Twin Trials - Beatmapping Phase

by pishifat

Craving to prove your unmatched beatmapping prowess? This multi-phase contest is open to all game modes, so it might be exactly what you're looking for!

How do you define a classic beatmap?

Back in the day, Kuba Oms - My Love was bundled with every new installation of osu!. It was an experience shared by a whole generation of circle clickers, turning it into an undoubted classic.

In 2019, My Love was retired. Hide and Seek, Reaction, and Birdsong took its place, amassing tens of millions of plays from new players along the way. All of these beatmaps feature one artist: James Landino, the musician responsible for a modern generation of classic beatmaps.

Twin Trials is here to usher a new creation into the realm of classics.

Your task: find a partner and design a full difficulty spread (Easy/Normal/Hard/Insane/Expert) for any of the 5 new custom-made songs by James Landino.

The winning beatmap (from the game mode with the highest submission count) will be used as the base for the storyboarding phase. If the winning beatmapping duo and storyboarding duo agree to it, their creations will be combined and bundled with new installations of osu!(lazer).

Let's break everything down.

Schedule

This contest is split into two phases: beatmapping and storyboarding.

Rules

Believe it or not, contests have rules.

These rules only apply to the beatmapping phase. The storyboarding phase will have a separate set of rules.

  • Submission must include FIVE DIFFICULTIES: Easy, Normal, Hard, Insane, and Expert. Any game mode is acceptable!
  • Submission must use one of the selected songs by James Landino.
  • Submission must be in .osz format.
  • osu!mania beatmaps must be 4K or 7K. Other key modes are not competitive enough for this contest.
  • Beatmaps should abide by the ranking criteria. While we can be forgiving for mistakes, submissions that could not be ranked without major changes will be disqualified.
  • Team name and members must be confirmed through this form.
    • If your country does not support Google Forms, send pishifat a message.
    • Teams must have 2 members. No more, no less.
  • Submissions must not be publicly revealed until after the judging phase ends.
  • Submissions must not be Qualified until after the community vote ends.
  • Each team cannot create more than one submission per game mode.
  • A user cannot participate in more than one team per game mode.

After you've read these rules found your mapping partner, submit your team name and member list to this form. Once confirmed, your team will be published on the Twin Trials contest wiki page!

Prizes

The beatmapping phase of this contest is essentially four simultaneously running contests — one per game mode. That said, each mode has its own set of prizes!

Mapping judge panel

Placing Prize(s)
Gold crown 6 months of osu!supporter, Elite Mapper contest points, Mappers' Pick profile badge
Silver crown 4 months of osu!supporter, Elite Mapper contest points
Bronze crown 2 months of osu!supporter, Elite Mapper contest points

As mentioned earlier, the winning beatmap (from the game mode with the highest submission count) will be used as the base for the storyboarding phase. If the winning mappers and storyboarders agree to combine their creations, their collaboration will be bundled with new installations of osu!(lazer).

Community Vote

Top beatmaps will be published for a community vote and featured in 5 lazer playlists per mode (one per difficulty level). At this time, teams may reveal their beatmaps to the public.

To participate in the community vote for each game mode, you will need to play through any of the relevant playlists on lazer. This ensures anyone voting has actually considered all of the options!

Placing Prize(s)
Gold crown 4 months of osu!supporter, Community Pick profile badge
Silver crown 2 months of osu!supporter

Once the playlists are closed, whoever has the highest score on each leaderboard for each game mode will receive a minor prize too:

  • Easy/Normal/Hard/Insane playlist leaders: 1 month of osu!supporter each
  • Expert playlist leader: 1 month of osu!supporter + Twin Trials Champion profile badge

Once your beatmap is ready, head to the contest listing for the mode you'd dedicate your life to:

For the most up-to-date info about the contest (including teams and contest status), keep the Twin Trials contest wiki page bookmarked!

question - if multiple modes map the same song, can one mapset hold all diffs of all modes?

Previously h3oCharles

think that no

anyone has lyrics for Dreaming?

h3oCharles h3oCharles

omg right as i said that i found the bandcamp listing https://raredrop.bandcamp.com/track/dreaming

When go make a few changes things about: format, voting and prizes maybe in the future, people, not only mappers but everyone take a real value about theses international contests, to me sounds a bit blatant, mentally exhausting to see same scenarios over and over again, i lost the real interest and to be honest this is a sad sensation coming for a inspired contestant.

Same but because can't map

hello, i have a few questions:

  1. can a team map multiple gamemodes in a submission?
if yes, assume we have a team with A and B as members:
  • can each member map one mode exclusively (eg. A maps std, B maps taiko)? if no, is this case acceptable: A maps std, B maps taiko, both maps mania; or does each mode needs both members contributing in it?
  • is there a limit on how many modes each team can map?
  1. is there a clear minimum requirement on how much each member has to contribute in total? (eg. if the requirement is 30% minimum, some1 has to do 30% total or more, and vice versa)

The only way to create a rankable difficulty progression in two modes while having exactly one of each difficulty is to have one mode as N/H/I/X, and the other as E.
The RC also doesn't allow excessive undermapping so no, it's impossible to make two spreads that can be considered rankable for this contest.

Lott Xinnoh

i don't really get your answer, and the structure you mentioned didn't even cross through my mind; mind elaborating what you mean?

i have a question: will there still be a winner for other modes even if the map that goes to the storyboarding process is only the one of the mode with the highest submission count?

edit: nvm the answer was written there

so, about the task: "find a partner and design a full difficulty spread (Easy/Normal/Hard/Insane/Expert) for any of the 5 new custom-made songs by James Landino."

i have a question. as a team, do we map it as:

  1. collaboration, each difficulty is collab and there will be 1 map with 5 difficulties,
  2. map separately, each person map full spread and there will be 2 map,
  3. map as a guest difficulty, so as long as it have 5 required difficulty in 1 map,
  4. map as guest difficulty, but each person map 5 difficulty, therefore there will be 10 difficulty on 1 map, or
  5. all above this, so team can use their imagination when design a map

i just want to make sure because the rule said "Each team cannot create more than one submission." (tho it kinda eliminate option 2 because there will be 2 submission)

the entire mapset has to be 5 diffs, and usually mapset host has more diffs/drain time mapped than any guest
so for example, host maps 3 diffs, guest maps 2 diffs

I'm pretty sure as long as its not option 2 or 4 its probably fine, although if one maps more than the other than obviously RC takes precedent

really cool thing to see, good luck all 👍

still can't believe the artist behind hide and seek made an among us song
