Show Your Love!

by Ephemeral

As we enter the second phase of our Loved state testing, get ready to cast your vote for the next set of maps to enter the category!

We're pleased to see the positively glowing reception for the new Loved beatmap status. We'd expected people to like it, but not quite this much! Evidently it was something that we should've pushed forward a long time ago, but enough of that for now.

The next phase of testing involves the gradual addition of new beatmaps into the Loved category. To start with, we'll be doing these via community voice polls held on the official forums. Here's how that's gonna work - though I do warn you, it's a bit involved to start with:

  • Each week from now going forward, we'll be holding a "round" of Loved voting in the Community Voice forum.
  • Ten maps will be selected from a pool pulled from the beatmap listing based on a variety of factors - ranging from the number of favourites they hold, to the predominant gamemode that their mapsets are based around and an appraisal of the overall "feel" of the map.
  • Each gamemode will have their own poll - you can vote in all of them, if you like.
  • We're also making use of the rather comprehensive lists that many members of the community have taken to creating since we announced the mode, so feel free to participate in those if you'd like.
  • Every member of the community will be given four votes to use in these polls.
  • The top 4 maps voted for in the osu!standard poll, and the most popular choice in the each of the other gamemode polls will be placed into the Loved status at the end of the voting for a total of 7 maps added per round.
  • The leftover maps will remain in the pool until the next round, where another four maps will be added to supplement the ones that were added to the mode.
  • Maps that are not voted into the category in any round they're in after 2 rounds of voting (2 weeks) will be removed from the voting list and replaced with another map chosen from the criteria listed earlier.
  • Some maps with many difficulties across a number of gamemodes may be featured across multiple gamemode polls. For now, winning in any gamemode poll will have the whole mapset across all modes placed into Loved. This may change in later rounds.
  • If a map wins in multiple gamemode polls, it will be taken from the poll in which it scored the highest number of votes, and another map will take its place within the other polls based on the next highest number of votes.
  • Rounds will remain active for three days, covering the weekend completely across all timezones.
  • New rounds will be announced via newsposts and also over the @osugame twitter account, and the results of last week's rounds will be covered in the next osu!weekly. The maps will enter the Loved state long before they are announced in the weekly.

TL;DR: Vote for your favourite maps via Community Voice polls, and the top 4 voted standard maps plus the top voted map from every other gamemode will be added to the Loved listing after the polls are closed.

Just a reminder, this is just one way that maps will enter the Loved category for the time being. We're debating a number of ways internally about how this can be split into a system that runs on its own, possibly using SP or kudosu as a "currency" of sorts to invest the status into a beatmap. The system is in open testing after all, and we're using this opportunity to experiment with a number of ways to do this sort of thing in the future.

We're also currently working on the map pool for the non-osu! gamemodes. We've identified some issues with the criteria we were using to select the maps, particularly related to how favourites for other difficulties on the map set were not correlating strongly enough to the gamemode-specific difficulties within these sets.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way..

Head on over to the Community Voice forum and check out the Announcement posts to get started on voting for your favourites!.

You're also all very welcome to discuss any maps you think would be worth adding in the polling threads, but please keep it civil! It's all about the love, after all.

Pretty cool

ABSOLUTE SOUL

The under guy haves a ghost.

TFW the map I want to submit only has 2 favorites https://osu.ppy.sh/b/977776

WHY DOES NO ONE PLAYS THIS ONE

el mejor juego de la historia

Quick question - there are some maps in the game which have the maximal score too high to be ranked, as they overflow the score counter. Is there any chance for them to get Loved? Or is this a similar story as with autofail maps (not until this issue is fixed)?

NeXt4r_ Wojowu

idk but i saw someone request impossible map into the list

i good the music

hehe xd

So is this https://osu.ppy.sh/forum/t/... the only place to really have any sort of discussion about this topic? Seeing as how spouting off a paragraph or two here may have less of an impact.

yes jesse map are gonna get loved stage YES YES YES

For what it's worth the non-osu! gamemodes have really shitty selections that are mostly influenced by the osu! difficulties in the beatmap set (someone didn't check them before putting them up) so we'll probably redo those polls. Stay tuned.

Would it also work if the "shifty selections" are considered as 0 votes and just get replaced next round so all modes get a map in loved this round? As long as not all 10 selections are considered shifty^^

Would the maps that get removed from the voting list will have any chance to get back into the list?

I can't WAIT to see more 8 stars in the Loved section!

What about mapper wants his/her graveyarded map to be moved to loved or just have leaderboard and he presses a button and it like BAM happens. Could do it once a week or some other limit. Would that be too much strain on the servers with all these scores? I'm IT impaired but it doesn't seem like much trouble.

This would cause a massive issue with a mapper creating a shitmap, a cancer map, a computer breaking map or anything else retarded, and submitting it. Having any one person be able to choose a map to be loved, whether it's their own or someone else's, causes massive issues with quality, preferential treatment and ignorance. Loved isn't about quality, but we don't want something like this (https://osu.ppy.sh/s/88875) "https://osu.ppy.sh/s/88875)") getting loved because the mapper has the ability to do it.

Frc Falling Snow

but my dude quality is subjective that map will be rankable in 2020 anyways

Akali Falling Snow

And then no one plays it wow. If everyone could make leaderboards for their map there would be no need for "loved" beatmap section on the osu! site, challenging, gimmicky and well made but not ranked or simply fun maps where players could show off their impressive plays would be recognized and more popular (invisible hand of free market) , while shitty trolling attempts ignored.

Donkama 2000 please!!!

I forgot this is 2016 and people want generic fullscreen maps all over the screen, bad for me to think loved section would be any different.

I honestly think that all maps should get an equal chance of getting nominated because songs from inferior genre (aka less favourite to the map) will less likely to get nominated in this way.
Also the nominated map are mostly insane map or extreme map, more diversity please.

I feel that a good number of the maps going into the loved category are good enough to be ranked, assuming they followed some more ranking criteria(difficulty spread, single diff non-marathons). Easier maps usually go directly to ranked. Loved is not for maps that follow ranking criteria, and quite simply, most easier maps do. And the ones don't are not very well LOVED, so they don't really belong in this section either.

There are two types of players in this game, players who cannot play difficult maps and play the myriad of other difficulties, and players who are at the level where they do not even consider maps that aren't insane+. Similarly, there are mappers who either play, make, or accommodate easier difficulties, and mappers who only map at the level which they play at, insane+. People who make good maps which accommodate easier difficulties make it through the ranking process, and people who make good maps which do NOT accommodate easier difficulties will never make it through the ranking process unless their song is over 5 minutes long. Loved allows these maps to be recognized, even if they are simply unrankable.

Loved is the category for very hard maps which cannot make it through the ranking process for whatever reason, but are still worth playing/ well liked. You will not be seeing 'more diversity' when it comes to difficulty, as long as the community has a vote.

I don't agree with you (no offence intended) , I just feel that loved section should be for everyone, even those who cannot handle the insane maps, that's why a poll is held so that everyone to be part of it,if loved section is only for a certain type of map then it has lost it's initial purpose, every type of map should be included into the nomination round (except shitty beatmap of course),and let everyone vote.

Avratzzz newme96

There are already a lot of easier diff ranked especially in others gamemodes
(i don't say it's a good idea to only ranked hard stuff tho)

It would have been nice to have 4 maps from each mode instead of giving standard a favorable bias. I understand that standard has the largest player base but I really would've liked to see every mode get an equal treatment :D

Schmaggen Jinjin

there are more standard maps. if you pull 4 of all you give favorite to the game mode that has the fewst maps. everycreator should have the same chance of getting their map loved regardless if they are a taiko mapper or standard.

Ephemeral Jinjin

We're considering this at the moment looking at the turnout for the voting, and we're probably going to end up pulling multiple maps from each of the gamemode pools depending on the voter turnout.

So, expect more than just 1 map to go in, even if that's what the post says at the moment. Very much a 'by the seat of our pants' trial at the moment.

Jepetski Ephemeral

Are Loved maps able to be ranked? As my Blue Zenith is very probably going to the Loved section, it's going to get a lot of plays and opinions on the difficulties, so it kind of eases my job to hunt for mods.

Axertje Jinjin

This is precisely what I was thinking. But then again, I guess we shouldn't be too harsh about since it's only a concept in its beginning stages

JamesHappy Jinjin

yeah i agree with that
