Wow it's a great job for your first beta ! I remember the taikosanjiro game that was really buggy on the android
Can't wait for a stable version of it ! :3
But I've got an HTC Desire, so shitty touchscreen

Testing with Samsung Epic 4G:

Game crashes during refreshing if you start with a gigantic songs folder :P

Rarely got any songs to sync properly, but thats to be expected with an alpha stage project.

Skip button stays there throughout the entire song, and pressing anywhere on the top of the screen (not just the skip button) causes the song to "skip" to the start point of the song.

Good idea but, T-aiko is not a good name :<

Yeah... I haven't ever tested it with more than about 10 songs.

Yup, skip is generally broken, it worked at one point but I broke it...

Were you playing a song that actually had a skip button? because I'm pretty sure it happened to everyone song I played that needed a skip button.

yup. although, if I don't skip, the button just stays there even while playing, and upon touching it goes to the beginning p:

on a side note, in game downloads coming \:D/
foulcoon
thats exactly what I posted in the first place

I just assumed that people didn't push the skip button because the OP specifically says not to push the skip button

It'll be sorted next build, a lot of timing corrections and fixes are in place, may have to re-write this thread not to be pesimistic.

a run in neo Xperia

- timing ._.
- can't read more than 1 BG per map
- only give red notes
- broken taiko slider

Don't worry about it, a lot of work has been and will be done. Timing for maps has been pretty much solved, ka's are now in the right place and a lot more is to come.

Looks fun, i'll have to get it when all the kinks are worked out.

Also regarding to the front post: "HTC devices also suck, your touchscreens miss rapid touch events, tough."
My HTC EVO never does anything like this when I play stepmania / random games that require rapid tapping (Like tap so many times to charge something)

I've never got to the bottom of it, it happened on my Desire HD and whatever peppy tested on too.
If you write a simple piece of code to output taps and their count in debugger and tap various rhythms at various speeds, some taps will be missed. It really does seem like a hardware issue.
Doesn't happen at all on any other devices AFAIK

Something to whet some appetites:

Zelos
There are a few little bugs that I wanna point out (Not sure if this has been pointed out already because im to lazy to read back.)

1: TaikOsu maps that have 1/4th kick back sliders which should show up as kkk (or any other pattern) but instead they show up as short drum rolls.
2: After leaving TaikOsu, lets say I start up another up which has the average black screen loading time, the T-Aiko main screen is there until the app itself loads. (I used appkiller to end T-Aiko to see if this issue would fix but regardless that main screen was still there)

Zelos wrote:

Slider ticks are fixed now (they appear same as in osu! taiko mode), although still all sliders in osu! mode appear as sliders in T-Aiko. We will work on making sliders of total length shorter than 2 beats to become dons and kats instead (like osu! taiko mode).

It sounds like an excuse and I hate saying things like this, but I think this is out of my control. Its up to android what is shown while a new app is loading, and this has never happened to me on my phone, so It's likely to be to do with whatever phone provider/manufacture skin of android you have.

If you give me some phone details, I can try it out in emulator, but that's about all I can do. Things like model, android OS version, maybe carrier.

I hate this, when I can read it, but it makes absolutely no sense. Why oh why must there be multiple languages that use cyrillic letters.
OnosakiHito
@Guy-kun: Russia, Ukraina, Serbia/macedonia, not so multiple at all. There are not more countrys who use cyrillic in this way. So please don't say it makes no sense. lol
Anyway, I just said, I was wondering that srbija is also involved in this project. Good luck with this nice project.

Yep, this was already on my todo list, sorry that it wasn't done already.
I'll detect the osu!droid directory and ask if you want to use it's songs folder next version.

In the meantime, if you like, you can move your maps into the T-Aiko songs folder and set the osu!droid folder manually to point to it (since it already has this functionality)

What map was this?
This is extremely surprising since it runs smoothly on MUCH weaker phones, including the pitiful android emulator.

If your phone has trouble exiting something, it's most likely to do with your OS.
Vext_old
http://osu.ppy.sh/s/36884

Well, it wasn't just the exiting. I was going good, but then I noticed my presses were lagging a bit and little by little over the map it got worse until the frame rate dropped and it was jumping ahead randomly and the feedback was the same. So I paused to exit and it took a few mins to even get out of T-aiko. Once I closed it and started back up it was fine though, I am afraid to try it again though haha. The music kept going perfectly fine though.
Topic Starter
Guy-kun
Very odd, sounds like something was going on with your phone if anything, tell me if it does carry on happening, could circumstances of some sort.
I tested all the difficulties on that map and they were perfectly fine, so the map isn't to blame.
Vext_old
Well I tried another diff. and same problem, tried another couple maps and they worked fine, dunno why that map hates me but oh well. Other than that seems solid, the red center drum hits are incredibly unresponsive for me though, if I hit near the outer half it doesn't always take it and if I use 2 fingers or thumbs it doesn't read the taps fast enough, and if I go to a certain speed of tapping it just doesn't accept any of it. (Blue hits were perfect and worked for as fast as I was able to tap though which is why it seems odd)
Topic Starter
Guy-kun
Are you definitely sure that blue hits work fine? I used to have a similar issue when I had a HTC Desire HD and struggled to no end with it, testing it in every way, it turned out that the phone was just not registering rapid successive taps sometimes (especially in a certain rhythm, it'd miss a touch or two every so often).
I've never heard of this on any other device than HTC phones.

I tested this by logging raw touch events after tapping a rhythm I knew involved a certain number of touches and finding some were missing.

Shame about that map for you... Worked fine for me <:
Vext_old
Yep, I was tapping blues as fast as I could to see if it worked and they were firing about as fast as I stream on standard and registering just fine. The red on the other hand will not work that way and actually seem to get slower in response to me going faster. More than 1 finger absolutely screws with it. If my camera wasn't my phone I'd show you what it's doing heh. It is possibly due to the blues being on opposite sections of the screen, while the drum for red is center, the multi-touch might be reading them as one press, unsure though.
Topic Starter
Guy-kun
If you're curious enough to find out, I could give you a debug build with blue/red swapped (as confusing as this would be) to see if it really is regions of the screen that have trouble?
Might bring peace-of-mind <:
Vext_old
I would be willing to give it a shot if you'd like, might have to walk me through it a bit though.

EDIT: Tomorrow, I need to get to bed right now for class tomorrow, lots of finals, oh the excitement. PM if you like.
Natteke
How do you quit the game without having to press the home button and killing the game process? D:
(HTC Desire S here)
Topic Starter
Guy-kun
Are you asking how to end the game process or saying that the process is killed when you press the home button?
Natteke
Basically, add a "Quit" button or something that would end the game process
Topic Starter
Guy-kun
This would be a bad idea.
By Android application fundamentals, you do not 'quit' your app. You send it to the background and let the OS handle clearing the memory when it is needed. You waste more battery force killing your apps rather than letting Android do so when the memory needs to be claimed by something else. (This is an interesting topic if you read up on it, the more you know)

The game is entirely inactive in the background and presents no notifications so there is no purpose in a 'quit' button. The home button is there for suspending apps.
Natteke
Ah okay, I'm still new to Android devices. However, apps in the background do consume RAM though o.o
lepidopodus
Well, at least exiting to the home screen or terminating the application when hitting back button on the device when you are in the main menu of T-Aiko would be better? Like other applications.

Score system(combo bonus or gogo-time bonus or something?), barlines, gekki-renta or spinner or something like that... More to improve, I guess?

Some issues I've met until now.(I'm using Samsung Galaxy S2 and I don't have SD card.):
- The application got error when trying to read files in songs folder with USB storage mode enabled.
- Some songs got duplicated when refreshing after modifying the song folder manually.
- Removed songs never got removed in the song list after ^ happens. Currently my db is screwed up.
- No lead-in, and this bothers me quite a lot in some maps.
- Significant delay between hitting the Taiko and acutal effect of it. (This is a rhythm game, you know.)

Well, that delay (or lag, whatever you call it) issue is quite annoying. Can't play somewhat hard maps due to that. Offset settings were ok when I check auto-play. (I also have an iPad with Taiko no Tatsujin for iOS installed and I know even that app have slight delay, but not that significantly affects gameplay. Can FC even some maps with high note-density like Kurenai with that thing.)

I think I've experienced multi-touch issue too. Maybe due to small screen and relatively small taiko drum.

...Yeah, still lot more to go, but at least this may be a good application for playing Taiko in Android before Namco notices it lol.

BOY this turned out to be a long post, sorry

Natteke wrote:

Apps in the background hold RAM, but It's up to android to clean them out when that memory is needed. Background apps have much less priority over foreground ones.

lepidopodus wrote:

Hmmm, I'm considering this now that everyone seems to keep asking, the back button from the menu screen, I was against it though... I'm not sure.

lepidopodus wrote:

Of course, this will be coming, the current score system is just a barebones one.

- The application got error when trying to read files in songs folder with USB storage mode enabled.
Thanks, I'll fix this, I got a market error report of something similar too. (My mistake)

- Some songs got duplicated when refreshing after modifying the song folder manually.
- Removed songs never got removed in the song list after ^ happens. Currently my db is screwed up.
I'm aware of this too and need to make improvements to the songDB. In the mean-time, if you go to Settings>Apps>T-Aiko and Clear Cache this will clear the song database and you can refresh to create it from scratch (doesn't take that long)

- No lead-in, and this bothers me quite a lot in some maps.
Also on the todo list

- Significant delay between hitting the Taiko and acutal effect of it. (This is a rhythm game, you know.)
I don't appreciate being told it's a rhythm game, I wouldn't spend $25 shoving out some garbage that didn't play well to the best of my knowledge.

However, what kind of timescale do you think this delay is, is it visually noticeable? Is there a delay between you touching the screen and the drum appearing to have moved down?
There is no noticeable delay on my less powerful Nexus S and it has been tested on another Galaxy SII as well.

I think I've experienced multi-touch issue too. Maybe due to small screen and relatively small taiko drum.
I highly doubt this is happening on the SII,

...Yeah, still lot more to go, but at least this may be a good application for playing Taiko in Android before Namco notices it lol.
Thanks, there's further to go and I'm here to do just that <:
There are apps that directly infringe copyrights on the Market, I doubt much will be done against one who's gameplay is similar to another.

also thank you for your hard work

Thankyou for your support ;_; <3

Here's the APK: http://puu.sh/9Ii0
lepidopodus
@Guy-kun: Quite subtle to say about delay since it is just a miliseconds scale,(hard to notice expect a few experienced players, I guess.) but I sometimes find myself tapping the taiko twice since the note didn't disappeard that quickly like I assumed. (yeah hitting Taiko became something like a reflex to me unless it's a complex stream, lol.)

I mentioned about multi-touch issue but I don't think it's a real issue, so nevermind :D

EDIT: Uh, do we have some misunderstandings about the word 'rhythm game', or just I mistranslated the word you said? I mean, one of genre of games, synonym of music games, like osu!, TnT, etc., not a bad word or something.
Topic Starter
Guy-kun
Hmmmm, I'd say I'm pretty adept at Taiko and I can't feel anything off, but of course I can't test with your device nor can you test with mine.
Can you try a map I can definitely say is perfectly playable to see if there could be a difference in device performance?
http://osu.ppy.sh/s/13628 : Taiko difficulty is 100% playable and enjoyable

Either way, of course I'll be optimizing the performance.

P.S. I understand what Rhythm Game means, I just didn't like to be patronized as if I didn't understand what's important in a rhythm game.

You should rather use the taiko no tatsujin official scoring algorithm than the taiko osu! one (wich is slightly different) :)

There wouldn't be much to gain from doing that though. If anything it only subtracts the ability to compare scores to osu! scores.

(Or Excellent/Great - Great-Good)

Unless you still want to keep it like this to conserve the osu!tenticity.

And try to put more screenshots atm like for auto and stuff.

(For the osu! scoring system, it looks simpler than the original taiko system... Taiko system looks like it has the n-stars counted, the difficulty, the score cap-like thing too... I know by heart (I think) the scores you can earn, on most maps : 940 and 1100. 1260 is quite rare.)
Yunacat
I know you people haven't seen me around much, I still exist! I just haven't been on the actual game much.

I found this while mobile and added it to my phone and got it to pull from the osu!droid folder for music (thanks for that, omg) I have a few things I noticed and a few suggestions! /o/

First thing, I'm playing this on a Sony Xperia Play (aka Playstation Phone)

Issues:
> When playing with the drum, I feel like there are "dead spots" when it comes to pressing the keys, particularly around the top of the drum itself, and the lower part of the rim. Not sure why...
> When playing any song, if I hit the notes faster than 1/4 there's lag in the presses. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just wont do anything. It's really difficult to explain, but... I also noticed that if you use only one side, you have a better chance at it reading than if you "roll" from side to side like you really should be doing.
> It crashes. Frequently. (You probably are well aware of this though)
> When I started playing, I could tell it was off. I went to offset and it was default 70. I set it back to 0, and it worked perfectly fine (I used auto to listen to it to make sure it sounded right just in case). I have no idea why default was 70. Is it just how it is, or did it "guess" that from my phone?
> I feel calibration is off in the game menus. I have to hit all over the place just to hit the >Return button, and it takes me about 5~10 presses to enter a song...

Suggestions:
> Setting songs to alphabetic order rather than download order.
> Adding a search function (I have a ton of songs and its a lot to go through)
> I love love love the blue theme, but I think the results screen could use a little more color, or at least shading to make it stand out a bit more.
> A switch to hide songs that don't have "taiko only" modes (I realize this would hide taikosu too, but im not sure how to "add" taikosu to the list of "taiko only")
> Support for custom skins (I love TnT but I love the custom skins more)
> In game menu activated by the "menu" button like osu!droid has, basically it lets you pause, retry, continue playing, or exit back to the menu.
> Slightly bigger bars for the song listing. I'll admit my phone's screen is pretty big, but the bars still show up as small and my thumb is bigger than the bars...

For the future:
> Maybe add support for the physical keys on Xperia Play (making the key settings match Taiko PS A/B/C). If I could handle the code for this, I'd do it myself...
> Custom hitsounds+special drum. Kinda like in the TnT games where you could earn special drums (and in Youkai Daikessen they were similar to weapons in RPGs) but instead you could just choose between the drums. I miss my frying-pan drum! ;o;/
> Mods: like double time, hard rock, hidden, flashlight, etc

Ok I'ma cut this off here so I can go sleep. If I think of anything else, I'll add it in later! /o/

PS: If I had more time, I'd offer to test it, but idk if I have the time to right now with work/life/holidays/bleh

It does work on tablets, but isn't optimized at the moment (so it is limited in resolution to stop in looking broken), I hope to change this in the future.
The scoring I think I'll keep like osu! for now, but thanks for the suggestion, and scoring I am hoping to get sorted, I know the osu! style is simpler but I'd rather know the specifics <:

Yunacat wrote:

This can't be anything to do with the game code unfortunately, the detection allows touches anywhere below (not sure where it is, possibly the top of the drum) extending the whole width of the screen. SO any dead spots can only really be your imagination or hardware.

Again, if you're using the latest version(1.1), this is most likely a hardware limitation. If i can get hold of a camera I'll record that rapid touches and good performance are possible.

> It crashes. Frequently. (You probably are well aware of this though)
I'm not actually, I had the idea that it was very stable and I'm not getting any error reports on the market, but this may be a false silence then. I actually don't get any crashes.
When you do, can you please send error reports (when android asks you to), it's invaluably helpful. Putting your nick in the comments is also great for getting back to you, or if you're feeling super bored type in a word or two about what happened/when/how.[/quote]

This I can understand. Android MediaPlayer is horrible for rhythm games when it starts playing, it often induces a small offset that you can't predict and reports incorrect positions in the song. I've introduced a few quirks to try and stabilize the offset and it's semi-reliable.
The offset however is device specific. It's good to know your device needs 0, means it is more stable, my Nexus S and a number of other devices need 70 though. I think the Nexus one works well with 50.
Until I put in quite a bit of work for native audio playback/decoding as Pesets has done, this may be an issue for some devices/maps.
(If pesets let me use his native playback code this could be done in no time <: , but as if...)

> I feel calibration is off in the game menus. I have to hit all over the place just to hit the >Return button, and it takes me about 5~10 presses to enter a song...
Is this just the return button? I've heard people say things about the return button but never experienced it myself...

Suggestions:
> Setting songs to alphabetic order rather than download order.
> Adding a search function (I have a ton of songs and its a lot to go through)
Planned and planned (first one sooner)

> I love love love the blue theme, but I think the results screen could use a little more color, or at least shading to make it stand out a bit more.
Thanks, this was on my mind too, I'll take a look

> A switch to hide songs that don't have "taiko only" modes (I realize this would hide taikosu too, but im not sure how to "add" taikosu to the list of "taiko only")
This is a good idea, I'll put it on the list <:

> Support for custom skins (I love TnT but I love the custom skins more)
I actually have the functionality for this but it's half-complete and brings a headache for resolution support (remember devices range from around 200x400 up to 1280x800) I'll put it low on the list

> In game menu activated by the "menu" button like osu!droid has, basically it lets you pause, retry, continue playing, or exit back to the menu.
Plaaaaaned

> Slightly bigger bars for the song listing. I'll admit my phone's screen is pretty big, but the bars still show up as small and my thumb is bigger than the bars...
Are you sure? Do you have trouble pressing them? I understand they're small, but that's to fit more on-screen,

For the future:
> Maybe add support for the physical keys on Xperia Play (making the key settings match Taiko PS A/B/C). If I could handle the code for this, I'd do it myself...
I can take a look, on the list it goes <:

> Custom hitsounds+special drum. Kinda like in the TnT games where you could earn special drums (and in Youkai Daikessen they were similar to weapons in RPGs) but instead you could just choose between the drums. I miss my frying-pan drum! ;o;/
Maybe, maybe, I was thinking about the future for an experience/leveling/unlocking system, but this is obviously getting way ahead, thanks though

> Mods: like double time, hard rock, hidden, flashlight, etc
Of course, give it time, quite low priority

Ok I'ma cut this off here so I can go sleep. If I think of anything else, I'll add it in later! /o/
Thanks very much, all of this is greatly appreciated!
