Well I think that this map deserves a rank bcz it shows us another reasonable and cool way to map a song. By creating a new sound track with hitsounds and circles and sliders, the map shows the music perfectly. And also it gives us a chance to experience the music like a musician but not a game player, that means people will enjoy both the map and the music in an active way.

Always following the music without adding the mapper's own ideas towards the music will be frustrated and tasteless, isn't it?

So I think that the map is not so-called "overmapped" :D

Just took a quick glance at the Extra since it's causing a stir.

You can't silence the ends of sliders like that. Looking at the custom drum-hitnormal.wav
So much new combo spam all over the map... That breaks the HP drain ya know. It also doesn't fit with the song at all and is geared more towards the patterns which is the worst way to utilize new combos.
As for the overmapping, I find some of it okay, but a large majority to be pretty bad against the song. Most of the ones that just sound really bad are the extra whistles everywhere. They put an emphasis on the wrong parts of the stanza and leaves the listener in an unbalanced state.
The speed changes looked pretty unreasonable too. Get tick rate 2 in here if you want to pull that kind of stuff off, though I don't recommend it for this song.

i've been thinking about how to reply u guys for a long time, and here's this:

well, this map's song, what do u feel from it? not my map's type? and it may not the type in your mind to me as well

then i set stuffs in that way, that's all. as for what purpose i did this, i can only say it's the way i express the music.

to Garven: hmm, just say that silence end is ok, additive stuff r set in same way and i set all nc, ds and sv in logic of the music itself. maybe there're some of them need to be checked, i'll waiting for next bat's mod. as for tick 2... i'll consider that after testing a bit if possible.

As I said before, you can't have a completely silent sound like you used at the ends of sliders in the hardest difficulty.
I only recommend tick rate 2 for the hardest difficulty if you do change it. This is only because of the weird speed changes. Otherwise, keep it at 1.
The font used in the SB feels kind of unfitting considering the style of song despite the lyrics. It'd be neat if you could find a font that was less scratchy and more solid lines like what you drew in the BG.
Considering how ridiculously unbalanced the difficulty spread is on this mapset, you really should consider adding an Easy.

[Normal]
00:13:763 (3,1) - Don't use consecutive short repeat sliders with different repetitions of repeats in a Normal please.
01:55:925 (1) - This spinner... doesn't really need needed at all. It's not following anything in the song and feels like filler.
03:29:574 (1) - You should simplify the rhythms used here. You don't need to hit every single sound - especially in a Normal.
04:25:925 (1) - I wouldn't have a short repeating slider with an even amount of repeats.
04:35:655 (2) - ^

00:48:628 (5) - The end of this is snapped incorrectly.

02:28:662 (4) - Same as 1:42.
There's a lot more. They don't really fit this song at all, nor the pacing of the map.
04:13:155 (2,3,1) - Suddenly the map got a lot harder for no apparent reason. Remember, this is a Hard, not an Insane.

00:03:831 (1,2,3,4,5) - I don't like the way these flow. Most of your patterns up to here follow a pretty distinct curve, but this progression just cuts straight down and breaks what you've set up.
00:08:493 (1) - Please don't do this with new combos. If you must use one to make a pattern readable, your pattern is in question.
00:11:331 (1,2) - This spacing, no please. Not right after having 00:10:520 (2,3) -
00:29:168 (6) - Please no. Snap the end correctly and make the end audible.
There's a lot more incorrectly snapped silent slider ends. Get rid of them. They don't fit the music at all.
01:12:952 (1) - More lone combos with zero correlation towards the music.
01:18:223 (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) - You really need to figure out what you're doing spacing-wise. This combo is a mess.
01:33:628 (5,6,7,8) - More 1/2 and 1/4 same spacing shenanigans. Please don't. It reads poorly and turns the map into a guessing game instead of something to enjoy.
03:12:547 (1,1,1) - New combo spammmm
03:19:439 (8,9) - It's best if you have the slider after the circle. It plays much more naturally.
Overall, it was kind of fun to play, but completely unfitting for this song. If you had a much more upbeat song that actually could support all these extra rhythms and crazy jumps, I'd give it a big thumbs up. For this song, it really is major overkill.

[Extra]
You're pretty much going to get the same sentiment and mods as from the Insane, only I'd be picking apart a lot of the overmapping. The hitsounds feel placed on incorrect beats, so accents are unbalanced within the stanzas, and it mostly just leaves me wondering what song you originally mapped to before moving the map to this calmer song. Let's get the easier maps fixed up first to give this map a better context.

We've had several IRC modding sessions to follow up on the mapset.

All difficulties except for the Extra are pretty much set and I am happy with them. Extra is pushing the overmapping way too far and is completely disingenuous to the song it's supposed to represent. No compelling reasons were presented to justify the overmapping, so I offered to move this set forward without Extra in the set, but Hollow Wings does not wish to do so.

I don't really see this set going anywhere with the Extra still attached, sorry.

About NC: Fix the ones above, please, I guess you sometimes make it quite wrong. Why would you add a NC on a blue tick? Remember: Use it on a new sentence, or a new downbeat (White tick). my bad to set nc like that, already fixed ;w;
About placing: It's okay mostly, I don't want to say too much to that, it seems fun to me. thx ;w;

  1. Cleared up a confusing rhythm and made it more satisfying to play
  2. Made plenty of patterns more readable and smoother to play in Extra and Hard
  3. Improved the flow in certain patterns throughout the diffs
  4. Moved a repeat that was obscured by a hitburst in the Extra

This map has been bubbled long enough, call me back after you finish your changes!

Hello. Unfortunately, I have to disqualify your map due to the following reasons:

[Extra]
  1. It has LOTS of overstretched 3/4 sliders that feel forced and needless to use, while most of the sounds and music phrases are plain 1/2, especially the vocals:
    1. 00:10:520 (2) -
    2. 00:21:060 (3,4) -
    3. 00:23:493 (4,5) -
      and so on. Note that it goes nearly for all extended sliders.
[Insane]
  1. A couple of patterns that are very uncomfortable and unnatural to play:
    1. 02:36:061 (1,2,3,4,5) -
    2. 03:45:384 (5,6,7,8,9,10) -

Now about suggestions (Insane diff.)
  1. Insane has very inconsistent spacing and spacing changes that don't look logical at all, except the parts with vocal, maybe. They probably follow the song or attempt to do so, but in such manner that the whole map consists of random and hardly predictable speedups and slowdowns. I'd even consider things like 04:27:547 (1) as spacing errors if they didn't have new combo.

  2. It is suggested to use CS 4.5 and OD 6.5 on Insane to make a better spread; having Extra with CS lower than on Insane looks like Extra's CS was set up that way solely to make it more playable and to justify high SV and rapid jumps.

  3. You got at least one slider following vocals in an incorrect way: 01:19:946 (6) should be starting from the white tick before it.
The rest of the set (Hard, Normal) is surprisingly good. Also note this mapset will be handled by BAT from now on, but you are encouraged to collect some mods first, given the fact that Insane requires.. uh, more attention.

P.S. Regarding the source: it's better to use original (Japanese) spelling, as Melo suggested.

Not liking this new ranking system at all. Seems like QATs only job is to make mappers life more difficult, if they can unqualify any map just because they don't like it. The only problem with this mapset is that its not ranked.

I'd like to add a problem I found when looking through the map:

[Normal]

00:04:033 (2) - I wouldn't use multiple-reverse-sliders in a Normal, especially not in the easiest difficulty. The multiple repeats aren't visible early enough. Try to replace it by two 1/2-sliders and a circle, or simplify the rhythm by using an 1/1-reverse-slider (maybe with a red anchor in the middle, then it has almost the same effect as your current slider has.)
The same applies for the other slider that you used later on.

Good luck with re-ranking this mapset! The Extra is very fun to play, as always! :)

This includes the tricky patterns .

I found the Extra very enjoyable to play , in its current state.

By such critics allot of oldschool maps would need a unrank hammer . hell even allot of 2014 maps.

It's not just about the extended sliders, it's about the abuse of them, I mean, I don't like this "technique" but I don't say you must not use them at all, they could be used, but sparingly, because when you abuse of this, the ones that really could fit gets lost, as they wouldn't be that "unique".

00:10:114 (1,2,3) - 00:14:979 (1,2,3) - uhm, I can see a lot of inconsistencies here, despite the music being similar.
01:05:959 (7) - Also there's this kinda random triples, some of them are really intrusive and doesn't compliment the song at all, if you wanted to emphasize this, a bigger jump would've been better.
01:25:114 (5) - This could be better as a 1/2 slider as you're passing over a stronger beat.
01:26:331 (4) - ^
02:11:736 (1,2) - I find this as a cool alternative when you want to create a hold feeling.
02:31:196 - 02:50:655 - This part is ridiculous, song isn't that dense on beats yet you have a lot of 1/4 stuff.

This is just some of the things I caught on first look, so take this just as my point of view.

Things ain't what they used to be, there's a good chance that they have something wrong (Apparently in this case the source was just overlooked though) Keep in mind that you shouldn't refer to ranked maps blindly. ;)

I would like to bother you with metadata issue a little more.. 1) There's Chinese characters in the tags, replace 廢怯少女 with 魔法少女. 2)"Yuki" is duplicate, remove one of them. 3) Add the romanized source; Gekijouban Mahoushoujo Madoka*Magica [Shinpen] Hangyaku no Monogatari" into the tags. These pretty much put every metadata in order. Good luck on the way. :3

02:11:736 (1,2) - I find this as a cool alternative when you want to create a hold feeling. various patterns maybe, people can select by themselves imo w
02:31:196 - 02:50:655 - This part is ridiculous, song isn't that dense on beats yet you have a lot of 1/4 stuff. just same ones as i mentioned

Things ain't what they used to be, there's a good chance that they have something wrong (Apparently in this case the source was just overlooked though) Keep in mind that you shouldn't refer to ranked maps blindly. ;) i see, next time i'll take metadata's setting in detail checks to make sure nothing goes wrong before ranking

I'll be sincere. I think we got you like making extremely hard maps. I respect you and your mapping style (even if I don't like it, just personal tastes), but imho this kind of maps shoulnd't even get ranked. How can a quiet song like this be mapped this way?!? It seems like you mapped a 300bpm hardcore song and then replaced the mp3 with this quiet one...

personally I have the same feeling as Nemis about the ¨Extra diff¨, since this is a calm song, mapping it like a super extreme hard map doesn't make sense to me >:, Is like you mapped another song then you paste the map in this calm song, probably just me.

I do agree that some of HW's maps are being difficult for the sake of being difficult, but certainly not this one, as I could actually "feel" this map. It's hard to describe the feeling but it's somewhat like dancing (with the cursors), which I rarely do for many other maps.

Taiko and Mania would always be the better "rhythm" game than standard, as they are the modes with more keys and thus more rhythmic variety. Standard mode, however, provides each beat with additional information, which is the cursor movement, the flow. Mapper use this extra dimension all the time ,through, for instance, changing distance snaps, slider velocities, placing jumps and anti-jumps. Breaking out of the simple distance-snapped placement style is analogous to stop using monotonous 1/2 rhythm.

Similarly, using sliders to frame out complicated cursor movement (like this map does) is nothing different from creating complex custom rhythms. (Yes, about 3/4 sliders with muted slider ends: I always take them as a single note with DIRECTED CURSOR MOVEMENT instead of two notes separated 3/4 apart). I don't see why people happily (maybe not, ugh) the latter but are so paranoid about the former.

Think about this: string instruments (like violin) requires one hand to control the bow, meaning that string players can never play as many notes at the same time as piano players. However, string instruments are, in many ways, much more expressive than the piano, in that through the many ways you could move the bow, you could give the same note very distinct timbres and feelings. Bows are there not only to play the melody loud, but also to add much more variety to the melody. This is analogous to the relationship between osu! standard and modes like osu!mania: whereas using one hand for aiming reduces rhythmic variety, it also grants the same rhythm with much more possible expressions. Flow is there not to DISPLAY the rhythm, but to COMPLEMENT the rhythm and add much more to that.

I'm surprised how people get stuck in the comfort zone of "rhythm game" and refuses to accept the vast amount of possibility and expressiveness that could be provided by flow.

Accept different styles please, there are a lot of people who love this map, by forcing this map to be more conventional, you are making this group of people loving this map less. This is unacceptable.

Well I guess I cannot represent anybody. At least I love this map, to the extent that I would actually bullshit this much in an effort of defending it.

but a song shouldn't be mapped in a way that the rhythm is being altered or "improvised" in any way, shape or form by how the map itself plays out. Where's your appreciation of the original song? And if "additive mapping" is your alibi, or whatever it is, this map doesn't sound like it's being mapped "additively"(?) but more of an improvisation of the song which is personally not really an improvisation but a downgrade. I like the hitsounds, but how the map plays out.... SICKENS me to the stomach.

This should also be common sense.

Don't take this as offense or something but mapping difficulties like this is quite weird since there has many sliders and circles that don't makes sense after all, I also agree with Nemis because it looks like a random/free style to be honest, c'mon is just a calm song.

I don't think the rhythm has been altered. Apperantly, many players said the additive things make the song more expressive. The only thing confused me at first was the varied SV, which is not a problem anymore after several play counts.
I can't see the necessity of complaining such a lot here to upset the mapper and those people who love this map. When there's something make you uncomfortable, it would be perfect if you could give some specific suggestions on improving.

02:33:425 (8,9,1) - This flows quite difficult to move and feels forceful to do. Reducing its spacing to the like on 01:05:655 (6,7,1) - is better. (1.4x)
03:14:574 (1,1) - make them close to each other? possible to do it? if so, 03:15:790 (4,1) - this can be left because you fixed 03:14:574 (1,1) - so it guides players this direction
03:41:736 (1,2) - make them close to each other as same as 03:39:304 (1,2) - or if you don't want that close,
use around 2.3x as 03:40:520 (1,2) - did
It's nonsensical to have it end and force players to jump from 03:41:736 (1) - to 03:42:141 (2) - on such spacing. It's too easy to get x100 like a random.
Something like this is totally better and more comfortable to play.

03:44:168 (1) - ctrl+h absolutely gives a better flow

I expect you to fix everything above. They are all of my critical playability concerns that I will never qualify anything containing these.

"additive mapping" or just overmapping or "putting unnecessary 1/4 sliders everywhere, inconsistent DS for triples and 1/2 rhythms, and random doubles everywhere." so expressive, ok. the problem with this is that many of these notes aren't even a part of the song.. especially with all the 1/4 sliders, triples, and doubles in the last kiai. It sure is expressive i'll give you that, but not everyone gets the same idea of the rhythm that is presented in this map since most of the rhythm is MADE UP, not based on the song. The only suggestion i could give is just follow the damn rhythm since i mean...

Not everyone gets the same idea -> someone likes the rhythm, if my interpretation is correct. Arguing that some people don't like the "made up" rhythm is not enough, in that it does not disprove the fact that other people may like the rhythm. What you have to show is that there exists some valid improvement that makes both parties of people appreciate the rhythm more, which you, through your impatient and rude "mod", failed to show.

"Follow the rhythm" is a vague statement which is always debatable. Unfortunately, the reality is that there are many ways to follow the "damn" rhythm for any single song and few mappers actually follow the rhythm note by note (the most simple examples are the added triples, which, unfortunately, is not a Hollow Wings invention neither). Many mods that tell the mapper to "follow the rhythm" are just an euphemism for "I would map the song this way but you didn't and I don't like the map so here is an convenient reason for you to listen to me and if you do not you suck because you break the rules".

I am not saying that all such mods are bad, good modders give such suggestions that improve the map in general and make all parties, including the mapper, those who love traditional note-by-note mapping and those who love creative mappings, happy. Bad modders exert their myopic beliefs upon the mapper, forcing the mapper to change towards something bad, pissing off people and never getting any improvement. Unfortunately, again, I feel that you belong to the latter group.

This is like saying we can't apply the rules in computing 1+1 into computing 2+2 since 1 and 2 are different numbers. Yes, music styles differ, but 3/4 sliders are used, in both songs, to emphasize prolonged notes (at least from my glance at both). A prolonged note is a prolonged note, no matter if its a violin one or an electronic one. If you are not satisfied, go to the ranked version of this song and 3/4 sliders is also used in this way.
Learn to respect people before you expect others to respect you and listen to your opinions. Being rude doesn't help with anything.

Again, I agree that some of HW's approach in mapping is debatable, and I myself does not like some mapping decisions he/she made. However, I think I'm still awake enough to distinguish between people who actually try to help and people who just want to troll and annoy others. I am not trying to defend for HW, I just want to express my dismay. To be honest, I get sick at people like you, who are so prejudiced and hate for the sake of hating.

Lol.... Look, I read some of your replies on the "mods" that i gave (I wouldn't even call it a mod) and since I'm too lazy to reply to each and every one of them, I'm just going to say a couple of things.


You don't ADD YOUR OWN RHYTHMS in a song when you map songs. and If you're going to bring RESPECT into this, then there is no respect shown to the artist of the song because basically, HW's modifying the song with his own rhythms which she thinks is "better" so how can I respect HW when HW fails to respect the artist? You're not trying to defend HW but you talk like you do because you're not neutral, you only think see things in HW's point of view which I think is a mistake because HW sees the rhythm from HER and only HER point of view. :/ example: 01:46:804 (7,8,1) - 100% made up, I wouldn't even thought of that rhythm if HW didn't map it that way because it's not in the song!

"A good mapper can take what the music provides and create an interesting and fun to play rhythm.
A poor mapper has to add to what the music doesn't provide in order to create anything interesting." (from those)

i have already talk to ticclick and we did a nearly 6-hour-long mod to avoid all of issues he regard as unrankble ones, and be addmitted that can move on now.
