mhmm, and that's sort of recognized by most, but in practice it's not really a uniform kind of active recognition to the extent that it can be easily dismissed, in my perception of this scenario. not being serious often doesn't necessarily equate to sarcasm and irony and exaggeration for comedic effect. that, and the difference generally can appear to not be that distinct until you've had time to listen to people for a while, considering that there's now a bit of range in personality where the more callous humor would not sit as well, thanks to it reading basically with a similar tone to anything else anyone might've genuinely meant to sayKarmine wrote:

additionally, some jokes are not necessarily wholly removed from underlying beliefs/perspectives, so someone might react moreso toward the underlying essence that might be signified by a joke existing the way it does to begin with, as jokes emerge often from distinct sections of cultures with a relatively identifiable general proximity to a particular kind of attitude/behavior/perspective/belief
that being said, while someone explains or describes all that for why they might personally be confused or why someone else might be interpreting something with sincerity, the person making the joke is already detached and weary from having to explain that it even is a joke. so in self-interest of convenience, i notice it's kind of common to dismiss and view someone as necessarily stupid for having not been conditioned to recognize that irony/sarcasm. or it might not even depend on that, it could just be someone's mood that allows it to be easily interpretable in some way and it'd happen to intersect with a shit headspace

...a hypothesis, maybe? this difference in interpretation between some populations here could also have an influence carried over from the flavor of sociability, where particularly high-affect pro-social places seem to be more likely to pay attention to this and be caught with a bit of confusion when there's been more of a history of ot being composed mostly of lower-affect bored teen schoolboys and tired old men, so that precedence gets a little shaken by new people (or alternatively the more neurotic and awkward, inclusive of myself and my own flavor of that) where there might be much more comfort in something entirely different
edit: ultimately, it might just have to be some kind of ecosystem where we stick to our respective threads, and/or learn to identify who is more likely to say what and leave it be, but it's pretty easy to neglect that if 1) your perception of people is something akin to them existing to you near-exclusively as blobs of text and an image or two, and 2) you're basically time-blind and vaguely context-blind with low moment-to-moment clarity of mind. you may mostly be in your own head when it comes to that point, and by then it's not really worthwhile to derisively argue over something (hopefully this wouldn't classify as that? i'm bullshitting a conversation through ideas i thought were interesting to me)
