Well, I've got a new hardest game. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. First five stages are throwaway easy, but each level is tougher than the last and by Stage 6 or 7 they're squeezing you by the balls. I'm at Stage 10 with no end in sight, and I can't imagine it getting much more difficult without it boiling down to a pile of luck or a requirement that I use a Tool Assistant in order to actually place objects where I want them to go (which afaik is impossible on a PS3)
Great game, too bad the gameplay has some flaws and is very easy if you know how to make chains. I recommend Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary, the best one in the series.

and outrageously difficult if you don't. Hence why I'll never enjoy the Puyo series.

Touhou 6...took me forever to 1cc even on Normal.
Hika
I'm gonna honestly have to say Shining Force EXA.

OH LOL, NINJA GAIDEN 2. I've destroyed about 2 xbox controllers while playing due to endless rage.

I'm gonna say Spyro: Ripto's Rage.
For anyone who's played this, you know why.
Trouble with the trolly, eh?

Not really. To be honest, the first game as a whole was harder than that.

I played that game years ago but I dont recall it being hard. Maybe trying to 100% the game was tough.

You shouldn't say that, it's horribly easy with a STABLE framerate...
SPOILER
Stage 1 avg fps : 12-15
Stage 2 avg fps : 51-53
Stage 3 avg fps : 28-29
Stage 4 avg fps : 18-23
Stage 5 avg fps : fuckthisshitidontpassitbecauseofthisfuckingframerate

The hardest video game I've ever encountered ? Maybe George Foreman's KO, something like that on NES. I never understood WTF was that. Keep failing, Gezo~

hmm hardest game............ cant think of any really. Anti Idle: The Game only because it takes over a year to just complete it. Its not difficult but its VERY time consuming.
mathexpert
Beating ballos from the sacred grounds (hell) from cave story was really hard. (it probably took me at least a month of suffering playing to beat it :P)

Trust me, being eight or so, it was torture.

Well unofficial Game i would say Touhou Imperishable Night and Official i would say Monster Hunter Freedom Unite ;D
Thimeeh
Hmm. Playing Resident Evil 5 alone at the hardest difficulty(haven't tried others. Might apply on easier diffs also) needs a mention. Trying to keep Sheva from dying or mess things up generally is a difficult chore indeed. Babysitting Ashley in RE4 was much easier.

Honestly, after I beat hell for the first time, I was able to go through it without much trouble on my next playthrough with the snake. Trust me, you do it again now, it will be a whole lot easier for you.

Now doing it with 3 HP, that's another story.

that took me ages to do, but I had a harder time getting TO Ballos with 3HP than I did beating him.

I Wanna Be The Guy, no contest. Hardest game without cheap deaths would probably be Super Meat Boy.
I wanna be the guy is a fucking ass hard game, IF your not used to it like me :P but shit, I Wanna be the guy are the most good games out there man, espicailly all of them are made with game maker (i know, I made one.) , I'm gonna go play them again :D

I think people do a bad job at judging what "hard" means.
Games that people say are "hard" like Contra, Ghosts 'n Goblins, IWBTG, etc. are initially "hard" because you die a lot in them in the beginning.
But if you don't give up because it's too "hard" and you keep trying you can beat the games in around a week. Sure self-challenges like 1cc some Touhous on Lunatic could also be "hard" and take like 3 weeks - a month to accomplish. The thing is: if you dedicate yourself to a game you can beat it rather quickly after a bit of practice.

But when you look at learning curves I'd say Beatmania IIDX is a game you could call "hard."
It doesn't matter how dedicated you are, you can play every day for an entire year and still not be able to pass some 7s. The learning curve is that insane. A year. An entire year of the same game and it can still be too hard for you. I don't think it really has much of a contest. You guys are smalltime.

Going by that I could say Stepmania is the hardest game ever.

I played for 2 years everyday and still fail 14+ songs.

It comes down to the person and their affinity for the game.

Yes, I suck. Guess I'll clarify that I'm not agreeing with the above.
WhoAteFred
Rhythm games are generally hard, if only by the fact that they require skills only gained from said game, unlike games that can be beat by blatant save scumming.

The obvious one would be IWBTG, getting past/to the first boss is an achivement for me and most other people, but hte game can be worked though, and I agree with the people who are saying games like IWBTG and Super Meat Boy aren't really hard, they're just tiresome.

For a hard game, Metroid Prime Hunters for the Nintendo DS is the most frustrating game I've played - easy enough shooting things when cover's around, but when it isn't, and the control system doesn't like left handers (like me </3), it makes the game almost impossible - never got past the first room - let alone the first boss.
gabzoz456
for me it was bunny most die its realy hard

Platformer: I wanna be the guy, Super Meat Boy, and of course Battletoads 8D
Sh'mup: Any game made by Cave Co, but especially DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu & Mushihimesama Futari. Oh, and Touhou.
Rhythm: beatmaniaIIDX, hands down. jubeat is also pretty tough 8D. Oh, and o2mania.
Hiryuu_old
Super Meat Boy and I Wanna Be The Guy. Very hard games.

Like Zekeira, I found IIDX really hard. Another diff was too wtf to me. With an addition, playing on a keyboard (Lunatic Rave 2) is much harder

I recently downloaded MegaMari, which is a megaman game with a touhou twist to it. That's basically taking two of the most mentioned games in this topic (barring IWBTG because that wasn't hard moreso stupid) and forging them together into solidified death.

I'm not even kidding. Every enemy gets attack patterns as complicated as you'd expect from a touhou-based platformer, the incredible lack of extra lives at the start is almost never enough to get to the boss with even the slightest modicum of chance.

Did I mention all boss patterns are based off of actual touhou spellcards?

Though I have to admit, Marisa has a very small hitbox, and with some luck you'll get the patterns you can dodge the best (every amount of health you deplete does fresh out the boss' array of bullet pattterns though) so it's not incredibly impossible. But still it has to be one of the hardest games I have ever laid eyes on.

Also, some special levels out of the Vip Mario series can qualify, but I only know them through raocow playthroughs, so I'm not the best judge for their exact difficulty.

I was playing Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter and just remembered how unforgiving this game is.

Didn't help I was playing multiplayer with some friends... which never makes things easier.

Started playing God Hand yesterday. I'm currently at stage 2 (Normal), and I haven't cleared a single area so far without dying at least once. It's not the hardest game I've ever played, but it's definitely another one of those difficult-yet-fair games a la Super Meat Boy.
awp
I've been very tempted to fire up God Hand again, since I never got far. I do remember it kicking my ass though.

Yes a lot actually. But the fact that the characters get tired so fast made it hard for me to level up. And being the fact that I'm too lazy to grind I never got many levels up. So it was tough .~. And the answer was crazy DX

Ignoring all the NES games I can think of, probably Super Meat Boy. It turned out to be one of my favorite Steam games though so I eventually got the Golden God achi. Honorable mention to IWBTG. It's harder than SMB, but in a very unfair manner, so it's more trial-and-error rather than being good at the game. At least the beginning, never bothered to go beyond it.
Tetsu_old
Ninja Gaiden: Black & Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.
awp
IWBTG's difficulty is largely fake though; ie once you learn all the Gotchas you can zip through it. I found Mega Man 9 to be the same way, which was why I was glad Mega Man 10's difficulty was a bit more legitimate.

It was quite a fun game.
monochromesandwich
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne on Hard mode. INSANE BOSSES.
Rii_old_1
for the CDi: Legend of Zelda: Faces of Evil
Blackiris
Mushihime-sama Futari on ULTRA difficulty. It just makes Touhou's lunatic seem to be a piece of cake.
And IWBTG along with its Touhou crossover ("I Wanna Be The Shrine Maiden") are both quite difficult too...
I'd also mention Kagetsu Tohya - clearing it without using a walkthrough is not really a far cry from a slow-paced walk around the Ninth Circle of Hell.

I liked mixing shit randomly and hoping to god they made something boss.

lol yea, i used to remember good fusions tho (well, the sand witch thing 2100 with thousands of equipments and the dragon 2800 were the most common)

but after the mages you had to beat the laberinth guy, the 2 crocodile dudes, and like 4 guys more without saving in a row .. it was impossible.
Backfire
My friend and me spent hours upon hours trying to beat it. Getting stars was nigh impossible cause you get like 1 a fight, and if you wanna transfer cards in, you had to spend like 5 billion.
Salvage
i beated it with gameshark, otherwise it's impossible imo

For me it's currently The adventure of Link. My mom knows where everything are on that game and she's really amazing at it.. But I'm pretty much worthless on it... She even had to help to the last boss which I took myself XD
Armaggedon25
Gonna add beatmaniaIIDX (Which I know was brought up in an earlier post) to my list, because the learning curve is the steepest I've ever seen for a rhythm game. The jump in difficulty between normal and hyper is ridiculous :(

I suppose in general bemani games are fairly challenging, but I find Jubeat very fun (and pretty easy). Never tried DrumMania or any of those though.

Dark Souls, there's no doubt about it.

A lot of NES games were like this. You had to basically bomb random walls in the original Zelda if you wanted to find anything.

Although I agree, there are T]two things that seperate LoZ from Metroid:

1. Most random bombing was optional. Neither the potion nor container was NEEDED to win, just made it easier.
2. Necessary bombing was most of the time deducted from logic by using the map and seeing there is no passage way into the room nearby on all sides. Plus, it tended to be in the center of the wall.

Metroid was like telling me to find a needle in a haystack over one hundred different times. Thanksfully bombing random places didnt take some form of money like in LoZ.
