In my 14 years of gaming, there is only one game that I can say is the hardest one I played. The first Ninja Gaiden on Xbox. I mean, the difficulty is just insane, I couldn't get past Chapter 10(I think it's Military Supply Base) even on Normal. But it's amazing regardless.

That game is the only one that I will ever consider the absolute masterpiece of gaming industry, mostly because there are so many restrictions. Hell, even the producer/director of Team Ninja(sorry, can't remember his name now) said in an interview, that he is drunk when making games.

Later, they went AWOL with Ninja Gaiden 2 and made it easy as hell(I don't know if he was on that project).

This is all my opinion, of course.
It's not only your opinion... in all my really long gaming experience as well, Ninja Gaiden (Black) on original XBOX has definitively won the award of the hardest game of all time I ever played.

It's not even funny how the first boss is hard... in normal mode. Then you get hard mode, very hard mode, and master ninja mode... wtf how can someone even go over very hard mode ?!?! I was s***ing bricks the whole time in hard mode and ugh... I don't think I completed that mode yet (and I bought that game in 2006).

and yes, Ninja Gaiden 2 on XBOX360 was a joke compared to that cruel, cruel game.

I bought the boxed game when I was 10?
but from what I remember, I never even got the helicopter to lift off. :D

It came with this instruction book
telling you most keyboard shortcuts (you use pretty much all keys, with combinations of ctrl, alt)

would be funny if anyone can relate lol.
Armaggedon25
In terms of game difficulty, Sands of Destruction on the DS I found pretty difficult, and any game I had on the Sega Dreamcast, so Bangaioh and Fighter Zero. I found them difficult, gameplay wise and because I couldn't understand much Japanese.

They are.

SMT is also not for people who dislike grinding and actually having a plan of attack.

Mitsuru begs to differ. But then again, I didn't ever take out Metis, since she was the most boss thing in The Answer. Several of my IRL friends couldn't stand her (so I got new friends).
Cyclohexane
Wipeout 64.

Now I know what you're thinking, but really, it's hard. Try steering with an n64 controller. Not only is it painful for your thumb but also extremely frustrating.

(That is if you don't cheat right away and choose Piranha II)

DoDonPachi and its sequels, Mushihime-sama Futari, Ibara. Arcade shooters win by default since they're designed to kill you quickly and take your money.

I wanna be the guy is worthy of mention but, it's mostly built around pattern memorization and not actual difficulty. Plus it has a save feature, so it might take you forever but you'll beat it eventually. Not what I'd consider hard.

Dwarf Fortress. Never had in my entire life attempted to defend a fortress of over 400 dwarves until now.

I'm absolutely terrible at Touhou and Megaman games.

With Touhou, there are so many bullets on the screen that I lose focus and die. With Megaman, I can never make it past bosses. By the time I'm actually able to dodge their attacks, I'm either dead or about to die.
Thimeeh
Ninja Gaidens for Xbox/Xbox 360 are all around challenging even on the easiest difficulty. I don't think I passed any of the bosses on first try. I actually beat Ninja Gaiden 2 on mentor difficulty(took some time...) only to unlock master ninja and realize I can't beat the first level.

And a case I recently stumbled upon: Tomba/Tombi on PSX. At first it's easy going, but then there's this cave with no floor and enemies flying all around. Drained all of my lives I had collected :(

I had a demo of Tombi on my PSX when I was a kid, It was my favourite game on the platform at the time xD

Unofficial would be QWOP. Otherwise its Superman 64 on the n64. That is literally one of the worst rated games in history.

I had that on demo too. When I recently got the PSX emulator to play FFIX again, I remembered Tombi and few others from those demos of my childhood so I got them too. The demo gives really wrong image about the brutality of that game. It really hurt my HC-gamer pride to admit that I can't beat that game :(

You should. It's one of the best games on the system. Partly because it offers some challenge unlike most of the games nowadays.

Another crazy PSX game: Bust-A-Groove. As a kid I had this on a demo as well, although I never managed to beat it. Thinking I was a kid then and could handle it as an adult. It can't be that hard as I remember it, I just didn't understand the mechanics.
Can't beat the first stage. xD

Well, I've got a new hardest game. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. First five stages are throwaway easy, but each level is tougher than the last and by Stage 6 or 7 they're squeezing you by the balls. I'm at Stage 10 with no end in sight, and I can't imagine it getting much more difficult without it boiling down to a pile of luck or a requirement that I use a Tool Assistant in order to actually place objects where I want them to go (which afaik is impossible on a PS3)

Just wait until you get to Robotnik. (i'm assuming you havent changed your settings and are playing on Normal.) He's relentless and a genius, just as he's known for. He throws chains and combos you couldn't come up with in seconds time like he can.

Surprisingly, I had very little difficulty after Stage 10, and Robotnik only took me about 10 minutes

I'm gonna be obscure and throw out playing Resident Evil 5 on the classic controls easter egg. Now that is an interesting challenge.

Great game, too bad the gameplay has some flaws and is very easy if you know how to make chains. I recommend Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary, the best one in the series.

The hardest video game I've ever encountered ? Maybe George Foreman's KO, something like that on NES. I never understood WTF was that. Keep failing, Gezo~

hmm hardest game............ cant think of any really. Anti Idle: The Game only because it takes over a year to just complete it. Its not difficult but its VERY time consuming.

Beating ballos from the sacred grounds (hell) from cave story was really hard. (it probably took me at least a month of suffering playing to beat it :P)

Hmm. Playing Resident Evil 5 alone at the hardest difficulty(haven't tried others. Might apply on easier diffs also) needs a mention. Trying to keep Sheva from dying or mess things up generally is a difficult chore indeed. Babysitting Ashley in RE4 was much easier.

Honestly, after I beat hell for the first time, I was able to go through it without much trouble on my next playthrough with the snake. Trust me, you do it again now, it will be a whole lot easier for you.

Now doing it with 3 HP, that's another story.

that took me ages to do, but I had a harder time getting TO Ballos with 3HP than I did beating him.

I think people do a bad job at judging what "hard" means.
Games that people say are "hard" like Contra, Ghosts 'n Goblins, IWBTG, etc. are initially "hard" because you die a lot in them in the beginning.
But if you don't give up because it's too "hard" and you keep trying you can beat the games in around a week. Sure self-challenges like 1cc some Touhous on Lunatic could also be "hard" and take like 3 weeks - a month to accomplish. The thing is: if you dedicate yourself to a game you can beat it rather quickly after a bit of practice.

But when you look at learning curves I'd say Beatmania IIDX is a game you could call "hard."
It doesn't matter how dedicated you are, you can play every day for an entire year and still not be able to pass some 7s. The learning curve is that insane. A year. An entire year of the same game and it can still be too hard for you. I don't think it really has much of a contest. You guys are smalltime.

Going by that I could say Stepmania is the hardest game ever.

I played for 2 years everyday and still fail 14+ songs.

It comes down to the person and their affinity for the game.

Yes, I suck. Guess I'll clarify that I'm not agreeing with the above.
WhoAteFred
Rhythm games are generally hard, if only by the fact that they require skills only gained from said game, unlike games that can be beat by blatant save scumming.

The obvious one would be IWBTG, getting past/to the first boss is an achivement for me and most other people, but hte game can be worked though, and I agree with the people who are saying games like IWBTG and Super Meat Boy aren't really hard, they're just tiresome.

For a hard game, Metroid Prime Hunters for the Nintendo DS is the most frustrating game I've played - easy enough shooting things when cover's around, but when it isn't, and the control system doesn't like left handers (like me </3), it makes the game almost impossible - never got past the first room - let alone the first boss.

I recently downloaded MegaMari, which is a megaman game with a touhou twist to it. That's basically taking two of the most mentioned games in this topic (barring IWBTG because that wasn't hard moreso stupid) and forging them together into solidified death.

I'm not even kidding. Every enemy gets attack patterns as complicated as you'd expect from a touhou-based platformer, the incredible lack of extra lives at the start is almost never enough to get to the boss with even the slightest modicum of chance.

Did I mention all boss patterns are based off of actual touhou spellcards?

Though I have to admit, Marisa has a very small hitbox, and with some luck you'll get the patterns you can dodge the best (every amount of health you deplete does fresh out the boss' array of bullet pattterns though) so it's not incredibly impossible. But still it has to be one of the hardest games I have ever laid eyes on.

Also, some special levels out of the Vip Mario series can qualify, but I only know them through raocow playthroughs, so I'm not the best judge for their exact difficulty.

Started playing God Hand yesterday. I'm currently at stage 2 (Normal), and I haven't cleared a single area so far without dying at least once. It's not the hardest game I've ever played, but it's definitely another one of those difficult-yet-fair games a la Super Meat Boy.

Ignoring all the NES games I can think of, probably Super Meat Boy. It turned out to be one of my favorite Steam games though so I eventually got the Golden God achi. Honorable mention to IWBTG. It's harder than SMB, but in a very unfair manner, so it's more trial-and-error rather than being good at the game. At least the beginning, never bothered to go beyond it.

IWBTG's difficulty is largely fake though; ie once you learn all the Gotchas you can zip through it. I found Mega Man 9 to be the same way, which was why I was glad Mega Man 10's difficulty was a bit more legitimate.

And IWBTG along with its Touhou crossover ("I Wanna Be The Shrine Maiden") are both quite difficult too...
I'd also mention Kagetsu Tohya - clearing it without using a walkthrough is not really a far cry from a slow-paced walk around the Ninth Circle of Hell.
