comment thread ended with a fizzle, but gonna document it for sake of keeping track of bg issues cause they seem to pop up more often these days and I get the feeling that might end up leading to something bigger eventually

First one is debatable. Maps being scrutinized for nsfw lyrics given similarly nsfw maps were ranked before just doesn't feel right, so it might have some worth. Second one from 2010 is not close to drama imo

Map vetoed due to hitsounds using mostly snares/kicks improperly representing the music. Mapper claims map uses variety of hitsounds to distinguish drums.

yeah op is pretty toxic. i showed him my map at one point, and he proceeded to bash the heck out of it. if criticism is needed, then i'll take those into account. but his mods provided nothing imo

If that's the case, will they also try to unrank decade-old mapsets that have nsfw lyrics? Hell, even my map in 2014, I warned people in the description, and that almost every 18+ song gets that warning because it's kind of required.

Targeting loved section for something that should have been more proactively enforced in official game content a.k.a. Ranked maps is a very wierd move of all the reason out of the blue.
And what makes it more interesting is that, the rule is non-applicable to old maps with same problem. WTF?

Not much drama. People complaining about bg have no ground to complain on and is next level "I want things my way" type of deal. RC doesnt even say BG must fit the song in guidelines

which is why i never understood things like gold dust or momoiro typhoon. both maps had good bgs, and yes, gold dust's old bg was questionable, but i still think it was good. with momoiro typhoon, this bg was FROM the anime, and yes, the anime includes a shitton of fanservice, so it's not like it's that kid firendly

based on what I've heard and what I've seen in various osu forums, I'm getting the feeling that the mapping community/experience is one cancer dumpsterfire (like how tokaku has described it).
is my gut feeling correct, or I'm just assuming based on a few instances of mapping drama?

you hear more of the drama even though it's not the norm because drama is entertaining to listen to. It's fun watching people get worked up over a cute circle-clickin' game. What you don't hear are the smaller success stories like "local mappers get their first map ranked!" because that's seen as more boring :<
heck, as an ex-bn I can tell you that circlejerking isn't even that bad (I only ranked like 2 taiko maps in a year of being bn), and if that's the attitude you go into mapping with you're much more likely to give up

you know, I've actually wanted to start mapping because there an abundance of songs that I really want to see mapped (especially radiohead and coldplay).
only problem is that I suck at mapping. pishifat also said in a video that not all songs are mappable, especially ones with inconsistent bpms, and that new mappers could try mapping TV-size anime OPs since they're easier to map for beginners, which I do not want to do.

you could try music for or from video games instead
people have managed to map songs with inconsistent rhythms/bpms, you just need a lot of experience to figure those out

I think I can make decent stuff, but really suck at it. I have in mind what I want to make but placing the notes where they need to be to make it play like I want is challenging. When continuing something I had started mapping I always need to spend an unnecessary amount of time trying to figure out what rules I made the patterns follow so I can continue it. Lack of color coding notes and editor notes really really sucks
The ranking process destroyed any and all motivation I had because I was hoping that maybe I can rank those maps, but my style is scrutinized. Addition of play counts for unranked maps is pretty cool; allows to see how many people play my maps, but maybe encourages me enough only to fix and polish the maps I already made.
If mapping felt like it was for something maybe I would resume mapping. Mapping a minute takes me roughly 2 hours. Without a reachable goal it is a waste of my time. Maybe if collectable mapping achievements were a thing that would encourage me to map something again. Dunno.

It's been a while since I've seen a shipwreck as bad as that one. If we were to ignore the bg, that STILL leaves us with at least a couple points of failure. Anyone going in there might want to grab a jumbo size popcorn bag
