I just killed one, but the only thing I had was a really soft object.

so it just died slowly, losing its movements until no more.

I feel bad.

I burned an ant by putting it on a stove
Considering their reactions, I think they can feel pain

Did you know that each year, we accidentally kill on average 2 kilograms of insects per year?

I understand why you feel bad about this, there are some reasons to feel bad about killing an ant (they are intelligent and feel pain), I asked ChatGPT:

  1. Learning Ability: Studies show that ants are capable of learning and remembering complex routes to find food. They use visual landmarks and the position of the sun to navigate.
  2. Teamwork: Ants exemplify the true spirit of cooperation. They work together to accomplish difficult tasks, such as building tunnels or carrying large pieces of food back to the nest.
  3. Caring for Offspring: Worker ants meticulously care for the eggs and larvae, ensuring they receive the right amount of food and protection. This parental care is crucial for the development of the next generation of the colony.
  4. Pain Simulation: Although it is not entirely known if ants feel pain in the same way humans do, they react to harmful stimuli in a way that suggests a defense system against damage.
  5. Memory and Decision Making: Ants possess a sophisticated nervous system that allows for memory and decision making. They can evaluate different food sources and choose the most advantageous based on quality and quantity available.

nature fundamentally runs on animals killing other animals for food. it shouldn't work like that, and yet that's how it works.
