lol they're not obligated to do anything, really. it depends on who's driving the car, what kind of car it is, and how vindictive/spiteful the cop's feeling that day
but yeah, you'll be on a huge stretch of highway with no other cars around you as far as you can see, pass a hill, look over and see the cop but they don't move and then it's like, okay where and when is the other cop gonna show up down the road

No we just don't use it because basically only the US uses it.
Also we do units and stuff in science classes, where even americans use SI units so we definitely don't learn about their stuff.

other than the caveat that there's always the awkwardly enormous cultural influence the united states has impressed on other societies, it still always seemed kind of easy to imagine freedom units being very irrelevant to plenty of people in their own daily lives

it just doesn't really occur to me that it wouldn't be possible for someone to not be all that familiar with conversion, not out of a hatred or aversion for people or politics here, but because you don't have to care about the units used here if you have your own system. i could just guess that are perfectly comfortable using their systems as something very familiar and immediate compared to a unit system that presumably is used more as a matter of business or international communication, and i don't imagine there are necessarily that many people who would be so immersed in those contexts

not that you have to be in order to know of the imperial units, probably. i think the use cases for that would be a bit slim and context-dependent if your life circumstances are not usually affected, but it's not as though people can't learn. but it's one of those things that seems to slip the mind, like metric does with mine-- if the trouble isn't relevance but instead commonality then arguably it's weirder that i or many others here Don't remember or take that much note of metric when far more people use it than those who use the imperial system. i normally just remember the metric units when they're mentioned or when i'm with people outside of the united states, but even then i don't have the conversion familiarized all that well so i'm still searching for the formula each time if it seems like i should invest effort in that, and in most cases i don't really have to, so... it makes sense to me that this relationship could be represented when applied in reverse :o

ultimately, it seems neither perspective had been mutually exclusive nor necessarily inclusive...

...but i suppose it's also fair for it to seem a bit weird one way or the other, in this case how "?" it might appear to not be as readily able to convert with ease

wonky features of relative experience and habits and capacities, practiced and formed in different contexts... love that for us :p

I dont know if I'm hanging around weird communities, but I see mph everywhere and ultimately got used to it, its not a big deal, I preferred to use it this time, it was not a declaration of war against everyone who uses the metric system or an adoration act to the americans.

A velocimeter does the job for you but in the middle of a convo when someone says "It's a mile and a half from here" you need to do mental calculations since your country just doesn't use imperial, like 98% of countries use metric.

no idea who is included in this but i mostly just thought the conversation was funny/strange so i waltzed in and spoke and left;; it doesn't seem like anyone else is saying anything about declarations of war or adoration, rhetorical hyperboles like those don't seem to be relevant at all... i think it was mostly just because one or two people thought that it was a little weird that unit conversions were really not that familiar to others here ^-^;;

your thread is perfectly ok and you're not in weird communities as far as i know, in fact i think there's a fair guess we can make for how you might be more familiarized with imperial units-- cars/driving as interests simply placed you together with people who love driving, and given the relationship the united states (and therefore the imperial units) had with car culture (in manufacturing, trade, arguably even the wider existence of cars themselves as we understand them), many of those people who you've learned from and listened to probably just happen to be either from the united states or very familiarized/affected by their influence indirectly because they themselves have learned from americans

of course it could be for another range of reasons and be affected by any other number of things, and i'm not you so i wouldn't know for sure, but i say all that to convey that i don't really think Anyone in this thread was saying anything unbelievable when considering our variable contexts

if anything i would have just thought it was annoying you that there was a ton of mostly-unrelated text here for you to read lmao

imo this all seems intuitive and understandable, and it's not weird to actually happen to interchangeably know/use imperial either, all i would originally be visiting here to say is that it just doesn't have a universally uniform relationship with people, therefore it doesn't seem like a significant cause for concern

not that i deny this (it seems pretty evident to me that off-topic was always argumentative in some way depending on who was here and who was saying what), and i don't seem to be noticing any kind of clearly-defined time period of off-topic being distinctly/uniquely argumentative now such that i could call it an "arc", but if i may be the tone police... i'm not sure how argumentative sarcasm would be suitable for someone who himself says he "dislikes the argumentative off-topic arc" (and by extension, he presumably dislikes something in the flavor of our own argumentativeness in general at the moment)

unless i'm mistaken about something, idk;; and i imagine poly may not care that much as long as someone is presumably being real with him or something, but... it still is kind of funny/interesting to see our personalities be expressed this way ngl :'p

i completely forgot to add to the actual premise of the thread but i selected "drive at exactly 60 mph", although i probably would have gone lower in reality... i'm much more compliant and risk-averse with most things, and since i'm not really aware of car health and wouldn't know how to identify which problems are significant enough to be concerned about, i would really just trust in the general impression of "if something goes wrong, at least i'm not nearly as likely to be a safety hazard"

also i would probably trust this hypothetical friend to know his car better than i would, if not because of his familiarity with it, then at least because of my inexperience
