Avatar: the last aribenderunpopular opinion alert!!! this felt ass ngl (note, only seen season 1, as I don't plan on watching the rest)
Avatar the last airbender is a western anime produced by nickelodeon about the story of four nations, you know the meme "Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked", and then the avatar who is also the last airbender (shocking I know) needs to learn to master all elements so he can stop the war
This is an episodic series, however, even if I don't like this style of storytelling, they actually did a damn good job at it, my problem with this type of series is that they're often formulaic, that there isn't much plot developement, that there really isn't much of a pace to the anime since you can basically watch it in any order, this isn't the case in avatar, the first and final 5 episodes flow so, so well into each other that it truly feels great
now, there are still a few episodes that does feel like filler, like the fortune-telling episode, but that isn't really my biggest complaint, my problems with the series is more that it feels tone deaf at times
This is a nickelodeon show, this was aired for children, thing is, this series truly does seem like it wants to go into some deeper, more heavy topics, but every time there is a interesting speech or anything really interesting, they often cut it out with a dumb gag to keep the tone light, this is not the worst thing ever but it's annoying
The real problem here are the characters. The situation is dire, you're on a big war, that could have (and has already had) awful, awful consequences, due to chance you find the avatar, the only person that can save it, but they currently are weak (compared to what they should be), this is a TENSE situation, this is stressful, this is awful for everyone involved, there is no fun be found here, so why are the characters so damn moody?
like really, the thing that actually just kills me of avatar is how the characters would literally just let the world die for the stupidest reason you've heard, the ammount of times they turn of each other for random bs is astounding, "ohhhh I randomly got a bf and now i'm like turning on each other for this guy I literally met 30 minutes ago", "after 20 episodes of traveling turns out that the instructor is rude to women so we're not going to have the avatar do the training they need to save the world", at the end, due to plot armor they do return and save the situation
(honestly that one I mentioned was such bullshit turns out that randomly the grandma of one of the protagonist was supposed be married to the instructor and due to seeing the family trinket she was wearing his heart softened up like are you fucking kidding me?, you would let the world DIE before being nice to women but seeing that she's the granddaughter of the girl that stood him up at like a wedding is the thing to soften him up??????)It's just, I don't feel they really acknowledge the situation at all, in chapter 3, aang discovers his whole nation is dead, so also like all his family and friends and everyone that he ever loved or even met, and not only that but they were muredred, so katara, does a speech, where she basically goes "I went through a similar situation when my family died, but hey!, you're better off than I was back then, as you still have a family, us". Like, there is no point in comparasion of what aang is just living through to what she lived through, the worst part is that the speech works and it's just such an awful scene god it's bad
so if the characters often have plot armor, they don't even acknowledge the plot as anything to be taken seriously, every time they're going to do anything intersting they cut it out with a gag, and there are literally filler episodes, what's the point of the show?, really, if even the characters don't give a shit, why should I give a shit?
I don't know man, I don't like it, also note I haven't watched it as a kid this was my first impression.
