Mahou Shoujo Madokaโ˜…Magica Movie 3: Hangyaku no Monogatari 8/10

Again the "confusing, depressing, but beautiful movie sequel" attacking again, I'd have been incredibly angry if this was the actual end of Madoka lmao. The story was made even more confusing, something I think it was not really needed, as it feels like everything was being done on the fly just to give more lore to Madoka. I... think the series was enough. Anyway I will see what they're up to for the last movie, which I hope is the last.

A short 28-minute film that genuinely left me impressed, particularly the direction, storytelling and artstyle. My only problem with it, is how vague is the overall story. It's one of those where many of the things are left to your interpretation, which isn't bad by itself, but being this a half-hour story, some themes feel half-baked. Still a worthwhile short.

Stan Lee's anime.
Looks good even if made by DEEN.
Story had a nice mystery but its execution was slow as heck and the one that's supposed to be the protagonist has the charisma of a stone. Could have been way better but still, it was still more than I expected for an anime rated SO low. Given how NOBODY talks about this series, I can see why. Not revolutionary despite its unique artstyle.

Hidamari Sketch x 365 9/10

(Season 2 of 4)

Dude.

That's one of the biggest budget boosts I have ever seen for a second season. Also the ordering of the stories seem a bit more coherent than in season 1, making you feel that the story and character development is actually happening. The comedy has also improved for the most aspects as well. Being literally the first Manga Time Kirara adaptation I can see why they didn't risk with giving S1 too much budget, but I am glad it was successful enough for a second, third or even fourth season.

And with that I close 2024. Happy new year to everyone!

Hidamari Sketch x Hoshimittsu 9/10

(Season 3 of 4)

So, it's already a feat that a CGDCT anime had three seasons, and it's even more of a feat to make it still feel fresh, and it's even more of a feat that the two new additions to the main cast fit so well with the characters that were already there... Well done. I'd also like to notice that unlike season 1 and 2, this turned into a more linear story, with some flashback and past segments that are integrated more organically compared to the first two seasons. Animation got a slight upgrade too.

Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb 9/10

(Season 4 of 4)

While the adaptation is still ongoing, the fourth season seems to focus on wrapping up the story to give it a conclusion, making it the only season where the story was purely linear. Animation yet again looks more polished and detailed (guessing it's because of the success Madoka had). Solid overall.

Hidamari Sketch: Sae Hiro Sotsugyou-hen 10/10

(OVA of season 4)

The graduation of Hiro and Sae seems like the perfect point to end the series, where everything went to an end in a satisfying conclusion. It was really emotional to the point of crying of happiness. I will miss this series to be honest. Despite the simple story the characters were incredibly likeable, like a sitcom you'd really cherish because of how genuine and fun the interactions are. Other strong point of Hidamari Sketch overall is the sense of belonging and community, how important is to keep healthy friendships and how each of the characters slowly grow as people. As I said, this was a perfect conclusion at least for the anime, and I really doubt I'd need to see anything related to this series in a while. I am perfectly satisfied.

Kanata no Astra: 4/10: My third official anime drop according to myanimelist, it was just very bad

science fiction show about this high school group that goes through a wormhole and gets lost in space during their space field trip. Idea is cool but it's just ends up being insufferable

I feel every character is a dumbass, like I go like "oh they can just do this" and they end up doing it but after 15 minutes of panicking, that on itself isn't necessarily bad, but then you have how the characters are written. There are a lot of characters and a lot of them are very flat. In episode 4 there is also a scene where they go "i'm not heping the crew I don't have any special skills unlike everyone else on the ship" and then another character has like a inspirational dialogue where they say it doesn't matter, it would be fine if this just ended here with them recovering the motivation, but they just fix it by giving them a special skill later that chapter, so what's the fucking point of that dialogue

episode 5 is a fucking beach episode that is when I dropped it, they start doing a romance sideplot and it's just again really poorly done

it truly felt I could be doing better things with my time than watching this anime

Tomodachi Game (Manga): 9/10
I picked this one up in 2022 and caught up at the time. I didnt realise it actually had an ending written for it until about an hour ago, where I had a bit left.

The ending actually hit hard and was actually kind of beautiful and hopeful, but not to an extent where its at a fault and unrealistic. The characters were written really well, and the dynamic between money and friendship stays true to the end. The artstyle is really detailed, and I often found myself jumping when turning the page and seeing some insane facial expression.

As a reader you lose your ability to trust anything or anyone until the very VERY end.
A common comparison for the bulk of the story is 'Classroom of The Elite', but I feel that comparison is unfortunate. Tomodachi game and its characters have a direction which clears itself up, and the main character has a set goal and motives from the very beginning, whereas the COTE storyline and main character feels bland and aimless, committing to trickery for no real reason.

Whilst a bit edgy, Tomodachi Game has a message, a message clearly communicated early on, and even though at a first glance it may seem that things get crazy, over the top and deviate from this philosophy, the ending pages bring everything together very nicely.

I've mentioned the ending alot but the story itself is amazing alone, each character is pushed to their limits at some point in the story, the truth gets unveiled, thrown out the window, and a cycle of distrust starts to brew. Character design is also very cool, the mascot is cute, the administrators are cool and some of the main characters get pretty creepy. There are set arcs, or rounds within the game, but as each round passes it becomes apparent that the game becomes increasingly hostile, as the finding the truth takes over the priority of securing victory.

Certified hood classic, I'm glad I saw this to the end.

[DROP]Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai: Under the innocent sky 3/10

Dropped by episode 2, it was borderline porn. Yeah I know that it had the ecchi tag, but in some instances, it can be ignored or be used as a tool to make the story somewhat more transgressive (i.e. Yurikuma Arashi or Monogatari), however here's just... awkward, just to make people self-pleasure. Either way this isn't what made me dislike this series the most, what made me drop it was... its characters, who the fuck wrote them? They're mostly supposedly adults but they all act like horny teenagers, also, there's a like 10 year old who fucking... wears... lingerie... and is an exhibitionist because supposedly according to the author "they do that in her country". No fucking sane country allows that what the fuck.

I watched it due to the convoluted mystery plot but definitely this isn't for me.

Kyou no Yuiko-san (7/10)

Pleasantly surprised.

While the story is the generic tsundere and normal guy, the romance felt more grounded and natural. The character development was really good. Them just getting to know each other and maturing on the way felt really good to read. The art was pretty decent. The side characters and their stories were very short and wholesome. Not too much drama. I wish it went for 1 more volume though because the ending felt a teensy bit rushed but overall this was a fun read. Easy recommend.

Bishounen Tanteidan 7/10

Oh, boi.

Another anime adaptation of NisiOisiN, by the same studio that adapted his most famous novel? (Would be the third time it happens by this point) Is it as good as Monogatari?

No.

It's not bad either though.

I liked Bishounen Tanteidan, particularly the characters are nicely written and animation looked good... sometimes, because damn it falls flat in some other points, one could notice it was on Shaft's decadent era.

Story is quite absurd, partly in the good way but also in the bad way. Some conclusions to the story, as well as some plot points of certain arcs were like... "yeah that would DEFINITELY happen". It's the second time I see in an anime a casino ran by secondary schoolers (the other being Classroom of the Elite), how is even that... allowed? Either way. It gets better since the paintings arc and the conclusion was decent albeit very clichรฉd "oh here's a montage why our protagonist is cool", quite sappy if you ask me. The central theme of "beauty" was nice to see, and it's a unique anime in most senses. While it's a dialogue-heavy story it does not feel sluggish, mostly. I wish they made a season 2 to adapt the rest of the novels too.

Katte ni Kaizou 8/10

Yeah this is a prototype Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei of some sorts as it's an OVA based on an older manga by the same author. Humor is the same except that it's raunchier and more unhinged, reaching borderline ecchi levels. In theory the comedy is bad but I found it quite funny, particularly in the latter two episodes where you notice Kumeta's comedy evolved. A plotless gag humor anime but still far from bad.

Really compelling prologue and story. However, it felt somewhat fast paced in some parts of the anime itself and felt too generic for an isekai. I will say though that it was a nice experience seeing the MC start from scratch and then following along his journey.

There's a whole lot to unpack but I would give too many spoilers if I were to tell y'all. I'd recommend it to your average isekai enjoyer.

This is by no means a bad anime but I feel the story would have worked better as a movie with either focusing on the drama or focusing on the fishing. Animation was somewhat weak too, and the plot progression felt awkward, like they sell you that the terminal illness of Tsunehiro would be the biggest causing of drama yet it's barely touched. The part of the debt collectors was also anticlimatic and added almost nothing to the overall story, and the last three chapters felt like "oh yeah we need to give an ending to this series".

Yeah copypasted from MAL.

Negima?! 7/10

For a score of just 6.93, I was surprised how this turned to be quite decent. Wouldn't call this underrated but rather overhated.

It's far from perfect, but it has its strengths: The animation, soundtrack and voice acting was excellent. The comedy was quite funny most of the time, and it didn't try to take itself too seriously. The plot was simple but mostly interesting.

Now for the bad parts: The magic world arc started horribly, with 7 episodes where the plot didn't advance at all. There's also the problem that anime that try to focus on the whole classroom have: Many characters are left out and served just as background jokes.

Either way, it was an enjoyable series, and while this is the "worse" version of Negima, it did make me care about the existence of the franchise. Miiiiight read the manga.

Yeah copypasted from MAL too.

Forgettable, repetitive and mediocre. I didn't laugh in many episodes, or at most, barely had a moment where I smiled. Kanako has no personality other than haha she's a lesbian please laugh haha haha hahaha. I hated Mariya at the beginning but I appreciate him more as the one that kept Kanako at bay, she is a creep that deserves it.

Okay now for the good points, I loved Kobayashi Yuu's acting and animation seems quite good for 2009. The dorm mistress also had her funny moments, but other than that, the series could be perfectly ignored.

I will watch S2 solely because I want to complete Shaft's animeography.

Same as S1, but in the first episodes comedy went slightly more creative.
Still not much better other than animation being polished.

Interesting anime set in medieval China. The plot is basically Maomao uncovering mysteries. Everyone should watch this but I think the score is a bit overrated in MAL.

This thing has potential. Although it's quite unconventional for "ROMANCE-comedy" animes without (seemingly) any relationship progression between MC and the girls (the plot is basically MC got surrounded by heartbroken girls). Looking forward for season 2!

A short artistic film with no plot, voice acting or whatsoever. A literal snoozefest with **AESTHETICS**.

Hoshi no Koe 6/10

I... have many questions about the worldbuilding here. How does a 2001 phone work in space? I mean I have seen this in the Jimmy Neutron film which is a kids movie but here... anyway seems like not much thought was put onto this. The short length also played against the story here.

The romance was okay at least. Awesome work if takin into account it was made by one person. Way better than Josรฉ Chicha la Pelรญcula... so yeah I watched this just to prove a point.

Kanon (2006) 8/10

Kanon was quite solid for the most part, the last arc felt a bit whack to me, but after not liking AIR and Little Busters! as much, I really found Kanon to be enjoyable as pacing wasn't as rushed as the first nor as absurdly dragged as the latter. I also liked characterization here, not perfect but still quite solid cast and well done arcs in almost all cases.

Kyoani also did a great job at animating this. For a 2006 anime the animation is fantastic. Voice acting was also top notch, although soundtrack wasn't as memorable as AIR's.

It was worth watching.

Anime NOT manga, and a rewatch at that.
I had to reevaluate this because the last time I watched this was around 9+ years ago, and man, now and that I know my stuff, I'm just like, wow. The setting of this series is why it's down to 3/10, otherwise it could've been a 5/10, average.

I gave this one a 6/10 because "meh". The feature film-length episode probably carries this series, or at least I think, but I actually don't know why this series is hella popular like it is right now. Seriously, someone tell me how come.
Also for some reason Himitsu no AiPri of all the series FREAKING collabed with it.

Now we're talking. Don't like ice skating? Don't worry, you don't need to like it to watch this. Seriously, this is something else. If you don't know stuff about skating, you may feel this may be the same case like Ryuuou no Oshigoto!, where the anime does feel entertaining even while you don't know the material it presents (shougi in the latter case, skating in the former case), but Medalist DOESN'T fail to keep things interesting.
Oh and the backstory of this series is a whole new world THAT could be its own anime, a series about how a mangaka was able to achieve her dream of crafting a sports manga that would be made into an anime WITH her favourite seiyuu/VA taking the main role.

I decided to NOT wait until Shiunjike no Kodomotachi is finished because I felt like I couldn't hold this anymore and decided to put out this update. Oh and hopefully I'll be able to finish Kiratto Pri*Chan early enough for this?

Saga of Tanya the Evil: 9/10.

The story involves the protagonist Tanya, A ruthless-HR-Supervisor-turned-loli-war-criminal, which is entertaining af. I also enjoyed the fight scenes a lot. The anime is set in alternate WW1 scenario in another world (this is an isekai actually) where "The empire", with the border equivalent of 1914 Germany + Austria-Hungary, fought against nearly the whole world. I like that there's an evolution of armaments used by the soldiers, which mostly parallels the changes in WW1. From Picklehaube to Stalhelm, from Kepi to adrian helmet etc. Also there's a lot of subtle historical references throughout the entire anime (and movie).

I give it a 9 because I think there's too much fight scenes and I'd like to see more strategic thinking of Tanya (and how she treats the Geneva convention as the Geneva suggestion).
