I think the problem with you two is that you move more in term of fandoms than in term of actual works. Like, for me, I just watch read a book enjoy it and move on, you guys are more about the community and stuff like that which aren't things I really rate highly

it's alright

pretty famous stop motion animation movie by tim burton. The plot is about a man that accidently marries a corpse, the entire movie revolves around the typical story of "oh what if you couldn't marry the person you loved", there isn't any real new nuance to it.

The movie is also a musical, the songs achieve their goal. They tell the plot properly and they're in fact songs, however, there wasn't any song that impacted me or whatever, the music is just fine

The actual aesthetic of the movie and character design are pretty on point. It's a movie that has a very unique look. It also takes advantage of the fact that it's an animated movie and makes the shape of the characters all pretty different. ALl the characters are easily recognaisable which is always good. What I will point out it's that I find it pretty funny that even the female skeletons have their chest covered like if they had bone titties, honestly, accidental comedy.

this is not really an ambitious movie or anything that tries too hard, but it's still an enjoyable watch regardless

----- Millenium actress -----

First ever satoshi kon movie i've seen, pretty good.

Millenium actress is a movie about an old film star who dissapeared, a now 30 years later she is telling the story of her life, thing is, her memory fails her, as she starts mixing the movies and reality.

While the movie requires a little of brainpower to understand, the story is actually very straight forward. She just keeps pushing forward in life, and that key is a representation of that. The key isn't an actual key but more a metaphorical representation of some of her feelings.

I think this movie is really well done, it feels pretty unique, and yeah, i'm open to watching more satoshi kon in the future

put in B tier

------ The animatrix -------

Matrix anime anthology, suprisingly good

i'm not the biggest fan of anthologies, but this one was good. The animation is surprisingly polished, and a lot of the plots are very interesting, honestly, I wish a lot of this made it to actual matrix movies. I found that story on how the robots revolutionized actually pretty interesting. I haven't watched matrix 4, so I don't know if it takes inspiration from this

This anthology series is more sympathetic to both the matrix and the robots, and it really explores the consequences of a matrix existing a lot more deeply than in the movies I feel, which is a direction I actually love.

Also another thing is that sigma males have absolutely ruined matrix for me, like, at times a character said "that is because i've taken the red pill" and i'm like please dont say that.

I am NOT doing chuck e cheese party games
so chuck e cheese is NOT blacklisted? ok well go fly to america, canada, or australia, enter a chuck e cheese, and play every single game and review all of the games. iirc every chuck e cheese has at least 50 games inside, so maybe bring a friend or two. and also, review all of the baby rides too. so photo ride with chuck, chuck e's drawing machine, etc. also, go inside the playtubes. review them.

then repeat this process until you have reviewed every single chuck e cheese in the selected country (america, canada or australia)

finished Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai!

I have opinions

This is a weird 90's OVA. And I personally didn't really enjoy it too much. The story is about a girl that travels back in time and goes to live with their ancestors. After that, the family starts to collapse and the space police gets involved.

This feels less of an anime and more of a theater play. There is very little actual animation or movement. Most of the shots are static shots of the characters looking at the camera. And a lof of the time, instead of actually doing any action, they are either repeating what happened in a previous chapter or just saying some other thing

The actual story is fine, but I think that there are a lot of scenes that really just makes the anime drag. For example, each chapter (with the exclusion of the last one) starts with a fake documentary, that while it is funny. I don't see it contributing much to the actual anime

I don't really have much else to say, I finished it but I didn't really quite get into it

The mockumentaries in the beginning are mostly a foreshadowing on what is going to happen or a metaphor to analyze what are the characters doing. Take in the first episode:
SPOILER
The cockoo is a metaphor for what Maroko was going to do to the family, she infiltrated in there and was the cause why the family collapsed, taking each egg out of the nest, just like Maroko managed to leave behind each member of the family on each episode.

Also yeah recommended it because of the unusualness factor, while I did enjoy the interactions and the quirky dialogue, as well as the wtf factor that the overall anime had. I can agree that the pacing is quite slow and not for everyone, but there was summary movie that lasts like 70% of what the story which I think I should have recommended instead but I don't recommend stuff I haven't watched even if I know the story.

song of the long march:

This is a fairly famous manhua. It's about this girl, who is part of the elite of society, who gets caught in a war. It's a mix of interpersonal drama and military strategy.

The panel structure is overall standard, but during the first 20 chapters or so, you had the 3-gatsu no lion black lines, which I appreciate seeing. For those who hasn't read 3-gatsu no lion (everyone reading this). I mean this (screenshot from 3-gatsu since I don't remember in which chapters this appeared in song of the long march)

you have two active conversations going on at the same time, the ones happening in the actual patterns, and then, the narration happening in the black rectangles. However, this concept gets droppead really early on and afterwards everything in terms of art and structure is pre3tty standard

honestly I don't have much to say about this. It doesn't really to do anything crazy or whatever, it's just a pretty normal manhua all things considered

also as far as I know this manga is on hold with no signs of returning

samurai champloo:

this is cowboy bebop but slightly worse

completely episodic anime, even more than cowboy bebop as new we don't get new main characters during the runtime of the anime or whatever. The episodes themselves are pretty simple, none of them are particullary mind-blowing or something I hadn't seen before.

The OST is worse than in cowboy bebop, I don't like that rap/beatbox style they went for on this anime. I also think the characters have less chemistry than on cowboy bebop

There is a filler chapter at chapter 12 so that is also kinda bad

This anime doesn't really try anything new, and it's just a worse version of another anime that already exists, don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it, but I don't know, it definitively could have been better

Caroline:

it was good, i'm not the demographic tho

halloween movie about this kid that moves and discovers an alternate dimension. The art was good, nothing mindblowing. Like in most western animation, all of the characters are different shapes, this works to make the characters more easily recognisable. Their personalities are also greatly exaggerated, these aren't very well fleshed out characters that really feel humans and there is a lot of nuance to them, most characters just have one or two character trains associated with them, this works because the actual story isn't too complex, and none of the characters are actually hateable or anything like that

As i've said, the story is pretty simple, it honestly follows the formula of all of those stories about someone who walks into the mirror and discovers a different world, there really isn't much to say in terms of plot

This was a enjoyable watch, however, it's not the type of thing i'm personally really into. It isn't particullary ambitious or new, it's good if you just want to watch pretty colors and be entertained for a while, but for me, that's about it. The fact that I watched this only a few days after I watched All About Lily Chou-Chou (my new favourite movie), didn't help either lmao

I forgot I promised that

there isn't much to say so far in terms of actual plot so far. The actual unedited docs had pretty bad english from both of you, but that's why i'm here, your book seems a lot like a weird furry fanfiction and manishhh seems to go for a more comedy style, both of you write dialogues in this almost theatrical way which is strange to me

it's a start, for sure better than the ot!book IMO

--- the nightmare before christmas ---

turns out I had already seen this movie like it was originally intented, in high school, near the end of the school year, in english class when the teacher just wanted their vacations already so they put a movie and forget about teaching that day, and of course, I didn't pay attention as I was talking with my friends and crushing over girls, not only that, but the movie is like an hour and a half and you normally don't see more than 50 minutes of a movie during a class (because the actual class is an hour long total)

pleasantly surpised about the actual movie tho. I think that in terms of western animated movies this has to be one of the better ones, if not my favourite currently. It uses stop motion, but the fact that it's older than something like corpse bride gives it more charm, since it's even more apparent that it's stop motion. The movie is a musical and the OST is like actually really fucking good, features "this is halloween" like that song is already better than any other song from any animated western musical

the actual plot is very simple, nothing too special about it, it's just that the combination of the art and ost that just creates a really enjoyable movie

since you recommended so much at once i'm going to be slightly more picky than usual to not bloat the queue too much, sorry

I don't think I will be playing kingdom hearts, mainly because it's split in a lot of different consoles and emulating some of the recent ones may be a struggle (+ it's a really long franchise)

the world ends with you was already recommended by an IRL friend, so will play it

I'm fine with giving a second try to re:zero and watching mob psycho

I actually started Follow the Clouds North-NorthWest like a year ago, but didn't end up finishing it, so may give it a second show

will read Dragon and Chameleon

edit: also, since you seem to be new to the forum, let me informe you, I'm slow and the queue is long, so I may start watching/playing/reading your reqs in like a month or two

edit 2: also, do I know you? your name sounds familiar ngl

edit 3: apparently, I had no reqs for mangas/books at the moment so I will start reading Follow the Clouds North-NorthWest right away

Hokuhokusei ni Kumo to Ike

I gave this a try a year ago, didn't get into it, but now, I actually did get into it

Don't let anyone fool you, I don't care what anyone says, this is a slice of life. The manga starts trying to do drama/mistery type of thing, but that really only gives motivation for the main character to just go out into iceland and showcase cool natural formations. I feel that this in part is needed, because unlike other SoL, the main character isn't a cute teenage japanese schoolgirl, but a pretty cool and chill adult guy, so there needs to be a hook to actually get people to read it

The art is really good, definitively above average, as I said earlier, it really focuses on the environment, they often use these aereal shots of the entire area, which are extremely pretty.

Outside the main character, there really aren't any "fixed" second characters, the one accompaning the main protagonist always changes with each volume

my only real complain is that there are some things that aren't quite expanded or explored as much as I would like, for example the fact that the main character talks to his car

good manga overall

----- monster (2023, not the anime from 2004, or the american movie from 2003) -----

This is a japanese movie by director hirokazu kore-eda, i've actually seen multiple films from this guy, i've seen nobody knows and shopliftes. This director seems to specialize in dramas involving families, however these are NOT family movies as some of these are emotionally painful (mainly nobody knows)

monster is a very unique film, it showcases a very difficult case of bullying from 3 different perspectives, in order, the mother perspective, the teacher perspective, and the child perspective. The timeline of the movie starts with a totally unrelated fire happening somewhere in town, you know you've went to the past and changed perspective by that fire appearing again. Neither the mother or teacher have an actual clear and accurate perspective of the situation, as they're competely filled with external bias, meaning that they see the exact same events in totally different ways.

the child's perspective is the most interesting tho, turns out, that the root problem of the issue was a conflict that involved him protecting another kid who was gay, adding another whole dimension to the already complicated problem. Japan is not really the most tolerant country for LGBT people, so if there is a case like this, it actually makes it very difficult for the kid to actually speak up about the actual situation out of fear or having consequences for taking that stance in support of LGBT people. After that, the teacher understood the situation in a very different way and the mother understood in a very different way, adding a layer of distortion each time, making things worse and worse.

It's also important to say that while the mother's and teachers perspective aren't pure or "true", I don't really think they were wrong, that distortion of the original problem has created another entirerily different issue, and that problem is as worthy of being solved and creating emotional distress as any other.

I really enjoyed this movie, had watched it in the past, It's my second favourite movie of last year (my top 1 is la sociedad de la nieve) and I find the fact that maestro was nominated in the oscars over this really fucking funny if not insulting, but as we know the oscars are very america-focused so it was to be expected

Ongoing manga, has potential but I think it will end up disapointing me on the end

the manga is about two people who swap bodies, one of them is a very popular mangaka who has created something as popular as dragon ball or naruto or whatever and someone who has 0 individuality but is really fucking good at copying other people. Now the one who is very good at copying is on the body of the successful mangaka and the succesful mangaka is forced to start over and try to publish something new

this concept is very interesting, you can explore a lot of stuff with this, mainly, how much does the fandom and the community aspect of a work affect the actual percieved quality of the end product. And with the other guy, how discrimation can happen torwards newer mangakas and how for someone as talented as them, they cant seem to get something serialized, much less actually recreate the success of the previous manga

The second half I spoke about, about how hard it is to become serialized is true, however, the manga seems to go in a direction that reminds me more of action shonen or sport manga than something like blank canvass which was more of what I was expecting. There are a lot of panels and scene that shows like a dragon forming when the guy picks up the pen to draw and everything is very over the top and whatever. This mainly applies for the person who copies (the chameleon in the title), as this character doesn't seem to exist to make a cool point or get in interesting moral or ethical situation, but more to act as an antagonist, which I guess it's fine, but honestly makes me less excited about the future of the manga

so far this is an enjoyable read tho, I recommend it
