These things have existed for years and steam gets a cut of every transaction. The whole concept comes from csgo drops, these games just streamlined it.
They might remove this one because of how it spread but all the other ones are probably here to stay.

Nah there's nothing to do in the game, it's not even a game, just launch it and after some time you get steam collectibles like cs skins that you can sell on the market.
That's why so many people do it, it's like cs lootboxes/skins (which are like the proto-NFTs) but without having to actually play a game.
Basically a free money glitch.
