I simply tried an alternative to beatmania IIDX ok PC then I found this.
Andrea
My best friend in real life Jak64 introduced me to the game.

I was posting on a league of legends forum during my second attempt to get into that game and there was some dude who was full of shit bragging about how playing osu is how he got some quad kill or something because of reflexes.

I didn't care about the guy's actual post, but he included a video of his osu gameplay, and I realized it was a rhythm game, and I had loved rhythm games from my childhood because I used to have DDR and a dance mat. However, most rhythm games I'd tried to play were too complicated for me to learn and get into. Even now I still can't play Mania.

And I was like dude whatever I need stuff to play, and this game looks really interesting. So I downloaded the game, played casually Mouse only for about 3 months before getting a tablet and playing hardcore for the better part of 6 months, before I peaked out and stopped playing seriously.

What's more is that attempt to get into league was only like 1 week long, and I wouldn't have found the game otherwise. How different my life would have been if that one dude hadn't posted that one troll topic about osu, on that one specific week I was playing league and posting on those forums. Most of my online friends are people I've met through this community, so it's safe to say this game has changed my life.

I blame the YouTuber HerrDekay and his Groundhog pass for my existance here.

Played this game way back in 2008:

I was looking for a PC simulator for this game a la Stepmania, and found osu!. I was initially disappointed with how practically none of the maps had actual storyboarded stories... but I ended up coming back a few years later because I enjoyed the gameplay.
Espionage724
Saw a friend playing the game pretty consistently on Xfire and thought nothing of it for a while, but then I eventually decided to check it out. A little disappointed I didn't start sooner :p
HappyRocket88
I regret the day I had the opportunity to leave the game. Now I'm here... forever. XD
Sonnyc
Ouendan and EBA of course.

Edit: I wonder why there is no category for this :<
Natsu
Some friend show me the game and told me osu! is good to improve aim in FPS XD and here I'm

It was kind of a combination of the first choice and the second to last choice.

I was in a class and someone came into the room and started playing the game at an open computer. I thought it looked fun, googled the name and I'm still playing it today.
Kreylon
Pretty much bored with every game I had on PC and the game runs pretty much OKAY on this wooden PC of mine (though I get a massive drop of frame rate when I lost connection ==) ;3 Kappa. Also, stumbled upon WubWoofWolf's gameplay on YouTube which made me checked the game's website ONLY! Then I started playing when I'm done with all the FPS, MOBA, VN, RPG genre. Not particularly done but pretty much bored. Yeah ;p
BeatofIke
I discovered osu! back in 2010 via YouTube video on some forum thread. At first glance, the game looks very lame so I didn't bother playing it. Then a year later, one of my twin brother's online friends convinced him to try the game and he eventually gave it a try. He then re-introduced me to osu! but........due to the fact that mutli-accounting is prohibited in this game, I had to find a way to buy my own laptop computer just to give this game a try without any future problem. To my surprise, my parents bought me a new laptop for my 21st birthday (how convenient was that omg XD) and I was able to finally make my account and started playing osu! The game was fun, addicting, and very challenging. Well, here I am a little over 4 years year still playing osu! haha.
Gaia
I was browsing through guitar covers of Wareta Ringo until i came across this video > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAl9JrP5HkE and i was fascinated at how cool the game looked, so I downloaded and failed miserably XD
then about half a year later my friend Anoharu reintroduced me to this game again so here I am :3
Underforest
My history was different

I bought the game "Osu! Tatakae Ouendan!" for my Nintendo DS, I wanted to know more about that game. So I opened Google, but I was too lazy to write all the title, so I just writed "osu" and here I am. XD

Actually, my DS with that game was sold.
Anyway, this game is not bad thought. :)
Starrodkirby86
It was an article on Bemanistyle back in 2007 that led me here. But I actually don't remember that moment specifically. I only was able to just connect the dots when crawling through their web archives and matching the dates up. Back when I was totally an Elite Beat Agents junkie and was obsessed with making simfiles on StepMania...
Frim4503
read in the facebook thread then i'm ask my friend about this. they link me to this website and here i am.

I was a fan of Cytus back then when Freedom Dive was added to the game. I searched on youtube if anyone have MM'd the song and I saw osu! as the related videos, played by Cookiezi. At first I didn't know what the hell was happening, so I went to play the game myself lol..
StephOsu
peppy himself coming to malaysia during comic fiesta 2013
only started to be really active on this game since last year due to reasons, but i had made sure to update/backup my whole osu folder (at least the beatmap and the skin folder) daily ever since then
Sey
I actually heard of it from another forum. But then again, the person who told me about it was a friend, so I picked that option. I think another poll option for this would be nice though.
Narwhal Prime
From League of Legends streamer Dyrus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LOaxtJf9F4 (skip to 1:14 if you don't care about the LoL part, although it's what makes the video hilarious)

I had been a fan of rhythm games since I was young, but had never heard of osu! before. Back then I was also a League of Legends fan, and had been following the competitive team Team SoloMid, which Dyrus was a part of. After I saw that video I was all "Hmmm, this is a cool rhythm game in which I don't have to go to the arcade to play!"

I have been playing daily almost since. Thanks Dyrus :D

(Heard that PewDiePie also publicized osu! Maybe a bigger of influx of players there)
OskaRRRitoS
I saw a post on 9gag and decided to try it.
wajinshu
I stumbled upon this game when I watched some video utaite on YouTube and in the comments were the words "any osu players here?"
Rirakusu
I guess it's MoyBei or Chloe_miku that invited me to this insanely addictive stuff. Great thanks to them, although they don't really play a lot now :P
Haruto
Pick other, its because My Sister who taught me this game. clicking circle and mania playing is very addicting
this game is very nice and addicting of all time :)

In 2013 my friend recommended osu! to me and I quitted like a wuss after getting rank C on an easy song. 2 or 3 days ago I came back to osu! because my friend made me realize that I'm a failure at it when I said osu! was easy and he made me play Ifuudoudou on insane. I'm getting good.
chesnutcase
1 - From a friend, but probably in the most screwed up manner possible.

4 years ago, my friend brought his laptop to school. When I met up with him, I saw him watching a video.
At first I was laughing really hard, going "LOL why are you staring so intensely at a video of Ronald Mcdonald repeatedly falling backwards on a bench?!?!!"
Then I realised "Wait wtf, this ain't a video, there are exploding circles all over the screen?!?!"

And so I got introduced to this circle clicking paradise. No regrets. To be honest one thing that really hooked me into the game were not the songs, but how in the hardest difficulties (of that time, like mcroll and redalice's bad apple) the old, gigantic 300 fireworks would pretty much cover the entire screen when watching the pros' replays, and for some reason that really enchanted the 13-year-old me. I decided to start playing so that one day I could pull off the "300-fireworks all over the screen" thing on hard maps by myself.

And for that same reason, even after 4 years of playing I still have visible 300's with extremely visually obstructive firework effects.

TL;DR: saw my friend playing mcroll on osu.
Pawsu
Saw a video on Facebook, and I thought it looked so cool. I was drawn to it.
And now, I'm here. :'D

I watched WWW`s Videos :w:

Got this game from randomly dropped USB Drive.
Kyrari
Was actively playing LoL and it was a time where I started watching streams more than playing, then when I was watching Dyrus' stream one day I noticed he often plays another game while waiting for matches since it takes so long.

Basically I asked around after that and finally came upon osu! and I ended up playing more osu! than LoL after that
NaTha
I was in skype with a friend and he clicked hardcore on his Keyboard and i asked him what he's doing and he showed me osu
Weavoid
If I remember correctly, I literally just... found it, I guess. I go onto a lot of different websites about gaming/anime, and when I find some show or game I haven't heard of that gets my interest, I'll Google search it. I guess some page mentioned the word osu, I highlighted it and searched Google.

That's how I find most new games and anime, to be honest!

If you aren't kidding this is pretty impressive :D

One of my friends had osu link to their steam account and I was curious as hell because I had never heard of the game lol. So then I played it when he told me what it was and then that was when the addiction started :D
Makoto_
Well, this is like, my first time ever commenting since I started to play the game, feels weird. Whatever.
The very first time I heard/saw the game was because some friend linked me to some Twitch channel (I don't really remember) And I like, saw the game, watched it some seconds before closing the tab, that was like 2 years ago or more, before school started that year.
Then, when I really paid attention at this game was at school, me and some classmates were slacking, they already knew about osu!, and they also said one of the computers had the game so I was like "'kay, let's give it a try" and I started to fail a few times before tilting. The same day I downloaded the game and started to play it as some desperate choice.
Edit: I'd like to know why it has Japan Time. Please someone tell me :L

ppy = lives in Japan

Welp, might as well contribute: I don't really quite remember about how I found this game, only that I really sucked at it but was ridiculously hooked on it. I also remember this being one of the first accounts I ever created with the alias "SilverStarlight," so I find myself constantly drawn back into the game. I think I found it after a couple of google searches on "rhythm games" and I really liked this game, until at some point when I was almost non-stop playing Minecraft, another game I discovered roughly around that time. Now, I'm back and I'm ready to click circles (and not to blow my own whistle, but I'm a whistle blower; I think I'm decent at it now)

Edit: Even back then I knew who Cookiezi was and I kinda revered him, embarrassing as it is to admit
CSLM
before of meet osu! i was obsesed with the graphic novels of higurashi no naku koro ni, and there was a song which i really like it: Ayane - Angelic Bright. Searching some videos of the song i find a replay of that map in youtube and then i start to find out more about it. Some weeks after that i start osu in may of 2013 in my sister's laptop 'cause the update of that time doesn't work in my PC, and i had to leave it. Then i try it again in my PC in july, and with the update of July did it work. Since then i'm here, mapping for the community :D
piruchan
I was looking through a friend's desktop shortcut when I found a mania style rhythm game with auto generated map. He said there's one more similar game but with maps that fit the song better, and he showed me osu!.
Electovoid
I actually first stumbled across osu when a cosplayer on instagram @/geheichou posted a video of him playing osu!stream - I thought it seemed like a cool game(I've always loved rhythm games^~^) checked out the android app store and found that the non-official android version didnt work on my phone - thought it was a shame and left it like that

Fast forward a few months and i go to a con with a small group of friends - on the train ride home they were talking about some rhythm clicking game and how they should play later- i ask if it happened to be osu! And found that it was on the computer and not just mobile :D
- Later got the game and played a bit with them using my graphics tablet as i didnt have a mouse xD
- now i am addicted, and have well passed the times were i could still play with them - It just isnt fair for me to now xD Im pretty lucky to start out with a graphics tablet my whole journey :)

I used to play StepMania a lot, but a lot of songs I liked didn't have any fun KB simfiles online. When I tried to look for them I ended up here and became hooked on standard mode owo.

I don't exactly remember how I got introduced to osu! but from what I remember, I was watching Dyrus's Stream (LoL Streamer) and he started playing on stream and the game looked very interesting as I loved music and anime, so I downloaded and 2 years later I don't regret anything :D

i actually first found out about this with the video of Cookiezi's old final play. I thought it was legit and started watching more videos of this game and getting into the drama and such lol. Didn't actually make an accout and play until recently though.

this is what got me into osu!

I had played the DS games when they first came out after I found about about rhythm tengoku and started searching for music games on handhelds. After playing through those, I didn't really look for any alternatives until I saw a thread on 4chan talking about good music games "besides osu" so I came to check it out. Apparently it's been 6 years since then.

this ridiculous video got me initially interested after watching some memes of it.

There's an osu! community in our high school gaming club.

I was watching the school's best player play.

Fun fact - my kid sister showed it to me, and she herself stopped playing very soon after. I'm sticking around almost 7 years already ;x

I was on twitch and went to Osu! wondering what it was. I then proceeded to click on a stream titled "Don't watch me, I'm bad" and that's pretty much what made me download Osu. I had another friend who downloaded it at the same time and we played Pika Girl for two days straight. Unfortunately he quit though >.>

I was scrolling the app store's music games, Until I saw osu!stream. I searched osu!, I signed up for osu! after.

He discovered osu, well he is a nintendo fan, he likes rythm games (Like rythm heaven). And since osu is inspired from a nintendo rythm game, well, you must know what happened.
Don't know how he discovered nintendo osu, since it was released only in japan... Of course... He is a nintendo fan

my brother introduced me to it, after he was introduced to it by something he read about improving at league of legends. it seems a lot of people come here for getting better at other games?

mmm... i voted for "I stumbled upon a YouTube video of the game." but that doesn't describe it perfectly.
i'm an amv editor and a fellow amv editor uploaded a video someday where she showed playing one or two songs and made a game with 7 others from the comments (including me even though i didn't even download the game at that point). at the beginning i was really shocked how anyone could even play normal maps oO so i trained enough to pass easy maps before i went into the multiplayer match and that's basically what got me into it in the end.
Scarlet Evans
I stumbled upon a YouTube video of the game.

Months ago, when Last.FM wasn't terribly broken and I was still using it, I loved to check pages of Japanese artists, which music I was listening. On last.FM, there was often a link to youtube video on the song page, so you could listen to it. There was also a nice feature to find "similar artists", from which I was making a good use.

However, you know how it is with Japanese music randomly uploaded on youtube and copyrights - it often disappears. Thus, some people found a solution - linking youtube videos with osu! gameplay replays of the songs, if they were missing.

At first I was mostly ignoring them, as I was only listening to music and hitsound were annoying. Nevertheless, while listening to anime music, both at last.FM and directly on youtube page, I was encountering osu! replays quite often. I checked some of them and started to wonder "what game it is?"

I quickly got interested by them. I don't remember what song it was, but after one of these videos the dam get broken and I told myself: "Enough! I am checking this game, I must to try it!"

My Bud introduced it to me, so i decided to try it, best decision of my life

A friend told me about the game 2 and a half years ago, but I only started playing last July because I was bored as sh*t. Turns out its a lot more fun then I expected :)
