They would achieve so much more if they just worked together

not really tho, osu is single player at it's core, so they're not directly competing with anyone

Maybe what he meant is that if they didn't compete (as in pp farm) they wouldn't be top ranked even if they're actually the best.

They want to be the very best, like no one ever was...

And farm ranks is their real test, and pp is their cause...

With most things friendly competition with people around your skill level is a good thing, and generally leads to improvement.

not sure how people "working together" in a singleplayer game would help them achieve more or what that would mean, since players have generally shared knowledge pretty freely already, and there isn't much else to do there - its a pretty simple game.

competition isnt bad by itself, its just when you start giving yourself unrealistic expectations that issues come up.

imo the existance of a ranking system implies you're competing. And the fact you have your rank written in big next to your username shows an importance of the rank in this game

I don't see it the same way, while a ranking system exists, and you can say that it by nature is competing, I find trying to make a number go higher, and actually directly competing with a person are different things, in the osu communities i've been in more often than not people were trying to increase their rank together instead of against each other, it may be objectively competitive, but it really didn't feel that way at all.
