Monthly Beatmapping Contest: November 2023

by pishifat, RandomeLoL

Another month passes, and another contest arrives! See if you have what it takes to join the mapping elites, and witness the results of the previous contest!

You don't need many brain cells to comprehend what the Monthly Beatmapping Contest (MBC) is. This month is all about osu! and osu!mania, including...

Navigate to whichever topic you're interested in above (or flex your scrolling muscles as needed).

Previous contest results

osu! results

61 submissions were reviewed by our screening crew, 15 of which were evaluated by a separate judging panel!

See the full results here.

User Beatmap Placement Badge prize Contest points
acnozei ginkiha feat. TEA - Haruka 1st + Screener's pick +4 (5 total)
phyr Aiobahn - Towa no Utage (w/ YUC'e) 2nd +2 (4 total)
LeCandy Redside - Sidequest 3rd - +1 (1 total)
Lasse ABSOLUTE CASTAWAY - Musubime Screener's pick - +1 (1 total)

To start, acnozei and Lasse completely dominated the screening phase! Each of their maps were praised equally, yet both were far ahead of the next map in line, earning the mappers a single contest point towards their future Elite Mapper titles.

acnozei's talent only continued to impress, earning them the top spot in the judging panel and 3 more contest points! phyr and LeCandy were close behind, earning 2 and 1 contest points respectively.

osu!mania results

50 piano mashers gave their keyboards a break and explored the editor this month. 10 of them were awesome enough to pass the screening phase, and a separate judging panel thoroughly investigated the entries to determine who wears the crown.

See the full results here.

After submitting maps to the Monthly Beatmapping Contest 10 times throughout 2020 and 2021, Lott casually dropped into the first iteration of 2023's MBC with a landslide winning. It's about time, so congrats!

hemoo's runner-up submission is impressive in its own right too! The screening crew almost universally praised their entry, boosting hemoo's contest points total to match Lott's.

Ooooooooookay. That's enough about the past — let's talk about this month's contest!

Game modes

This month's contest is open to osu! and osu!mania mappers.

Next month's contest will feature osu!taiko and osu!catch, including results for October's MBC.

Timeline

  • Beatmapping (3 weeks): Contest is announced and beatmappers create their entries.
  • Screening (1.5 weeks): Entries are evaluated by experienced beatmappers. If there aren't many entries, this will be skipped in favour of a longer judging period.
  • Judging (1.5 weeks): Top entries from screening are judged in detail by a different crew of experienced beatmappers.
  • Rewards (~2 months from now): Winners are announced at the start of another MBC.

Beatmapping

Limitation/theme

Each MBC includes a different way to keep mappers on their toes. This limitation/theme is one of the judging categories, so try to implement it in an interesting way!

If you're confused about how these work, feel free to ask for clarification in the comments, or send a message to pishifat (for osu!) or RandomeLoL (for osu!mania).

osu!

This month's osu! limitation focuses on rhythm: there must be a 1 beat (or longer) gap within every 2 bars of music.

For example, there are 2 bars of music between these circles:

So this would be an acceptable rhythm:

And this wouldn't:

osu!mania

If you're proficient in LN and normal note layering, this month's contest is for you.

The golden ratio has been a staple in artistic mediums for centuries. It's the closest we can come to a measure for perfection, and perfection is exactly what you'll be aiming for while mapping.

This month's theme for osu!mania: the ratio of normal notes to long notes (or vice versa) should be as close as possible to the golden ratio.

This is best explained with an example. These numbers...

...divide to either ~1.49 (1898/1270) or ~0.67 (1270/1898). The golden ratio is ~1.618, so to fit with the contest's theme, the map should be balanced to have more long notes or fewer normal notes.

The closer to perfection (the golden ratio) your note count ratio is, the better you'll score in the theme category! So aim to be as close as possible to that nonsensical number.

Songs

Any song listed on osu!'s Featured Artist listing is eligible for this contest. Cutting songs is allowed too!

Rewards

The Monthly Beatmapping Contest rewards users with contest points based on their placements:

  • Winner: 2 points
  • Runner-up: 1 point
  • Screening crew's #1 pick: 1 point

These numbers may vary depending on how many submissions the contest receives. Check the wiki article for details.

Contest points reward users at certain thresholds:

  • Profile badges are attainable at 2, 4, and 6 points each. The badges are tiered, meaning each new badge will replace the previous one!
  • Elite Mapper user title is attainable at 6 points.

Additionally, a Mappers' Guild keychain is optionally rewarded to the winner of each month's contest. Its design is based on your beatmap!

Rules

  • Submissions must follow the month's beatmapping limitation/theme:
    • osu!: there must be a 1 beat (or longer) gap within every 2 bars of music.
    • osu!mania: the ratio of normal notes to long notes (or vice versa) should be as close as possible to the golden ratio.
  • Submissions must be a single difficulty from one of the month's selected songs.
  • Submissions must be in .osz format.
  • Submissions must NOT be uploaded to the osu! website until after the contest's results are finalised.
  • Submissions must abide by the ranking criteria.
  • Your submission must be solely made by you. Collaborations are not allowed for this contest!

Note that all submissions will be anonymised before they're reviewed by screeners/judges to avoid bias.

Once the perfect beatmap is in your editor, export it and plop it onto one of these pages:

You have until December 4th to submit your entry!

result when

do bars in std have to start at the barline, or does the rule apply for any two points in time 2 or more bars in length apart?

MrRainbowDoge nominomu

starting at the first timing point OR starting at the first note i think

does that mean we need exact one gap every 2 bars, or more than one gap every 2 bars is also acceptable?

MrRainbowDoge fanzhen0019

any is acceptable

im sad for the mania mappers, like they need to do math to map now 😭

Lott amongusrtx30080

me adding 0.7392157083 LNs to make the ratio perfectly match phi:

LeCandy's Redside - Sidequest 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

there's so many ways to cheese the standard limitation that it's genius. the variety is top-notch! and not to mention, it's actually just a good theme? i genuinely cant wait to map 5 seconds of a song, ty to everyone behind this.

yey

does it apply to spinner?

btw, I also immediately thought about this, but based on the pictures attached above, I conclude that “nothing should be” during this period. No spinners, no sliders, no circles

are you able to have a full beat slider for the gap or does there have to be no objects between the gap?
judging by the picture given i guess not but it wouldn't hurt to make sure.

Shikoruto epicool

btw, I also immediately thought about this, but based on the pictures attached above, I conclude that “nothing should be” during this period. No spinners, no sliders, no circles

so, about the mania's theme
should the ratio be [normal:ln] or [ln:normal]?
or are they both okay?

RandomeLoL GDBlack

Both are okay! In practice, the ratio closest to the number required will be the one to be judged, so the mapper's get to choose how to divide it basically.

standard except the ranking criteria was made by the taiko community

SilentWuffer SilentWuffer

i unironically hope one of the standard judges has experience in taiko too

Whoever maps a song with a bpm lower than 100 in STD, mad respect, and good luck oh my

Omg guys 4/6 to elite mapper and i still cant rank a map😭

thats actually wild wtf

it's 3am in the morning again for me

So abuse 300bpm+ songs for std?

pishifat Kojio

you probably won't score too well in the limitation's judge category but it's doable lol

Kojio pishifat

damn

unlucky

I am a bit confused with the limitation for standard.
As I understand it, the rule «there must be a 1 beat (or longer) gap within every 2 bars of music.» means, that 1 beat gap would be in any section between any 2 long bars. Is my interpretation correct? (because the other way to understand it accord the example, must be keeping only 1beat just before the next long bar... and that will be pretty too much annoying at mapping, imho hahahah).
Thanks in advance :3
edit: it feels as a rule against infinite streams/spamming :P

pishifat ErunamoJAZZ

let's assume 4/4 for simplicity: if you put a full beat gap somewhere, you need another full beat gap within the next 8 beats. does that answer the question?

ErunamoJAZZ pishifat

yes pishidad, arigatou <3
