OLD Tier list
Let's take them step by step
If you like any of these that I personally don't, more power to you. Keep using them, but I think you should try some of the top ones too. I personally want a simple, private OOTB browser. Anything else is just extra fluff that I will probably never use.
- Librewolf(S tier): It's a Firefox fork that removed a lot of the things Mozilla added, having better default for privacy (though not perfect), adds an adblocker (UBlock Origin) by default and exposes some settings that Firefox doesn't do as well for those that really want that thing.
- Brave(A tier): They do a lot of what LibreWolf does, but behind it isn't an independent community, but rather an ad company. As a result, Brave is somewhat filled with things that are less than ideal, like their rewards program, sponsored backgrounds, web3 features, etc. You can disable these things for the moment, but things are possible to go south. As things are in the present, they seem good.
- Firefox(C tier): Standard Firefox is a conflicting mess, but for the most part, they're better than Google Chrome or other mainstream web browsers. Hardening it is a thing, but you might as well just use LibreWolf.
- Vivaldi(C tier): I haven't used it a whole lot, so I think this is a fair placement of it. It's not too high, not too low. It seems to have ad blocker built and some other features, but yeah. It seems to be made the previous CEO of Opera, which is interesting.
- Chromium(C tier): As an engine, it is really good, but with Google's stuff in it, well, it isn't that nice anymore. Ungoogled Chromium is interesting, since you have the bare engine basically. You could easily make it into a great browser, but it would require some worth, so I think C tier is good enough.
- Google Chrome(D tier): The defacto standard browser has a lot of privacy concerns. They all should be fairly obvious. I would have placed at C if it wasn't for the fact Google is in its name. Please, look into any of the other Chromium based browsers with a better privacy rep than Chrome.
- Opera & Opera GX(shit tier): You think Google is bad? Think again. Opera is partially owned by a Chinese company. Call me a western cock sucker, but I quite genuinely don't want any communistic regime to even remotely know what shit I do online. Opera is perhaps D tier level, but GX is quite literally horrible. All of these features can be implemented by extensions or a new tab. Its gamer aesthetic is honestly laughable as well. If you're that lazy to install some extensions, then go ahead I guess.
- Microsoft Edge(Worse than shit): You know, I only put this here because Microsoft is trying so hard to push this down the throat of Windows users and it is a massive piece of spyware, as expected.
If you like any of these that I personally don't, more power to you. Keep using them, but I think you should try some of the top ones too. I personally want a simple, private OOTB browser. Anything else is just extra fluff that I will probably never use.
I wanted to do another tier list, but frankly, I'm too lazy. Here's the rundown:
- Firefox and Brave are my go-tos. Firefox went up on the tier list because Mozilla needs to survive somehow. Brave is my recommendation if you want a functional yet still private browser.
- Librewolf is way lower because I don't care as much about privacy. Firefox's Strict Privacy options, alongside an adblocker, do the job well enough I believe.
- Floorp is great.
- Opera and Opera GX still sucks.
- Vivaldi is alright.
- The rest are all mid.
