A monster calls
it was alright
short young adult book about a monster that visits a 13yo and tries to teach him stuff
apparently the original author died before he could finish it and the story was passed to someone else but the end result was pretty good so no one really cared about that fact
The book takes the trope of a monster visiting a kid on their bedroom but twists it in a way so it subverts your expectations somewhat, instead of the monster, being scary and evil they're honestly pretty chill (for the most part) and just tells the protagonist multiple stories
the point of all of these stories is that shit is complicated man, explains that there exists morally grey situations, and even quirks into how people interpret and then recall events that they themselves have lived through
these stories (the first two ones), are basically fairy tails, the point that they're trying to teach the protagonist is pretty crystal clear, which also works in our favour since it makes the book really easy to understand, and given that the actual advice and message the book tries to give is a really good one, it's a good choice
after that, the protagonist is forced to actually put those teachings into practice, which turns out to be more difficult, because guess what, shit is complicated, there is a big difference between hearing what the moral of the story is and actually internalizing it, which is what the book mainly focuses on the second half
while this book didn't completely resonate with me, it was still enjoyable and I really can't point to any mistakes or anything, as I really didn't feel anything was off or anything like that
placed in B tier
----------
Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Die Neue These: honestly I've already finished the part that was requested but I liked it quite a bit and honestly I want to follow it to completion, so yeah, see me in a year and a half whenever I have actually finished this
still playing The Thaumaturge, started act 2 a few days ago, game is enjoyable but it does have some problems I will talk about
next: blood meridian
