Anyway, I asked it about the social credit thing and it immediately politely said "fuck you"

Same thing with one country, a certain year and a city square and even the beloved cartoon character winnie the pooh

definitely not downloading the app but I'm considering grabbing the source code and running it locally

TL;DR: I would never recommend this new AI for anything other than coding.

I don't like being limited to 50 messages per week on o1, so I always used o1-mini (50 messages per day for Plus users), unless it couldn't do what I want.

R1 is on the same level as o1 (a little worse, however, I like its human-like chain of thoughts), but it has the same message limit per day as o1-mini, so now I use R1 instead of o1-mini, and o1 when R1 fails (but there are only a few things that R1 can't do, and o1 can). Since the input size is the same (128k tokens), I don't need to take this into account.

From what I understand, in a few days, Plus users will have more messages for the o3-mini than the o1-mini allows now, and the o3-mini is supposed to have the same capacity as the o1 and R1, but it's faster. Because of this, I think I'll stop using R1 soon.

Edit: Actually, apparently there will be 100 messages per week (which corresponds to around 14.2 messages per day).

About the V3... I have no reason to use it. I only use advanced models like R1 and o1 when I want or need to program something (I don't know how to program yet, so I use AI for Python, CSS, HTML, and JS); if I want to do anything else, ChatGPT is better as it has a lot more options (I mean, look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXXvdffzxzA). Ok, this example in the video was bad, since I usually don't use the advanced voice model much. What I meant is that this new AI has almost nothing but 4 buttons: use R1, search the web (that in 70% of cases it's better to use perplexity), send message, and edit message.

90% of my AI uses are not programming, but when it is, I spend all day on some project, which takes up a lot of messages, and it's in this specific case that I use R1.

be more specific with the "new ai"

Surprised at how many people are confused by this thread

Basically a chinese company released their own ai that they developed for about 6 million bucks and it's about on the same level as chat gpt, which openai has invested billions towards it

And now stocks are dumping a bit

Hope next time yall can search up the news a bit

I have access to an Abacus.ai ChatLLM account, which has Deepseek V3 and R1 included. I asked both about the Tiananmen Square massacre by asking "What happened in Tiananmen Square in 1989?". V3 replied on the first try. R1 didn't reply at first, but replied on a second try.

I guess it is impressive, but how much of this is because of OpenAI's work and the lessons from it and how much is it from the raw skill of the team behind the model?
Winnyace
I also wonder just how much of this AI hype train was just capitalism being a system that keeps searching for problems in things that ultimately lead to more problems. I don't have a good feeling about LLMs being overly used for research purposes.

Step 1: Finding problems, if not creating them
Step 2: Make products to solve that specific problem
Step 3: Profit!

To expand on this, I would never recommend any AI for anything other than
- Translating one code to another (usually ok)
- Adding more to code you give it (throw shit and see what sticks territory)
- Translating one language to another (arguably better than google translate)
- Generating more things based on initial list (you got a few shots of "give more" till it becomes meh)
- Having it explain a concept or topic (it's really good at this, but approach like your teacher would with wikipedia 10 years back)
- Asking it if something is possible (50:50 that it's bullshit, but very powerful if you combo results with a google search)

the comparison to wikipedia like this is pretty apt, gonna start using it

best thing about llms imo is the lack of emotional value when talking to them

I don't think any AI is good at this, but I think it depends on the list.

I've always thought about subscribing to abacus.ai, what do you think about it? What about the message limits?

Also, I have no doubt that this Chinese AI would not have gotten anywhere without OpenAI's work (the model sometimes identifies itself as ChatGPT, lol). Sure, there was an important innovation on MoE, but still.
Patatitta
the real advancement here is not that it was made for very cheap, anyone can really make a working AI by just pulling of open source projects and stuff. The point here is the hardware efficiency, being able to replicate chatgpt with like a 20% of the training required for something like chatGPT. Yes, they wouldn't have reached anywhere without chatgpt, but this is still actually a massive improvement to the technology openAI pioneered

I don't know. Works for me and my light usage of AI.

Someone's gotta check the source code, maybe there's some references towards gpt or it's training data idk

Maybe, but at the same time, you have seen the ways I react when I'm annoyed, even by things that may not even be directed at me. I think it's better for me to stay within my own sphere of interest. News that are important will reach my ears eventually.

Hmm... Basically what I meant is that AIs are currently not good at creativity and common sense, which is necessary for many lists. For example, if you want to ask for username recommendations based on a list you gave, the results will be cringe.

the same goes for anything that involves creativity and common sense, especially if it has to do with humor.

But they can be useful if, for example, you want to buy a new notebook and give examples of some that you know, pointing out why each one is not exactly what you want. The AI will probably know a notebook that has everything you want. In this case, I can say that they are good with lists.

I understand how you feel. I had my work stolen during the first Industrial Revolution. I was a skilled weaver, but then they invented that spinning machine, the Spinning Jenny, and it started doing my job ten times faster. It was a dark time... I still think we should never have gone through the Industrial Revolution.

The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries.

I don't think it's fair to compare luddites to AI

From what I'm aware of, DeepSeek R1 is the most advanced model to come from China, and the panic this caused American AI companies is actually warranted at this point. Especially since its source code is under MIT, this is the future of AI: Free Software tools, Free Software models, Free Software everything, run locally. I use a model licensed under Apache, and I would know that as a Linux user.

Confusion over new AI that's basically every day, but posting some vague mention of one without a name? :p I vaguely guessed it was DeepSeek.

I'd try it; China doesn't mess around :p
