Community Mentorship Program Spring 2023 Signups Now Open

by Mentorship Organization Team

The 23rd cycle of the Community Mentorship program is on its way! Get ready to delve deep into the world of mapping, modding, or storyboarding.

The Community Mentorship program serves as a place for upcoming mappers, modders, and storyboarders to develop their skills under the guidance of more experienced members in the community. If you've ever found yourself wanting to expand your current knowledge, this might just be the opportunity you need.

Over the course of a cycle, you'll have the opportunity to learn from your mentor, participate in various mentorship events (like contests), hang out with fellow mentees, and more!

If you're experienced in mapping, modding, or storyboarding, and have a desire to take those who are new under your wing, then consider joining us as a mentor! In the forum announcement and rule thread, you'll be able to apply right away. If you're only just getting started and are eager to hone your skills, then signing up as a mentee might be what you need!

For this following cycle, the timeline is as follows (all opening and closing dates start and end at midnight UTC+0):

  • Mentor signups will open on February 6th and close on February 13th.
  • Mentee signups will open on February 27th and close on March 6th.
  • The 2023 Spring cycle will run from March 6th to June 5th.

Throughout this cycle, the organization team will host various events on the Mentorship Discord server, engaging and offering events for mentees and mentors to participate in. These include feedback lobbies, mapping contests, and more! Some of our previous mapping puzzles can be found here in this thread, and previous discussions can be found here.

If any of this interests you or anyone you know, please go to our forum announcement and rules thread for more information.

We're looking forward to the mappers, modders and storyboarders of tomorrow!

Few tips to improve your application:

  1. Apply to a specific mentor to ensure they look at your application. Mentors only look at the non-specific applications if they don't like theirs.
  2. If your motivation is to rank a map, you should probably re-evaluate why you want to map. Most mentors view this motivation as shallow and ranking a map is very easy to obtain due to the very low standards required to achieve a ranked map. Mentors don't want a mentee who will quit mapping once they reach their goal of a ranked map, they want a mentee who is driven to improve beyond the bare minimum.
  3. If applying to a mentor specifically, please actually look at their maps (especially their recent ones, even if they are in the graveyard). This will give you an idea of what to expect from this mentor. Be prepared to talk about what you like or didn't like any these maps. Showing this initiative will impress the mentor. I've personally rejected many applications because they couldn't bother to spend 5 minutes looking at any of my maps, or if they did, they looked at maps from 3 years ago which aren't representative of my current mapping.
  4. DM them on discord after you apply. This gives you the chance to make an impression beyond the little information available in the application.

Remember that Mentors get dozens of applications and you should make yourself stand out. Why do you think THIS mentor can help you more than others? What are your specific goals? (and again, many Mentors look unfavorably upon the shallow "rank a map" motivation for many reasons).

These are some errors I've seen over the last 1-2 years that I've been an organizer and mentor. Any questions? Feel free to DM or comment.

oshi no ko -White

bro imagine if osu players put this kind of initiative and attention to detail into college apps or literally anything else

Fansly oshi no ko

i guess it's good practice you know
the hardest thing with those college apps is actually starting to make one so some experience is okay
