cool how I never attacked the thread idea whatsoever, but thats the perception I guess.

also for winny, threatening people online with a bad time is the most impotent helpless shit you can do lol (in a serious note, please find a professional to manage your anger issues)

i must've misunderstood what you've meant then;;

in that case, what did you mean by

The concept of the thread calls for [double-posting and triple-posting].

Also it's allowed in OT.
it wasnt when I got here
if [double-posting and triple-posting, on the basis of a thread's idea giving it freedom to exist] is allowed then its the dumbest idea possible, I'll make a thread where no one has interest on and will keep posting on it so it'll always be on top
...only now do i realize i would've likely misinterpreted that... i had the impression you were saying the thread idea was the dumbest idea possible, and that "i'll make a thread where no one has interest" was an implied shade at winny

at least. if i'm taking you at your word, then i would concede that my frame of perspective was pretty skewed, it's difficult to read into what people are saying. that admission doesn't really change that it must look baffling for people to misread you entirely

not trying to mess with you ;-; in any case i hope that resolves and clarifies something, though i guess that still leaves the double-posting/triple-posting observation

i still don't really read that very charitably when it would seem like such a trivial thing to point out (maybe it's just a general observation unrelated to the thread, where pointing winny out specifically was instrumental in some sense to questioning that ability to post consecutively), there would've been a few possible interpretations of that you might not have cared to project into the conversation at all

I meant that, if that rule is dead, it can be easily exploited. its not related to this thread... at all.
I tried starting a new branch of discussion, because talking online is (or at least was) a fun experience.

that's much clearer, ty ^^ having fun online and starting conversations is a fair sentiment, though something like this is probably an unfortunate choice of words/timing

hopefully winny will be fine, hopefully other people will be reasonable

The GMTs can lock the thread. I am done with OT for the foreseeable future.

EDIT: I have sent Blushing a few DMs and I've sent a report form too to the "government". I will see the replies I get and then choose how to proceed.

i think you will be left in peace, people just make reckless comments sometimes and we probably aren't in each other's heads to consider what would carry a possibility of real consequence. but i doubt they will have weight on the substance of the thread itself, and i doubt the gmt members will find reason to take issue to the point of locking it. if anything, maybe this would be locked only if it does not return to the original subject of tech and continues to be argumentative, but... that argument, if it was one, is probably already over by now

it's entirely reasonable to care and continue to invest in the thread, and i think some people who've commented here did in fact find this tech corner to be meaningful enough to ask genuine questions about what they can do with what they have or what they're looking to purchase or install. if the thread remains here, it seems likely people will bring more genuine questions and accompanying commentary on whatever events you share

i imagine half of the people on ot wouldn't care, but you don't need to appeal to all of ot ^^ and once the sarcasm and irony dies and decomposes, i have trust that people will take the thread as seriously as many do with the patatitta or dm-for-mutual review threads

that being noted, you aren't obligated to continue, and maybe you find that this is part of a pattern you cannot sustain, even if some people value what you do. that should be something freely left to your discretion and comfort, and i wouldn't demand that you stay if you're suspecting that being here will continue to harm you

additionally, if the tech corner were to be locked, it doesn't necessarily mean a new one can't be created :>

You bitch about multiposts being against the rules then bitch about people asking GMTs, who are the ones supposed to enforce the rules.
Get a grip.

Also there's not as many replies because winny just shares stuff he likes, some people may like it too but if they replied every time 90% of the thread would be "cool".

Until I get a reply from the GMT and government, let's get back to business.

I have decided to try out Floorp Browser. So far, I do like it. I find it a more refined version of Firefox, with more customization, which is always nice. It also feels less heavy and more smooth. Not sure why, but yeah. I will come with a more detailed review when I have more time with it.

i would be thoroughly left out of my own comfort zone of comprehension when trying to make an informed decision in either case :c it's a frustrating matter of "i don't actually actively plan to change, but... i'm tempted to look and wonder and hope, before leaving it to a whim", maybe? decisionmaking is generally exhausting

i probably would be comfortable enough with general-use browsers! although i did prefer the thought of firefox presumably being more lightweight and privacy-oriented (relatively) than chrome or edge or something else

I think you shouldn't put too much thought into it and just try things out. I didn't discover that Librewolf is a bit too much for my needs and wishes until I tried multiple different browsers and whatnot and found what worked best for me.

To my knowledge, its window managing system is just very old feeling. Things like window snapping or splits of any kind aren't possible by default. Maximizing is basically making the app full screen too. Alongside this, the ecosystem heavily favors if you have more Apple devices and the biggest nail in the coffin is the cost for such machines are extremely high and they still cheap out in places like RAM, which is hilarious and their defense against that is even more hilarious.

I suffered for 7 years on a MacBook.

Being trapped with a pathetic 128GB and no games is not fun. I used a pirated version of Crossover (kinda like wine but you have to pay) until it told me to go fuck myself and stopped opening my games.

It eventually messed itself up after an update with too little storage remaining but that's beyond the point.

I've been trying to use Floorp for the past two days or so. I guess these are my first impressions of it:
  1. It seems more smooth on my system than vanilla Firefox, which is nice
  2. They bring back the theme Firefox had before Firefox 89, with smaller tab sizes and a more tightly packed top section
  3. There are more settings exposed, like the keyboard shortcuts or the profile manager
  4. They add some new features like a sidebar
  5. In the settings, they recommend some extensions, like Tree Style Tab or uBlock Origin
  6. They don't advertise themselves as the most privacy protecting browser. What they offer is similar to vanilla Firefox, which is alright.
Overall, I do like it. It is slightly more bloated than vanilla Firefox, but offers a nice experience either way. I highly recommend it.

old pcs are fun if you use old software on it, it really hits that spot many pursue, the magic goes out soon, but it does feel like 2008 for a brief moment again.

my windows xp was wonderful in loading internet explorer (it took less than 10 seconds to load a page), but it sucked to load even the most simple cereal box games.

thats the things you will usually find on those:

personal documents, from school or work.
old images, usually family photos that the owner transferred from his 2000's nikon camera.
old songs.
a cd burner.
clocks, a lot of clocks and maybe some calendars.
one or two games other than windows experimental ones (solitaire).

about donating them, eh "old tech" from 2000's are not rare, I worked at this IT company for some time and they MOSTLY had 1995-2005 PC's. now if you find a macintosh in working order... sir... you have struck gold.

"I worked at this IT company for a time and they MOSTLY had 1995-2005 PC's"

it was so many that they started giving away some, because we didnt have space anymore, for some time my only work was to rip old 60GB HDD's the entire day (we had towers and towers of those).

Very sadly, Google is being really annoying and it seems Youtube, on other browsers that don't use Chromium as a base, they have noticeable lag compared to Chromium based browsers. Since Floorp has an user agent spoofer, I was able to notice that without any spoofing, YouTube was pretty slow to load. With the spoofer on, it was quicker to load. Now on Brave and it loads in an instant. Really, really annoying. Going to stick with Brave, I guess. Actually, do I mind waiting a bit longer? No, not really. I can tank it.

  1. that it is built with hardware optimizations put in place for a smoother experience and I agree with them
  2. it has some extra features like a sidebar
  3. it has a new design language (it follows GNOME's styling mostly)
  4. split tabs
  5. vertical tabs
It is good. I don't like the vertical tabs too much, however.

TL;DR: 13th and 14th gen CPUs are mostly safe. Use the newest BIOS update for the motherboard you're buying and use the defaults. The entire situation seems to be a mixture of motherboard vendors pushing power to the absolute limit, poor microcode leading problems with boosting, variable quality control and management weirdness, alongside workloads being weird themselves.

New Intel CPUs launching on October 24th, 2024. This gen is named Arrow Lake and it will have a new naming scheme.

Intel Core i9-14900K -> Intel Core Ultra 9 285K
Intel Core i7-14700K -> Intel Core Ultra 7 265K
Intel Core i5-14500K -> Intel Core Ultra 5 245K

Intel is doing what AMD did with Zen5: lay out the groundwork for new stuff in the future. The most notable change between the 14th gen and this new line is the fact that Intel says they have reduced the power consumption by half, while having the same performance as the 14900K. That would be really good for Intel. It seems they're working on a new socket too, with better pressure on the CPU, so the need for a contact frame is removed.

I'm personally intrigued to see how these new chips perform.

Intel's own chip fab seems to be going to plan, so says Intel.

It was probably turned into a keychain and the circuit board yielded

A blog has surfaced from a laptop manufacturer, condemning the entire coreboot project for being unprofessional.

https://www.phoronix.com/news/Malibal-Suggests-No-Coreboot

After a search online, I found this reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxhardware/comments/15v2y21/stay_away_from_malibal/

The article is also getting more and more personal and heated up as the post went on, which felt weird, but I dismissed at first. Seeing this thread, my original hunch was right. They also stopped selling in Germany and Poland and Texas, as well as cutting communications with AMD entirely simply because they had bad experiences with coreboot maintainers and consultants. They might be childish too, but it seems Malibal took very personally. Very strange behavior overall.

coreboot did nothing wrong

What should I put on this old school laptop (preferably 32 bit stuff because it's on a 32 bit version of Windows (despite having a 64 bit CPU) and also preferably software that doesn't require admin)

If the CPU is 64-bit, then the Windows version is wrongly installed. Since the CPU is 64-bit, perhaps try Linux on it? Maybe make it into some sort of local network file server? Maybe a Jellyfin instance?

It used to be common to install 32 bits windows on lower-end 64 bits devices. Since 32 bits windows are allegedly use less resources to run.

Uhm... What do I do if my battery kept itself safe one day and now I can only use my laptop if it has AC power?
great_elmo
You could use it as a desktop (what I did) until you get a new battery.

They aren't. The API request that adblockers like uBlock Origin used were also used for malicious usage, so Google saw it as a security risk. I don't like this change either, but they aren't doing this to kill adblockers specifically. uBlock Origin Lite works just fine on Chrome from my testing for a casual user. Google understands that if they actually go after adblockers, head on, they will lose their influence and power, more or less immediately.

This is a spectrum regarding internet privacy. Where are y'all sitting? Personally, towards the privacy-conscious point.

I find it a bit cringe too, but the core idea is certainly better than "use this; if you don't, you're stupid and you get spied on by everybody".
Jangsoodlor
I'd like to be more towards privacy-conscious ppl but I, as with many ppl, needs Google Account (and also GitHub for me (owned by Microsoft)) for school/work. And also use mainstream social media (not something most people don't even know what it is like Signal) to connect with ppl.
Karmine
Why is the pic so low res? Can barely read it.

I sit somewhere between privacy conscious and activist according to this. I don't really sacrifice convenience that much, like I still use windows, switching to a privacy focused linux distro is way too inconvenient to be worth it for me.

These new Intel CPUs are kind of weird. The launch was rushed and the power efficiency claim is very weird. The pricing for these CPUs is really bad too. That doesn't mean there aren't some good things here, but it's too little for anything significant. I'm disappointed with this new generation of CPUs, but at the same time, both of these generations are switching to new architectures. Let's hope that the next one will be better.
