osu!(lazer) Updates: July 16, 2023

by 0x84f

Nothing's better than a brand-new osu!(lazer) update on a hot summer day.

This update is huge, but before we go on to cover the most important bits and bobs, we are contractually obligated to let you know that osu!(lazer) is the next step in osu!'s development, and you can get the quick run-down on what that means here.

Changes

  • Scores will be recalculated to ScoreV2. If you didn't know, the old scoring osu!(lazer) scoring system was scrapped and tossed aside, in favour of returning to a system widely used in tournaments. Check out this news post (or the above video) for more details on that.
  • New notification sounds. Thanks to nekodex, getting notified in-game has never sounded so good.
  • New osu!taiko hitsounds for the argon skin. Now hitting your keyboard will sound more like actual taiko drums. Resident sound designer nekodex's comments on it may interest you, so check the video above to find out if that's the case.
  • Hotkeys for 90° rotations of selections in the editor. In some parts of the world, this would be Ctrl + </> (anticlockwise/clockwise), and in others, Ctrl + ,/.. Not rebindable.
  • Skinnable retry sound and redesigned key counter. Your custom retry sounds (pause-retry-click) from existing skins will now work! If you don't like the new key counter, you can switch back to the old one in the skin layout editor (Ctrl + Shift + S). Or if you like neither, you can also just delete it entirely.
  • Gameplay bug fixes. These include fixing 1 million score being unachievable in some osu!mania maps, skin elements being flipped in osu!catch when the "Floating Fruits" mod is active, fixing animation timing for osu!taiko, and a bunch more, including bringing back a bug from osu!(stable).
  • Huge performance improvements. The details are too technical to summarise, but even peppy was excited by how substantial the optimisations are.
  • More search options at song select. These are not available for online beatmap searches yet (except for searching with quotes, which have been a thing). To help illustrate how to use these new options, take a moment to imagine the following scenarios:
    • What if you wanted to play maps of the good old Kuba Oms - My Love, but you find that searching "my love" gives all kinds of maps where "love" and "my" show up in metadata? No worries, just type "my love" in quotes.
    • But wait, what if you wanted just the original and not all of the remixes from the A Labour of Love contest? No problem, just add an exclamation point to yell at the game that it has to be My Love and nothing else: "my love"!.
    • Switching gears, what if you wanted to play along to YUC'e's sweet vocals, but were only looking for songs by different artists where YUC'e is mentioned in the title? No problem, because title=yuc'e would be all you needed.

Everything can't be covered here in one go of course, so make sure to check out the video above. If you want to look into every nook and cranny of the latest update, check out the full changelog for all the details.

What do you think? You can update to the latest version of it by opening osu!(lazer) or downloading it here.

Solace_ FunnyWolfOne

what? lazer is more optimized than the stable version

I live for osu!lazer hitsounds uhnnn

can I install both games with no interference with each other

fn0va Flowksss

yes, it does that on default

твари 200 кровных пп забрали

whala ireally like these

The new taiko hitsounds are extra good except the big katsu. It's just too loud and disgusting. And that "yoooo"... Awww, man

Komm Jerops

unfortunately I agree, sometimes it doesn't make the sound when objects are dense, but still I prefer not having the "yoooo" as you say lol

please make this actual osu now b4 i die one day

Mania works pretty good now ! kudos!

The only think I'd like to have is the ability to move the playfield haha

Because I'm not a big fan of having it dead center

I did have to change some names in order to play 4k upscroll with arrows (only switch the names of the up and down arrows + rotate the LN tail)

But performance wise, it's pretty much there

Performance improve make everything feels so smooth for this update. However opening long empty song in editor still jitter comparing to previous previous version (regression?). Not sure why.

I am playing for over 1 year now on Lazer and Linux, this update has something special, not sure if it is the Tablet driver update, but the gameplay feels way more natural now. And Performance is getting really better with every update.

Thank you for your work, Devs!

title search in quotations hmmfngh

new taiko hs are so good wtf

bruh this update made it so my tablet doesnt even work now like not even by disabling in game drivers and using otd LOL

nice job peppy

when playing on lazer my mouse sometimes stops responding for ab 1-2 seconds and i can't find a fix. my mouse is not the problem

Those new Taiko hitsounds are fantastic. Now if we'd still get finally the option to toggle kiai off, it'd be a dream come true, I'd swap to lazer right away.

all games have them, it is inevitable to make an oopsie daisy in your code at one point

Is the osu! Stable version still being updated, isn't it?

Walavouchey Sisumine

yes, but less frequently and mainly for minor maintenance changes

Oh, I see. Thank you for the information

“This is osu!, and this is the developer behind osu!” He’s not wrong, he really was behind that framed slider art piece
