Here's a new render, with the big shading problems fixed and the nose/hair finished. I know, I know, *insert part of the face here* is too far to the left and totally ruins everything, but that can be fixed later. So could we please say this is head is good enough for the moment and move on with the project? :(

Edit: Lowered the hairline, raised the nose slightly.

While modeling this new face, however, I realized how much MeshSmooth sucks, so I'm going to try smoothing the body mesh out myself. Just a second...

The head looks a bit flat from this specific angle due to the shape of the hair, but it'll look fine in a front perspective. Side view:

That could end up being tricky to fix later, so I fixed it now (sort of). I also fixed a few other issues such as the hole you can see in the side view render.

Hmm, I can't help but feel that the arms and legs should be slightly thinner than it is, and shoulders should be less broad.
The torso somehow looks a bit out-stretched to me as well.
Maybe you can try using the models from "MikuMikuDance" as reference to proportions.

Other than that, Nice job! :D

Did the neck vanish? No, it didn't, but something looks very inhuman about it. The head looks too pointy? Remember, the thickest part of the head is like 25% of the way down from the top. And it's pretty even most of the way down. And if that's the case with the model there, something else has gone awry.

Are you using the envelopes? I never got the hang of those things, so i usually just manually set the weights. It's not as hard as it sounds. lol. I've also never used CAT though. Good luck!

I'll get started on both requests as soon as 3ds stops being gay. I've already skinned one half of the model once, but I couldn't figure out how to mirror everything to the other half (there is a function called Mirror Mode, but it didn't feel like working). After editing the head a bit, I also managed to undo everything I had done with the Skin modifier somehow, so I'll have to start all over again. Requesting a better program to skin this thing in.

Dunno if you know you moved some verts around or what when you changed stuff, but so long as the vertex order doesn't change, saving your weights out to a file (under the advanced section of the skin modifier) can help save some time if things get broken, you can just load them back up.

The Mirror mode used to not work for me, but then one day it just randomly started working. I think there's some stuff or something you have to play with.

Sorry if you knew all that already, I only have experience with 3ds Max, so I can't really say if there are easier programs for skinning.

They just waved their arms from side to side, IIRC. Either way, there's not much of a discussion to derail in here. We should definitely focus on the dancing, and try to develop a unique set of dance moves rather than ripping everything straight out of Ouendan/EBA.

I would settle for punching air in time with the notes. Serious punching. Jumping around the screen 'punching a swarm of flies to death' punching.

That'd be neat. She could be programmed to punch in the direction of the hitcircles as they are hit.

While punching the hitcircles would be neat, that alone would get repetitive after a while, and I'm not sure how feasible it would be to code that. Now, could we please try to come up with some sort of "moveset" instead of focusing on how awesome punching things would be? :\

I'm up for an exaggerated karate dance style. Mostly punching, but in different styles.

I know this is more peppy's area, but as far as moves go, I say give her a basic set of defaults and give people a utility to create their own per song or whatever. Like MikuMikuDance. so far Osu! has been really customizable, and i think it'd be fun to have do a unique set of dance moves for a song.

A utility would take a load off Pippi's Animator, which I'm assuming is Loginer, cause then he'd only have to come up with the defaults. Anyways, I'll shut up now, as i'm sure I've just pissed several people off. lol.

Just 2 dance styles would be enough, 1 for each soundset. In the situation that a map switches soundsets several times, there would be a 'Don't inherit dance style' check box, in case you don't want pippi to switch from 'slow and sad' to 'bouncing up and down like a tween on unprescribed Ritalin' on the spot.

She only has one color, it shouldn't be too hard to make that adjustable. But I'd call that a pretty low priority relative to, you know, putting her in the game and having it work.

It's not hard at all, it's not even on the priority list. It's as simple as editing a few .png files you'll find right next to the .x file, although I should probably write these things down somewhere instead of expecting people to be psychic.

Anyway, after a few nights of picking my ear, drinking soda and lurking on boards instead of working on important things, I'm feeling like getting something done right now, so we'll see how things end up today as soon as brb sleep

The thickness isn't too bad, actually. Looks good for man-hands. A bit too thick in this case yeah, but don't go cutting it in half or anything.

It looks a tad flat from the top though - pay close attention to your hand's natural shape. The thumb, for example, should be below the fingers when holding the hand parallel to the ground.

The view from below looks great though.

This looks pretty slick in-game. There's a tiny bit of tidying up to do once I get back to my PC though. Real tiny.

UPDATE: Still some tiny (even tinier than before) AA issues. Maybe I'll bug Saru for the psd.

what really concerns me is the fact that this Pippi dancer might be a distraction during gameplay..i imagine this would be more of an add on or graphics option rather than something forced upon players who dont want the dancer. :| ( this whole idea is more of a colaboration since many people are working at this together )

Can you try thinking before asking a question? Combobursts are skinnable at this very moment. If you like the original, just keep that from the template skin.

Oh yeah. You can also confirm this in Multiplayer: In EBA, I think, the characters will always dance based on the difficulty, so if you choose a Diva to play as and play Medium, she'll do the male version of the dance. In Ouendan 2, the characters will always do their gender's dance.

So how many tris will the osu engine be supporting? Also will the eyes be posable or just there, becasue I'm having trouble fitting mine.

Edit: his hair isn't even done and it's already around 20,000 tris :o , the head when mirrored is around 1000

I thibk I found a way to greatly decrease the tri count, just need to delete all the unseen faces, so does anyone want to make suggestions as to the name/design of th character I'm modeling? (not Poppy, that sounds like a gandpa)

so I should aim for about 20000 tris? doesn't sound too hard.

It's not the end of the world if it ends up at 25,000 or 30,000 triangles, but you'll want to keep things as low-poly as possible without sacrificing quality.

@Echo: An Irrlicht app displaying nothing but a cel-shaded Pippi with no AA runs at 200 FPS on my laptop. Put two copies of her on the screen (about 25,000 triangles), and the frame rate drops to 100 FPS. Keep in mind that there are people with much worse GPUs playing osu!, and we'll want to make sure they can keep dancers enabled without the frame rate dropping.

There might also be scenarios where two or more dancers are on the screen at the same time; what if someone wants to make something resembling the end of Ouendan 2? And like I said previously, there are more reasons to keep things low-poly than just performance.

first of all, I was planning on changing Poppy's name to Pippin. Like the Hobbit. and the other dude u guys are making looks like 15 yr. old Pippi that whent emo. so idk, my design was a homage to Ryuuta. :x

I don't think we need a "male mascot" per se. I wouldn't mind having alternate 3D characters to use in-game, but I don't think they need to follow Pippi's color themes or design style so closely. I'd rather have Ryuuta or Agent J, or if you insist on making an original character, some kind of combination of Ryuuta and J.

Tall blond with blue eyes, bit of a nerd in denial. Hates Digimon songs without even listening to them just because they're Digimon, thinks Pokemon is for kids, and wonders why Pippi wastes so much time cheering on people in a game where you click circles. He then decides to try it to impress her for his own selfish, perverted reasons. Armed with his pink t-shirt, blue jeans, Tigers cap, and a stylus, he dives in... and gets fascinated. Oh, and he has a backpack full of books because he was going to study.
