This mappool looks so cancerous.

Grats to Hong Kong! First time they have made it to the finals!

First of all, i'm pretty certain i used the wrong word to describe this. Secondly, I want to make it clear that in no way am i saying the map pool is good or bad

before i start, there are about 2-3 maps in the pool I haven't played. Basically (how i see it) a lot of the maps are either jumps, streams, or require alternating, and hardly a combination of those.

rubik's cube, once again, yuyu metal, require heavy alternating skills. The rohi map also requires decent alternating on the 1/3s. A team could effectively have half their picks specialised in one area.

perthed again is basically a low bpm version of cheatreal. Perthed again, king for a day, messiah, muteki no soldier consists of nearly only 1/2 jumps. Again, a team could effectively have half their picks specialised in one area.

this year there are only a handful of maps that require well balanced skill sets, but that doesn't necessarily mean the mappool this year is bad. It could lead to teams adjusting lineups which could be a good thing for the viewers (we get to see the more specialised players) and more strategy around picking

the pool last year was fun, because a lot of the maps required the player to be skilled in many aspects of the game; stamina, speed, accuracy, aim etc. A lot of the maps this year require excelling in only one aspect, which is considered a bore to many players

once again:

that doesn't necessarily mean the mappool this year is bad. It could lead to teams adjusting lineups which could be a good thing for the viewers (we get to see the more specialised players) and more strategy around picking

I think going forward I like the idea of maps with more specific focuses at least in the later rounds of OWC. I think it's a tricky thing to pull off in group stage for example because each team, for better or worse, is only able to form a team consisting of members of a single country. Some countries have enough players to qualify for competing in OWC but might struggle to even come up with 4 players consistent enough to do well. Thus, picking less generalized maps for the map pool hurts these small countries the most because whatever their 4 players are able to play is all they are able to play.

On the other hand, we see countries like the United States and Poland who have very deep rosters this year such that they have more specialized players to rotate in depending on what maps are picked/banned. I think on top of this, it encourages players who want to compete in OWC in the future to consider investing a lot of time into specializing in some of the less popular skills that are not as well rewarded by the PPv2 system. Instead of thoughts like "I'll never be able to play in the OWC because I'll never be as good at everything as players W X Y Z" it fosters thoughts such as "I may not ever be able to surpass player X in general, but if I can at least prove my self in niche skill A then I can actually be of use for my country."

So I think finding the balance in which stage of the OWC to start shifting to a more skill specific map pool is something that should continue to be evaluated as the player base improves and grows.

Also encouraging player switches is nice. There's a reason a team is 8 players and not 4. Sucks to be the 4 that never plays.

Thought for improving map pool showcase for next year:

Either have one of the map selectors commentating why they chose each map and possibly other maps that were considered in it's place or have them do a writeup on this and send it to the commentators along with the map pool itself so that the commentators can point out subtle nuances and such.

It's nice having players like Doomsday and Cptnxn around during the showcase due to their potential experience playing any of the given maps in the past but since the pool is unknown to the commentators until just before the showcase (for good reason) I imagine it's probably hard even for them to think on their toes.

I feel like the map selectors are probably the most capable of highlighting details on each map and the pool in general since they have the ability to prepare such information. It could also clear up possible misunderstandings around a given map pool by providing insight into why certain maps were chosen.

Optimal schedule for me, the match starts at 4:30 AM in my timezone, but who needs sleep anyway :^)

Can someone explain what will happen when USA wins the (first) final?
I believe they have to win again (like last year): if so, will the second match be right after the first?

I'd like to see everything and if the osulive stream can cover both matches in one broadcast, I can just watch it when I wake up instead of getting out of bed at 4.30 am..

USA needs to win 2 series in a row in order to be the champions while China only needs to win 1. And I think the second series is always right after the first one yup.

There will be most likely a short break if USA manages to win their 1st match(like about 15 min, iirc it was also the case last year)

Maaan I missed almost the whole thing this year again.
Osu needs a newsletter just for this event or some other kind of reminder for not active players

At least it's one weekend as opposed to an entire fucking month for people who live on east side of US. Finally schedule breaks in our favor.

USA has Toy. They're unstoppable this time.

I was about to complain that it's start at 4:30 am for me too, but thinking about it, yeah east side of USA had so much bad timing haha! (sorry) xD
