I think people do a bad job at judging what "hard" means.
Games that people say are "hard" like Contra, Ghosts 'n Goblins, IWBTG, etc. are initially "hard" because you die a lot in them in the beginning.
But if you don't give up because it's too "hard" and you keep trying you can beat the games in around a week. Sure self-challenges like 1cc some Touhous on Lunatic could also be "hard" and take like 3 weeks - a month to accomplish. The thing is: if you dedicate yourself to a game you can beat it rather quickly after a bit of practice.
But when you look at learning curves I'd say Beatmania IIDX is a game you could call "hard."
It doesn't matter how dedicated you are, you can play every day for an entire year and still not be able to pass some 7s. The learning curve is that insane. A year. An entire year of the same game and it can still be too hard for you. I don't think it really has much of a contest. You guys are smalltime.
