if I load up a youtube tutorial on how to do a specific thing with a specific synth and then use that specific thing in my music, would you consider that to be or to not be original

you can shoot for originality all you want but the vast majority of us will never truly hit it. imo art that's compelling is more important and more directly impactful than art that's truly original. schoenberg could be a good example of art that's truly original, but not all that compelling, at least not to the average person.

sewerslvt does not belong in a discussion about originality when her music is boilerplate atmo dnb revivalism, the badly distorted pads covering up her complete inability to chop up drum loops. google "free amen breaks," download the rhythm labs ultimate pack and you will find that she's used several of these loops, as is. countless artists have used them. I've used them. osu's featured artists have used them lol.

Especially when you consider that at the time I was like 22-23 while the others were probably 19 at most which is already kinda weird, now I'm 26 I definitely wouldn't do it with the mostly <18 who are here.
Also the horny is mostly kept to discord now, which is better for everyone.

I'm actually underweight, so def not chubby

Time to fire off some opinions, everybody not included is probably neutral

Sametdze - probably the closest one of all to me, mentally

Farfocele - ++rep, has the most mutual interests

Karmine - +rep

Winnyace - the controversial one

Kobold84 - chill, but has one thing I don't like

Lostsilver - too much fixation on art and characters

Marco - Miku

Patatitta - the contributor, actually has brains unlike some other people

zOz - FREEDOM RAAAHHHHHH

Aireu - the only associations I got are music and edating

There are also some inactive people and my irl friends who play osu, but I won't be naming them

I just feel like the manner of how we both speak here is very similar, so that's why I decided to include it

I don't think you're not allowed using samples or a specific type of sound if someone has already used it, that is not what i'm arguing, I don't mean you need to be on the level of originality of the artist that basically created certain genres, what I mean is that you need to develop a identity that is distinct from the other artists.

Let's talk in osu terms, In osu! there is a lot japanese EDM, however, you listen to camellia, you listen to kobaryo, and you listen to t+pazolite and you can differentiate them, they all use the same sounds and are probably inspired by the same sources but they're clearly distinct entity, with aireunaeus and sewerslvt I don't think such distinction really exists

It's not only that they're making songs that sounds VERY similar to their inspiration without much apparent artistic intention behind it (more than "I want to make breakcore!"), it's that the album cover also emulates it, it's that the way they write the song titles and generally try to sell their music is also the same. I feel there is a line between inspiration and copying someone, and I think they have crossed it

what i'm arguing is that they should just to music, a lot of music, music you enjoy and music you don't, and then painfully analyze and excrutinize even the smallest element of each song, see why they work, see why they don't, see what they techniques they use, what do those techniques accomplish, etc.

By doing that you're developing a toolbelt, and now, when you're making a song and you have an idea on your head of what you want to achieve, now that you have that deep understanding of music, I feel you can truly make something distinct. You can emulate how a certain artist sounds, but you also need to understand why that artist chose to make the song that way, and I feel that knowledge is WAY more important than knowing how to emulate it at a surface level
DeletedUser_2024727
if you rly wanna do sewerslvt's schtick but better all you really need to do is learn how to use distortion well and you catapult yourself up to the top of the boring modern breakcore heap

No, but I do have an acid house song that I wrote over a couple of days. I forget the TB-303 VST I used, but I remember using a Commodore 64 SID emulator for the bass line.

Very well. I do have a few things to say, some nice, some aren't. Might update this occasionally.

Aomi: I remember when I was basically bullied by her clique, and it did honestly bother me a lot at that time. We did basically just forgave each other at one point and went our separate ways. It's definitely something that scarred me at some point, though thanks to what happened I managed to learn to argue and to call out people on their behaviour, so I guess it's not all bad.

Nameless: Was in Aomi clique, often called me "dumb" and in general had judgemental character around himself.

Tae: Was also in Aomi clique. Felt rather showoff-ish.

Green Platinum: I suppose the "green" part comes from a certain four-leaf clover website. Definitely like the users of the aforementioned website, had no filter and seemed in general to be arrogant, as if just trying to call everyone to pick a fight. I think he was also in the Aomi clique?

kai99: At the time they were seriously active, honestly just felt like a hyperactive kid let loose.

Blitzfrog: Could say the same thing as kai99, but felt to be a bit older. Definitely didn't have a lot of filter.

Penguin: A figure who oozed with implied self-importance and authority, seemed to want to show superiority to everyone no matter what.

abraker: Out of all GMTs, actually didn't abandon their spirit of an OT shitposter, just had fun like everyone else.

Corne: I can agree with everyone else about Corne not being himself after becoming a GMT. To me it feels like he's forcing himself into this position of a GMT to look "official". I definitely like the old Corne who was a lot more genuine and approachable.

ColdTooth: A literal dinosaur. Her committment to still visiting this shipwreck is rather commendable after so much time.

Kobold84: I can see why so many people don't have much insight on him. From my insight when I was chatting at #russian, he seems to just be a normal Russian young adult male in a position of power, there's nothing beside it. He likes to discuss serious topics.

sametdze: still dedicated to trainfus, pretty commendable for keeping the schtick and not going absurd with it.

- Marco -: the same can't be said about him, it's like he's trying to insert Hatsune Miku into any conversation possible. I can agree with other assessments.

mizu_chuu: Definitely a more sane Miku fan. Or maybe I haven't seen them talk much?

Winnyace: I'm friends with this guy for a while, and frankly I have a few things to say. I am not going to bring too much of the cat out of the bag, but I'll just say that he has a longer fuse now, but he does explode into slurs sometimes. He has a hard time though, that I, as a Russian can relate, since we both live in ex-communist states with corruption in the government.

johnmedina999: literal goat of OT. The writer of OT!News, was present during the golden age of OT, so yeah. I wish he'd come back sometimes.

Behrauder: likes using neural networks for the purpose of posting, just a kid. I don't really sense any harm from them.

Pattattita: Well, definitely one of the most outspoken people here currently.

Achromalia: Was the most outspoken person on OT. Though they usually post on FG nowadays, perhaps our community was too much for him? Definitely likes to write long-winded responses to everything, seems to have a lot of free time, based on TN posting history.

upd1 16/01/25:

Tad: Literal edgelord with some computer experience, liked to LARP as Tanya from that one anime series.

Kolmas: Fellow eroge enjoyer :3

Edit2:
Tateshina Eve: A friend a care too much about to the point of fault, seriously. I really enjoy his company <3

I always got Macro’s name wrong. This man is lowkey not doing enough for miku like how are you gonna lose to some Japanese dude that literally married miku.

1996-1998 is around the time I got into trance, techno, acid house, and such, actually. It just happened to coincide with when I started to write music. And high school. My early attempts at acid sucked ass, though.

my first rhythm game ever was actually a ps2 game called frequency from roughly 2002, it flipped a switch in my brain and I've been super into music ever since. the first music I ever made would have been around 2003 or 2004 using some dumb shit on the ps2 called magix music maker, but then in 2005 I learned about fl studio so I grabbed a crack and got to making some of the worst speedcore on the planet lmao. I think my first album from 2006 is still floating around on the internet but it is very edgy and awful

if remilia was in high school in 98 she's roughly 8-10 years older than me, I graduated in 2008

Actually no! I started off writing General MIDI music in Cakewalk Home Studio ('cause I wanted to use some of it in Doom levels), then later used an updated Cakewalk Pro Audio. Later on I used Reason a bit, but didn't like it, so I moved back to using Cakewalk Sonar 8. I actually started using a tracker in 2014 (Renoise, so I can still use VSTs, though I've also dabbled in Deflemask and Sunvox). What's kinda funny is that I've never used flstudio or its predecessors.

At some time I also used Propellerhead's old ReBirth RB-338 software, but only did a single song in it... and I later redid it in Cakewalk anyway.

Actually I forgot I had an old blog post writeup from almost a year ago that documents my musical journey.

And I'm 41. I graduated high school in 2002.
