I'm quite intrigued about how people react to beatmaps of songs they are not familiar with before playing. Let's assume the maps we are talking about in context of this question are of very high quality, and the only variable is how familiar the song is to you as a player.

Firsted, and then...

You know it's Music + Hitnotes.
Nakata Yuji
To be honest, I personally won't play songs that turn me off upon preview. Except Spinsmith.
Doomsday
I honestly dont mind the song, wether its one of my favourite songs or one of my most hated songs. As long as the map is good, Its all good
Shohei Ohtani
I generally play all ranked songs unless it's anything by The Lonely Island vulgar or such.

I'ts all about playing, but everyone have their own preferences about maps and all.
DeathxShinigami
Gotta like them all, gotta beat them all. So I chose 3rd option <3
Randy96
I voted one, but I think it should be know or like. Because there are lots of songs I don't know, but I play them because they sound good.
Xgor
I voted option 2 but when i was new i only downloaded songs/game series i knew but you can find great song that i never heard of :)

I have downloaded songs that i didn't care about for a while when I grinded CTB......
RandomJibberish
I'll download a map if I like (Or in many cases just know) the song, and I'll keep playing it if it's a good map. So it depends on both, although it does ultimately go down to the song.
Andrea
3rd option.

I'll like to play every map and it's better because I can extend my music taste <3
Gabi
i only play maps i like. when it comes to music, i love almost all kind of music. when i first started playing osu! i wasn't really familiar to japanese music, but now i think it's nice. the more you listen to it, the more you learn to like it.

however shit like this i will never like nor play http://osu.ppy.sh/s/5823 (The real BGM is awesome though ^^)
ShaggoN
I'm somewhere between second and third option. I chose third one, cause there are some beatmaps that i play until i get required score (then i don't care about the song).
Skyripper
I play to hear new music and have fun (doesn't matter if the beatmap sucks).
Randy96
Hah, I kind of regret choosing one. I see two applies to me now.

So you could say I'm a two I guess.
Derekku
3rd option because I like just about any kind of music. There are VERY few songs that I have disliked while playing osu!. However, I am always more excited about playing new maps that are songs I am familiar with (as I'm sure everyone is).
CaptainFlameGuy
I only download beatmaps of songs that sound cool in the preview thing, or if I know them already.

guess it explains my playcount to a degree.

I'd say option 2 as far as modding goes. Strongly prefer to mod genres/bands I'm familiar with and enjoy, but occasionally go otherwise.

Of course, songs I know I download right away. I lean towards 3 in that I download songs I don't like, sometimes hate, just because I'm bored and feel like seeing my rank increasing.

I downloaded songs as pack.
So I enjoy every genre(?) of songs :3

somewhere between 3 and 2, I chose 3
I play any map, even if it's unbearable, and sometimes I like these new songs I hear.
oh, this v

If I find a map with a song style I'm not used to, half the time I'll end up enjoying the song because of the beatmap that accompanies it. i.e. Half of La Roux

Unless I'm missing out on something, I don't see that option. :(

As for me, I play any map of a song that's not terrible, and I'm pretty lenient for "terrible", although anything that's by NicoNicoDouga seems to fall into that category. =/

#2 for me.

If I hear about a map, I play it unless the song is not suited to my tastes.
bmin11
#2 but if the map is epic, ya I can play maps with bad song I guess
KRZY
Well I thought I was a three until I remembered that there were two songs I just couldn't bear listening to and got rid of, so I guess I identify as a two

At first I only played songs I liked
But as a modder I tend to have to mod other songs that I don't usually listen too.
So now I play regularly, some of those songs I've modded :)

"WTH is this song?" first time hearing it
"sounds great!" <- this is why i love osu!
"sounds/the BG is... eew" <- instant delete

I generally don't mind playing unfamiliar songs if the music is bearable.

If the song sucks it doesn't affect my opinion of the map. I only download beatmaps from very good mappers and songs I like :P

Oh and mogs doublepost :<

noticed, mostly because I can't delete it. For some reason.

Shoulda stayed BAT.

Option 3, I play EVERYTHING, and I don't care so much about the music, as long as the map is good.

Though osu! in general could use more variation in its song selection, but that's a common opinion, and it doesn't affect the map quality
An64fan
My decisions are very much tuned in with my own music habits. Although I'm more likely to pick out something I already know or expect good from, I'll willingly take anything that comes across as good to me. Obviously, I won't play a map that's bad, but since this is the case of good quality maps, yes, enjoying the music is a factor (along with the second, being mapping style).

I don't mind playing new sony if they not so horrible... I usually get familiar with them if I like it.

Third one ^^
Songs can't be criticized before checking it~
qlum
until I put a ranked score on every ranked song I will play all songs no matter how bad.
nomedeusuarionaodisp
Second option. Being able to get a preview of the song before downloading it was the best thing to happen to osu!, in my opinion. When I'm in the mood to play, I usually check all recent maps to see if any of them sounds interesting... and well, I don't touch those I dislike.

I've found some pretty awesome songs thanks to osu!.
Mismagius
Well, I was about to choose the third option, but i think *babilfrenzobbilfrenzobabilfrenzo* and I choose the second option.
sohuhard
choose a song..
listen for a while..
sounds good!!
let's play!!
