im genuinely curious almost everywhere i look such as forums or beatmaps i see anime drawings and anime drawings and anime drawings and anime drawings and anime songs
ik rhythm games are popular in east asia but why are the overwhelming majority of osu players weebs?

I guess because peppy decided to put Pippy(idk the correct spelling of the name) on the seasonal backgrouns, and people got attracted by that and made anime maps??? Maybe???? idk
anaxii
Maybe because 80% of content on osu are anime related
ClevelandsMyBro
not forums wise but this is the closest answer to the mapping side of things

StudioGuma
Why does it matter

I don't think they are all weebs, they just see 95% of the community has a anime profile pic so they do the same

It's more likely that the 95% are actually weebs themselves.

To answer OP's question, the game itself was based off a Nintendo DS game, so osu! started off with players who were already interested in Japanese games and culture. It's easy to see how this could have immediately evolved into an anime fanbase from that point.
Leothegamer604
game make by and for weebs, i'm happy here.

Yeah and it seems like a lot of devs are into anime too so it all comes together
UPR
Cause why not? lol

Wouldn't surprise me if weebs are better capable of enjoying something as repetitive as a rhythm game (on average).

Normies very rarely enjoy osu! and are less likely to engage with the community.

The fact that the game was somewhat weeb focused even early on likely has an impact too... Which may be somewhat of a coincidence, but causes a similar audience to be attracted to the game.

There are honestly tons of reasons you could list that would explain this.
DM FOR MUTUAL
Lots of anime songs and anime girls everywhere attracts weebs, and the weebs perpetuate more anime songs and anime girls

Exactly that, anyone is capable of obsession. Obsession is basically what fuels game like ARPGs (by design), League of Legends, Soccer, etc...

And to be fair, osu is a great game, but it pretty much started as a weeb game and the echo chamber only grew with time. I wish it were more diverse, but it is what it is. Downloaded the latest 50 packs and could stand only like... 2 songs, so yeah.

Nowadays I'm surprised when someone ISN'T a weeb. Plus most of the popular songs are anime/JP songs, so it just makes sense

If you play osu!, have an anime pfp and watch anime, you're a weeb. No way around it.

I don't particularly agree with that, a weeb generally means someone who is (unhealthily) obsessed with japanese culture. It was originally used as an insult to people who behaved unusually due to their obsession with japanese stuff (often anime).

From my understanding otaku is a more broad thing and refers to people who are especially interested in certain topics, commonly anime. But you can technically be an otaku for various topics... However nowadays it's often safe to assume if it's used in a western setting that it's someone who is particularly interested in anime.

If you were to be literal, then a weeb should be like... noticeably into anime/japanese stuff based on their behavior. If you're not particularly obsessed with anime or similar stuff, I wouldn't really classify you as a weeb by the technical definition. I wouldn't question using it in a less serious/joking fashion, though.

So does only watching anime counts as being a weeb?
I only talk about anime with a few friends irl and it's not a topic that we discuss a lot
+ I'm not really obsessed with japanese culture at all

I wouldn't say a weeb, maybe otaku... not sure.

As roufou said,
Weeb= obsessed with Japanese culture
Otaku= fan of anime, manga, gaming
Either way I feel as if people will use the term "weeb" even if you watched one anime.
That's just my opinion I may be wrong idk lol

Probably because most beatmaps here are anime-related. So there's a greater chance that weebs will take interest in Osu!. Or they came from other rhythm games (gacha games with idol characters) (?)
