depends. osu! as a general game is pretty dead but surely becoming more and more popular. osu! as a rhythm game is the most alive ever.

TLDR rhythm games are overshadowed by other genres, we just have a smaller community.

osu's actually gotten much popular in 2021 and 2020 because of covid and quarantine.

It actually has 35-40k online in september 2021

Even if you compare the ammount of active users in 2019 and 2021 there's still a huge difference.

hi... im new.. but averagin 20k or more daily is not bad actually ( if ur not comparing to big games like minecraft etc ), i would could consider osu is a game that is kind of dead but very alive, if ur deep into the community u will feel osu is really active or full but at the other end sometimes u could feel this game is really not that popular, not very active, and a lot of players left the game and made this game considered nearly dead. either way i think osu could die anytime but i wouldnt care cuz even tho ive been playing only for 2 hours im really enjoying this game even tho im trash too but i hope this game would be more popular than ever.

for comparison, 2-3 years ago i've mostly seen ~15-17k. right now it's at 16k so i'd say it's around the same as it has been the last few years. still i'd be happy to see it growing instead of stagnating but since we still have lazer in the making i think things are looking pretty good :3
How much is it now??
nico-
I think it depends, if were talking about playable content and the playerbase, its alive as heck, BN's Kinda dead tho

whats dead in osu! is improvisation, its using the same old methods and playstyles without much changing, although we have lazer now, its still not complete, and I personally think BN system sucks, it can be improved very much

but then again, osu! is indie, and I love it as a game overall, in conclusion, some aspects are dead, but some are more alive then ever before :>

I think it's alright.

it's dead because i'm not playing it
JustABeginner
It's also the same as:
It's alive because I'm playing it.

Whatever the answer is it depends on how do they think.
What I think of "dead" basically is majority won't play it anymore, the number of players who supports osu! keep declining and so on.
Kurboh
Well, osu is a program, and programs aren't living creatures, so, it's dead
Ghostals_old
dead.. :/

osu isnt dead but it is dying

I think this game isn't dead at all: the community is really growing, especially these last years.
-Poka-
osu! is honestly impressive, out of so many online games that existed lots of server got shutdown, if youre lucky enough the server got shutdown like a decade later, but osu! still stays nicely and its now has been like 15 or 16 years old now

edit: osu! community is as old as the tf2 community btw

It's not as popular as Minecraft or Fortnite yeah, but it doesn't mean that it's a little game and that nobody talks about it

In the rhythm game scene, it is one of the most popular games of all time ironically (even if a lot of the scene denies it vehemently.) In terms of gaming in general, it is comparable to MMOs in active userbase and pretty well known, but not on levels with actual big games
[-Omni-]
i dont think it is? it just isnt as popular of a game
anaxii
Osu game is osu game
Aireunaeus
It actually depends from the person actually. Technically, osu is still alive and well but the term “dead” is rather used in a trending way. So the term “osu! Is dead” is mostly used by osu! Players, that are less active or doesn’t even play the game anymore and thinks that the playerbase has been decreased and “osu is not dead” is rather from newer or active ones that still play osu.

I could literally make a graph to prove that fact, but idk how lol

osu! is dead in the sense that most communities have more or less diminished overtime.
years ago, like before 2015, osu! would have a lot of active sub-communities compromised of national groups, mapper groups, certain mod-combination player communities (FL), even forum shit posters had their own communities etc. I see less of this compared to back in the day.

osu! over time has strangely become more of a homogenized game in my opinion.
what I mean by this is pp-maps have stomped out most players with unique skills and playstyles from the leaderboard. not saying that all people in the top-100 are, obviously there are many players with incredible skillsets but a majority of them have similar skillsets so there is less incentive to look up to as many different top players as compared to back in the day. On top of that, overall this game community is a lot more westernized/western dominant. Before there were clear western and eastern (asiatic) communities.

I know that numbers wise, osu! is more popular than ever before in it's entire history but osu! and it's community has lost a lot of it's original culture to the point where old players returning after 5 years would find this place unrecognizable.

The fact is - osu! will Never die as a community and as game in general.
In the years the community has changed most and I think it will change more.
Also with the recent rising of the social network like TikTok (yeah) the community have actually seen new players getting curious about the game
Talking about graphs, osu! is not a dead game, as now, maybe in the future it will.

Everything have its beginning, and its end.

Yeah, the game and community itself will probably not die for a long while, but the parts of the community that have been around for years have sadly

Nah cause sub-communities die out due to homogenization over time. We see a lot of this happen passively under our noses. A shame really, but sadly some thing will end as new uniform parts come to fruition. Well atleast the score system will be the same for many more years until lazer comes out that is
