the skin I use has "drum-hitvlap2.wav" and "soft-hitclap2.wav", do they get used in some context or it's only a variant for me to use instead of the originals?

It depends of the sampleset used in the map, which if not custom, can be "drum", "soft" or "normal", and often several sampleset are used in the same map.

Nope. It only uses the original.
The 2 at the back of the hitsound name acts as a "unused extra hitsound" for you to change.

If you want to use that hitsound in the game, be sure to name it properly and precisely.

Extra:
If you're talking about beatmap hitsounds, that's a different topic as you can alternate which hitsounds you can use by toggle F6 in your editor map and change at the audio tab.
