A new generic difficulty name?

Well, we have to face it.

We got the Classic terms (Easy, Normal, Hard, Insane), but nowadays, we tend to have maps with difficulties that are... hmmm... Insane+++, but not impossible things.
For some situations, we got things that are from the source, like Lunatic/Extra for touhou, or Another for IIDX and some rhythm games, etc...

What about thinking about a generic difficulty name for this kind of diff ? Like for things that don't have a particular game or w/e related, to have something different.
What do you think about it? If you have any good Idea, post it, I will update the Thread with ideas.

For exemple, I was thinking about Extreme.

List of Difficulty names
  1. Extreme (Sushi)
  2. Expert (lolcubes / AIMod :U)
  3. Unplayable (Wishy22)
  4. Extra (ragelewa)
  5. Crazy (Ijah)
  6. Intense (Ijah)
  7. BROKEN WRIST (Ijah)
  8. Ultimate (NeoRainier)
  9. Pro (NeoRainier)
  10. Special (senaya)
  11. Death (f e a r)
[*]Dire (kriers)
[*]Complex (kriers)

Doesn't AIMod already suggest "Expert" or something?
Wishy
Name it "how to play this" or "unplayable".
thelewa
Just call them Extra, it's stupid to do it only for touhou music.

and it's Extra Stage for touhou music anyway
Wishy
Name it ragefuckinglewa or Julian Kick.
thelewa
"This will make you rage so hard that you will cry tears of blood" sounds good too
Wishy
Call it Cookiezi.

I'd go with Extreme myself so as not to ruin DDR-based "Basic-Difficult-Expert" spreads.

Louis Cyphre's diff names are boss.

Also, "Crazy, Intense, BROKEN WRIST, etc) xD
NeoRainier
How 'bout [Ultimate]? Also [Pro] shouldn't be bad imo....
senaya
each time i read [Extreme] i imagine some guy in his mid 20s shouting that all over the neighborhood.
i'm thinking of something like [Special] or around those lines. it has more, uh.. cuteness in it XD
Derekku
I prefer "Expert".

Extra. It's one of the few difficulties that has historically only ever been used to identify Super Insanes/Insane+++/whatever in ranked and approved maps.

Expert, Another, and Extreme have all been used a number of times to name difficulties that are merely "Insane".

For example, "Expert" is used in In the Groove. It's been used as a difficulty name that merely means "Insane" multiple times. Example: http://osu.ppy.sh/s/7983. This is possibly true of other songs from game sources as well such as Rock Band/GH.

"Extreme" is used in Jubeat. We've got a number of existing "Extreme" difficulties that are just filling in for typical insane level: http://osu.ppy.sh/s/32523 http://osu.ppy.sh/s/17812

Same with "Another" and IIDX.

"Extra" has, as far as I know, only been used in osu! maps on difficulties that are considered to be "beyond insane" and are often even featured alongside Insane difficulties. Examples: http://osu.ppy.sh/s/25922, http://osu.ppy.sh/s/4404, http://osu.ppy.sh/s/8593, http://osu.ppy.sh/s/31343, http://osu.ppy.sh/b/26726 etc etc

Granted, most of those are Touhou, but the reason it works is because "Extra" is featured as a difficulty alongside E/N/H/I levels, hence it makes sense in regard to osu! as a 5th difficulty name, unlike Normal/Hyper/Another or Basic/Advanced/Extreme, which doesn't really translate well into the idea of osu! having 5 difficulty levels. Ironically, Extra is easier than Lunatic and usually even Hard in touhou games.

The thing is the name of the diff has to go with the logic.

I first read the classic difficulties as "Oh, this beatmap is Easy|Normal|Hard|Insane !"

Something generic should suit that kind of logic, imo. That's why I'm not confortable with things like Expert, Extra or Another when taking something that has no real reference :/

Extra was as well generally a reference to touhou Extra stage, isn't it ? It's like naming an insane Lunatic with no real reason.

Btw I didn't even know Extreme was used in JuBeat xD

As there aren't many games that have "Insane" as difficulty name, I think we should get something original as well for osu for things which are Beyond Insane
thelewa
Excluding "Extra" because of "Extra Stage" is just stupid. It's a great difficulty name for that extra difficulty alongside "Insane".

edit: post makes more sense now

and lybydose already said why it fits so well too. When used in maps with already an Insane it is basically an extra Insane difficulty that is there for the better players.

louis cyphre maps use [champion]

also ragelewa i really don't get your avatar/signature lol
thelewa
Champion is just an Insane, not really harder than insane. Mad Machine is so insane because it is already 270bpm and mapping insane to that song would result in the same streams because the streams happen to fit

Madness.

I don't care, as long as the version which is intended to be the most difficult is on the bottom so it's easy to know which one it is.

I would go for [Expert] as well, but since we can rename to whatever we wanted, I would name it something suitable to the song itself though.

For some reason, I see the letter "X" as a shuriken. :P

I believe it was made available before, and now it isn't anymore.

Sorry, my only point was that the graphic exists. It's not currently implemented, and I don't believe it has ever been. It's just there for the sake of future expansion.

And yeah it looks like a ninja star. I think it's pretty cool that way

Louis Cyphre's diff names are boss.
Beginner, Middling, Advanced, Experienced, Champion, [color=?????]God[/color]. I have never mapped something that i could name it as God. Champion yes, it's some sort of Extreme.

Also more suggestions:
Light, Normal, Heavy, Severe, Massive, Ultimate
Novice, Moderate, Professional, Expert, Master.

Well, i don't think that someone will change difficulty icons, so i support using 'Extreme' as highest difficulty in the mapset with 4.97 ~ 5.00 star. But you know guys very well, that star rating system works not perfect, so such maps like http://osu.ppy.sh/s/32661 , http://osu.ppy.sh/s/29691 , http://osu.ppy.sh/s/28158 would still have "I" icon, which is really incorrect. So it's better to make better star system and then start to make new generic difficulty names.

I got more:

[Badass]
[Epic]
[Cruel]
[Savant]
[Wizard]
[Legendary]
Sakura
About [Expert] idk, when peppy talked about it the first time i always said that the "Expert" name didnt give me the impression of being harder than Insane, i'd prefer something like Xtreme or something, but if not then Expert should be below Insane tier (and be what Insane is now), and Insane would be the really, super hard/impossible difficulty of a map.

Other than that, yeah.
Sup A Noob
Why don't we just use [Madness] and be done with it?

I like Extreme as it's been used a lot
I hate Extra because every map I've played with that name was right down horrible
Expert is nice because it fits with osu!stream
I was thinking of Mental, actually. May seem a bit far-fetched but I kinda like it.

And another to the list... to me, Expert is the difficulty below Master in F-Zero games... i.e., it's Hard. Extra might sound dorky to some but if we're shooting for consistency it's probably the best choice.

I use 'Ridiculous'.

On top of that, I think "Insane" is a stupid name for a diff, makes you think that it's an impossible map for some kinda fucking insane morons
It's true. We did kind of paint ourselves into a corner with that one. Pretty much every name people use to mean "above Insane" is really just a synonym...
