If you find it bloated, unlike Windows, you can remove whatever you don't needKarmine wrote:

Ubuntu is probably the easiest to get into. Fedora is pushing too much for new shit, so it might not be the best solution. Ubuntu, PopOS or Linux Mint are the best newbie solutions IMO. Mint is just fantastic and I'm honestly planning to move from EndeavourOS to Linux Mint 22 once it hits download links.Corne2Plum3 wrote:

If you want something close to Windows get Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Fedora, idk whatever, with KDE plasma desktop environment. It kinda looks like windows but more customizable

Windows is less bloated and most of the bloat can be removed or at least hidden.Corne2Plum3 wrote:

Windows is MORE bloated. No, most of the bloat can't be truly removed because it gets re-installed after each update, to my knowledge. Removing the bloat is also often a case of using hacky methods and utilities. In Linux, it is less hacky, supported and even encouraged in many distros.
Ubuntu does install a lot of shit, yeah. Never heard of ShutUp10, but I have heard that the IoT Enterprise version of Windows 10 comes up with less bullshit like Cortana, the Windows Store, the start menu ads, etc. It's what I use for dual booting and it works very well for my needs, to be honest.Karmine wrote:

Aside from edge/webview (which is used by some apps for UI) and cortana I haven't had stuff reinstall itself in years.
There are tools like ShutUp10 that work well for disabling stuff without breaking everything.
Stuff that cannot be entirely removed can at least be removed from start menu.
Bloat on Windows used to be horrible but nowadays it's not that bad (Win10, haven't tried 11), not as bad as Ubuntu from my experience.
I've also heard you can avoid almost all the bloat during installation when selecting language or something, there's a special option. Never tried it though.Winnyace wrote:

Debian standard ISO is the netinstall, which yes, does install everything a desktop environment comes up, but it can be removed easily.
I don't know about that. I honestly went through the netinst ISO of Debian like two times. I usually just pick the LiveISO images and flashed those when I wanted to try out Debian, not the netinst.Karmine wrote:

They certainly have their hardware at a really high price, but at least for creative people and developers, a Mac is an option. For creative people, as in graphic designers, video editors, special effects people or music producers, Mac is sort of the only option, alongside Windows, of course, but Mac seems to have the edge here. For developers, I personally believe Linux does the job better than Mac, but they are free to use whatever they want. Some people simply want to do their work and not mess with anything besides work.z0z wrote:

The vocal minority (that includes me) of people talking about Linux online is smaller compared to everybody who just uses it and shuts up. Some genuinely prefer Linux for their tasks at work.Patatitta wrote:

I disagree with you saying that using Linux require to be in very specific community and spend too much time on it to even use it. You don't have to be deep in a commuinity to know the advantage of not having ads on your system, not having telemetry and having your sysyem not bloated to a point your PC lag (for a personnal case, I was running LMMS + Firefox + Discord on my laptop with 16 GB of RAM and got lag).Patatitta wrote:

Again, this is a concept of perspective, for us, that we're DEEP onto the internet, we don't see linux as something that niche, but for your classmate in high school that just play football 24/7, it is, and we, as nerds that know computer stuff, are a minority. While the advantages of linux are going to be there regardless of what you do, if you notice closely, I said most people may not CARE about the advantages. Some people are just used to lag and doesn't really do anything to change it, some people doesn't really care about bloat or even use the things you consider bloat, and while "it's getting easier for a newcomer", it's still steps behind windows, even more when you start considering app compability and learning how to use the alternatives to the software you cant use and etcCorne2Plum3 wrote:

Also Linux is getting more and more user friendly these last year, you have distros like Ubuntu and Mint which are new easy to use even for a newcommer. Of course you have to learn some things, like how you learnt to use windows at first, but those distros doesn't require to spend 4 hours on a terminal to make it work. And Windows is getting shit too
I 100% agree with Patatitta. Most people don't care and I don't think trying to convert such people is a good use of time. This ease of use helps the newcomer interested in trying out Linux and long term users. Over time, you just don't care about ricing and using the most based shit ever. You just want something that is fast and works out of the box.Patatitta wrote:

people who use linux tend to be trans, or like tf2, or both. im a researcher, by the way, and this is fact.honestly, no source for any of the claims i'm making here, but I think there may be a little bit of truth to this
if you use linux, you must pretty deep in certain online communities to know about it or even care about the advantages it proveides, even more to actually set it up and use it (these things may seem easy to us but again, think your classmate or coworkers), same for TF2, it's a game that often only people who are more into certain communities really play. A lot of places in the world are extremely hostile torwards transgender people, and often find refuge in, online communities, which again, may be pretty deep into the internet
so then we have a clear overlap between that, if you're trans, and in an online community because of it, you're most likely to have heard about linux before, so the overlap just forms naturally
