i think i remember visiting here when i was somewhere around that age

not the greatest place to land in, i was not particularly emotionally or charismatically mature and this was not a particularly emotionally or charismatically mature place... but it seems like i had fun and grew a little more socially familiarized with who people were. i hope the same benefits can be present for others at that age too, to outweigh the other factors of being in a mostly insular bubble with this subforum

I don't know, it depends on the type of question. For this particular question about the Wii, I don't think it really matters where I search it.

I usually search on Google when I want to see images or find a website based on a specific image. I also use it to search in an incognito tab "[Anime name] + MAL", then copy the URL that I find and paste it into a regular tab to add the anime to my plan to watch.

Oh, I also use Google to find some information on Reddit. I discovered that if you add "Reddit" at the end of a Google search, it's much easier to find what you want, lol.

I think the only research context in which LLMs are REALLY irreplaceable is when you need to describe something to figure out its name. For example: What's the name of that anime with a generic protagonist who...

I get asking question that require more interpretation like describing a anime, I do that myself too, but just looking for information or something, I would much rather google something and then join a wikipedia link that having that same information be processed through a AI that may hallucinate, also when googling you have like 10 results and with chatgpt you're forced into the one that the AI decided it was the most appropiate, and I like having the freedom of choice

I guess I don't get why you made the switch to full AI whenever it just feels like a inferior version of google for those purpouses

I use it so often that I was pretty sure it wouldn't give a wrong answer in this context. The search tool wouldn't Google it, find the correct answer, and then give the wrong answer. I don't think I need 10 sources to confirm the date the Wii was released (which isn't even important information to me), but ChatGPT searches multiple sources in less than 1 second and gives me a concise and quick answer (although Google is just as quick). In short, in this context, it really doesn't matter how the research is done, and I just asked ChatGPT out of habit.

it's not about choosing sources, it's not about the number of them either, it's about the way chatgpt processes that information and how inprecise the wording generated may be, it's the translation process that is the problem. Today I used chatgpt to study to have them explain something to me and it did give a very missleading explanation. Something that doesn't happen if you just google it

Yes, that's why it depends on the context. With experience, you kind of know what to ask it and what is better to Google.

Asking it when the Wii was invented (especially with search mode on) is basically as reliable as asking it the result of 1 + 1; you simply doubt it will get that wrong. Now, to use it for studying, I would be very cautious (but it still depends on the context).

Also, making prompts that avoid confirmation bias is always essential.

I just accidentally discovered that Gemini has access to the city where you live according to your IP address, and can tell you where you live without you giving any hints. I don't know if this is intentional or concerning, but I haven't seen anyone talking about this anywhere. I think you can use a VPN to trick it.

Yeah google does it too, many websites do.
Even osu! does it.

When you connect to any website without a VPN, you expose your IP address, which can be used to geolocate you. The part concerning is that the AI has access to this information. However, how concerning is that depends on your level of paranoia and distrust behind the individual/group/company behind the model you're using.

I've also just tried Gemini to ask "what's my IP address" and "what's my hometown/city" and besides Deepseek which I think just went online and got the IP address of the data center from where it's running from, ChatGPT and Gemini told me that they can't find this information on their own and gave me advice on how to do it myself.

Did you use a VPN, or did it get it completely wrong?

If it is the second case, try using Gemini 2.0 Flash on a PC and ask, "What is the name of the city I mentioned?".

I don't know if it needs to be this version or if it needs to be on a PC, but it should say your city name correctly now.

Used my PC, asked for my IP adress. This is actually the 3rd attempt, the 2 previous response being "I can't help with that" or something similar. I don't have a VPN.

When asking my location it tells me a random city about 150 kilometers away from me, and it always the same with 5 attempts

It always says my city name consistently when I ask it what the name of the city I mentioned is (even though I haven't mentioned one)...

"of course, but what friends" would probably be the natural response to that, for context i dont really socialize anywhere else and wouldnt know where to find a place i could trust for friendships with people i would trust

so, as a result of my comfort-seeking risk-averse personality, i stay where i am until those places are clear and accessible and perceived to be safe

...granted, im not sure what i was expecting by sharing this, it's only fair that trite complaints get very normal advice

coming back here has reminded me of how absurdly prone to mundane compulsiveness i am (especially when other things take more effort than i want to give in the moment). my brain gets wrecked for it too :7

at least being aware of it now lets me catch myself by the wrist when i start doing it again. i know the core of the issue (brain latches onto anything that gives quick and easy mental stimulation even if it sucks + some form of distraction) and need to find better alternatives

anyways... what i actually came here to post

(image opens link to post on bluesky)

https://temporary-file-garden.link/fixer.user.js

file garden's domain for hosting files has temporarily been blocked, so for anyone who uses it/will inevitably see files hosted on there can use the above to view files from a temporary domain

granted, it may not work for images/stuff used on here but this is on the off-chance it's useful for anyone for elsewhere...

edit: if you have any filegarden links, for now you can replace the "file.garden" with "temporary-file-garden.link" (i.e. manually doing what the tampermonkey script does for your own stuff) (note the domain will expire a week after file.garden is back up but links otherwise shouldn't be affected)

if i feel like it i might post a thread in gd or smthng

I know it's interesting, it was just a joke. That's why I used [s].

I think I should have used /j.

I just had an idea for a thread that seems really interesting, I hope it's possible. If it is, I'll try to finish everything and post it later today (or maybe tomorrow, if it's too difficult).

Yeah, sent a message there, 0 replies. I don't even know if you can see history if you didn't click it before I sent it or if we get notifications on new messages.

Also it would be nice to be able to open it on IRC instead of the website.

This is the second time I discovered how to break the formatting of [code]. The first time was with [box], but it has already been fixed. This second time is much less interesting but uses the combination of [spoiler] and [s] (respectively).

This also breaks a lot more things than [code], but [code] is considered by me to be one of the least "breakable" things, so that's what I used in my example.

Test:

A AA AAA AAAA AAAAA AAAAAA AAAAAAA AAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAA

In case it's already been fixed by the time you're reading this, this is what it looks like:

And that's it. :)

Actually, you don't need to use [spoiler], this works with [b], and probably others too, but I don't feel like testing it right now.
