osu! refuses to open. I've used the macOS client and done all the troubleshooting, but nothing works.

Sorry, I don't know how to fix your issue. My only guess is that the quarantine attribute hasn't been fully erased. Try running my troubleshooter on it if you haven't already. The only way I know of to downgrade to High Sierra requires reinstalling your entire system which is not exactly "easy".

I know you're not using macOS Catalina but try using my experimental Catalina build: community/forums/posts/7367239. It uses an updated Wine engine which is likely to work better. i'm using mojave. macbook air, mid 2013.

my osu crashes when opened with this error message after the latest update.
the error message reads; osu! was unable to obtain a graphics context. If this is the first time you've seen this, please try restarting your PC. If this is a fresh install, you may be missing graphics drivers.

when clicking restart osu!, it will proceed to update the client, then say the client is up to date, process repeats with crash and same error message.
obviously i've tried restarting multiple times lol

i've tried the solutions in the osu thread with no result (replacing the osu!.exe file with osu!install.exe renamed to osu!.exe, etc.). in hopes that maybe those solutions would work for me.

i don't use wine with osu, but when osu worked (before the latest update), it ran perfectly fine with no flaws, crashes, frame drop, etc. should i install wine? or reinstall osu?

everything seems to be working pretty fine now, thank you, i appreciate the help :)
only issue is that although osu runs fine, every time i open up osu there is the 'osu crashed' error message.
after clicking restart, osu launches as normal. so no real problem there, just bothersome.

Okay, the Wine engine that I suggested using might have been too new. Sorry about that. If you still have time, try using either slc's: community/forums/posts/6919344 or peppy's community/forums/posts/7140911 Wineskin build that should use a far more stable engine and should fix the crash you're having. Keep in mind you must run my troubleshooter on these Wineskins to remove the quarantine attribute as well.

How are you importing maps into osu!? If you drag them into the Songs folder and press F5 you shouldn't have any problem importing them.

oh alright, works perfectly fine now. i think i'll stay with the version of osu i have currently (even with the bothersome error message at the start, just too lazy to install the other ones)

dragging into the songs folder works, no errors :)
i used to drag the beatmap into the app or manually open it (open with > osu! application).

I tried all the steps but anything work ; - ; it´s so frustrating. I disabled System Integrity Protection but still not working with the same message "osu! is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash."

What can I do? ; - ; help

i cant input my downloaded beatmap and skin. It say "There is no windows program configured to open tihs type of file". But i can open the osu app somehow without using your step

Drag your beatmaps and skins into the Songs and Skins folder. You can find these folders by right clicking osu! > Show Package Contents > drive_c > osu!. You need to extract skins as well. Do this by changing the extension of the skin to .zip and then extracting it as normal inside of the Skins folder.

Please paste the full report. Try following the steps: osu! or Wineskin will not open! from my guide manually. Otherwise, right click osu! > Show Package Contents > Contents > MacOS and double click on WineskinLauncher and see if that works.

Try renaming the osu! 2.app application on your Desktop to osu!.app and then run the command again. When you dragged the file into the Terminal there was a leading space which might have caused it to fail.

One additional to thing to try is running this command while you are cded into the Desktop in Terminal:
chmod -R +x 'osu!.app'

(You probably don't need to update the WineskinLauncher itself. It's not usually the component that needs to be updated; That "Waiting to Update" message is from your iCloud Drive waiting to upload the file.)

No problem! Let me know if you have any more issues. I think I'll add that command to my troubleshooter when I get the chance so other people won't have the same problem.

for sure! the only problem i had was it saying before i open it that osu had crashed, but simply restarting the app seems to solve the problem (since it wasn't open in the first place).


i haven't played osu! yet, (so i don't know if this will affect the game [which i kind of doubt it will]) but once i get on the app by just pressing restart osu!, it seems to work perfectly.

Yeah, that crash seems to be an issue with the current Wine engine and there doesn't seem to be a fix for it at the moment. Restarting osu! each time should work though.

Use one of the newer Wineskins such as slc's community/forums/posts/6919344 or peppy's community/forums/posts/7140911. You must run the troubleshooter first on the Wineskin before opening otherwise it won't work.

it says "open the osu! folder" for step 4 what do you mean by that because when i rename the ous!install.exe to use osu! it doesnt replace anything edit:wait i figured it out testing if it works right now edit 2: it works now tysm the only problem i have is it wont let me switch windows so i cant easily get beatmaps while having the game in the background edit3: i also cant get skins to work im trying to fix that atm

Hi whenever I open the app it instantly freezes on the main menu opener. I can still hear the music but I'm forced to manually reboot my MacBook because I can't close or click anything.

Enable "automatically move beatmaps from the Downloads folder" and then download beatmaps from the osu! website. Alternatively, open the osu! folder and drag the beatmaps into the Songs folder. Then press F5 while you are in game.

Are the default maps in the Songs folder? Can you paste what the Songs folder looks like? (like the directory structure).

The "automatically move beatmaps from the Downloads folder" option is part of my troubleshooter. If you open it up it'll be under the General tab. I find it makes it easier to download maps without having to drag it in manually :P.

There seems to be some issues with dragging beatmaps directly into the Songs folder recently (community/forums/topics/1058335). I'm not sure if its related or not. Instead of dragging them onto the osu! logo you can try dragging them into the osu! window itself (this is a little harder and might take some effort to get it working).

Open osu! > Options > Scroll to graphics > and Uncheck "Fullscreen mode". After you do this osu! won't minimise when you select another window.

You cannot. At least, not until the wine engine is code-signed and/or notarized (it hasn't been yet).

I've been having cursor lag on my osu! client. The automatic problem fixer doesn't help, and nothing on the troubleshooting page worked either. Help?

Yeah, my troubleshooter can't help with anything performance related. This is probably a consequence of the Catalina wine engine at the moment. I don't know any way to fix it.

This is a known issue. There should be a black bar at the top of the editor window. If you press near the top left of the black bar you can access all the menus (although the menu bar itself probably won't show up). Alternatively, you can reenable XQuartz but I would not recommend that because that will impact performance significantly.

I spent some time experimenting with osu! and Wine and I've finally found a solution (or rather, a workaround). Here are the steps that need to be followed:
  1. Open the osu! folder (Right click osu! > Show Package Contents > drive_c > osu!)
  2. Create a new file in this location named execute.bat (with .bat as the extension)
  3. Type in: start C:\osu!\osu!.exe -nosplash
  4. Save execute.bat
  5. Open Wineskin (Right click osu! > Show Package Contents > Wineskin)
  6. Click Advanced
  7. Change the Windows EXE field to: "C:\osu!\execute.bat" (including the outer quotes)
  8. Close Wineskin

Now osu! will not crash on start up. This obviously isn't the most ideal work around but given the difficulty in getting winedbg to work properly along with the obfuscation in osu!'s stack trace it seems it's the best one at the moment.

If other users report success I'll add this as an automated fix to my troubleshooter.

Im having issues downloading osu on my Mac (Catalina). I've downloaded the Catalina build and disabled SIP and followed all the listed steps but after I right click and hit open on the application from my applications folder there is a little pop up from the wineskin that lasts about 10 seconds then disappears then nothing happens. What's strange is that about a week ago I tried downloading it (I believe I did all the same steps) except I did not disable SIP and it worked fine! I was able to download a bunch of maps and play for a few hours. when I came to play today however I tried opening the app and it never opened (hence me starting again today and trying to download osu once again). The only thing that has changed within the time of me downloading and playing osu last week and today is that I just downloaded a Wacom install software as I just bought a Wacom tablet to play osu. I would feel terrible having just bought a new tablet to play a game that doesn't work on my computer.
Please let me know your thought!

The only reason I can think of for the Wineskin working before without SIP being disabled is that your system was not on Catalina at that time. Either that, or SIP was already disabled when you installed it. Run my troubleshooter (community/forums/topics/1036678) and paste the report here if there are still issues.

Can you right click osu! > Show Package Contents > Wineskin > Advanced and then click Test Run. When it's done, there should be two text files that appear on the screen. Copy and paste the contents of those text files here.

I really doubt that the Wacom tablet software would have an effect on osu! opening. If you want to see if it's the cause of the issue open Activity Monitor, search "Wacom" and then force quit (click the stop button at the top left) all of the processes with Wacom in the name.

Edit: I just noticed that the update.log generated successfully which should not have happened if osu! couldn't open. Right click osu! > Show Package Contents > drive_c > osu! > Logs and paste the contents of update.log and runtime.log here.

Please paste the logs from the Wineskin Test Run as well (and try force quitting Wacom to see if that helps). It'd be best to put the logs in a spoiler tag so they don't take up so much space. The updater seems to be working fine so I'm not sure why osu! itself isn't opening.

Ive also quit Wacom. hopefully you can see a solvable issue? also to note: once I accidentally double clicked the application to open instead of right clicking to open and I heard that could cause issues? not sure.

Everything seems to look fine. Right clicking osu! and then pressing open should work even if you've double clicked it. It'd be best if you can record a video of what's happening when you open osu!.

When you say that something appeared from the Wineskin for about 10 seconds, are you sure that's not the osu! updater? Just in case, open up my troubleshooter and then click on Other and then click on Update osu! and see if that helps.

If that doesn't work try downloading the Catalina Wineskin again (and make sure not to transfer any files over) and then run my troubleshooter on it and then see if that works.

Yes I believe it is the wineskin updater that pops up. I tried the update button in your trouble shooter but nothing happened. I tried downloading again and the same thing happens (what exactly do you mean by "transfer any files over"?).
another thing to note is that I have been using Keka to extract the zip files cause when I use the default Mac archive utility it just says the download is damages and needs to be moved to the trash.
I could definitely upload a video of what's happening but im not sure how (sorry im new to using this forum!) if you could tell me how that would be great!

The archive tool I prefer to use is The Unarchiver which can be found in the macOS App Store but the one used shouldn't matter. You can take a video using QuickTime Player by pressing File and then New Screen Recording. If you already have the file, it's probably best to upload it to YouTube (I'm not aware of any way to upload to the forums directly).

One thing to check is that when you open osu! open Activity Monitor and search for wine and see if there are any processes containing Wine in the name. Let me know if it appears briefly and then goes away or if it stays there. If there are processes with those names try force quitting all of them and then opening osu! again.

Hi Technocoder, i've been trying to download osu on my mac but i've been running into trouble. i had just updated to mac catalina and osu stopped running. i did all the steps you said to do (including disabling SIP) but i'm currently stuck at the terminal where if i type in the command

sudo xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine 'osu!.app'

it comes up with

xattr: No such file: osu!.app

how do i fix this? and can you please go into detail. ALSO it would be greatly appreciated if you could contact me at my instagram acc @eye_blech but if you cant its fine. thanks so much and like all the stuff you do is SUPER cool.

Please clarify what you mean by "having issues". There are two ways to go about installing skins and beatmaps.
1. Use osu!macOS Agent
If you enable the "Automatically move" options for the skins and beatmaps, when you download a skin or beatmap they will be automatically moved into the Skins or Songs folder. Then, to load new beatmaps just press F5 while you're in game.
2. Manually
Find the osu! folder by right clicking osu! > Show Package Contents > drive_c > osu! then drag any beatmaps into the Songs folder and press F5. To load skins, you need to first extract the skin and then move the folder into the Skins folder.

Hello , i've been trying to make osu work by reading the whole thread but im still getting crashes ...I followed all the steps from your guide, disabled SIP and used that sudo command.
I ran the troubleshooter and it doesnt detect any error ?
I redownloaded the wswine.bundle thingy as well and nothing changed.

The only issue that I've found similar to what you have is this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/osugame/comments/bny93r/cant_install_game_anymore/.

Can you open up Font Book (open spotlight and search for Font Book) and then see if there's any font with the name of Aller or Aller Light and then right click it and click "Remove" (or if that option is greyed out, click "Disable").

Hello, I need a little bit help with osu!. I recently reinstalled (Very important as i believe it has affected my issue). Osu!.The last time i played osu was last year on a mac.I remember it worked completely fine and i didn't update my mac.Now when i boot up the game, it doesn't even open or show any signs of opening up.After digging through the files and navigating to Osu!.exe. I opened it and it showed the osu! updater.The osu updater attempts to update to net framework 4.0 but soons fails.What do i do?

The best option is to probably whitelist or temporarily disable the file shield to unzip it. The Wineskin does not contain any viruses.

I'm a completely new player, and had no issues with installing osu!, I only needed to download the troubleshooter. It works great. Appreciate the hard work and hours you spent creating this. <3

EDIT: Hey, when i try to add beatmaps, it says 'please do not try to add beatmaps manually.' Any idea how to fix, or am i stuck with this these songs?

Is this a message you're seeing in game? How are you adding your beatmaps to osu!? The method that I've always found worked best is to drag the beatmap file into the Songs folder and then press F5 while you're in game to load the new beatmaps.

Thanks for all the work you've put in for the Mac users!

I've been using your build for the past year, it's been smooth sailing until around a week ago. Just some sudden frame drops, typically during the beginning of songs and after pass/fail screens.


I was able to mitigate this by turning off fullscreen mode, and changing my frame limiter to unlimited.

Could I ask if this is a certain settings choice that works better for Mac, and if you have any other suggestions to reduce dropped frames?

I unpacked the zip before but it dont find it?
What did i do wrong?

When i open osu everything seems to be running fine except for a bit of fps drops and the worst problem of all would be the weird and distorted music instead of normal sounds a distorted version is played, any way to fix this?

go to option, audio and click audio compatibility mode. whenever u open osu another day, its gonna be distorted so just disable and enable it every time u open osu.

Turning off fullscreen mode is something I typically recommend as it makes window switching easier. Changing the frame limiter to unlimited isn't something that I would expect helps frame drops but if it works for you then it doesn't really matter.

If you were getting frame drops after pass/fail screens then changing your skin to something less graphically intensive may be an option.

After extraction follow the steps under osu! or Wineskin will not open! from my guide. Ignore any "Operation not permitted" errors.

For the moment, System Integrity Protection must also be disabled. You can check if it is enabled:

The (extracted) application size has increased to 2.56 gigabytes which suggests that it may be more space efficient to rebuild the Wineskin from scratch.
the method is working but some minor issues, like compatibility mode is not working. but overall, it runs smoothly, sometimes it buffers and idk why.

my osu is fine on everything except when the game is on fullscreen and i cant switch desktop to desktop with the gesture on the trackpad, so i have to turn off fullscreen manually on the settings. which is difficult to download maps while your in a multiplayer lobby and keep everyone waiting because of it. can someone help me here?

Extract the beatmap pack file and then move all of the beatmaps into the Songs folder. Then press F5 while you're in game.

You can use the alt+tab hotkey to switch between windows (such as your browser). Alternatively, keep fullscreen mode off.

I'm currently running osu! on mac OS Catalina, and the game works just fine after I disabled the SIP. But for some reasons, I'm unable to import any of the beatmaps or skins into the game after downloading them. I removed all of the non-alphabetical characters in the .osz file. When I tried to import them again, the system just shows "There is no Windows program configured to open this type of file" even when I tried to open it with osu!. Are there any ways to fix this problem?

You cannot drag the beatmap directly onto the osu! icon. The easiest way to import them is to keep the Songs folder open (Show Package Contents > drive_c > osu! > Songs) and then drag the beatmap in directly. Then press F5 while you're ingame to reload. Alternatively, my agent: community/forums/topics/1036678 has a feature which automatically drags in downloaded beatmaps for you. Or, you can drag the beatmap onto the window (but this is a bit more difficult).

Hi everyone! I've found a way to get the game to run on Catalina (10.15.x) without needing SIP disabled! This is how you do it:
  1. Download and extract Technocoder's wineskin package from https://mega.nz/file/1wUhSK5b\#UOh3p73XnupbZktFgsljieoIdf_L1PkxDFwjBvflNGM
  2. Extract the .zip. Once you've extracted it, you should have a file called osu!.app
  3. Right click (control-click) on this osu!.app, and select 'Show Package Contents'.
  4. Navigate to Contents/Resources/dosdevices
  5. Delete the file called z/.
  6. Open a terminal window and type the following: sudo xattr -d -r com.apple.quarantine DO NOT PRESS ENTER YET.
  7. Drag and drop osu!.app into the terminal window, THEN press enter (You may need to enter your password).
  8. Finally, open osu!.app. The game should launch and update as normal.
  9. If the game doesn't launch on the first try, try again until it launches. Also, an "osu! crashed" error might appear, but just click 'restart osu!' and it should work as normal.
I tested this on 10.15.5 with SIP enabled. The game launched, I could log in and play osu!standard just fine.

Hi there! I was intrigued by your method of getting it to launch without SIP so I looked into it a bit more. First of all I was a little bit skeptical (sorry about that!) because of the reason behind requiring SIP to be disabled. The latest 64 bit Wineskins rely on a function: i386_set_ldt which is only available for use of it's disabled or if the no32exec boot argument is set... or so I thought. It turns out on Catalina 10.15.4 onwards this function can be used regardless of whether SIP is disabled or not (https://github.com/Gcenx/WineskinServer/issues/26).
So unfortunately I can't test whether your method works prior to 10.15.4 (and I suspect that it doesn't) but thanks for your post anyway! It seems that I can update the Wineskin and move it out of the experimental phase now.
