Backstory
It is the year 1050 of the age of myth on Hini, the Orb of Mystifications. A group of 7 dwarves hailing from a dying civilization, the Splintery Banister, have been tasked with restoring glory to the once great Mountainhomes of the Southern Ridge of Ant-People. This is part of a last ditch effort to survive the 968 year ongoing war known as the Feud of Snatches, it is a war with a traitorous dwarven necromancer that has not only crippled the Splintery Banister, but also driven their human allies, The Father of Sundials, to extinction.
The story of a Legendary Undead Cheesemaker
30 years before the beginning of history, a dwarf was born to unknown parents in the hillocks of Cashew-Treemolds. He was a cheese maker known as Figan Knelltaro. Unknown to those living in the hillocks, this humble cheese maker had a dream to rule the world. In the year 25 at the ripe young age, for a dwarf, of 55 he became the mayor of Cashew-Treemolds. soon after however, in the year 37 he became obsessed with extending his own life as it became clear that it was impossible to achieve his true goal of ruling all of Hini in the pitiful 170 year lifespan of a dwarf. He began worshipping Ucimsost, the Deceiver of Coveting, dwarven goddess of Death and Murder, and she, upon receiving her first follower gave him a legendary petrified wood slab containing the secrets of life and death: The Beak-dog of Perpetrating. He attempted to keep his immortality a secret, but in the year 62 people began to notice that he was no longer aging, and he was driven from the hillocks he called home.
He went on to wander the Burlesque Hillside, eventually forming the Milk-Opals of Gloss, a traitorous dwarven government ruled by necromancers. in the year 66 he settled in the tower Fireplaceengaged, and still lives there almost 1000 years later, and decimating the surrounding civilizations. But he will not rest until he rules the world,

Your goal is to create a place where the dwarves of the Splintery Banister can live and recoup their lost population and hopefully at some point in the future become powerful enough to take on the Milk Opals of Gloss and win. Due to the surrounding civilizations being decimated, trade will be subpar, so its best to attempt to be self sufficient and keep an amicable relationship with the nearby elves, you will already be at war with an army of the undead, you don't need to add a bunch of tree huggers to the list.
Your group of 7 dwarves has been sent to the Serpentine Highland, a mountain range to the south of the Ridge of Ant-People, to a place rich with resources and with a large river separating you and Fireplaceengaged, hopefully cutting down on random undead attacks.
- Your outpost is called Ngeltunsobal, "LastDwarf".
- Your group is known as Ebzugzoralabez Kutothest Ovesholor, "OffhandTopics the Apes of Idiocies".
- Your group symbol is a picture of Figal Knelltoro, he is burning.

The dwarves stop on the side of a foot hill, where surveyors had said there was some soil, shallow clay, a light aquifer, unknown shallow metals, at least one layer of flux stone - useful for metalworking, and unknown deep metals. there's a dense conifer forest and a small river to the northwest, and the foothills of the Serpentine Highland to the southeast.
The dwarves can see bituminous coal and miscellaneous semi-rare gemstones in the sides of the red sandy loam hill and have already spotted giant snapping turtles, giant alligators, and giant mantids. Any fisherdwarfs will need to be very careful.
You have brought 6 war pitbulls - 4 female, 2 male, 4 cats - 2 female, 2 male, 3 sheep - 2 female, 1 male, and two beasts of burden who pulled the wagon, 1 yak and a one humped camel, both female.
you have two copper picks, two copper axes, an anvil, a bunch of food and alcohol, and seeds of staple cave crops, among other miscellaneous items.
The Dwarves
I will have you guys name the starting seven Dwarves. They can be called whatever or whoever you want. list the number of the dwarf you want to name and the first person to say a name for a dwarf gets it, each person can only name one dwarf though. I was gonna attempt to draw them, but this thread already took an ungodly amount of time to set up.
Choices
First business should be getting the essentials, so food, alcohol (dwarves don't like water and will only drink it in an emergency), and shelter. after that we need some way to defend the fort. Keep in mind there are only so many dwarves and too many jobs might mean that stuff doesn't get done quickly.
Options for food:
- farm the sheep (makes the best food and other beneficial byproducts, but is time consuming and labor intensive),
- gather plants from the surroundings (quick and easy, but doesn't give very good food),
- make farms for edible plants (Makes decent food, and many plants dwarves farm are also brewable),
- fish (dangerous, there are many beasts that lurk by the river),
- hunt (unreliable and also dangerous).
when it comes to drinks there's only really one option, farming and brewing the plants.
Shelter:
We need to decide where the entrance to the fortress will be, how deep we want to go before building the fortress proper, if we want to build above ground like humans, how extravagant or simple it should be, and what the fortress should look like - though I'll be doing most of this part, any input or ideas would be cool.
We also need to decide on how we want to protect the fortress, with a military, traps, or by hiding in the fortress. As well as if we will let any outsiders in or remain closed off to the outside world in an attempt to protect ourselves.
I will do my best to answer any questions about the game, and here's the wiki for anyone that wants to look for ideas of things to do. http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Main_Page
Honestly anything you can think of can probably be done to some extent in the game, so don't be afraid to put ideas for the fort out there, I'll let you know if it can or cant be done.
also,
Hopefully this is interesting enough for people to actually read through and participate...
