So you want events that require little to no effort for the participants?
That would just be the "boring interactive threads that go nowhere" some talked about.

Actual conversations end up like this thread, full of walls of text most people don't want to read anyway, especially newer people who don't know anyone and don't know what OT is about.
When you go on a new forum you don't really want to spend hours reading walls of text, you want to participate in something.
I'm not saying these threads shouldn't exist but if they ever became the norm the forum would quickly die as it would prevent people who don't have too much time and newcomers to participate.

It's the usual "OT bad" thread from an old denizen who liked it better when they were more active.

OT changes, it's been constantly evolving since it was created but as always when something changes some people are not happy about it.

genuinely pretty pleased to see that this extent of newer denizens are genuinely enjoying the experience here for whatever that's worth, and with the understanding that OT often naturally reflects its denizen culture to some extent, it's giving the sense that it's the way it is in large part because new denizens might be getting some representation in what we get here.

not that it's unanimous or anything, it's clear we've got different ideas of where to take this. but it's remarkably stable in my opinion even with the old-as-time critique of conventionally low-quality threads, where drama mostly revolves around users who already have an established "role" to play as the troublemaker or the leash in the social dynamic, from what i think i'm seeing.

to return to the point, i'm also interested in hearing this out, although only superficially for the moment. i don't really mind the critique and actually would probably welcome it, but i just can't really see much to critique that seems particularly urgent or unique to the dynamic we have in OT, where this scenario is in constant pendulum-like flux between generations.

Can't wait for when I go boomer mode and make this exact thread in 2 years time

I really do like these types of threads though even if the discussion isn't particularly centred or focussed. They give people a chance to think critically and share their opinions, which doesn't happen often in OT under the pile of shitposting and interactive threads, as well as the weird social hierarchy which might prevent newer people from speaking out.

Just not too often and not drama filled because it'd get annoying, I like shitposting more.

There is no such thing as a perfect community especially one that’s centered around imperfect topics. Meta change and people change, an era can only last so long. If you like the current flow, just do what you’re doing but if you don’t, start making changes yourself.

I’m not criticizing Yyotta for making this thread as I to listen to other’s opinion on this subject. Hell I even made one myself a few months back.

manishh routinely posts like women are the antithesis to his existence, and honestly i'm not good with discerning tone so i can't tell if it's a joke or if he genuinely just doesn't understand how to treat women reasonably

but that aside manishh usually isn't much of a dick outside of that, so it was really more of an example to use for why it might've seemed toxic, assuming that he shared OT's responses at times like that. genuinely pretty chill person overall once that first impression period died down.

I won't go into too much detail. Roboboy013 was someone who I would call an online friend. She always talked about how she had cancer and how awful it made her life. She went into detail about all the misery she went through, and it made me depressed. Then one day, she admitted that she lied about having cancer. I have never forgiven her for that since.

hmm. understandable, though closing yourself off entirely from online friendship isn't healthy either.

i've had a similar experience to some extent, i've grown up with the internet at a formative age where i'd ultimately encounter momentary/transitory friends who would suicide-bait me for sympathy. i genuinely believed them, and they took advantage of my energy and my intent to support them. i've always had a kind of underlying rescuer-complex, and i'd repeatedly fall into that for a number of people, defending them and rationalizing their behavior if they're being singled out or rejected by society, even when they were repeatedly shitty people. i've had to learn how to cut people off since then.

from that kind of childhood, it's particularly common to shut down and want to protect yourself. it's a significant kind of weight to carry when you've become that invested and involved in a person's life. but you are not required to be their therapist, and it is not your responsibility to take for things you didn't do.

as scary as it can be, it's okay to continue trying to connect with people. there will be someone sincere and genuine in their compassion for you and respect for you. i eventually grew with the help of people who heard me out even if they couldn't really solve my issues, because that isn't their responsibility either. but they did help me digest my experience through each mutual exchange of vulnerability. eventually i found friendship without fixating on my baggage.

i still often handle people's pain for them, but i'd like to think i'm just a little smarter about it. there are friends who suffer that i continually aim to shelter, and knowing where to establish your boundaries is a very important part of cultivating that ability. it's a skill that often is still possible to learn and develop with experience whenever this scenario appears. you might just find that you won't have to use it after all.

mmyeah this is a fair point too, i forgot that the real world exists and that people are very capable of prioritizing tangible friendships over digital friendships... so your approach with vulnerability and investment in friendships will probably vary from what someone like me might make of it.

digital application of socialization is pretty much my only world of communication, so take that suggestion with this in mind, i'm pretty immersed in the internet over anything else and will probably dissociate and hold a grossly out-of-focus pov irl. i value digital friends equally highly, and i'm extremely preferential to digital communication because i operate best that way out of convenience of access and communication, as well as my capacity to integrate more sensibly because i only have to think for a moment and type, instead of immediately processing and expressing/emoting my feelings/thoughts, and using my body and voice to communicate (which can be very draining).

...oversharing for context aside, i trust you'll manage that some way or another.

Though I still prefer IRL friends, I understand what you mean.

Despite having many friends, I have an issue with stuttering and thinking of sentences cohesively. In the online world, it's not as big of an issue, as I can think harder, and edit my words. Online, the only thing that displays is your personality, and it's harder to be judged, as people don't get to look at you. This is why I think it's easier to make and maintain friends in the digital realm.
But I've come to learn that in order to become more confident in real life, and quickly prove wrong the people who judge me based on appearance, I have to get my priorities straight. I should spend and prioritise my 'skills' in the real world, and maintain what relationships I have. Online friends can only take you so far, usually, they turnover faster than real friends do.

Of course, this is coming from the perspective of a 16 year old. I recall having a discussion on this exact forum about the topic of friends, and I've been told by Abraker and many others, that you lose a lot of friends after University, as you all go your own ways in life. With this, I understand why an adult would put more value onto online friends.

You have some new ones tho, yh
debatable, I only really meet one person around my age irl.
I guess it comes down to what you would count as a friend.
If you're comfortable, then it's fine to have one friend
But recently I've been okay with making friends older than I am

Hmmm, I know ppl here, yep, there is some ppl I get along with but only a few are like ppl I'd still talk in a long term to consider them friends.

Also, yep, irl friendships allow you stuff that you cannot do online and feels more organic, sadly during pandemic most of my friedships either vanished or turned into acquaintances so... I was left basically alone now heh.

I'm not friends with anyone here. I don't like making online friends after what happened with me and Roboboy013.
Honestly, not having online friends isn't a bad thing.
With the right lack of discipline, online friendships turn into online obsessions or relationships, which are cringe.
That's only with some people though (Valorant Players)
Yeah but not all valorant players : (

what are friends

I feel something comforting in online friends though. If something happens that could ruin our friendship and hate each other, I could easily just click the unfriend button and never associate with them again. It's as easy as that. there are barely any drawbacks from this since the internet is such a huge place.

That's not the same for IRL friendships turning sour. We still have to see each other at school or workplaces, often needing to interact with them for cooperation of the class or work team. Because of that and other reasons, we can grow bitter about each other, and potentially start talking behind their backs, making false rumors, accusations, and potentially ruining each other's reputations because you have a hate for that person. It's hard to get rid of no longer wanted people in your life IRL if I'd say.

that shit is literally the reason why there are no gnr people in ot today. the thread may have flopped but the whole thing was a massive w.

I’m pretty sure everyone here would value irl friend over online friend. I am friend with a few denizens from gen 8 and before, or at least I think but none of us would directly reach out to the other. Yeah sure we would fuck around if we’re on a discord server but that’s probably the only time we would chat. I guess the right term would be having a social group instead of multiple friends.

I think this is more a question of maturity than anything else.
work is work, friends are friends; you need to learn how to separate one from another, understand and acknowledge your feelings but still do what needs to be done the best way possible, so you wont turn your professional life and your emotions into a mess because of some beef.
