Are forums dead on osu! ?

Feels like there are no new discussions or anyone posting anything and a lot of the posts are old (which is to be expected, a lot of those old legacy forums are a good place to post) but there are rarely, if any new discussions being brought up on the regular.

As we progress through time, it is inevitable that the old will be replaced with the new and as a result of that, change comes.

I'm not suggesting that these forum board on osu! is not useful, it is absolute a core part of this video game and absolutely necessary for development, mapping, bulletin discussions etc. you know, but I'm talking more about using the forum from a general use point of view.

the osu! forum in my opinion is very much a gateway to the past. This is a very old model of internet communication and it's amazing that it has lived on into 2020. The icons, seeing when you joined, customization of signatures etc is very reminiscent of old forum websites, but it is as it is, an old model.

I am actually quite keen to know. The younger members of osu!, are you familiar with these sorts of forums and bulletin boards? I would like it for people born after 2005 to comment on here and enlighten us on the prevalence of these styles of forums communities in your days of first using the internet.

I have noticed that people don't reach out as much today as compared to the past, despite living in a more 'connected' and easy to communicate digital society. It's very strange when you think about it, right? I don't know what this phenomenon is called but it's definitely noticeable.

An example is live parties and chats on consoles. back in the day, it was expected that nearly everyone had a mic to communicate in a CoD lobby, but now, people stay in their own private parties or discord calls. Every single person who was an active user of PS3/xbox 360 for CoD/Halo can 100% attest to the realisation of this.

Could it be the same story for these forums?

Why go through the hassle of putting yourself out there in these obsolete modes of communication when you can simply join a discord group that you joined via some reddit thread. Why have a discussion on a topic with the general community when you can stick with your friends in your private group and discuss it there to your hearts content while transferring data at a higher rate since you can easily be notified of a response! which you can't here.

The evolution of the internet is something that fascinates me, I wish I was more articulate so I could tell and express myself better because it always goes in an unexpected direction but anyways, I just wanna get something started.

Do you guys think this style of forum is dying?

What's your thoughts on this. What changed, What's new, What was your first experience like back in 2006, how has it changed 14 years later?

osu! forums are far from dead. Some subforums have less activities than others (mafia subforum is effectively dead at this point), but other places are still fairly active.

Obviously thanks to the popularization of various chat clients and smartphones (plus the new generations being born around them), people prefer realtime chat, forums in comparison look inconvenient. The internet has come a long way since BBSes in the 80s to forums in the mid 90s. Even to this day bulletin boards exist for those who want to experience their childhood or are simply curious and interested in retro things. Forums are far from dead though, maybe not as prevalent as before but they're alive. Just like HDDs and SSDs, they both still co-exist.

In osu!'s case the forums are relatively low-traffic as peppy puts it and thats probably been for a while now. Low-traffic in comparison to 20k ingame users that is. This place is definitely not dead. Theres discussions and multiple active subforums, it may not look much but its there.

I wasn't very active in the forums at the start though so I don't have an impression of what it was in the very early years. Most likely it would feel like more active since the userbase wasn't as large as it is now.

OT and FG are NOT dead !!!

How many times do you wanna have the same discussions about pp and getting better at osu!std and how fast did you improve!??!

These days, forums are for shitposting

maybe ppy should make more like reddit
i agree on that its old tho

Probably

OT is far from dead, because its literally just game subforums and shitposts. Its just that people are posting more and more repetitive things. I haven't seen a new general discussion post in a while...

They're not dead, but rather not as active as before. I barely see something interesting outside OT and FG, most of them are rather repetitive or not enough to the table.

Just imagine when modding v1 was a thing back then, damn memories...

I'm very confuse between these two forums...
"General Discussion" & "Off-Topic".
What makes them a bigger difference? If I were to add more to my curiosity, how about the difference between "Gameplay & Rankings" and "General Discussion"?

I feel like Gameplay & Rankings and General Discussion are very very similar, but the first one is more active than this.

I actually looked back at the first post I ever made on osu! and it was helping this guy on osu! because he just wanted to know how to spin faster on a mouse. His post got 54 replies on mouse grip and technicles to go in circles faster.

It felt like a lot more community participation back then. I get that it gets boring after a while but for some, helping new players never gets boring.

So we can agree that it's not dead but it's dying.
There's less traffic and less interaction all together.

I remember when I started, the forum was all I really had to interact with anybody from the osu! community.
The subreddit was in it's early stages and almost unused and discord was barely a thing. But is reddit really that popular for talking with osu! people about osu! things? feels like a place to just talk about scores.

for people who start this game completely on their own, I wonder how they meet new people? maybe multi. It's something I do wonder about. new players let me know how you made your first osu! friends.

we have a reddit like thing with the comment sections beneath beatmaps but I think the reddit style has issues of it's own. I don't think the upvote/downvote system for comments is a good thing. reddit style and this style has it's different purposes and uses for sure.

I don't want forums to ever go though. I hope peppy can keep these magical things forever if it's possible.
Flanster
Considering a tremendous effort was put making a new version of the forums (and theres still more work on it to be done), I highly doubt it will go away any time soon :P

General discussion should be merged with Off-Topic.
What do you think? Are you agree?

Doesn't seem like a bad idea. It'll increase the traffic to one place instead of splitting it between two
qwt
and that's why we need Voice Chat in osu!

And more of a feed/something like twitter

If the two were merged, I almost feel like there would be a crackdown on shitposting. and that maybe normal GD users wouldn't exactly like the prevalence of shitposting.

I don't necessarily oppose the idea, but i could see it being a bit rocky.
