn't make me feel that much

however, I have to say the movie is amazing at a visual level, and in general I think the montage segment that it has are amazing, like the bird scene, but they're bundled in a package I just don't really like that much in full

Placed in C rank

edit: also, I find it funny that for a title as long and abstract as that one they ACTUALLY say it in the movie that was sick as fuck I was like YOOOOOOOOOOOOO in that scene

No More Heroes

----------

high highs but low lows

No more heroes is a suda51 game where you play as a (loser) otaku who is also a hitman and tries to climb the ranks in a hitman organization by killing everyone who is above them. The game is very fun

I heard people complain about vampire survivors saying that it just didn't feel right that it tricked your brain in that way to produce adrenaline and dopamine, same thing was kinda said for balatro, but honestly, no more heroes did the same things.

No more heroes is a power fantasy, you get into a mission, you basically kill everyone in 1-3 slices and it's gory and fast and whenever you kill someone literally a slot machine plays that give you random effect than then allows you to create even more chaos and destruction

However, the bosses are NOT like that and I think they're by far the worst part of the game, bosses are very similar to how bosses are in other games, they're harder than most regular enemies by a mile and you need to think and play more tactically, I did not like having to slow down so much for the bosses, thought it killed the pace

The actual plot is basically nonexistent, there IS a plot dont get me wrong but like, who cares, we're here for the blood

Another complaint I have about the game is that I wish there would have been more variety in the environments and stuff, some levels were very boring, being made of a single reused zone or one that was just a concrete corridor.

Also, you need money to unlock the main missions, and it's very much possible to have made all of the missions and not have enough money to buy the mission + the upgrades, so you do need to farm, that part also sucked

This game is also really funny?, like it's just very silly and doesn't take itself seriously at all and it's just enjoyed it a lot

enjoyed the game, A rank

Her

They made a movie about character.ai in 2013

This movie is about a guy that goes through a divorce and starts dating a computer OS, as this one can mimic human conversation. The movie takes place in the near future (the futuristic year of 2025, i'm not kidding) and it's actually so fucking good

This is (for me) a GOOD romance movie, in many others that were requested here I complained about how the relationship depicted were toxic or really didn't respect women that much, that there is a kinda like a stereotype of the ideal way of living that it feels most american romances need to end up on, that they rely on third persons adding drama to give the movie a little bit of meat but this movie is absolutely not like that.

This movie presents you with a idea and COMMITS to it, and in the process of telling you the emotionally charged love story they also explore very complex topics and ideas

One of the ideas this movie covers is kinda how we picture romance. When we think of romance we think of this perfect situation where feelings are the only thing that matters and not even geographical location or social standing or a economic situation can set a stop to it, that these are just barriers to be broken, but real life isn't like this

Sure, you may start dating on love alone, but to make that last, that needs a entirerily different set of conditions, specially in a marriage. There are obligations and you both need to agree on a vision for the future and there may need to be sacrifices. In reality, the answer to "would you love me if I were a worm" would be no, because a worm can't offer me what I need, it doesn't matter how much you love the worm

In many ways it's like a long distance relationship, or even something like a discord relationship. You may be happy reading the other person messeges (like the protagonist, who was VERY happy and honestly became a better human being because of it), but you can't really get serious with that person can you?, and if you can't go serious with that person, then you're just playing, but we as humans want to believe we are going serious when we aren't

this is captured on that one scene close not too far into the movie where the protagonist goes in a date with a real girl, date goes fantastic, but then it just doesn't manifest into anything because the protagonist wasn't really willing to put in the effort to make the relationship work, then he goes home, and talks to the AI in a similar way they did to the girl, but this time, the AI doesn't require the relationship to "work", the AI will be good with or without the guy, they're willing to keep up the RP forever.

But I don't think it's that fair to shame the protagonist o nthis, they were in a emotionally weak spot, and then suddenly a voice started tellimg them EXACTLY all what they wanted to hear, because the AI doesn't act like a human being, it acts how we want humans to act, but a real person would NEVER behave in the way it behaves, it's a romanticized version of ourselves.

Not only that but we're in the near future, this society has different ethics, morality and values than us. All of the characters shown in the movie seem like high class individuals too, it's a very different world to the one we live in, and it just so happens that dating an AI seems to be kinda normalized, of course there will be people that will criticize it like we do now internet relationships and stuff but everyone understands this is just something that happens under the society that we live in and how easy it is to fall into that

Now, the movie at a visual level is fucking amazing. The future (again, I remind you, 2025), is shown as very clean, very white, kinda like how we picture modern house but kinda extrapolated to the whole city, it's big and metropolitan but it's quiet. To contrast this, the progagonist wears these bright colored shirts that really contrasts the environments, they use color SO well in this movie

I love this movie placed in S tier

also, said it a lot of times, narrative focused games that aren't absurdly long, exceptions if I have already completed the game or if I just didn't really know what I was getting into before starting the game (or if it's axispraxis they got the pass), but yeah, look at the tier list, games like metal gear, space for the unbound, until then, fallout, thumaturge, that sort of stuff

I do narrative games because that's what I have most to talk about, I don't have as much to say about gameplay design and stuff like that, so if you recommend a game that relies entirerily on gameplay, I just don't have much to say about it

The Hunger Games

ngl I enjoyed it more than I thought

read and heard many negative opinions of this movie. The original teen dystopia, extremely angsty and has awful worldbuilding and plotholes and whatever, and while most of that is true, after watching it, I just think it was kinda boring? Like, yeah it had plotholes and bad worldbuilding, but that didn't really detract from my enjoyement, and for the rest, the movie doesn't really do anything that badly, it just does surprisingly little

Everyone knows what the hunger games is so i'm skipping explaining that. Tho I will say that the first half of the movie hypes you for well, the hunger games, telling you about how important sponsors are and whatever, and when the hunger games comes, it's surprisingly calm?. Like man, they won by camping, she could have died 40 different times but she just made friends and AFKd the whole match.

The love triangle is there but like, they don't do that much with it, the protagonist kinda just seems apathetic torwards it

Like really, first half of the movie is hyping you up, second half is just evil yuru camp. Just camping and talking but like this time there is supposed to be death

placed in C tier, don't think I will be watching the sequels

comedy spy movie, same director as airplane. Doesn't try to have a complex plot or really do much, just be funny, which it is. Comedy is extremely absurdist, a lot of it being funny because of the unexpected. It has a really high density of jokes, it's hard to see like more than 30 seconds witohut a gag

I really don't think I have much more I can say about this movie other than watching it with people definitively improved the experience

Good movie

This is a brazilian movie, written by the guy who did city of god. The movie is about the police force in rio de janeiro. It is a very good movie

A lot of the focus on the movie is showing police brutality and trying to find the origins of that problem, while at the same time humanizing the criminals. It raises fairly interesting points, one of it how the methodoloy for doing polcie work is actually not completely unified and that every member can kinda do what they want in their own case. The movie shows this by comparing two very different members of the police force, while they had the same job, they acted in different ways which can create problems.

One character in this movie actually studied law, as they assumed that in order to properly enforce law you need to understand law, something that couldn't be further from the reality, which again shows another big problem in the system, one that has also gone to full swing with the protests in america this last few years, and that is "how the fuck does a lawyer need to study way more than a policeman when they really have the same job of protecting and enforcing the law"

I also found interesting a scene late in the movie that showed a little bit of the internal training of the police, one where they had to form a formation. In the police they basically do military training with a lot of physical punishment and the such, that makes sense for a war, where you go to kill people, but for a cop, it can be a problem, because that type of training makes you apathetic to violence, it normalizes it. In the military is normal to beat each other up, but doing the same thing for the civilian population is very bad

I enjoyed this movie, A rank

Jane Austen’s Mafia!

Another comedy movie by the director of top secret and airplane, a bit worse than those tho

This movie is very much a parody of the godfather, the troubled life of the son of a important mafia family and their eventual ascent to power. The plot itself doesn't really do anything too interesting, it's mainly a absurdist comedy movie with not that much of a meaning behind it, which I can get behind

The actual comedy is fairly different from airplane and top secrets, in many ways it seems more standard, more like what we would start seeing a lot in the early 2000. The comedy in many ways it's a lot more rude and scatological than their previous movies, it also features a lot of references, to the godfather mainly, but there are a few others, like forrest gump, this is funny at the moment but I feel relying on this type of joke makes the movie less unique

When compared to top secret, the difference is quite clear, mafia is quite literally the godfather while top secret is a spy movie, not like a james bond parody.

However, the non scatological non reference jokes are funny, so I still enjoyed watching the movie

In general I enjoyed but eh could have been better, placed in C rank

Everything Everywhere All At One

just woke up and I watches this movie a while back now sooooo

This movie is about timelines, all the different ones than there are, jumping between universe and universe to achieve a certain goal. The movie is actually very experimental and I really enjoyed it

Concepts of timelines isn't new by any means, however, the way this tackles it feels both the most realistic and most unique. In theory there is a timeline for every single possibility, and that is actually shown in the movie, there are certain universes than doesn't even make sense but that still exist, mainly because if there are infinite timelines, one is bound to be like that, anything that you can imagine, there is a timeline for that

It's actually very emotional which is actually not something you expect reading the movie synopsis or seeing the trailer, and the way the emotional scenes are delivered (the rocks scene), again, really fucking unique. I guess that having seen so much weird stuff upon that point makes you more open to even more weird stuf

I don't know, I really enjoyed it, placed in A rank
