osu! forums is the place besides casual chatting in the client - another way to communicate with osu! players from all over the world. Conversations were mostly on-topic and well thought through. Talking in forums used to be more compressed and carefully considered as this is still a very public place.

Keep posting! But make sure to follow the unwritten forum rules aswell. Stay on-topic. Make sure to post in the correct forum (yes, even if it doesn't add to your post counter, it's really not that important). You don't have to give a reaction to everything possible and above all, not spread over several posts.

As for General Discussion "quality content" really is subjective, though if there's places like Off-Topic or Surveys and your topic possibly could fit there better, you may just post there.

Good recent examples of suitable topics in General Discussion:
  1. Is AI making us less creative?
  2. Opinion on Gen Z?
  3. Pewdiepie is a dad now, Thougts?
  4. I just paid osu!support using cryptocurrencies
  5. What are your experiences with other forums?
A good topic is key in mutual interest. It doesn't have to be questions all the time, too. Being a bit silly is okay sometimes, but shitposting and filling threads with casual smalltalk doesn't belong to GD.

As for Surveys, I highly recommend reading "What is a survey?", says those.
If the topic you're thinking of doesn't fit in GD nor Surveys, it might just be Off-Topic?
If very osu-related, it goes to Gameplay & Rankings.

Remember folks, this isn't Discord. Even though for most of you, you might have encountered with Discord first, which might be the big difference to early forum users to cause the confusion in the first place. What was it like for you?

The last two are good GD threads, but the first 3 aren't really all that, especially when you consider the nature of which it was posted.

If you look at the forum, we have way too many question threads, a stark contrast from a few months ago.

Make GD great again, can't happen as long as people farm post count though, most of the posts (and even entire threads) exist only for that now

Yeah, and chainposting is a big issue too. Got a neat project or high quality thread that you want people to engage in? Too bad, postfarmer3 will bump all threads made before it so that it falls to the bottom of the list. Somehow this happens on OT as well, where postfarming can't exist.

Seriously, chainposting and post farming are ruining the economy!

disabling counter is not gonna happen.

though getting silenced for chainposting/obvious post farming (spamming) is definitely possible. feel free to report aswell

Yeah but as remi said people do that even in OT where there's no post farming so it wouldn't even solve the issue

I never think of reporting :(

which is having required characters to post. For example, you must contain 15 characters to post. (quotes and empty spaces. won't count either). I obviously obtained this idea from MAL.

subforums like off-topic, introductions or any, that doesn't affect postcount, won't count, obviously.

That's a bad idea, you couldn't even reply to a question with "yes" or "no", or something short
It would just make some posts longer for no reason, also wouldn't prevent post farm at all since you could just spam longer posts

Not a bad idea actually, but as Karmine said, you won't be able to say "yes" or "no" without having to fill the empty spaces

Felt like mentioning what I believe the difference is between an OT Post and a General Discussion post. I could have made a separate thread, but it fits here anyway.

Often GD and OT posts can be very similar (minus cultural differences).
There is a huge intention aspect to it, as in how you intend a thread to go.

If you post something on OT, you're pretty much agreeing to memejokes and derailing.
If you post something on GD, you'd likely want real discussions.

It doesn't help that the forum descriptions for both forums are vague, so this is how I'd treat the forums.

The issue is people do talk about general subjects on OT.
With post farmers around though you're more likely to get serious and useful replies on OT than on GD
It seems to have calmed down a bit but at some point all forums were useless because of that

Remember, if you see threads that belong somewhere else, you can also report them and state in the reason where it should get moved to (reporting isn't always negative, instead it helps us a lot to manage these things) :3
