Hell no.

Get Borderlands 1, 2, pre sequel, and 3.

Borderlands 1 is a bit of a weird one after playing all of the 4 main games. But for lore reasons it's pretty damn good and builds up to Borderlands 2.

However, if you want to skip Borderlands 1 and go straight to 2, that's perfectly okay. Borderlands 2 is probably how many people got into the series, and it's a genuinely amazing game. One of the best stories I've been graced watching, and some of the best gunplay.

Pre-sequel is "lore-heavy". Wasn't a fan of it but it's got the same gunplay as Borderlands 2, except instead of slag, there's cryo. Which... works differently in some cases. Characters in that game are also alright.

Borderlands 3 however is the outlier. Whatever gunplay Borderlands 2 got, Borderlands 3 did it much better. The story however, is not good. Not the worst story now that the movie is out, and the new tales of the borderlands, and the tiny tina's wonderlands (seriously these are the three demons that plague this series, all of them combined make Borderlands 3's story actually look like a masterpiece).

If you're cheap, you can wait for the Handsome Collection on Steam to be on a huge sale. Like actually a large sale. Typically in holiday seasons I've seen it go as low as -95% off for the entire series. Which is more than a steal.

Borderlands is one of my favorite series before 2020. Then it just kinda started shooting itself in the foot. I was going to forgive Borderlands 3 having a terrible story, but then Gearbox decided to one-up themselves and shoot themselves in the other foor for releasing whatever the hell Tiny Tina Wonderlands is. Seriously, that game just wasn't it for many people. Now I feel bad for Borderlands 3, it's not a bad game, just doesn't have a great story. If you can look past that, it's still a great game.

Seeing the track record for Gearbox also isn't good right now. Not only did they have one of the worst movies to ever release to the public, they also nearly killed Risk of Rain 2. I heard it's "playable" now, but jeez, after seeing what they did to that title after acquiring it a year or so ago, I have never been more upset at a company than ever before. The movie really was so bad that I think they decided to pull a strange marketing stunt and throw a teaser for Borderlands 4.

Yeah, apparently Borderlands 4 is releasing next year. That's crazy to me. I'm quite worried for the series because they might just destroy it for good and release an even worse story than the movie somehow. I don't think it's possible but it's Gearbox we're talking about. Hopefully they don't screw up the gunplay and learn from their mistakes from Tiny Tina Wonderlands, as we didn't really appreciate that. Hopefully they keep most of the good gunplay from both 2 and 3, and have a better story than 3. Won't be easy topping 2's story.

And knowing Gearbox, I'm hoping for too much.

Just play the first few titles. Start with Borderlands 2 if you want to have a more streamlined experience, and move from there. If you liked the lore/story, and want more, you can either go back to Borderlands 1, or even do pre-sequel. And then you can play Borderlands 3. Or if you really love the gunplay from 2, but wasn't hooked on the story as much as most people, you can just go to Borderlands 3 and see if that fancies your tea. Or you can start from the first title and see if that hits your spots. Either way you're experiencing a beloved franchise from so many people, myself including. I'd throw Borderlands 2 as one of the top 10 best games ever made simply because of how much impact it had on looter shooters, hell it probably inspired Destiny.

Oh wow, I ranted for a little too much again. Whoops.
