I watched the first 2 seasons of kaguya-sama when it was airing and then read the rest of the manga, and honestly, i'm conflicted about it (I watched this so long ago so my descriptions may not be the most accurate)

The premise of the anime is that there are these two smart students that love each other but don't want to confess, and they try to get the other person to confess. Most scenes are divided into hyper psychological battles that parodies other animes like death note were the protagonist just has an internal monologue that lasts the entire chapter

and well, the first 2 seasons are fine, they're funny at times even if they don't have that much depth (with the exception of ishigami which they do dirty later on the anime) but it doesn't need to have depth, since it's just a dumb funny comedy

what happens after is what really annoys me about the anime

so, there is a confession, and you thought the anime would end up there, since that was the entire point of the anime, however it continues for an entire school year. The entire psychological battle thing is dropped, and the comedy relies on the secondary characters like chika, which i'm sorry but were not as fun as the actual battles.

They also try to push the anime into a more romance/drama style and in my personal opinion, it just fails, all of the plots aren't really that interesting and it just feels worse than everything that came before it

however, I remember that in season 2, there was actually a really good plot surrounding ishigami, in the middle of this comedy anime, we see the entire backstory and character development of this random side character, and well, it's funny because it's unexpected, this is not how this genre of anime works, and it's so surprising it catches your attention, the story is also short, and when it ends, chika brushes it off and we continue with the anime, this was a good little arc, and again, the drama segment works because it's in the context of a comedy anime

so whenever you try to do that same arc, but longer, while also dropping the comedy. I'm sorry but the kaguya family drama didn't hit nearly as hard as the ishigami backstory

This anime feels like it also uses hype as a weapon, (this is the same mangaka as oshi no ko), it's set in the modern era, like, literally the same year as it was being released. It takes advantage of a lot of current events and trends, there are vtubers and youtube in this anime, I think this has to be one of the first anime to even reference vtubers, not only that, but this anime is available everywhere in every single language. This anime was meant to be seen as it was being released and just be part of that cultural phenomenon.

Let's not forget about chika dance, a special ending that seems to basically be created to be a fun cutesy dance that would spread over the entire internet, and I have to say, it worked

as I said, the mangaka later made oshi no ko which was just this turned up to 11, the entire story is about a popular topic (vtubers) but it also has reincarnation, a catchy opening and the first episode is twice as long, also it's from this popular mangaka so be sure to watch it!!!, and well, it worked for chapter 1 and then just fell off lmao since there really wasn't any meat to it

I really don't know, placed in b tier since I liked it at the beginning but with the passage of time and the next parts being released it just fell off

-------------------------------

Uzumaki

I've heard a lot about junji ito, however, I had always brushed it off because it was not my genre, it's in fact my brother's favourite author so I kinda picked this up with curiosity, it gave me a good excuse to actually get out of my comfort zone and read it (which is the entire point of this thread btw!)

... I expected it to be different?

The entire manga is focused on showing you all of this horrors beyond human comprehension and cool art, and while I agree that in paper they're scary and the art is really good, I feel the manga really moves too fast to actually feel fear, I don't care about a character dying in a very awful way if I don't have an emotional connection to the characters

Not only that, but some parts are just accidently funny??????, like when the hair starts forming spiral and then she finds the other girl who also has spirals in her hair and then just start fighting with their hairs like it's a shounen

The art is really good tho, and junji ito recognises this and just leans HARD into it. The entire plot of the manga is the spiral, the shape. And well, the art is completely fulled of spirals and this has consequences on the story, the art is also made to be more realistic, kinda reminds me to how someone like naoki would draw characters (which after finishing the manga I noticed that it was published in the same magazine as naoki), it's more cinematic so it's closer to how an horror movie or whatever would actually be.

Junji ito understands that if you're taking half of the runtime of your manga to include horrors beyond your comprehension, those horrors must directly advance the story. Everything is plot relevant and in really cryptic ways too. There is this ambiguity and mystery on the story because it's both scarier to not know what is going on exactly and because the horrors beyond human comprehension are cryptic by themselves, if you're trying to convey a story without using words in certain segments, that story can't be extremely specific or it will be really hard to actually understand.

but yeah, I just couldn't get into it lmao

As a guy who has read like 90% of Junji ito's manga's

Yeah all are not that heavy into the story, most of the short stories are just concepts and like "what if" scenario's of spooky stuff happening and while terrifying and cool by concept and has fantastic art, the characters and sorta of plot is meh

And while Uzumaki is more into the plot and is one of the longer ones, the story isnt that great and kinda gets not that interesting for the guys there, but more curious on how the heck the village will all roll up in the end.

Really kinda knew this was not your thing and unfortunately, this is considered as one the best or better Junji ito mangas
Though some of the other story are still worth a try due to the cool concept and art.

so yea

hyouka:

slice of life/mistery anime which is pretty good if I said so myself

the plot is that there is this high school student who is very lazy but he's pretty good at solving misteries so his classmates from the club kinda ask him to solve shit

first of all, due to this being a regular slice of life on a regular school, all of the mistery are overall simpler things, stuff like "hey I saw this weird thing at school, can you try to find out what it is?", the actual pull of the mistery is trying to solve it, not so much the history implications or the drama surrounding it, which often happens in anime misteries (i'm not saying this as something negative, this is one of my fav genres lol)

the actual misteries are pretty convoluted and pretty hard to figure out unless you're paying REALLY close attention to everything, which to be fair, I didn't, I kinda just chilled with it and went like "woah" when the solution was revealed

this led to an amazing subversion of the genre in what I think is by far the best arc on the anime, the movie mistery. The plot is that the film club was making a movie but the writer got sick and they need someone to try to solve the mistery so that they can finish recording the film, they do all the typical stuff and get to the conclusion, you heard the explanation and go like "oh yeah that makes total sense", every character accepts it, they go "oh wow you're very smart" and then just move on

and then it's revealed that they were actually just wrong, but due to the actual reputation of the main character and how convoluted and out there the explanation was, everyone just trusted him, and now the characters must face the consequences of being wrong. I think that was fucking amazing since it's not something that really happens in this genre

That is another thing I really enjoyed about this anime and that is, all of the social interaction between the characters. There is a big focus on the psichology of the characters, the pressure that it's put on the main character, the reputation, the fame of the club, etc. And again, for a genre that mainly focuses on all of the clever logic and more mental side of things, also having a good ammount of social stuff is great

animation is excelent too didn't mention it

Slice of life manga about a girl and a weird outwordly creature just chilling and being cute, my favourite genre

I don't really have much to say about this manga, it doesn't really to do anything too ambitious, all of what this manga tries has alread been done by mangas such as girls last tour, shuumatsu touring or rojica to rakkasei, still, it is pretty cute and enjoyable to read

re:zero

this fucking sucks ass (watched only season 1)

so this is a power fantasy isekai anime where a guy gets transported to another world and whenever he dies in that world, he resurrects at a "checkpoint", so kinda like groundhog day in that sense

The anime tries to express how being reincarnated into another world is not a good thing, stuff like not being able to read because the language is different or how his money isn't useful (But hey, he still talks the same langauge and everyone else and have cool magical powers that also like only 1% of the population has so yeah we love consistency!!!)

I don't think the anime does a good job at this at all, mainly because all of the problems that subaru faces aren't because of the world itself, but because he gets himself into those problems

So in reality this anime mainly works as a power fantasy, seeing someone that you can relate to (at least during the beginning) struggle and fail at something until they finally become strong and defeat the evil bad guy and get all of the women

thing is, there is nothing I hate more in media that seeing the character you hate the most succeed and for that to be depicted in a good way (like if a villain who is supposed to be evil wins, that's badass, but if the protagonist who is supposed to be good ends up being an asshole and then wins, that is when it feels very bad), and subaru is just the biggest example of this

subaru is a complete and total asshole, he just does whatever he wants, making everyone life worse, and all out of his own ego. And no, he isn't redeemed by the end of it. Also, every line that he spats is just cringe, as he always talks in anime/videogame terms and it's just awful

Metal Gear Solid 2

like the first one but better, and even more political which is sick I hope more games weren't afraid to be political

This game is considered to be one of the best games ever made, to that I disagree, but I agree it's pretty good overall

Compared to the first one, the gameplay is slightly better but still mostly ass, there is backtracking and the pc port sucks ass and I had to install mods for it in order to run properly and whatever. The story is way better

The story starts with snake doing cool shit because the first section of the game worked as a demo for the game, so yeah, the first part only serves as a tutorial and as marketing, the level is small, it avoids the pitfalls of the actual full game (such as backtracking) and shows unique interactions (like throwing someone overboard) that really aren't a thing in the actual game

The story main focus are politics and conspiracy, it takes advantage of the current political situation of the world to actually tell the story, it's not coincidence that the first boss in the game, in the demo, has a russian accent. Just by knowing that this is a game about spionage and that character portrayed as evil is russian, the story tells itself

Another example of this is the reveal of the "patriots", a group that is above the government and had the government as a puppet, saying both sides of the political spectrum are the same thing, and the ones actually running the world are often less known, for example, CEOS of oil companies and that everyone has fell for their trick, again, kojima doesn't really need to explain shit with this, everyone knows what the concept is and it allows for better storytelling later on. You assume you alraedy know the situation, so when the reveal at the end of the happens, that the patriots were dead for over 100 years, it hits harder. This also reinforces the themes of propaganda the game has, no one is inmune to it, and you fell for it.

During that segment of the game, a lot of meta elements are used, which were very new at the time. The game over screen pops up over and over again even if you haven't failed for example. This kinda breaks the barrier between game and reality, makes you feel less safe. After all of that happens, whenever the speech happens, you're pay closer attenetion, the line between game and reality has been distorted, so you hear more closely at about what the game has to say and relate it to the real world more than you were already doing.

The topic of propaganda comes in over and over again, in this last arc of the story involves an AI, which tells you, that in the future (so modern day), the best way of censorship would be propaganda. If you censor something, you're giving more attention to it, however if you create a context for it, you can turn that story in whatever way it suits you, and it's a lot harder for people to notice that the narrative is being distorted.
,

also, this month was released only 1 month after 9/11, so sadly, there wasn't enough time for kojima to develop a game tackling the war on terror (honestly, if 9/11 had happened before MGS1 released that game would be way better lmao)

This game has a lot more depth and complexity but tbh I'm kinda tired and I'm not going to write a 20 page document of all the themes and implications of mgs2, point is, lots of politics, which is good.

Mob Psycho 100 (all 3 seasons)

Coming of age anime mixed with a shounen.

Mob Psycho 100 is about a guy who is really dumb and also has super cool psychic powers and works in an agency of exorcism under a boss who doesn't have psychic powers but he has a lot of charisma so he convinces everyone that he does.

This anime is made by the same creator of one punch man, but unlike one punch man, this never derails into an actual serious anime, this stays mostly as a gag shounen all the way through, and that is good.

There really isn't much that this anime does that other anime doesn't, it's all pretty standard, the only thing that I could really point out is the meter that fills up over episodes, which builds up hype for the season finale

I enjoyed it

American movie about cars because yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh carts sport america yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (jk)

In all seriousness, this movie isn't really particullary ambitious or anything, it's a movie made to be enjoyable, to profit on a certain audience (nascar fans), and maybe give a little information on the origin of a certain series of racecars

It has a tried and true structure, it has a lot of drama however none of it is particullary high stakes or too stressful to the viewer, the cinematography and sounds deisgn is good, you can really hear the engines of the cars and stuff, and the entire final race is honestly coreographed like it was the final fight scene of another movie

This format kinda guarantees the movie will be good (as long as they don't fumble the execution, which they didn't do), but it also creates a glass ceiling, it's enjoyable, but unless you're REALLY into the topic at hand beforehand, no one is really going to consider it their favourite movie, it's just a very safe movie in all fronts

Lisa: The Painful

I'm mixed about this game

for context, I had a lot of people talk to me about lisa over the years, more now these last few days since it became free on epic. I initiall tried playing when I was 12 but bounced away from it for obvious reasons

I ended up enjoying the game, but man, I do think this game a couple of MASSIVE flaws, the story and theme are fine, my problems are on the level design and the combat

My problem with the game can be summarized in a single moment. I was in a cave, I reach the end of the cave, the exit is blocked, I'm halfway through the game, I remember a moment like this before in the game where I exited the cave and I got ambushed. I was like, not this time, I open my inventory, I search for the quick travel item, and... it isn't there. No narrative reason, no warning, not consistent with the rest of the game. I exit the cave, I get ambushed, next scene I look at my inventory, the quick travel item has reappeared.

There are a lot of situations on the game where you know something is going to happen, you have a way to avoid it, but the game just REFUSES to let you do it. And whenever that is tied to a serious story moment, it just devalues the emotional impact of that moment. If my character is forced to do something awful, I want that action to feel like the only option, to be morally grey, not seeing a way I can avoid it, for the game to limit me to take the awful action. That just felt dumb

Some story options ended up also felt like a bit of a scam. In two parts of the game you're faced with losing party members or an arm. I chose to lose party memebers both times. However, with time I realized that what I did was pointless since all the OP skills DIDN'T require of any arms, so I was like, this was objectively the wrong choice, which sucked ass

Another thing that annoyed me is the fact that there are illusory walls with often no indication, I was literally crashing into every wall to see if it was fake or not, and some of them were, but damn, it was annoying.

The combat is too RNG heavy, some enemies have just instakill attacks that if they use you basically lose the fight and have to restart, so you just have to pray they don't use it. The fact that XP cant overflow into the next level is one of the worst videogame mechanics I've seen ever

However, even with all of those problems, the game is still really original at times, and it's still enjoyable, so placed in B tier

why the fuck are you obsessed with this (+ the lisa thing I actually wrote it in spanish first to send it to someone on discord)

you absolute BAFOON, I have ALREADY read jojos bizarre adventure (up to part 7, haven't read 8 and 9 yet)

it's pretty mid

Starting off with part 1, it's just pretty bad, the art is extremely rough, the story is basically nosense and just an excuse for the protagonist to fight, and it really doesn't do anything better to other works in the genre

Part 2 is a clear improvement from part 1, and has what probably is one of the best plots in jojos, however it is quite generic and not the most interesting. However, even in the colored version, the art is rough, I can't really say any stand-out panels

Part 3 is one of my personal favourites, the start is pretty bad, but it is probably the part of jojos that specs into comedy the hardest, this is also where they introduce stands, which are basically super cool powers that have humanoid form, and they really take advantage of it here. The stands in this part works to subvert your expectatives of the story. You assume the only thing the stand is going to do is just fight, however, they show how those powers can be applied to other tasks during the gambling arc. The art is still not great (and to get it out of the way, no part of jojos has particullary good art). The end fight is fuckign amazing, dio from part 1 being the end enemy for the part is just really fucking cool. They're also very overpowered, so again, they use the stands in smart and clever ways to defeat dio

Part 4: heyyyyyyyyyyyyy remember all of what I said about using the stands in cool ways?, well you cant forget about that buecause during the part 4, 5, 6 they're just really cool powers and that's about it. This part has no plot, no stakes, it's basically the yuru camp of shouens, they just fight and showcase stands, I dislike this part

Part 5: This is basically part 4, I have nothing really to add to this other than the setting was cool

Part 6: This really illustrates my problem with jojos. It's just pure fanservice in the form of stands. By this point, the stands have become so core to the ADN of jojos that it seems that it's the only thing that is really getting any attention, the characters in this part are the weakest in terms of writing. The stands are the only thing that matters, and that is, because for these last 3 parts, is what the community enjoyed the most out of jojos, the comedy aspect is worse than in part 3 because it's trying to focus more on the fights, and given the sheer quantity of stands introduced in these parts, all of them have a lot less screentime and less interesting applications

This part is also the jojos part with the most fanservice, it's sort of a "EVERYONE IS BACK!" type of part, which fucking sucks IMO. This part tries nothing new, and it's just everything wrong with jojos

Part 7: this one is good. The setting of a race is both very original and fits in very well with jojos. It isn't the most developed story, as it's more focused on the fights, but it gives a quite clear direction for the manga. It isn't very stand-focused and it's more character-focused, having probably some of the best written characters in jojos. This part is both the riskiest jojo part and it worked, therefore making it the best part of jojos

Still, while it's the best part of jojos, I don't think there is much to praise about it outside of that. Other than having a very unexplored setting, I don't feel it's doing crazy shit, I don't think you're missing out on anything for not reading it.

EF: A tale of memories

mid

This anime premsie is a romance between a regular guy and this girl that only has 13 hours of memory. The premise is pretty sick but tbh they don't do enough with it

The anime sets up a pretty interesting question, how important are memories in our lifes?, if you woke up tomorrow, with no memories, would you be the same person?, would your personality change?

Not only that, but this girl in the anime uses a diary to try to make an effort to remember her life. This is fucking AMAZING, with that you're opening the door to more cool shit like, what memories do you decide to maintain?, what memories do you let go?, how do you know the diary, and therefore, your memories (and therefore, your life) hasn't been tampered with?, if someone did you would have no way to know

This isn't the firs anime to try to tackle this concept, the yuri manga "Bloom Into You" actually has a story arc dedicated to this. In that story, there is a theater play, about a girl who wakes up with amnesia, she is very confused about everything, specially, who they are as a person. Shortly after the girl wakes up, different persons walk into her room and try to make her remember, her brother, her friends, her girlfriend, etc. However, they all give different descriptions of what person she was, although, they were all contradictory. She apparently had like 4 different personalities (here you have the concept of social masking and stuff), and she doesn't know who she was in reality. So she decides the only personality she can say for sure it was true, is the one she currently had. Deciding to forget her previous life and start over, not being tied down by her past, and doing things that she knows would be true to herself.

The way this anime responds those questions is by... not doing so. The anime isn't really interested in the process of how a life like this would play, as the condition isn't treated as a philosophical dillema, but as a moe element. The condition isn't used to make a cool story, but to make the girl look cute and defenseless.

This isn't the only romance in the anime either, we also have a b-plot and even a c-plot, and while they're all connected in the drama, they're not really connected by a thematical string. The ammount of characters really reduce the screentime each one recieves. You would think the second season helps on this, but not really, it just expands the story of some secondary characters (which honestly were my least liked characters in the anime...), and i'm sory, but none of them are as cool as the one that I described, which was the one used to actually sell the anime

All of this makes a lot more sense when you think about how this anime was sourced from a visual novel, more specifically, an eroge. The original game was basically a dating simulator, VN's and eroges were instrumental in creating what we know now as moe, so it makes sense that it would be like this, still, I do think there is wasted potential in this premise.

This anime was created by studio SHAFT, so that means, more experimental/ambitious in the art department. While shaft did get some pretty cool shots and scenes, they're used without rhyme or reason, the story doesn't take advantage of the art, it's just cool shots for the sake of having cool shots. I'm grateful the shots exist, but I can't think of it as something else than wasted potential

Even in other shaft anime, like madoka magica, shaft uses some wacky artstyle to really represent the world of madness madoka is trying to depict, nothing similar happens here

placed in C-tier, could have been cool but it really wasn't

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

snake wasn't canibalized 0/10 refunded the money I didn't pay for it

personally a slight step down from 2, the gameplay is still ass, probably even more ass, since they add a lot of mechanics that are very annoying but I guess it does help the game in a more narrative level, so I can excuse it

When metal gear solid 2 was released, there was a lot of controversy around it, what do you mean I can't play as snake???? what do you mean the protagonist is raiden????? raiden is a fucking loser,,,,,,,. Metal gear solid 3 feels like the sequel the fans wanted, so a lot of things are put in place to make snake look badass. You're not just sneaking around following a cool drama story. You're surviving on the jungle, eating whatever you can get your hand on, there are helicopters flying around you, you're the strongest on melee combat, you're a hero by all metrics

I think there is a pretty big difference between playing as snake and playing as raiden. When you're playing as raiden, you're a lot more analytical about the information you recieve. You know raiden is an unreliable narrator, that he's missing part of the story, and you that have more context on the game, know more than raiden. With snake the opposite is true, snake has never betrayed the player, therefore, when snakes says something, or trusts someones, we don't really suspect on that person as much, this allows the more simplistic story of MGS3 (simplistic when compared to 2), still feel really interesting. The story is way less convoluted and a lot more predictible than in 2, but by being framed as snake, we don't expect the twists as much.

In a way, snake is also made to be more relatable to the player. There is one character that is always half naked for some reason, so when snake shows interest in her, we're supposed to go "YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THAT'S MY MANNNNNNNNNNNNN", so when the story finishes, in a way, all of the criticism torwards snake, of how he was easily fooled by EVA, is a criticism to the player. You were distracted, you were so into the fantasy of being snake that you made mistakes. Metal Gear solid 3 makes us appreciate raiden.

also, the bossfight against boss is probably one of the most beautiful shots i've seen in a videogame, and whenever you defeat her and the petals of the flowers turn red, that's honestly peak

also I just want to say the pc port runs like fucking ass and i've had to reinstall the game multiple times to finish the game lmao

Placed in A tier, will play MGS4 and 5 In the future but I wont note them on this thread.
